It takes knowledge, experience, and the love of God to keep us from descending into infinite chasms. During our stay here at Xavier High School, two men, Father Gerard F. Fagan, SJ. and Father Vincent Mc- Grail, SJ., by their tireless effort and enlightening counsel helped us to grow in this knowledge, this experi- ence, this love of God. And in grati- tude we, the graduating class of 1955, dedicate this book to them. Fr, McGrcil ond Fr. Fagan FACULTY no. 'x F' J r--,. 4 ,Q 1 z 1 , I , l V' ,A . ZA V if ,, Reverend Michael J. Costello, S.J. Rector N AVIER graduates of l955, over one hundred classes have preceded you through the doors of Xavierg mcn who have maintained throughout their lives the ideals and principles which they learned and who continued the prac- tices which they acquired while here. They are men of whom Xavier has been proud, for they showed forth in their lives the best of Xavier tradition. While there has been no insistence on the fact during your soiourn here, it is none thc less true that we have been proud of you during your student days. We hope that we may continue to be proud of you always. God go with you and preserve you. H T is always worthwhile to repeat again and again that the ideal we set before our stu- dents is the perfect Catholic gentleman, an ideal that is only achieved through the harmonious development of both intellect and will. No Chris- tian gentleman was ever formed who was only a knower of the Good and the True. He must also be a doer. lt is the sincere desire of the Administrators and teachers of Xavier that all its students, then, be not only knowers, but also ready and willing to transfer what they know into intelligent action, action that will advance them and others toward the Eternal Goal, the possession of Him Who is All Good and All True. Giving up extra, and ofttimes needed sleep, and foregoing a good breakfast at home, they de- scend the stairs on the west side of the gym to the Lower Church. Long a familiar place to the students, the Lower Church, but recently renovated and re- furbished, echoes the students recitations of the Missa Recitata. Here the men of Xavier are brought to a better, a greater, a fuller under- standing of the greatest prayer in the world, the Mass, through the use of the Missal and commu- nity recitation ofthe responses. Here they come to a closer union with their Lord and Maker through the reception of the most wonderful of Sacra- ments, the Holy Eucharist. After the May Day Parade those men, who have fulfilled the prerequisite of Mass and Com- munion thrice weekly, are received into the Guard of Honor in St. Patrick's Cathedral, These men, then, truly become Guards of Honor in the castle of their Lord. f.'r ,f'4ff4 f ,mm,fm:a,1 ' MQ V, WM-1-LM a, , H , fnf4n f ,fff 9 , 4 . Xavier men have participated in all forms of speaking competition, ranging from dramatic inter- pretion to humorous oratory. From a team work point of view, they have received a team trophy in a Catholic Forensic League contest, coming in second against stiff competition. On an individual basis Xavier men have scored well. Frank Boes copped two cups in extempore, and George Menake has one in oratorical interpretation. ln fresh- man oratory, Andrew McNulty swept his way through four rounds and won a first place cup. Xavier speakers have competed in other fields, too. John Gallagher made it to the semi-finals of the Journal American Tour- nament of Orators, and he and Bob Ar- rigon have appeared on WATV'S Junior Town Meeting. All in all, a rewarding season. Stage Crew OST people look at the play, form their criticism of it, good, bad, or indifterent, and go home. Their thoughts never turn to the activity that is blanketed by the curtains, like Joe Galvin directing a spotlight over there, and everybody else scrambling about. Although this is all hard work without seeming credit, this is the part the crew enioys because it is the payoff after many weeks of hard work. They have built and painted the scenes and after the play they will clean up the theater. And, besides this, Mr. Guerin's crew also pulls the switches for the Sodality Show and Theater Night. And so Father Jones took some of the cream of the school, whipped it together into a close-knit unit and thus has founded our present Classical Club. Thus the void, the feeling that the classical study at Xavier was somehow not complete, was filled. The program was twofold, to recreate some everyday Roman sights and to study the works that we do not dissect at Xavier. Many members spent patient-trying hours to recreate the pillars surrounding the atrium, the marble Rostrum from which Cicero presented his oration, and the Forum area where the Roman housewife bought the weekly provisions. Others, more proficient in sight-reading, spent their Wednesday afternoons in a remote classroom going over the speeches of the various Latin orators. Here by this probing, they became ac- quainted with the Latin modes of expressions, until Father Jones found them ready to compete in a contest, And Xavier certainly walked oft with honors. Library Stall Moving day. 'Two weeks only. HE library is an integrated and extremely necessary part of any school. Our own library is no exception. lt is well taken care of by Miss Linda Salvati, our new librarian, and an able student staff. The staff has been working hard under the direction of the librarian to help the men of Xavier in their quest of knowledge. There have been a great many additions. Over three hundred new books now grace the shelves of Xavier's li- brary. The number of magazines and newspapers has been increased and the scholarship section enlarged. There is no doubt but that the librarian and her staff are deserving of every bit of praise we can muster. ATHLETICS ai. ff-f 1 x L s U 1 5 2? Posting a record of only three wins and four losses, their spirit was constantly high throughout the season and every game was de- cided by a close margin. Despite the losing record, the Maroon and Blue was rated as one of the top teams in the city. And but for a few bad breaks they would have had quite an impressive record. They topped a strong Cardinal Hayes eleven, routed St. John's, runner up for the M. H. S. A. A. crown, and whipped their arch rivals, Brooklyn Prep. They also suffered two heartbreaking, last minute defeats at the hands of St. Peter's and Fordham Prep. The team's ability was clearly evident from the number of players who were selected to the All-City, and All-Met teams by the sportswriters of the New York newspapers. Several players were also awarded scholarships to college for their outstanding ability. Our thanks are due to Mr. Paquin, Mr. Burns, and Mr. Bianco for their efforts in training our athletes. Behind them ran the most hustling team in the City, The large numbers on the team show that Xavier will have a steady reserve of hard run ning talent in the future.
