McCarthy, Coach 'loc Bernard, and Coach Leo Paquin, Man igcr Sturm Next year came at Xavier. Ever since the authorities at 16th Street decided to have a football team, they had been hoping to field a really powerful organization that could command the fear, or at least the respect of all its opponents. Three years ago this September a group of big, strong, green Sophomores turned out for the team. Coaches Leo Paquin and joe Bernard took a few looks and a blink at these kinds and immediately visioned that here at last were the makings of the ball club which the school had been so anxiously awaiting. So they went to work, with an eye always toward 1941, to impart their knowledge to these boys and turn them from wide-eyed, jittery kids into seasoned veterans. A few of the Sophs made the first team that year. and the rest were appointed to relief duties. And so, little by little, they began to mature, learning from their mistakes and gaining confidence by their triumphs, until the year they had been waiting for arrived-1941. The team started the season a little spottily. They opened with a 2 point victory over Saint Peters of jersey City, giving a very strong performance in the first half but weakening badly in the second. Next came their only loss, a 6-0 debacle with a very powerful St. Cecilia eleven. Although the Cadets lost this contest the game probably cleared all doubt of the ability of the team from the minds of its coaches. The Cadets lost because they met a better ball club, not much better. but still a little better. Although losing, they played a marvelous game, especially a tall skinny guy nobody ever heard of before-Larry Koncelik. It is generally admitted that when reminiscing about great men you remember their defeats more vividly than their victories. And so too, when Leo and joe look back on the year 1941, they will recall the gallant battle that an out-weighed Cadet eleven staged before going down 106 EVENING PARADE to defeat, more readily than they will remember the five victories that fol- lowed it. The Maroon and Blue took their next two games by a pair of touchdowns, shellacking Brooklyn Prep 15-0. and Concordia l+i-0. The score of the Brooklyn game just about indicates the relative strength of the two teams, but the latter score is pretty far off, Had the Cadets played the Purple one or two weeks later they probably would still be adding up the score. Then fol- lowed a pair of romps. Playing under wraps, the Cadets steamrolled All Hallows 52-0, and followed with a 59-6 rout of Iona Prep. The latter game is noteworthy because it marks two great performances, namely that of the team in running up 342 yards rushing, and that of Gene Feeney in totaling 115 of those yards in only 15 attempts for a phenomenal average of ten yards per carry. A fifth successive victory was added to their list on Thanksgiving Day when they rallied to trip Fordham Prep 9-7. This game was highlighted by a field goal by Matty Grasberger and the magnificent performance of joe XX'hat's the matter with that guy ' Did you see somebody gO by ? THE CADET ELEVEN Backs: Feeney, Grasberger, Allen, McCrane The Line: Koncelik,Horgan,G1ldea Hea'y McCarthy Baumgaertner McFarland C The Start of a 50 yglrcl ride, off joe McCrane's toe. The Bugle the Cadet Marching Song between halves. Corps play McCrane. joe, one of the most publi- cized members of the team, saved his greatest game for his last. There in a few words is the season the school had waited for. Naturally there were surprises, injuries not men- tioned there. So now let us go behind the scenes to see what made the team click. The biggest and most pleasant sur- prise of the year was Larry Koncelik. Larry, who was regarded as a capable wingman, and no more, when the sea- son started, developed into the out- standing lineman in the history of the school. Tall, lean and wiry, he was the defensive giant throughout the year, the man who made the majority of tackles in all the games. Larry ,however, was not alone when it came to defensive ability, for playing beside him he had such men as Dick Horgan, Jack Mc- Carthy and Dick Healy, a trio of cork- ing linemen. These four formed the nucleus of the tremendous line of which the Cadets boasted. Everything considered, the most perfect part of the Xavier machine was its forward wall, which held its opponents to 267 yards rushing all season, an average of 38 a game! f r 'F THIE JUNIOR XI,-XRSITY Keep your eye on the Ball Feeney, under full steam. signals hard to starboard The backtield was a well rounded unit. With Artie Allen, who was changed from center to quarterback in a master stroke of Coach Paquin's, supplying the spark, the Maroon and Blue backlield functioned at high speed. Matt Grasberger was the plunger, joe McCrane the old faithful and Gene Feeney the colorful breakaway man. Gene led the team in yards gained rushing in his junior and Senior years. joe McCrane was recognized from the moment he walked out on the field. in 1958 as a potential star. And that was the trouble. The school newspapers played him up as a great ball- player, and the students, believing what they read, expected nothing short of miracles. So, as was the natural consequence, Joe tightened up and never did hit his true stride until late in his Senior year. As mentioned before, he proved his mettle by coming through with his best game in the biggest con- test of the season. The boys waited a long time for joe to get started, but when he did!!! It was only right and proper that a great team such as this should be captained by a great athlete. And so it was. For in james Spanky McFarland, they had one of the greatest athletes that ever attended Xavier. Not limiting his talents to the gridiron, he also captained the Basketball Squad, and would easily have broken the All-Time School Scoring Record in that sport had he played the complete year. In football he was a smart, sharp-tackling, fast end. No amaz- ing qualities, you may say, but when all blended together they made an A-1 football player. So that's about it. A quick resume of the year and a few notes about the high spots . . . there are many instances, many happen- ings and many players that are not mentioned in this writing. If I were to attempt to name all the great Cadets and what they did to make this great team, my story would never end. But end it must, and so I take this op- portunity to say . . . Tl-us VARSITY Geiling, McAuliffe, McIntosh, Pfeifer, Lovely, Baldwin, Bailey, Garcia, McGuire, Grady, Brown The first dual match of the season, with jamaica High, was lost with a score of 862-869. This officially opened the season of 1941-1942 and after the first three matches had been lost, it looked as though the team would fall 'way below expectations. However the next match was won by the Van Dee Men against New York U. with a wide margin, 1547-1328. Less than a month after the Quinnipiac Tourney the N. Y. Stock Exchange Tourna- ment came up and the Maroon and Blue romped home with first place and the trophy for another year. Now things looked as though they were shaping up in the usual Xavier manner. While in Washington, the team fired in the Georgetown, Navy and Xavier Tri- angular Match and placed second with 1355 points. On the next day, they fired in the Marine Corps Tourney and won first place over some of the most prominent teams in the east with a score of 1338 points. Three weeks later the team again left home and with a busload of future Varsity men fired in the Connecticut State Championship, winning first place among the out of state teams when they turned in a total of 708. This was surely the old Xavier routine. It was at this time, however, that not only the team but also the school suffered a loss that everyone had hoped would never occur. Staff Sgt. Van Deusen was ordered to active duty as a Lieutenant in the Signal Corps for the duration. Mr. Furniss, the club moderator, was chosen to take over the team for the rest of the season and pitched in wholeheartedly. The last three tournaments of the season were coming up, each within a week of 114 EVENING PARADE Sgt Vin Deusen presents the trophy of the 69th Regiment to Col. Mooney Any afternoon on the range one another. The first was the 69th Regiment Tournament of which Xavier was the defend- ing champion. It was an important meet and the chances looked bad at the beginningg but the team came through the winner with a tally of 887, and again the beautiful 69th Trophy graced the office of the Headmaster. The second of these last three was the annual Triangular Shoot, composed of Admiral Farragut Academy, Bordentown and Xavier. The X-men sharpshooters again returned the victors. this time by one point, after firing a brisk 884. Capt. McGuire was the high individual of the three teams with 186. Then on the following Saturday came the last and all-important N. R. A. Inter- sectional Shoot. The team journeyed to Far Rockaway High where it was held and fired a rock solid 1067 to win first place. This score was automatically entered in the National Finals, and it is very possible that the Maroon and Blue will place in that too, As for the postal matches, the team won second place in the N. R. A. Bi-weeklies. first and second places in the W. R. Hearst Corps Area Matches, and first place in the Znd Corps Area Intercollegiate Competitions. The National Intercollegiate winners have not been announced as yet, but Xavier has a good chance for this title again this year, it is felt.
