Pope John XXIII made this assembly possible. He had the wisdom to foresee that the Church can fulfill its roll of teacher only by presenting the truth in a way understandable to the people of the age. His universally mourned death in June, 7963, attested to the profound influence he exerted on the Catholics of the day and the entire world. To Pope John, our Holy Father, we dedicate this book. 4 7887 7901 792i 7952 7956 7962 I I I I courtesy LIFE Magazme fcj 1962 Tume, Inc C 'I 0 U fl Cl 5- 5 .X .4 ,S L5 ' iw f A X gb gg 1, Q3 1, I x X 7, Xl. Bishop of Brooklyn All our people are iustly proud of the great success of our Diocesan Build- ing Campaign. The school building program to which His Excellency referred is indeed a great achievement, and it has given new life to education in Brooklyn. What the bishop failed to add, however, is that the Diocese is also proud of him, who, in education as in all other matters, has been a good shepherd to his flock. 6 fig' 69 X X ef i' MXJQ. x ' fl , W : My' I :I Es 'PARV N'vf?' Besides managing a full office schedule, he found time to moder- ate the Leo Honor Society, run a Satur- day Study Program, and conduct an ad- vanced placement English seminar. Always, Brother does the right thing, respected and liked by all he is, like Sir Thomas More, , . . a man of an angel's wit and singular learning . . . of mar- velous mirth and pastimes, and some- times of as sad as gravity. In his rookie year as a Varsity coach Mr. Woods realized the trust placed in him by the Athletic Department. Mr. Woods put into effect his ex- perience acquired as last year's J.V. coach. We hope that his future leadership as coach will be an inspiration to the up-coming Varsity teams and that he may have many more seasons as success- ful as this one. APPRENTICESHIP Experience exhibited by seasoned senior Clippers coupled with the ambition of the up-coming iuniors led our Varsity Clippers to the most suc- cessful season thus far. The culmination of the season was the play-off game against an undefeat- ed Power Memorial team at Fordham University. This game typified the team's continual spirit of driving determination and also dispelled any doubt about the ability of our Clippers, who provided Power with its toughest opponent this year. The success of their season is a tribute to the team's continued hard work. Varsity Y ,f,. s,..s,.a.,s-1 ..... :sfsaws.s,ss.aNasNs.sssss:ss ..-sf. as-M. ..tt s.mw -.eww-asm!-Q . -s ss -sf Top Row: T. FR Q '? 4 'ia Senior Officers TIMOTHY P. BYRN ES Treasurer Tim was invaluable as SAC's treasurer, and was deservedly popular at Xaverian. In his official capacity, Tim ran a highly successful raffle drive and established a precedent with SAC's weekly financial report. He fought hard for his class as its president for three years and as an intramural leader for four. ln addition, he played a snappy second base for our Varsity baseball team in his Sophomore and Junior years. IIO ROBERT K. FLEMING Vice-President As an underclass trackman, sodalist, and class officer, Bob built a firm roundwork for his leader 9 . ship in the Senior year. A captain of the track team in his Senior year, Bob was truly outstanding in middle distance running. He displayed his skill by setting three school records which, in the fore- seen future, seem unlikely to be broken. As a result of this outstanding running ability, he won a scholarship to Fordham University. Distinguished though he was for school servce, Bob will be best remembered as a gentleman who was always con- siderate of his fellow students. ROBERT M. MARINO President Always ready to help when help was need- ed, Bob proved to be a popular man among his classmates for his four years at Xaverian. As an upper classman, he was an executive of SAC, an influential figure on the dance committee and the Junior and Senior prom committees, and a school cheerleader. However, Bob is best known as a track man who won more than forty medals. His service, combined with a knack for leadership, made Bob a natural choice for school president, and his record as president fully iustified our confidence in him. PETER A. REDPATH Secretary Pete was liked and admired by all who knew him at Xaverian. Although a hard work- er a't the books, he is able to claim in addition, fouruyear loyalty to our track team and to the Sodality. As the secretary of the student activi- ties council and member of its dance commit- tee Pete has shown the sense of self-confidence and duty which will prove essential in the mili- tary career which he intends to pursue. Committee Heads ANTHONY A. LOFFREDO Social Chairman Tony has worked unceasingly in helping to build Xaverian's reputation, and in doing so has chalked up an impressive record for himself, a record which led to his being chosen as Xaverian's Hardest Worker. Best known' as one of our top Varsity baseball pitchers, he was also a four year member of the school basketball team. Tony represented his class in SAC for three years and as a senior was chosen for the post of Co-Chairman of the Dance Committee. Two year membership in the Leo Honor Society indicates that success awaits Tony in the future. LAWRENCE J. PETRILLO Social Chairman Unofficial poet laureate of the school, Larry's style in print and in person is unmistakable. His genius with English ranges from yearbook captions to feature articles and Haiku for the X-Press. Larry's four year service on SAC's Dance Committee culmi- nated in his appointment to it as Co-Chairman in his senior year. Add to these his natural inclina- tion for athletics as well as skill in foreign lan- guages and Larry emerges as a well-balanced Xaverian graduate. JOHN W. YATES Athletic Chairman Jack Yates, our Athletic Chairman, has the rare gift of succeeding at everything he tries. As an underclassman, he was a Sodalist, class officer, mem- ber of SAC's Dance Committee and an intramural referee, and was the only Junior to win a school service trophy. As a Senior, he ran the intramural tournaments throughout the year, wrote a weekly column for the LOCAL and won first prize in the school science fair. HENRY A. NOCELLA Cultural Chairman Henry's skills as an actor and as an orator, dually testified by ringing ap- plause at school plays and numberless trophies from interscholastic contests, earned him an officership in the Drama Club, the presidency of the Ryken Debate and speech society and SAC's cultural chairmanship. Besides these, he served as Secretary of the Leo Honor Society in his Senior year in addition to being active in intramurals for all four years. ROBERT C. WILSON Religious Chairman As prefect of the Senior Sodality, Bob was instrumental in developing a truly effective program of spiritual improvement for high school seniors. In his other key position, editor-in-chief of the X-Press, Bob demonstrated an excellent combina- tion of iournalistic and organizational ability by turning out an admirable publi- cation. Having risen to the top in two fields of endeavor our Religious Chair- man should achieve much success in his chosen profession, teaching. - -use EDWARD .I. I fx The X- Unknown VALEDICTORIAN-Richard Jaeger SALUTATORIAN-Joseph Kelly X-cerpts WHAT IS IT THAT CHARACTERIZES THE CATHOLIC GEN- TLENIAN? . . . one who never inflicts pain. The gentle- man, then, is truly a gentle man. It is evident that the motivating factor behind the gentle- man is LOVE. Pope John XXIII has shown us that Christian CHARITY is necessary for men to live in peace and that Chris- tian charity can be successfully practiced even in the twentieth century. We say, quite truthfully, that the school has been forming us toward this goal, that the work ancl time of our teachers have been devoted to this task.
