MA THEMA TICQ A NECESSARY TOOL The Mathematics Department continues to improve upon its courses to achieve the variety necessary for the future needs of the student body. To accomplish this task, the program is divided into three tracts: accelerated, academic, and general-business, in order to provide a firm math foundation for all students. Two semester courses in computer programming are offered also to compose a well-rounded education for any occupation. In our demanding, modern society, a wide background in mathematics is a necessity; therefore, members of the Department advise each student to pur- sue a full sequence of high school math, the tool for many other fields of learning.

In addition to the choices of aca- demic, general, or business English, ninth and tenth grade students may now opt for the accelerated course. This new program offers our espe- cially talented students a challenging introduction to literary forms and gen- res, along with a greater emphasis on independent research and disciplined writing. Also in a continuing effort to improve curriculum, the Department has expanded two mini courses to full semester length: Language and Expo- sition and Literature and the Research Paper. Moreover, all English pro- grams have more stress on compos- ition and vocabulary this year as the Department strives to create an enjoy- able atmosphere while working for a high standard of language usage. We would like to welcome two new members to our English staff: Mrs. Pat Rittle and Mr. Dave Martin. Filling two vacancies, Mrs. Rittle transferred from Wyomissing Middle School, and Mr. Martin recently taught in the Cata- saqua, Pa., High School. 20
