ACADEMICQ zzzzzz xxazzw 13 ADMINIQ TRA TION-ENCOURA GING QTUDEN T PROGRESS Providing a quality education for our students is the primary goal of the Admin- istration. By planning and supervising a curriculum which allows the student many opportunities and choices, the Administration aids the student body in developing academically, physically, socially, and morally. Being their most important concern, the curriculum is studied and discussed each year to select qualified personnel, equipment, learning materials, and courses. The Administration gives direction to the courses through district-wide priorities set by the School Board. As in the past, cooperation with students, teach- ers, and the community has been excellent, and the Administration is certain that the existing atmosphere will continue in the future. No. 1. Mr. Davis assists all ninth and tenth grade students and the Vo-Tech stu- dents in eleventh and twelfth grade; Mrs. Eltonhead counsels the business, college preparatory, and general stu- dents in eleventh and twelfth. The ninth grade also receives additional aid through a course dealing with career guidance. MA THEMA TICQ A NECESSARY TOOL The Mathematics Department continues to improve upon its courses to achieve the variety necessary for the future needs of the student body. To accomplish this task, the program is divided into three tracts: accelerated, academic, and general-business, in order to provide a firm math foundation for all students. Two semester courses in computer programming are offered also to compose a well-rounded education for any occupation. In our demanding, modern society, a wide background in mathematics is a necessity; therefore, members of the Department advise each student to pur- sue a full sequence of high school math, the tool for many other fields of learning. In addition to the choices of aca- demic, general, or business English, ninth and tenth grade students may now opt for the accelerated course. This new program offers our espe- cially talented students a challenging introduction to literary forms and gen- res, along with a greater emphasis on independent research and disciplined writing. Also in a continuing effort to improve curriculum, the Department has expanded two mini courses to full semester length: Language and Expo- sition and Literature and the Research Paper. Moreover, all English pro- grams have more stress on compos- ition and vocabulary this year as the Department strives to create an enjoy- able atmosphere while working for a high standard of language usage. We would like to welcome two new members to our English staff: Mrs. Pat Rittle and Mr. Dave Martin. Filling two vacancies, Mrs. Rittle transferred from Wyomissing Middle School, and Mr. Martin recently taught in the Cata- saqua, Pa., High School. 20 No. 1. Mr. Kenneth L. Ness No. 2. Mr. Charles H. ACCELERA TEQ The comprehensive curriculum of the Social Studies Department was improved this year through the addition of an accelerated program in Ameri- can Studies for freshmen and sophomores. Furthermore, Family Living, an extension of the highly successful Marriage Preparation mini-course, was added to the twenty-two elective courses offered to junior and senior stu- dents. By providing a wide dimension of learning experiences, members of the Social Studies Department hope to provide the motivation, understand- ing, and knowledge necessary to produce aware and active citizens. VARIED CO-ED PROGRAMS OFFERED IN GYM CLAQQEQ The Physical Education Department continues to supply a varied co-ed program to maintain the physical fitness of the student body and to break the monotony of the academics. Aside from the required gym classes, three times a week for freshmen and sophomores and twice for juniors and sen- iors, the department also teaches the health classes for jun- iors. Instruction in the skills and techniques of many sports enhances sportsmanship, cooperation, and teamwork: qual- ities which will aid students through life in work as well as play. QTRIVEQ T0 MEE T CHALLENGES Now, more than ever before, the Business Education Department strives to meet the many challenges of a rapidly changing business community. Although busi- ness education is geared mainly towards the ever- increasing needs of the vocationally oriented students, frequently non-business majors also are attracted to the wide variety of fundamental business courses, ranging from accounting to word processing. Hence, the final goal of the Business Education Department is the development of highly qualified students with mar- ketable skills. No. 1. Mrs. Mary Lee Olsen, Chairperson No. 3. Mrs. Marjorie B. Both men share the responsibility of teaching the theory and composition of music to the advanced music class. The Home Economics and Industrial Arts Department, managed by Mrs. Wealand and Mr. Stephens respectively, provide skills which may be utilized in daily life or can be expanded into a satisfying career. Mr. Rausch teaches the mandatory course of driver edu- cation to sophomores. He also goes out in the school car for on-the-road-experience with students. The Fine Arts Department, Mrs. Ritter's domain, offers a four year course for the serious art major, along with an arts and crafts course taken twice a week for the dabbler. 3O No. 1. Competition was held throughout the week with events such as the pyramid, the tug-of-war and var- ious races. At the end of the activities the scores were tallied; sophomores had the lead with the seniors close behind, followed by the juniors and freshmen, respec- tively. The winning factor fell to the hall decorations done to the themes of movies of 1977. The seniors accomplished a satisfying victory with their interpretation of HStar Wars, the juniors took second with HThe Deep, and the sophomores and freshmen followed with HRollercoaster and HThe Bad News Bears in Breaking Training, respectively. After the close competition, the triumphant seniors wiped the sweat from their foreheads, while the sophomores vowed to win next year. 44 No. 1. P. Gehris. No. 2. K. Dougherty, S. Witmer. No. 3. M. During the half- time of the last football game, the Spartans took time out to watch last year's Queen, Katie Bewley, crown Bernie Parker Homecoming Queen of 1978. A little car trouble did not dampen the spirits of the fans or the other cheerful candi- dates: Lisa Reider, Leslie Kline, Corinne Charming, and Becky DeLapp. In all, the day was a fine finish to a spirited week. This year, nine seniors and twenty-four juniors were inducted into the Wyomissing Area chapter of the National Honor Society, advised by Mr. Reese Davis. Members of the Society must maintain a 3.0 average and display the quali- ties of character, leadership, and service. Second year mem- bers expressed their opinions on the various traits that a National Honor Society member should possess. At the following banquet, Dr. Robert McBride, Dean of Academic Instruction at Albright College, conveyed his ideas on educational achievement. Mr. and Mrs. Arden zeIL The Zeimer's 176 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS The Colophon staff of 1978 wishes to extend its sincere appreciation to those who contributed their time and money to the publication of this yearbook. We offer special thanks to Mr. Charles Gebensleben for govern- ing our financial matters, Mr. Robert Rasbridge for expert handling of senior portraits and photography, and Mr. Edward Patrick, Taylor Publishing Company representative, for his valuable counseling. Our deepest thanks go to our advisor, Mr. Charles Bell, whose knowledge, experience, and guidance ena- bled the staff to proudly produce the 1978 Colophon. With his help, the staff attempted to capture the faces, activities, and events of this memorable year. The Class of 78 deserves congratulations on its successful patron drive. We wish to thank the members of the community, the faculty, and the students for their generosity and support. I wish to extend my thanks to the entire yearbook staff for their long hours and hard work that is clearly evident in the quality of this book. To everyone involved, I thank you. Jane Richardson Editor To the ancient Greeks, the HColophoni' was an inscription placed at the end of the manuscript with facts rela- tive to its production. The 1978 Colophon staff has attempted to capture the events and the spirit of its senior year at Wyomissing Area High School. We affix this HCoIophon inscription e an identifying symbol of excel. Ience signifying the termination of an accomplished endeavor in the hope that our yearbook has merited this mark of excellence. 25 A W WM ,, U3 WW fig x y. w A :' . Q . Lam n 1 x x I i. . .
