Dr. B. Henry Shafer, Supervising Principal ACADEMICS It was Browning who said, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? Perhaps the poet was saying that man must have faith in something beyond him- self if his life is to be meaningful and re- warding. A life is truly dismal when the in- dividual has nothing but himself to think about and to serve. Psychologists tell us that sound mental health requires that man have a purpose, a cause, a faith to which he can dedicate himself. In an age when man looks to science to answer all questions, when even certain the- ologians tell us that God is dead , trust in one's fellow man and faith in some Uni- versal Power beyond ourselves are still the only bases for a wholesome philosophy of life. Consider, also, the possibility that Browning was making the poetic point that man's hopes and aspirations can be reached only through imagimztion. A work of art or literature, an invention, a better world in which to live, an outstanding issue of the Colophon-all require the exercise of imagination, a mental reach beyond the im- mediate grasp of our senses. Serendipity, or fortunate happenstance, does sometimes occur. But progress and achievement seldom result from chance. They are the product of knowledge, imagination, dedication, and courage. B.
