Dr. B. Henry Shafer, Supervising Principal ACADEMICS It was Browning who said, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? Perhaps the poet was saying that man must have faith in something beyond him- self if his life is to be meaningful and re- warding. A life is truly dismal when the in- dividual has nothing but himself to think about and to serve. Psychologists tell us that sound mental health requires that man have a purpose, a cause, a faith to which he can dedicate himself. In an age when man looks to science to answer all questions, when even certain the- ologians tell us that God is dead , trust in one's fellow man and faith in some Uni- versal Power beyond ourselves are still the only bases for a wholesome philosophy of life. Consider, also, the possibility that Browning was making the poetic point that man's hopes and aspirations can be reached only through imagimztion. A work of art or literature, an invention, a better world in which to live, an outstanding issue of the Colophon-all require the exercise of imagination, a mental reach beyond the im- mediate grasp of our senses. Serendipity, or fortunate happenstance, does sometimes occur. But progress and achievement seldom result from chance. They are the product of knowledge, imagination, dedication, and courage. B. Henry Shafer Mrs. Jeanne Miller, secretary Mrs. Nancy M. Troutman, treasurer The classification of students into grades according to age, with a particular goal for each grade level, was introduced by john Sturum in Strassburg, Germany, in 1537. This program was introduced into the American school system in 1847 at the Quincy Grammar School of Boston. Regretfully, this concept of a graded school according to age has remained with us. In the 1966-1967 school year, Wyomissing High School became actively involved in the educational renaissance. The Board of School Directors, the administration and the teachers have committed themselves to- a school which will continually seek ways forhtheir students to receive the best education possible. Dr. James Olivero evaluates our new school program. 25 INNOVATIONS, INDIVIDUALIZATICDN Schools seek to achieve the purposes of education by teaching students those subjects that would seem most beneficial to them. It is a function of elementary and secondary education to provide them with the basic skills and knowledge that are essential to their future growth. No longer can education be terminal with high school, college, or graduate school. Education must be a continuing process. However, perhaps the most fundamental factors in the teaching-learning processes are those which have been given the least effort in their development-inspiring students to learn and pro- viding an environment where students may develop the skills of inquiry and discovery according to per- sonal interests and abilities. It is these processes which will provide us with the capabilities of meeting the challenge of the future. In the traditional school with traditional instruction it is observed that most students develop a dependence upon the teachers for the knowledge which they acquire. The emphasis is upon teacher-directed activities and students seek only that which is requested of them. We also find classes of comparable ability and size with equal amounts of time allotted to each subject and each student. It is believed that instruc- tion organized in this manner falsely assumes that all students need the same amount of time for learning in all subject areas and that all subject areas need equal amounts of time to realize the desired results. This concept of teaching in doses retards the progress of the academically talented students and forces the less academically talented students to progress at a rate which is not within their realm. Since the 1930's educators have experimented with groupings of students. They have been seeking the best possible method to accommodate the diverse rates and abilities of students. It was the first step to- wards individualizing instruction, but in terms of the group, not the individual. I-Iomogeneous grouping has fulfilled its destiny by bringing us to the next point of departure-an organizational pattern that will more nearly and effectively fulfill the aspiration of individualizing instruction. - More recently such concepts as team teaching, large and small group instruction, modular scheduling, instructional media, and nongraded schools have been pioneered. Each has merit of its own and is educa- tionally sound. However, they require that the public in general be educated as to their worth. The new concepts do not have the image of education past and are rejected on this basis. Many point with pride at their new schools and feel secure that their children are receiving the best education possible. However, providing new buildings with modern equipment does not insure better or improved education. It is only through the educational program and improved instructional organization and teaching procedures that this can be achieved. ' David R. Barrett, III ACADEMICS Instructional Media. The team, led by John Costenbader and Steve Woodward, worked hard in anticipation for their first game. Unfortunately, many early season injuries hindered the squad's progress. Under the leadership of Mr. Gebensleben and Mr. Hoffert the team finished with a respectable log of four wins and five losses. The Warriors were able to stop, at least once, all teams except Daniel Boone and Collegeville. junior Bob Restrepo took over at quarterback. john Costenbader, senior fullback, was the team's leading ground gainer and scorer. Other backs who saw much action were Dave Tierney, Scott Wood- ward, and John Sharrnan. The Warrior front wall was composed of: Steve Woodward, john Hyle, jim Kiehne, Tom Brophy, Don Wilson, Tom Breitinger, Scott Ulmer, Charles Fisher, Pete Bausher, and Andy Maier. Warriors might have gone all the way if Mike Geis- sler's sprained ankle had not occurred three days be- fore the Exeter meet. The harriers were plagued by two more injuries which slowed Pete Patton and John Jones. Milfofd and Mr. D. C. Shirk for their unstinting help in the production of this book. Indeed, the Colophon Staff of 1967 wishes once again to extend special thanks to these two men--to Mr. Milford for his guidance in all phases of preparation and to Mr. Shirk for his indispensable assistance with the pho- tography. Mr. Charles Gebensleben, who advised the staff in business matters, and Mrs. Bonnie Ritter, who offered artistic criticism, also played an integral part in the printing of the 1967 Colophon. The staff is grateful to the Taylor Publishing Company, Loring Studios, and to all others who made publishing the 1967 Colophon possible. COLOPHON TRIBUTE The Greek symbol Colophon signifies the termination of a work well-done. The contemporary meaning of the word is summit, the peak of accomplishment. We, the staff of the 1967 edition of the Colophon, affix this symbol of pride in our completed work, and hope that in your judgment our efforts will have merited it.
