The cast and crew worked hard to make the show a success. It took many long hours, lots of talent, and total cooperation to put the presentation together. Debbie Steinhauer and John Schultz played the leading characters of Nellie For- bush and Emile de Becque. The comedic roles of Bloody Mary and Luther Billis were por- trayed by Jayne Eaton and Jim Rifendifer. Tom Lally and Debbie Keller were the young lovers, Joe Cable and Liat. These people were complemented by very talented supporting actors, choruses, and dancers. The show would not be complete without the finejobs done by the orchestra under the direction of Robert Henderson and the stage crew under Tom Jones. Cathy Roccograndi directed the produc- tion and was assisted by Frank Edwards, choral director, and Delores Weiss, choreographer. Miriam Hannon had charge of wardrobe, and Gerald S. Pearce acted as business manager. The students enjoyed putting on the play as much as the audiences enjoyed watching it. z pg . w .-Q-.44 - gg--.M- 4 F I 7Wa,,fH' ,vw CAST OF CHARACTERS fin order of appearancej Ngana . Jerome ...... The WVW Marching Band's 1978-79 season was more successful and productive than any in past years. They provided a good part of the spirit and support at all of this year's football games, not to mention the featured entertainment. Under the direction of Mr. James Selingo, the 122 member band including majorettes, silks, and color guard, did an admirable job as a result of hard work. After a rather early start in July, band members practiced on a voluntary basis. A summer camp was held in late August. Throughout the season, the band caught the eyes of many with their precise marching and colorful band front. This spring, the band will travel to Ottawa, Canada to be adjudicated by a panel of professional musicians and musical educators. This will be their second par- ticipation in such a competition. Last year they com- peted in the program at Walt Disney World in Florida. Several fund-raising events were held this year to finance the trip. We all wish the band lots of luck. However, Coach Yaniger and his Spartans had new ideas for a new season, and ultimately gave the followers a graphic idea of what hard work and determination can still accomplish in this world. It took a lot of sweat and a lot of heart, but they made it happen. Valley West surprised the league with a 9-2 record and one of the most awesome defenses seen here in a long, long time. And lest we forget-the two losses were early season squeakers by a total of 8 points. It was the seniors that turned this program upside down, their attitude and spirit carried us through the season, stated Coach Yaniger. The team was confronted with a host of early problems. Coach Yaniger had to install a new offense Dave Holly, starting quarterback '78, suffered an arm injury which restricted him to the kicking team Cleading punter in the leaguej. Dave Burgess, a certain all-star, was injured on the first day of practice. Jerry Kellar, Mike Fulton, and Joe Dunay also suffered through an injury-ridden season. Valley West opened the regular season with a stunning 10-0 victory over a touted Pittston Area squad. This was only the first of seven shutouts. The defense was really psyched, they held the Pats to minus 29 yards rushing. With one victory under their belt the Spartans hosted Bishop Hoban. The offense showed some improvement. They gained 300 yards rushing, and Mark Jane fired three TD passes to lead the Spartans to an easy 47-6 victory. WVW ran into a roadblock called Wyoming Area. The offense was unable to get on track, and the Warriors squeaked by Valley West 7-6. Behind by seven in the second half, the Spartans scored a TD, however the extra point was blocked and WVW suffered their first defeat of the season. The Spartans next hosted defending Area champions G.A.R. The defense played tough throughout the game, but once again the offense was unable to mobilize. For the second game in a row the offense could not complete a pass. Eventually GAR capitalized on a bad snap in a punting situation and scored the first and only touchdown in the game C6-OJ. The Spartans bounced back from the last two games and they immobilized Coughlin in the rain, I8- 0. For the third straight game the offense could not generate a pass completion. Fortunately, they rushed for 300 yards. The Burgundy and Gold traveled to Dallas to play one of their best games of the season. Sophomore Jay Rauscher was installed at the QB slot and threw 3 TD passes. Dallas was overwhelmed by a awesome Spartan defenseg the Spartans won a 34-0 shut-out. Lake Lehman traveled to the Spartan Stadium. Both the defense and rejuvenated offense combined to defeat the Knights 21-0. Brian Masgay had an outstanding game. He scored on an 85-yard trap play for the offense, the longest run in the WVW Stadium in a long time. In defense, Brian picked off a record three interceptions. Hanover Area, arriving with only l3 or 14 players, was an easy 33-0 victory for West. Mark Koval was justifiably voted MVP with 3 touchdowns and an interception. The Mad Dog defense remained invincible as they held the Hawkeyes in check for their fourth straight shutout. The Spartans chalked up their fifth consecutive shutout as they blanked Nanticoke 22-0. Mark Koval once again stole the show with two TD's and two interceptions. WVW next traveled to Meyers with revenge in mind. In recent years Meyers had used the Spartans like they owned them. Enthusiasm and emotion ran highg an upset was in the making. It was over almost before it started. The Spartans were quick to put points on the board and Meyers never really knew what hit them. Junior Ben Barsh ran for 100 yards, and the defense, led by Brian Andres, forced 4 interceptions as the Spartans pulled off a 34-12 rousting. Meyers' touchdowns were the results of mistakes made by the offense. These were the first points scored on Valley West in five games. The final game ofthe season saw WVW and Bishop O'Reilly continue their crosstown rivalry. The Spartans, defense again proved impenetrable and the Queensmen went down 47-0. Coach Yaniger played the entire bench. It was an incredible season for WVW football. Altogether they broke 23 individual records, which is a record in itself. The defense was the best ever to come out of this area. The attitude and aggressiveness shown by the players was phenominal. The Mad- Dogs have added a new dimension to the game. No one will ever forget the WVW football team 'of 1978! Coach Yaniger feels that Spartans will win them all next year! 154 0,4 xJ X W-an . F' WW! 91 f:f5 -wa: ., X N N Q X XX X Es H .4 as Wm X 29. The 1978 Wyoming Valley West soccer team posted its first winning season in the short history of the sport. The team was led to the outstanding season by tri-captains John Goryl, Hugh Jones, and Mike Chisarick. The year started slowly as the team struggled to a 1-5 record in exhibition play against Allentown- Dieruff, Benton, Salisbury Township, and Millville, The first win of the year came against Millville, a team that the Spartans had never defeated. The Spartans were later to lose to Millville, at Millville, 2-l in overtime. During the exhibition season, Coaches Wilson and Jones made numerous changes in personnel and offensive and defensive formations. Because of these changes and the experience gained in playing a difficult exhibition schedule, the team proceeded to have an outstanding record in league play. The team played in the Southern Division of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Soccer League and won the division with a record of6 wins - l loss - l' tie. Highlights of the league season were numerous, but most satisfying to the team was defeating Bishop Hafey of Hazelton and Montrose, defending league champions, for the first time ever and defeating Wyoming Seminary 5-3 under the lights at Spartan Stadium before a large turnout of ans. The team played Forest City, winner of the Northern division, for the overall league championship and defeated them by a score of 2-0 on goals by John Goryl and John Phillips. For goalie Mike Chisarick it was his eighth shutout of his three-year career. 32 an Q .ff:r,ffi.3x.. . gig. Row 2: Kathy Flynn, Kathy Russatt, Leah Stratton, Bonnie Hugiek, Tina Nevolas, Cathy Castor, and Robin Jimmie, manager. The team played with a renewed enthusiasm and consequently l9 girls received letters. This group was composed of 9 seniors, 3 juniors, and 7 sophomores. The team practiced a lot harder this year and played much better than the records show. stated Coach Kelly. With 20 players returning for the '79 season, even better things can be expected next year! 161 Hi-iii' li- - l I1 l Row I: Scott Jeffrey, Mark Perugino, Tom Michalek, Mike Coury, Neil Opet, Paul Crossin, Dave Hrubowchak, Tricia Crossin, Dave Shoenholtz, Coach Sandy Mackey. After having the largest turnout in Valley West history, 27, the Putters went on to post a 7-5 record. League competition was 'fierce this year, but the team never gave up in their pursuit of another win- ning season. The squad was led by seniors Tom Michalek, Mark Perugino, Scott Jeffrey, and Mike Corey. The golf team was very well represented in dis- tricts. Tom Michalek finished in 6th place out of66 competitors. Tom was also named to the West All- Star Team, the Sunday Independent All-Star Team, and the All Scholastic Team. Other team members competing in the District 2 tournament were Tricia Crossin, Terri Herring, and Marlene Kaminski. ' The extra large turnout this year should enhance West's chances for '79. The call for candidates was enthusiastically answered as twenty-odd Spartans vied for seven starting positions. After three weeks oftrying practice held at Hamilton Park, Kingston, the team took shape. Led by six underclassmen, the Spartans compiled an impressive 1 l-2 record and drove to a second place finish against tough league opponents. Harriet Kornblatt played a large part in the Spartan's success. She finished the season with only one loss and was runner up in district competition. It was a rewarding year for the girls, and the experienced underclassmen returning next year promise hard times for all opponents. Congratulations to Coach Carol Hopson and the team. Wyoming Valley West can truly take pride in its first Girls' Tennis Team. feystkqi Y 5 W 5 1 Row l: Andy Barilla, Rich Levenoskie, Mark Belenski, Brian Kulick, Drew Davis, Paul Crossin, Ron Pincowski. Despite the loss of three starters, two of whom were all-scholastic, Spartan basketball proved to be very impressive. In exhibition play, the Spartans dominated their opponents, beating West Hazleton, Montrose, West Scranton, and Jersey Shore. The only team able to defeat the Spartans was Reading In the annual WARMland Tournament, the Spartans continued to win, defeating Hazleton, Williamsport, and St. Joe's of Philly. The victory over St. Joe's was considered by many, including Coach Mascioli, to be the highlight of the season. As starter Mark Belenski remarked, 'fBeating St. Joe's meant that we could play ball with anyone in the statef' In the finals, however, the Spartans lost to a powerful Dunmore team, 53-42. In their first league game, the Spartans were narrowly defeated by Bishop Hoban, 55-51, but came back with a 61-47 win over Coughlin. Again, the Spartans lost a close game, this time to Wyoming Area with a score of 65-60. The Spartans then went on to defeat Meyers, Pittston Area, Nanticoke, and Bishop O'Reilly. In second-half action, Hoban remained a stumbling block for the Spartans, defeating them by a mere two points. Coughlin suffered its second loss to the Spartan cagers while Wyoming Area once again defeated the Spartans with a slight margin. Coming out of their exhibition season with a 10-0 record and emerging as champions of the preseason Marywood College - Scranton Tribune Invitational Tournament, the girls basketball team started regular seasonfplay in high gear. They continued their winning streak until a narrow defeat by a fierce Nanticoke squad halted it at I5-0. The girls were not daunted by the loss, however, and bounced back in superb form to end the season 21-3. Game after game the squad intimidated and over- powered many lesser teams by executing an almost flawless full court press distinctive of Wyoming Valley West- which was effective in holding area opponents to less than 30 points. In the Coughlin game the girls revealed a devastating offense by outscoring the Crusaders 93-27 on their home court. The outstanding achievements of the squad were due in part to the two team captains Deanna Sabalesky and Robin Potera, who led the league in scoring. Deanna, only a junior, hit the prestigious one thousand point mark two games prior to the season's end. The glass-backed baskets and bright lights proved a hin- derance all year. The team has lost only one varsity player due to graduation, Robin Potera, and will be overflowing with talent and energy, ready to face the challenge ofthe '79- '80 season as this year's team has done, proudly and with Spartan spirit! i x K l .ev jk Q3 ,-N flrffayk f igfgkflkffaim an MQ A uf vi J S Y 5--1-vC 'J 4 Q RE TLI G vi 9' I 179 ' S'f 5,7 WZ MQW .F-,Q ik XA X 6- gf E , Fe mf? 4 V .,,,i , , V, 'naw' uk, '31 5 Q Q , s f 715 5 km J E! Turley is no newcomer to the swim scene. He has coached both W.V.W. Boys' and Wilkes College Swim Teams. Leading the Spartan Mermaids were co-captains Leah Marie Stratton and Patti Frey. Underclassmen Karen Kovalchick, Marti Ann Frey, Doreen O'Hara, Karen Zolner, senior Patty Dudish, and divers Sherry Zolner and Lisa Pencavage contributed heavily. Leah Marie Stratton paced the team in the District II Championship by grabbing second place in two individual events and placing tenth and eleventh in the state meet. In all, eleven team members earned letters. Six will return next year, providing a promising outlook. Senior letter-winners were Leah Marie Stratton, Patti Frey, Patty Dudish Tricia Crossin, and Beth Malia. Junior lettermen were Marti Ann Frey, Karen Kovalchick, and Sherry Zolner. GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL At the end of the girls' volleyball season, Coach Don Hudak had these encouraging words to say, Although our record 4-8 wasn't very impressive, I feel that we had a very successful year and I am looking forward to next year's team with more optimism in the winning column. The girls' team wasn't all that bad because most of their games were tiebreakers. A late start and a short stretch of practice sessions hampered the team, and the girls really didn't get it together until mid-season, which, ofcourse, was too late. With 4 returning varsity starters and a strong J.V. squad, next year's record should show improvement. Maybe the girls' team would have been more successful ifthey would have listened to the famous words ofCoach Hudak, Three Hits Apiece Girls, Three Hits Apiece! The boys opened the season by beating a powerful Easton team. From that point on they made winning look easy and defeat impossible. Many new records were set by the dynamic Spartan tracksters. They jumped higher - Chris Feistle flew over the bar at 6'2 g and farther - Brian Masgay triple-jumped 44'83A g and threw with more force - Mark Duda hurled the discus for l63'l0 fa record he broke four times during the yearjq and John Veshinski threw the javelin l9l'4 - farther than any one at W.V.W. ever before. The '79 squad had extremely talented men at every post, athletes who proved their worth time and time again as they dominated both opponents and score board. Not content with the league championship, the Spartans continued their reign ofterror and captured the District Il crown. Mark Duda, John Veshinski, and Brian Masgay carried the name of Wyoming Valley West even further - to the State meet - where they placed 2nd, 7th, and 9th respectively - and very respectably. The clean sweep by the Spartans came as no surprise. Brunner-coached teams have made winning a habit. Brunner, Harry, Lukavitch, Trebendis and the boys really put it all together. In true championship tradition - with Spartan spirit, with winning style, with class - the girls' spring track and field team could have been the model from which these terms were coined. As Coach Brunner said to the team early in the season, lt is quality, not quantity, that counts g and this year's squad, one of the smallest ever, showed their quality in the form ofpoints on the score board. 191 The girls closed the season with a zero in the loss column. The win column sparkled with victories over both Williamsport and Crestwood and the overwhelming wins over Dallas, l24-8g Hanover, 122-103 and Bishop Hoban, ll9-13. The girls retained their league championship, a symbol of hard work and deter- mination. At Districts the team proved to be the major stumbling block for other area teams - an obstacle they failed to clear. The W.V.W. Spartan girls won a hands-down victory. The District winners who advanced to state competition were Cheryl Wallace, Deanna Sabelsky, Debbie Sabalesky, Karen Pyros, Bonnie Marks, Amy Gross, Sharon Phillips, Maureen Kinney, Michele Smith, Cindy Worlinsky, and Carol Frisbie. Compared to the expected season schedule of I9 seven-inning games the girls spent I8 innings celebrating their successes. Of the seven games the squad lost, live were to teams who later advanced to the soft- ball playoffs, while the remaining two were squeakers. Perhaps the greatest obstacle our girls had to overcome this year was the chal- lenge of a harder and more competitive division. The '79 squad found themselves in the midst of such teams as Nanticoke, Wyoming Area, Coughlin, and Bishop O'Reilly.
