With Mr. Davis as advisor, and Eugene Morgan as president, the Student Council of -15 busiecl it- self with many school activities. Early in the year, the Council sponsored the most successful magazine campaign ever conducted. The proceeds were sufficient to cover the cost of an en- tirely new motion picture outfit including C1 projector, speakers, screen. and a microphone. An assembly committee with Elaine Van Sweden as chairman assumed complete responsibility for the year's assembly schedule. The assemblies were varied and pleasing to all. Through Student Council action, the number of school dances permitted was increased by one. Early in March, our president Eugene Morgan left for the Air Corps. He was replaced by vice-president Elaine Van Sweden. Dc Puit, Orhil .fl - Early this fall, the Seniors went to work and se- lected an energetic staff for the task of producing the 1945 Orbit . Gordon Belcl, who has proved to be a very ambi- tious and willing worker, was chosen Editor-In-Chief, with his two able assistants, Erma Perry and Betty Fahnle. The task of Business Manager was very etiiciently handled by Herb Schuiling and his capable assistant, Marjorie Struik. Don Groelsema was chosen Literary Editor and Jack De Puit took care of the Sports Angle. The art work is credited to Louise Van Prooyen. Wlith the cooperation of all to secure tilm, Eugene Donelson, Photographer, and his as- sistant, Marilyn Van l-loeven were able to complete their job successfully. The typing work was left to Bonnie Evarts, Geraldine Groen and Eleanor Boersma. A number of problems arose because of war con- ditions, but after many headaches the staff has as- sembled a book which in years to come will bring to the students pleasant memories of the year 1945. Portraying school life and its activities down to the most minute detail, this was the task of the Beacon statl. Under the able supervision of Mr. Welcli, faculty advisor, and Miss Haines, typing advisor, the Beacon cast its journalistic light throughout the high school and community as it completed one of the most successful years in its history. Although the editorial stat? of the publication was composed entirely of girls, sports and other masculine activities received the same splendid coverage which had character- ized the Beacon in previous years. Witli Elaine Thomas and Mathilda Otten serving as co-editors, the paper not only enlightened the students as to recent trends of romance about the school, but also presented the latest in sports, club news, interviews, exchange, and news from the music and commercial depart- ments. Helen Crull took over one of the most masculine jobs of the all-girl staff as she portrayed Viking sport affairs to the many Beacon readers. Betty Engstrom added a literary touch to the publication as editor of that department, while Lois Van Malsen, feature ecli- tor, and her staff of reporters, provided the students with plenty of current news hot off the presses . At the bottom of every school romance one could find Neda Runyon and Marge Struik -hastily scribbling down the details for the gossip column of the next Beacon. The job of keeping the school publication out of the red was handled very ably by Marilyn Van Hoeven, Beacon business manager. The Mixed Chorus under the direction of Miss Runk was our largest choral group this year. The choral activities were numerous. At Christmas time the chorus took part in the come munity carol sing. During Holy Wleelc, the chorus sang in the annual student assembly. Later, they otfered two groups ot' selections at the Spring Festi- val. The lNlassed Choral Festixal held at the Civic Auditorium, also found the group participating. The years .activities ended with the presentation of two exchange assemblies. The chorus this year was proud to be outhtted in new blue and white choral robes purchased by the P. T. A. At Christmas time these groups presented a beau- . , tiful Cantata, The Wondrous Story, as a part of the Christmas assembly. I 6 The choruses also sang in the Good Friday as- Q u sembly, and in the Easter Sunrise Service of the Wyoming Park U. B. church. Two groups of selections were given by the Club at our annual Spring Festival. The girls trio, chosen from the choruses, sang in assemblies, in P.T.A. meetings and in churches. Their outstanding service was the singing of Oh Holy Night at the city-wide carol sing held in the Civic Auditorium, Trio members were Connie Hart' man, Marcia Steketee and Lois Van Malsen. XY'ynsma. The Boys' Glee Club this year was composed of approximately twenty-two members. This group showed remarkably well-blended voices and abounding enthusiasm for the songs they learned. The boys sang for a Student assembly on March Zo. at which time Stouthearted Men, All Through the Night and El Rancho Grande were the numbers used. The latter number was especially enjoyed by the student body. The Boys' Glee Club was featured on the exchange assembly program held at Rockford and Grandville High schools. On this program and at our own Spring Festival held May 10th they presented several K I novelty numbers, Marching Along Together and El Rancho Grande with special effects worked out I A by Tom Drenten. Q ee u From the Boys' Glee Club was selected a trio com- posed ot Tom Drenten. Howard Slootmaker and Dale Vander XY all. The trio was active in assembly ap- pearances and presented a comedy number called Down by the Old Mill Stream at the exchange as- sembly program and at our Spring Festival program. The trio sang also several sacred numbers at the First United Brethren Church on Burton Heights and at our own Good Friday assembly. The Boys' Quintet, composed of Dale Vander Xwall. Tom Drenten. Howard Slootmaker, Gerald Formsma, and Ed W'ynsma, was organized late in the year but was able to prepare some lively Spirituals for use in our Spring Festival program. Meeting only once a week and without an accompanist they experienced difhculty in continuing rehearsals. However many of them are singing in other groups as well, and hope to have more chances later for participation in the musical activities of the high school. This group joined in with the big mixed chorus for singing in the com- munity Carol Sing in the school the night of Decem- her 19th. By their fine presentation of affirmative arguments on the question: RESOLVED THAT THE LEGAL VOTING AGE SHOULD BE REDUCED TO EIGHTEEN YEARS, in their first debate of the sea- son they defeated two out of two of their opponents in the contest at Hudsonville. They proved to be equally able in presenting the negative side when they defeated Belding in the con- test at Belding, thus winning the district plaque. On Fehruary 13. Wyoming Park entertained the four other schools entering the regional tournament. Our team was defeated in a close contest with Grand Rapids Union. Grand Rapids Union won the tourna- ment. Among the many projects and services rendered to the school hy the cluh was the repairing of bleachers and the decorations of goal posts at the home foot- hall games. The group also sponsored .1 soft drink and paddlepop stand at the annual community rounds up. The HifY participated in many activities, including parties at the Y.M.CA., a trip to the Hi-Y cottage at Newaygo, and many Hi-Y conferences. Wlien Eugene Morgan, president of the club, left for service with the Army Air Forces, Eugene Donel- son, vice-president, took over the supervision of the Hi-Y and proved to he as ahle .1 leader as his pre- decessor. The junior class presented this year, That Crazy Smith Family by Katherine Kavanaugh. It was .1 humorous play about that great institution -the American family. A football player, a pugilist, a drum majorette, and an artist all go to make up the crazy Smith family. Pa and Ma, although they do not think themselves so, are just as crazy as their children. Complications set in when several colleges want Tony on their teams. One college even goes so far as to send their most glamorous brunette to work on Tony. A great deal of humor Centers around Buddie, and around the Professor who seems to be too slow, physi- cally and mentally. Consequently he is always bumped around by the Smith family. Although the Vikings were able to place but one lonely mark in the win column during the 1944 football season, they proved powerful enough to hold every league opponent that they faced to less than a 14-point margin. The Wyom- ing eleven, consisting largely of underclassmen, finished the season with a record of one win and seven losses. The year's initial contest saw a strong Lowell eleven invade the Viking gridiron and overpower the local squad to administer them a 20-6 defeat. The following week Wyoming came back to out- race a powerful Kelloggsville team to a thrilling 12-7 finish. However. as far as wins were con- cerned, this was as far as the Sybil-borne gridders could go, for in their next game they were driven from the field with a 26-0 defeat at the hands of Zeeland Chix. In their next battle the Vikings were satisfied to hold a much stronger East Grand Rapids team to 13 points, all of which were scored in the second quarter. The following week Wyom- ing lost a close contest to Godwin's Wolverines, 13 to 6, as the game ended with the Vikings vainly attempting to push across the tying points from the Godwin goal line. The hard luck streak con- tinued into the next battle also as Grandville, traditional rival, edged out the Blue and White in a 7-6 thriller. After the Vikings had led the en- tire first half and outplayed the Bulldogs the entire game, Max Wisner, Grandville speedster, snatched a last half Viking pass and raced 75 yards for the winning touchdown. In the next game, Wyoming proved its strength by holding Rock- ford, the league's champions, to a 13-7 score, and in the season's final contest, a high-scoring Lee squad took a decisive 20-7 victory. The Vikings were honored at the close of the season by having three of their members placed on the Grand Valley All-Conference teams. Gerald Formsma, a junior, won the left end position on the first team, while Hank Levering was acclaimed second team fullback and Gene Nyenhuis was granted a second team guard position. Because of his stellar play and untiring drive, Hank Levering was voted by his team-mates to be the captain of the 1944 Wyoming eleven. Jgaafeefbaff With an impressive record of 10 victories and 6 losses, Wyoming ended its 1944-45 basketball season with a third-place rating in the Grand Val- ley Conference and then battled its way into the final round of the District Basketball Tournaments only to lose their final tilt to a strong Lee five, 37 tO 54. The Vikings jumped off to an impressive start in league competition as they netted victories in their first two games, defeating Godwin, 38 to 23, and Lowell, 40 to 29. The result of the next con- test was not as well received by Wyoming fans, however, as a classy Zeeland five took a decision in an inter-league game. The following week the Viking five received another set-back as a power- ful East squad handed them their first league de- feat of the season. In their next tilts, Wyoming took a one-sided -16-24 victory over Rockford but then faltered and bowed to Lee, 30 to 20. It was at this point, however, that the Vikings hit the peak of the season's play as they took four con- secutive victories, winning over Grandville, 38 to 24, Godwin, 29 to 273 Lowell, 50 to 38, and Rockford 48 to 46. This was as far as the Viking winning streak would carry them however, as in their next tilt East Grand Rapids won the Valley championship with a 31-24 victory over Wyoming, and in the following tilt Lee's Rebels clinched the league's runner-up spot with a 39-33 win over the Vikings. Perhaps the most thrilling game of the season was the last scheduled game in which Wyoming outraced Grandville to a narrow 50-49 victory. Wyoming won its first game at the District tournaments, defeating Grandville, 44-23. On the following night the Vikings edged out their tradi- tional rival, Holland Christian, 26-25, but in the tourney's windup affair Lee took the class C title with a 37-34 win over Wyoming.
