It was not a year in which Wyoming was top in league standings There were many who thought Wyoming was slipping and that the boys on the teams did not care If w1nn1ng every game in every sport IS the criteria Wyoming s teams certain ly were slipping There were good athletes on the teams this year in fact pro bably the best group that has come along in a long time and the seem lng paradox of abundant talent and mediocre teams mystlfied many Deo ple The only answer seemed to be that not all the players were l1v1ng up to their talent and that while many of the players were serious about their sports others were not serious enough to provide great teams for Wyoming This IS probably the situation but it is not deplorable Those who are serious ln their athletics will go far in the sports world and the others will still have enjoyed the thrill the fun and the excitement of the game The purpose of high school sports is not to make pro fessionals but to provide enjoy ment for the players and the spec tators In this sense Wyoming has just had a great year of sports l . . . . , . - I 0 . , . , - fy It A , .XP . At the change of semesters in February this year, he left us for the third time. Twice before, once in 1942 to enter the Navy, and again in 1946 to enter the selling field, our 'Jurk' has simi- larly left us. We all would welcome him back for a fourth time. Even without considering the teams, the scores, and the honors, Wyoming owes Mr. Jurkovic a great deal. For his tireless energies, his cheerful- ness, his kindnesses, and his un- derstanding, we all say Thanks!u To fill the coaching gap, an- other member of Miss McAffee's Greenhills Renegades, Mrg Walter Howard, came from the coaching staff of our northwesternly neigh- bors, If Wyoming does not quit its teacher-robberies we can expect to find Mr. Bush laid in his coffin at Catcher A1 Friend on the job in our first game with St. Francis Seminarv , W WWA' 'sv' ,3 ' wg V77 Pitcher Bob Gorman The box score looks like this: Lost to Lockland Won from St. Bernard Won from N.C.H. Great things can be expected from Mrq Howard when he takes over the hefty athletic teams. Under Jurk , the baseball team worked hard all season, and when the dust from the first base slide had settled, they found themselves on the fourth rung in the M.v.I.L. standings with a five win, five loss record. Their best game was a nine to five affair against St. Bernard, The best game played against them was by Deer Park, who allowed them no hits for a three to nothing score. Of the pitchers, Bob Gorman had the best record with three wins to one loss. Hugh Mc Uiarmid had a three win, three lpss record for the season. Then the days grew hot, we struggled through exams, said goodby to the class of '52, and looked forward to the fun-and-fancy-free life of summer. we were just beginning to enjoy the life of play when some of us were recalled back to the cares of the world by the day August 20, the begin- ning of football practice. It was a hot practice season and a tough one. That was 0.K., though, because ev- ery man on the team knew that hardship endured in practice would bring benefits in the game. Jurk said that he had a better bunch of boys to coach this year than he had had in many years. The Millcreek Val- ley News thought so too, and everyone looked to Wyoming to take the league. 1,1 ,,f .- 2' Wyoming came out of the N.V.I.L Preview with its face scarred from having fallen flat on it. The coaches' mock ings Of paper heroes and a hard week of practice Dro- duced a much more satisfactory score with Norwood. We then settled down to the routine of winning games by single points. This made for spectator excitement and for coaches' ulcers. During the week of the Greenhills game, an air of ex- citement and expectancy came over the high school. It was not Greenhills--it was Lock- land. Whether it was due to this preoccupied state of mind or not, the team failed to get that extra point. The game ended as it had started, all evened up: it neither confirm- ed nor denied anyone's own suspicions of the outcome of the game two weeks hence. 5 ,2 'YQ I R Dall Pennington takes out a Marie- mont player to stop a long run. Time went on, everyone grew more tense, and we were defeated by Wariemont. At the pep assembly the afternoon of the Lockland game, the spir- its were high, the cheers were noisy. The team, under the direction of Coach Lieberman, didn't have a good start, although in every match, at least one singles player or a doubles team won.
