ITH THE realization for the need of better medical care in rural areas, Dr. Thompson began in 1911 the formation of what is today one of the most modern and successful com- munity hospitals. Like a seed planted it grew from a private institution in this eminent surgeons home at the present site, to meet the specincations of a secondary medical center. By 1930 the need' for a permanent hospital was realized and it was taken over by the county as the first institution in the state to operate as a state aid hospital. In order to continue the desired staff set-up, a medical advisory board was established, the membersinominated by the county medical society and appointments made by the hospital board of managers. Only accredited-surgeons may do major .surgery here, all licensed physicians may attend medical and obstetrical cases, the specialist staff may not carry on a practice outside of the hospital, and they must limit theirhwork to their special fields. p The hospital is now owned by Wyoming County and is governed by a Board of Super- visors who appoints a superintendent to act as administrative officer, under whom are the following departments and their respective heads, School of Nursing, Housekeeping, Laundry, Dietetics, Maintenance and Office. It is fully approved by the American College of Surgeons, the American Hospital Association, the New York State Medical Association, the New York State Department of Health and the New York State Department of Social Welfare. The School of Nursing is accredited by the New York Department of Education and graduates completing the three-year prescribed course are eligible to take the New York State licensing examination for registered Professional Nurses.
