CLASS HISTORY by Ann McKenzie We, the Graduating Class of 1959, look back to September 1949, when we began our twelve years of academic education at Wyoming Centralf School. The first eight years.seemed to pass rather rapidly and in September of 1955 we found ourselves suddenly entering our first year in high school, with twenty-three members in the class. At our first Freshman Class meeting we chose for our advisors, Miss O'Brien and Mr. Bell. For our officers we elected Wesley Spring, President, Harold Alexander, Vice President, Sherlyn Stothers, Sec- retary, and Janet Perkins, Treasurer. During that year we were happy to have Robert Darrow from Caledonial join us for the rest of our high school years. We took part in several projects during the year, namely, a fish supper, a baked food sale, and the sale of stationery. These money-making ven- tures proved highly successful. Each class member worked with great enthusiasm and cooperation. The following year we entered as full-fledged Sophomores. At our first business meeting of the year, we were compelled to chose another advisor since Mr. Bell left at the end of our Freshman year. Mr. Thompson was chosen as our sponsor to act along with Miss O'Brien. The class officers for the year were Sherlyn Stothers, President, Harold Alexander, Vice President, Richard Cook, Secretary, and Janet Wilcox, Treasurer. We sponsored a fish fry and sold Christmas corsages, both projects netting a good profit. During our second year we took part in many extra-curricular activities, such as band, chorus, athletics and student council--as we did in our other three years of high school. In September, 1957, we became the Junior Class, with many plans for the year. We elected Mr. Ruger as an additional sponsor to help Miss O'Brien and Mr. Thompson, our sponsors from preceed- ing years. Our Junior officers were Richard Cook, President, Harold Alexander, Vice President, Sherlyn Stothers, Secretary, and Janet Wilcox, Treasurer. Two girls from other schools joined us at the beginning of the year, Betty Lou Carlzen came to us from Buffalo and Ann Davis from Mobile, Alabama. During the year several high honors were bestowed upon members of the class. Lee Ham- mond was selected to attend Boy's State, which is sponsored by the American Legion of Warsaw. Jean Wilson a very talented French horn player, auditioned for and made the All-State band. Four members of the class, Betty Lou Carlzen, Sherlyn Stothers, Jean Wilson and Lee Hammond, due to their excellent scholastic grades, made the National Honor Society. Our class activities for the year were exciting, with profits going toward the cost of the Junior-Senior Banquet and for the benefit of the Seniors. We sponsored two fish fries, a baked food sale, and the Junior Follies of 1958, our va- riety show, which was a very definite success. The Junior-Senior Banquet, our highlight of the year was held at the Hare Homestead, near Letchworth Park. Mrs. Smallwood was guest speaker. At the end of the year, our class, which numbered twenty-five members, dwindled to twenty when Betty Lou Carlzen, Ann Davis, Marilyn Rowley, Lowell Adams, and Peter Zinkievich left. Finally, the long-awaited event of our whole high school career arrived-the day when we became the Senior Class. We began our year with the election of our class officers. Richard Cook was elected as President, Harold Alexander, Vice President, Sherlyn Stothers, Secretary, and Ann McKenzie, Treasurer. Our class has participated in many projects during the year for the purpose of earning money for our greatly anticipated Senior trip to Washington. In the earlier part of the year we sold magazines and sponsored a chicken barbecue. On December 11 we performed our Senior play, The Able Miss Cain, which was directed by Mrs. Hammond. This spring we had a ham supper and a couple of baked food sales. We received several high honors this year. Again Jean Wilson was selected to play in the All-State Band. She also represented Wyoming Central in Albany as guest of the Honorable Harold Peet. Three Seniors made the National Honor Society for the second year-- they were Sherlyn Stothers, Jean Wilson, and Lee Hammond. In April, the Senior scholastic aver- ages were determined. Sherlyn Stothers was named Valedictorian and Jean Wilson, Salutatorian. Yours truly received third place honor. Now, we are looking forward to our Junior-Senior Banquet, the Senior Prom, graduation, and our June trip to Washington, D. C. As we, the Graduating Class of 1959, gaze back at the past twelve years, our stay at Wyoming Central seems short. However, the fun and happiness we have had in school will not be forgotten but will forever remain in our memories. We therefore bid farewell to our Alma Mater. We wish the Senior Class of next year the very best of luck! 14
