Clifft, our former teacher, coach, and loyal friend, the Annual Staff humbly dedi cates this '58 STINGER. Throughout his stay of seven years in Wynne High School, Coach won the admiration and respect of all who knew him. His philosophy, one which has been cultivated since he entered the teaching profession in 1925, can best be summed up in the poem, It's All in the State of Mind . If you think you're beaten -- you are; You've got to think high to rise; If you think you'd like to win -- but you can’t, It's almost a cinch -- you won't; If you think you’ll lose -- you've lost, For out in the world you'll find Success begins with a fellow's will — It's all in the state of mind. MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL It has been a great pleasure to work with the students this year. I know that we can expect the same enthusiasm next year. Mr. Austin W. Glenn Principal MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT A most pleasant school year has been made possible for me because of the splendid way the Senior class and the student body, as a whole, have assumed their responsibilities. I trust each member of the Graduating class will make a contribution to society com- mensurate with his abilities and talents. We are looking forward to seeing those who do not graduate return with a determination to surpass the great record made by the 1958 Seniors. Secretary to the Superintendent Mrs. John Tarbutton MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL BOARD The members of the Wynne School Board, have worked together with one thought in mind: to do everything we possibly can for the advancement of the students of Wynne Schools. We are grateful for the teachers who have given you instructions and wise counsel. These individuals are truly your friends and throughout the years of time will watch your progress. The members of Wynne School Board are proud of you. We pray for a happy pro- sperous life for each of you. Co -Captain Jimmy Davis Co -Captain Bear” Cox Yellowjackels Win Their Opening Game The Wynne High School Yel- lowjackets opened their 1957 rea- son last Thursday night with a 19-7 victory over Frayser High School of Memphis, B team. In the first quarter, neither team made much progress. The deepest penetration was by Yel- lowjacket Back Jimmy Cox, who went around end to the 16-yard- line, with a 10-yard gain. The threat was nullified by the strong Frayser Ram defense. The first «score of the game came late in the second quarter when Wynne Co-Captain Jimmy Davis threw a 15-yard pass to End Bobby Hunter, who ran ap add- itional 20 yards to score. Tackle Tony Hess kicked the extra point and the ’Jackets were ahead, 7-0. Early in the third quarter, Wynne climaxed a 60-yard ground drive when Ronnie Ellis carried it over from the one-yard line. Tony Hess’ kick was wide. Frayser’s score came midway of the fourth quarter wl en Guard Tommy Roark intercepted a pass on the 20 and went over. Half- back Herman Pittman ran for the point. The final score of the game was by James Littlejohn of, Wynne, who set up the score with a five- yard gain to the 19-yard-line and went the rest of the way on the next play. Tony Hess’ kick was blocked. The Yellowjackets Stops the Tigers Again. Pag© 73 Field House, Littlejohn Stopped by Helena The Wynne Yellow jack- ets overcame a two-touch- down lead Friday night to win over the Helena Indi- ans, 27 to 14. The Indians went to work early in the first quarter when James Frazier, Chester Jones and com- pany kept possession after the opening kickoff, racked up four first-downs and finally Jones scored and Frazier added the point. The next Indian scoring drive came after Helena recovered a fumble on the Wynne 32, took advantag of two successive oen- alties on Wynne, tried a passing attack and finally Frazier oassed to Jones on the 10 and Jones went the rest of the way. Frazier’s kick was good. The Yellowjacr.ets settled down in the second quarter and held the Indians scoreless, taking over on downs twice. With about two minutes left in the quarter, Ron- nie Ellis recovered a fumble on Wynne’s own 30-yard-line .and scampered 70 yards to score. Tony Hess kicked the point. In the waning seconds of the first half, Ellis made two long ground gains to the Helena 35, and Jimmy Davis passed to Bob- by Hunter for the long pass-play that paid off. Tony Hess’ kick was wide. In the third quarter, Ellis got loose again on the Helena 40 and crossed the goal line, but the score was nullified by a penalty. The ’Jacket defense held tight, and the quarter was scoreless. In the final quarter, Ellis, Cox and Davis of Wynne battered their way from midfield to the Helena two-yard line and Cox carried it over. Hess added the Hunter Goes Over for Touch Down. The Wynne Yellowjackets climaxed the 50th Anniver- sary Homecoming celebra- tion last Friday by winning over the McCrory Jaguars 26-0. The Yellowjackets opened the scoring in the first quarter when C. P. Dail made a 21-yard gain to the Jaguar 9-yard-line. Then Dail carried it to the six, Ronnie took it to the one and Jimmy Cox went over on a quarterback sneak. Tony Hess’ kick was blocked. In the same quarter, Jimmy Davis took a punt on his own 30 and ran it back to the McCrory 35, and a series of steady gains took it to the one-yard line again. Jimmy Cox fumbled on the 5 and McCrory recovered, birt the Jag- uars were offside o the play and Wynne retained possession. Ron- nie Ellis then went over. Hess’ kick missed by a small margin. The second quarter was score- less, although Ellis went over and the play was nullified by an off- side penalty on Wynne. The Mc- Crory defense stiffened, and the half ended with the ‘Jackets still dn the 4-yard-line. Wynne scored in the third quarter after getting the ball oh downs on the 36-yard line. Then Ronnie Ellis got loose behind beautiful interference and scam- pered the erttire remaining 64 yards. Hess’ kick was good. In the final quarter, Jimmy Cox and Bobby Hunter Opened a scoring drive with a 20-yard pass play to the McCroty 25. Ellis. Dail and Cox worked the ball down to the four and Dail took it over. Hess’s first kick was wide, but an offside penalty on Mc- Crory gave him another chance and the kick was good. Most of the Yellowjacket re- serves saw action during the fin- al period. To Mr. Glenn, Mr. Cox, we bequeath a share in the St. Joseph Aspirin Co., to guarantee a bountiful supply of remedies for headaches and ulcers. To the faculty, we will our vast amount of knowledge and wisdom to help them solve the problems and headaches we gave them. To the entire Student Body, we leave all the incorrect clocks, a bell system which is always out of order, initialled desks, forged absentee slips, time-tested lectures from the office, and fond memories of the Unforget- table SENIOR CLASS of 1958. And we gladly leave Mr. Baugus, hereby stating his name so he can't protest the will. Page 120 New what?
