DEDICATION To Mr. Vernon James—who. in his one year at Wynne High School, because of his kindness and understanding won the admiration and friendship of every student and teacher—we, the Annual Staff, lovingly dedicate this, the 1954-55 edition of The Stinger, to express our heart- filled thanks for his making Wynne High a better and more outstanding school. The Lasting Quality of Love The comrade that once marched with me Or dared adventure keen, My spirit's comrad still shall be Though silence intervene. The friend with whom I once have shared Some banquet of the soul Can never from my heart be spared Though seasons between us roll. This lasting quality of love A part I take to be Of that safe treasure laid above And--immortality. In memory of Miss Lona Crouch, Lynda Aston, Jessie Wayne Bradley, and Marshall Bledsoe. Come and jOln In song together, Shout with might and main. Our beloved Alma Mater Sounds her praise again! Here's o her whose name We'll e er cherish in our song. Honor, ove, and true devotion All to her belong. Chorus: Gloriana! Praise her banner. E'er to her be true. She's the pride of Arkansas, Hall to old Wynne High! 1955 ANNUAL STAFF Sponsor: Mrs. Edythe Lane Assistant Editor: Patricia Burnett Business Manager: Louise Davis Members: Nickie Hultsman; Martha Womack; Ivolene Stepp; Loretta Durborow; James Elam; Connie Bridges; Roy Marshall; Charlie McElroy. Citizenship Award Boy I Dare You Girl MARY HOLT JIMMIE MEBANE English Award History Award SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Way back in September of 1943, we, the prospective Seniors of 1955, began our school career under the patient guidance of Miss Cox and Mrs. Hall. Constituting our happy group were the following mem- bers: Clyde Allen, Annette Baddour, James Billings, Wayne Bridges, George Caster, H.D. Chambers, Orville Crowell, Mary Katherine Williams, Thomas Fields, Mary Ford, Jimmy Hodges, Buddy Jones, Delores Thomas, Clinton Brewster, Harvey McDaniel, Shirley McGaughey, Jimmy Mebane, Esther Mason, and Walter Watts. My, but we were sophisticated our first year! Many of our class participated in the Cinderella operetta presented by the second and third grades. That stage debut will never be for- gotten. Having survived the first crucial year, our group proceeded to the second grade where we came under the care of Miss Jackson and Mr. Lyles. This year the students who made 100 on their grades were per- mitted to form a train and march around the school building or down to the street making choo-choo noises. Of couRe, this train was of great length! In the third grade, we were taught by Mr. Kellogg and Miss Porter. Peggy Barnett from Rofe joined our group, Walter Watts returned from Madison, and Esther Mason from Mebane. This year the boys really got to be boys--chasing the girls and fighting during the noon hour. Coming through our third year with no fatalities we progressed to our fourth year in which we studied under Miss Elaine Smith and Mr. Hamilton. Our group was brightened by the entrance of Jack Harper from Vanndale and Lois Gilmer from Parkin. That year was highlighted by the group singings in Mr. Hamilton's room and the hopscotch craze. In the fifth grade with Miss Harper and Miss Lytle the girls played paper dolls and wore jeans to school everyday. The whole gang was softball mad. John Spain and Ernest McElroy from Rofe, Richard McAvoy from Helena, Lillian Walker from Weiner, and Pat Harvey joined our group. As we progressed to the sixth grade we were really beginning to feel grown-up. Our teachers were Miss Watkins and Miss Combs. Franklin Pittman entered our class from New Hope. Our fiRt year in Junior High School brought a flood of new faces: Dallas Maples from Mebane, Pat Burnett and Helen Wilkins from McElroy, Carol and Dan Owens and Jackie Williams from Hamlin, Bettye Brawner from California, Retha Seaton and Louise Davis from Cherry Valley, Oran and Dale Young and Barbara Bradley from Fair Oaks. Herbert Hall from New Hope, and Mary Holt from Gailey. Walter Watts from Vanndale rejoined our group as did Lillian Walker. Our teacheR during this crucial period were Kir. Midkiff. Miss Jordan, Mr. Smith and Miss Huffman. We began our eighth grade year in a brand new school building. Our homeroom teachers were Mr. Scott and Miss Jordan. The following bright and smiling faces joined us: Ida Mae Witcher from Judsonia, Ethel Glover from Fitzgerald Crossing, J.R. Die bold from Searcy, Fillmore Hall from New Hope, and Mary Lou McCrary from Mebane. And who could forget our Freshman year! Every week we were being initiated into something. FiRt. was the torture dealt to us by the SenioR for being Green Freshmen; next, the girls were pledging for the Junior Progressive Club and F.H. A.: and the boys all had green hands from pledging for the F.F.A. This year we were the charges of Mr. Hamilton. Miss Royal, and Mr. Williams. Our roll took a big increase with Troy Jones from Mebane, Mary Courtney from Hickory Ridge, and Charles Ellis School yielded to us Raymond Merrell, Edward and Erne Mae Reed, Silas and Genevieve Acuff, and Frances Ellis. Jitnmy Grantham returned from Parkin after a year's absence and Edward Willis returned after two yeaR absence. As Sophomores we assumed the traditional responsibility of having the White Christmas program. Richard McAvoy portrayed Santa Claus. Our sponsors were Miss Maddox and Mr. Wimberly. Bobby Peevv entered our class from Forrest City. Under the sponsorship of Miss Martin and Mr. Baugus, we were launched in the activities of our Junior year. We became interested in the school paper, the Halloween Carnival, our class play, Hillbilly Wedding. and our prom, far which the theme was a circus. Emma Sharpe from Harrisburg and Freda Davis from Hickory Ridge joined our bunch. We were launched as SenioR with Mr. Dillport and Mr. Saugus as our sponsoR. Jackie Crawley from Ripley, Tennessee, Ernest Upshaw from Billings. Missouri, and Connie 5ass Bridges from Vanndale were added to our group. Also, La verne Boyce, Roobie Harrell, and Rebecca Moultrie were welcome mem- beR. Our Senior play Little Miss Somebody was a great success as also was our Senior trip to Eureka Springs. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Six years after graduation Dr. Ogilvy D. Owens and me, Galdine P. Harvey, finished our space ship. The Wynnefire, which was to go to the friendly planet, Satum. When the day of take-off arrived, my crew. Ranger Kartr Billings, Sergeant Mirion Allen, Control girl, Arth Ford, Cook, Star McGaughey, and Patrol Woman, Fych Gilmer, set our course for Saturn. After two days in the air and going only seven miles from Earth, our machinist, Latimir Acuff finally discovered the emergency brake was still on. Ten days later we were at the Moon, our first stop. Carefully we peeped over the first beacon to find Junior Diebold, Fire Fields, Quarterback Caster, and Razor Sharpe playing football in their new space suits. We needed fuel badly, so we roamed on down into a deep cave trying to find some sort of fuel station. Finally we came upon the sign, Fuel Center of the Skys, and to our surprise it was owned by the gone couple Zacathan Glover and Roth McAvoy. So I sent our errand boy Zor Grantham for the Wynnefire. When we were refueled, we continued our journey to Saturn stopping next at Venus, the land of beautiful women. There we saw such beauties as, Esther Zicti Mason, Mary Jakan Holt, Freda Zora Davis, and Terra M. Courtney all in the palace of the Imperial Majesty, Jimmy Mebane. For our enter- tainment at the palace His Majesty presented the great fighters, Demon McDaniels and Barbarian Up- shaw using super-ray beam guns. All too soon we left the land of beautiful women to go on to Jupiter, which was a very dangerous planet. We were met at Central City Space Part by Bobby Guan Peevy and his wife Frances Dalgre Ellis telling us to make our exit quickly because a desperate ray woman was on the loose. After Fuelman Orgil Crowell filled our thirsty ship and Taleng Harper washed our glass, we left the dangerous Jupiter not knowing that the desperate raywoman had slipped the Wynnefire. No sooner had we left Jupiter when Zinga Baddour and her dreaded ray guns made known their unwanted presence on the ship. She was trying to make us space on to Mars instead of Saturn; but when we explained that we had to stop for fuel, she consented. When we reached the fuel center at Saturn, I told the patrolman, Arctuirus B. Jones about Zinga and he sent for his daymen, Wulf Chambers, Cummi Bridges, and Faltharian Maples to capture the woman. Before the Rangers reached the spaceport, we were forced by Zinga, who had collected two other dangerour friends, Betty Smitt Brawner and Bemmy G. Accuff to leave immediately. Finally we landed on the unexplored Mars and immediately were taken prisoners by Martians, Peggy Xytri Barnett and Louise Ionatle Davis who took us into the Spirit of the Spring Rain Cave, and turned us over to three robots that looked just like Patricia Creturus Burnett, Connie Scus Bridges and Barbara Cyn Bradley. Zinga and her friends went with Captain Cerenty Jacobs Boyce and Commander Krgent Hall to see the prince of the Wars, Horsermander Thomas to make a deal. In the dungeon we found Mary Space- girl McCrary, Ernie Quickee Reed, and Helen cc Willins on the floor. After talking with them we learned that in the other dungeons Ernest Fly Boy McElroy, Jimmy Vibor Hodges, Troy Snyn Jones, and Galacter Hall were suffering the same as they were. About the time we were given up for lost, a great noise rang in the Tower and before we say a word in burst Captain Carol Flash Owens and His mighty space fighters, Raymond Guandora Merrell, John Zoravein Spain, Franklin Steina Pittman and Edward Speedo Reed with their super rocket ray guns to make a brave rescue. A few hours later we were all safely on the Wynnefire not knowing we were to witness the greatest war between rocket ships ever fought in the air. Suddenly we heard a loud noise very close to our ship. We looked out the window to see Flash Owens and Zinga Baddour having a battle in their spaceships. Just as Flash was about to be beaten Captain Video Wans and his Marsdale Patrolman, Jackie Ming Will- iams, Edward Taproot Willis, Oran Zarcarf Young came to the much needed aid of Flash and Zinga was taken prisoner once again. We reached Saturn after a quick trip to refuel our Wynnefire before going to Earth and picking up our friends, Retail See All Glover and Bessie Bing Witcher and Robbie Harrell, what we had originally made the trip for. While we were waiting for our friends in the space room we saw Lillian Kaya Walker, Ida Mingcapera Witcher and Mary Jet Williams having a big conversation. We joined them and to our sur- prise Rebacca Rocket Moultrie had finally made up her mind between Clinton Carth Brewster and Dail Younga. About that time our ship was refueled and our friends had arrived, so we left the peaceful planet, Satum, to space on home to Earth.
