Behind the scenes, they keep Groves alive Did you ever stop to think who cleared your forgotten lunch off the cafeteria table, or who stayed after the basket- ball garne to rnop the floor? Groves' maintenance crew, headed by Chuck Loucks, worked hard all day and into the night this past year to keep Groves alive. Not only was this crew Groves' lawn service, but they were also its plurnbers and repairrnen. Some of their jobs were raising the flag, cutting the lavvn, keeping our field in top condition for football garnes, and shovel- ing sidewalks in the winter. The crew did get sorne rest, but not rnuch, because it took a lot of energy and effort to keep Groves alive. LEFT: Tirn Srnolar pauses while sweeping the floor in the cafeteria. Secretaries carne to school each day this year only to find an- other pile of work had found its way to their desks. The secretaries were an es- sential part of our lives at Groves. Each day lvlary Burg had to listen to new excuses as to why a stu- dent should be excused from his truancy. In the counselling office, Gladys Foxley was constantly M' bothered with counselor appoint- n'1ents and schedules. Groves' bookkeeper, Delores Sheppard, kept accounts for all clubs and organizations. She also collected the fines for all the books we lost. Each day, while students as- sisted in the office, secretaries took their well-deserved break. By the end of the day, piles of work had vanished and secretaries were able to go HOFTWE and look forward to tornorrow. Do secretaries have more fun? ABOVE EIGHT: Gladys Foxley looks up frorn her work to greet a student. FIIGI-lT: Florence Clhanesian stops her typing to answer the constant phone. BELOW: lvlary Burg explains to a student that a shopping spree is not an excuse for a truancy. 5? EB Secretaries

Groves' High School was a great natural resource of learning. Students met changes with challenge, accepting and experiencing the new and untried. Each skill was developed under the trained guidance of every specialized teacher. From government, journalism to precal., Shakespeare and modern European history, students had nothing to lose if they took the plunge into the extensive range of academics available. ln the schools of this time, one had the choice to determine one's own future. With this in mind, the stu- dents who wished it, thus benefitted from the fine gift of education at Wylie E. Groves, and emerged as young adults ready to meet the world head on. sr- M N, ff- 'hw K s 3 2 4 Q Q 5 at fs sf la .few 5 si 1 Q 5 2' figs' 92 ss 30
