In 1937 .... . . . . students passed through the doors of Wyandotte High School for the first time. We remember 1937 for the birth of this building at its present site, 25th and Minnesota, as a result of the complete destruction by fire of the old building at 9th and Minnesota. The present structure, costing approxi- mately two and one-half million dollars, and its distinctive campus covers an area of 22 acres. It is one of the largest schools in the Middle West. Taking almost two years in construction, the new school can accommodate 3,000 students and a fac- ulty of 90. There are 85 classrooms, including twin cafeterias. The gym seats 1,900, while the auditorium, one of the best in the United States, seats 1,800. Our library contains 18,000 volumes. We can also be proud of Wyandotte's exterior appearance, with its stately twin towers, These tow- ers, which can be seen from far and near, truly symbolize Wyandotte. The landscaping is one of thoughtful planning, thus giving us one of the most beautiful high school campuses to be found any- where. We are proud of Wyandotte's achievements in education, leadership, and sportsmanship these past twenty-five years. Wyandotte at its best, displays its grandeur to all, not just a building but a friend. 1, , , M. .4 5 . v f ,, rr 5 1 T' 2... . xv. 5 p it , , - 4'1:1 : , GLADYS ELLIS ANNIE R. There are two phases of this program: The Summer Program and the School Program. Summer students live with host families through July and August while school progrfm students live there and attend school for either one term or a full year. These students are selected on a national basis. Wyandotte now has four semi-finalists, Peggy Englebrake, Roy Holliday, Bette Kella, and Gene Locke, who are competing for placement in the summer exchange program. Agatha Tan, our - exchange student from by Gale Wright A Mr. Gunther Paj ek Singapore, stayed at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R.V., DeNota throughout the school year. Coach Ed Ellis started his 23rd year as head coat-li hy saying that Wyandotte was in a rebuilding year and that uc were weak in many spots. For a team that was supposedly ielunlding, Wyandotte certainly had a fine season. The Bulldogs played their first game of the season on the rain-soaked field of the Chanute Comets. Wyandotte handed the Comets -1 13-7 defeat: however, at the opening moments of the game it looked as ii Wyandotte had picked the wrong night to play foothall. Chanute reeled off 40 yards for a T. D., but Bill I-'enton rallied the Bulldogs as he passed to Ron Blowers in the cnd zone: this evened the score at7-7. After halftime, Jerry Bortka scooted 45 yards to put the Bulldogs ahead and this was all Wyandotte needed, for the Bulldogs tucked the 13-7 win under their helts and headed for home. The Wildcats invaded the Bulldog field and again it looked li.ke an off night for the Bulldogs as the Wildcats led I3-O early in the second quarter. Again Fenton was the Bulldog who led Wyandotte on the road to victory as he scampered into the end zone for the Bulldogs' first T. D. of the night. Eddie Ellis, Wyandotte's kicking specialist, then booted the extra point and the score stood at 13-7 with Wyandotte trailing. Again Fenton, the Bulldogs' magician, led a 58-yard T. D. which deadlocked the score at 13-13. This was how the score was to remain throughout the remainder of the game. Wyandotte then met the Topeka West Chargers and it was Fenton's pass to Ron Blowers that put the Bulldogs ahead, by a score of 7-0. During the second and third quarter, Wyandotte was unable to move the ball because of the defensive unit of the Chargers. Topeka then scored and the game was even at 7-7. But the Bulldogs were not satisfied, Fenton hit Rogers witha pass and he proceeded to the 5-yard line where he was brought clown. Fenton then made a 5 yard run to put the Bulldogs aheadg the score standing at 14-7. Bob Clark did a finejob of replacing Jerry Bortka, who had been injured earlier in the game. Wyandotte, with a 2-0-1 record, then met the S. M. North Indians on Wyandotte's field. During the first quarter both teams' defensive units held and the quarter was scoreless. Then in the second quarter, Fenton connected with Bob Clark for a 30-yard touchdown pass, In the third quarter Carl Jackson scored from the l-yard line to give the Bulldogs a 13-0 advantage as Ellis kicked the extra point. With time running out in the third quarter and faced with a third down-and-20 situation, Fenton felt no pres- sure as he heaved a 55-yard touchdown pass to Mike Rogers which made the score 19-0. S. M. North managed only one touch- down, thus Wyandotte won their third game of the season by the score of 19-7. For the fifth game of the season the Bulldogs met the S. M. West Vikings. A fumble by the Vikings set up the Bulldogs' first T. D. as Wyatt Breidenthal plunged in and El1is's conversion gave Wyandotte a 7-0 advantage. In the second quarter Fenton passed to Blowers for a 28-yard T. D. and Ellis again booted the extra point. Fenton scored another touchdown on a 2-yard plunge and along with Ellis' conversion, the score stood at 21-0. The Vikings scored their first T. D. of the night in the fourth quarter, however Wyandotte counteracted this with a Fenton- to-Jackson pass. Eddie Ellis had a perfect night as he kicked 4 extra points. The final score stood at 28-6, in favor of the Wyandotte Bulldogs. Then Wyandotte traveled to Topeka, where they tromped the Trojans by a score of 20-Ill. The Bulldogs scored carlv in the game, when John Savika stole tht-ball fromthe Topekzin hall 4-arrier and carried it to the Topeka 1-I-yard line, then Fenton passed to Rogers for u T. D. The conversion was good and Wyandotte led 7-0. For the second touchdown of the game, Fenton passed to Blowers and the Bulldogs led 14-0 as Ellis added the extra point. Finally Topeka scored a T.D. but the Bulldogs bounced hack as Fenton advanced the ball to the end zone and the score was 20-6. The Trojans were able to score another touchdown in the fourth quarter, but this did not enable them to overcome Wyandotte's lead and the Bulldogs went on to win for their fifth victory ofthe season. The next event on the schedule was the annual clash between Ward and Wyandotte. Bill Fenton scored three touchdoums for Wyandotte while Ward managed only two. At the completion of the game Wyandotte was ahead hy a 20-13 advantage. The victory gave Wyandotte a 26 to 5 edge in the traditional series between the two schools. Wyandotte encountered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Lawrence Lions. The Bulldogs remained in the game until the fourth quarter when a few costly interceptions changed the tide as the Bulldogs lost 34-13. The outstanding ground offense of the Lions made the real difference: however, looking on the bright side of things, Bill Fenton connected nine times for a total of 146 yards, two of these passes were for touchdowns. Wyandotte finished the 1962 grid season with an impressive 7-1-1 record as the Bulldogs swept past the S.liI.E. Lancers for their last victory of the season. This victory enabled Wyandotte to annex the Sunflower League Championship: this is the fifth championship that Wyandotte has captured in the last six years. Roy Holliday scored Wyandotte's first T.D., but East retaliated with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Fenton scored Wyandotte's second touchdown and the Bulldogs held a 14-13 advantage. The Bulldogs' final counter came in the fourth quarter as Fenton nailed Holliday for a B-yard T.D. Eddie Ellis also set a new Wyandotte record, as he made 17 extra points during the season. He also led the area in extra points. At this time the Quiverian would like to commend the coaches for a job well done. Our congratulations to Head Coach Ed Ellis, Assistant Coaches, Charles Sheffield, Charles Vining, Clyde Strimple, Gene Meier, and Dave Kendall. Also, we would like to commend Coach Ed Ellis: he was selected Coach of the Year. CONGRATULATIONS! Several Bulldogs received positions on honorary teams. For 25 years I have witnessed the laughter and the tears, the delights and the afflictions of thousands of carefree students. Today marks the end of another eventful year and the departure of another senior class. As Iglance over my gathering groups of friends, I notice a special exhilaration this morning, ranging from the sobs of the sentimentalists to the whoops and hurrahs of the eager ones. In one corner I hear a group of boisterous young senior men, exulting at the thought that school is finally over. Among this group Ifind the athletes, the scholars and the fun-seekers-- all outwardly happy at the thought of leaving, yet I can't help thinking that inwardly there is a relentless pang at the finality of high school days and the looming thought of what lies ahead. There stand some future doctors, teachers, military men, mechanics and possibly somepol iticians. Today they are still my boys, boys who have lasted through three fun-filled years at Big Red. Tomorrow they belong to the world. In another corner I hear a few sobs and see a few tears. Here are some of my girls - the reluctant sentimentalists who feel that the end is here ! The friendships they have estab- lished, the good times they have had, will all end today as the doors close on three glorious years. And while the boys may outwardly laugh at the girls' expressed emotions, inside they do understand. The scene is no different today than any other year. The electrifying intensity of the last day is the same year after year. And as Ijoin in their tears, I realize the reason for this special exhilaration--the memory of past days that really are Wyandotte. Along with them I recall the exciting football season and remember their exuberance with the capturing of another Sunflower crown. I rejoiced at the basketball thrills, and the ripple of excitement is still with me as I remember the 8 A.M. cheers ofgame days. My walls still feel adhesive from the myriads of posters heralding the coming plays, parties and elections. I recall the humming voices at the rumors of who got Homecoming and Spring Queen honors and the vibrant whispers awaiting the results of class elections. - Of course, these last few weeks have been filled with thoughts of Senior Proms and Breakfasts, but that isn't all that I recall. The anxieties and rewards of education do not lie in dances and athletics alone. They are also quite prevelant in the classroom where, in spite of the students' reluctance, learning did go on. I remember disappointments at poor geometry grades and joyousness at passing chemistry. No, the memories aren't any different than they were when my walls welcomed my first group in 1937. But to each senior class its memories are special. And as similar as they may be, each group has a special meaning to me. Now my halls are emptying for another year. There go my seniors on their different ways, but as they leave I dimly notice another group--the ones I've been priming for next year's responsibilities. They are especially happy for the halls are now theirs. And what of those giggly sophomores ?Abruptly their giggles have subsided into soft laugh- ter and they suddenly do not seem so silly. After all, they are now upperclassmen. My halls are now vacant and my lights are dimmed on another gratifying year. The mul- titudes of sobbing and laughing students have filtered out and I now sadly gaze upon the last reluctant couple walking down the hall. The boy glances back quickly and the girl wipes away a speck that seemingly got into her eye. A glance-- a sigh---and then, good-bye.
