74446466 The year 195 8 marked the 40th season of football at Wyandotte. We are proud that the Bulldogs again are the Sunflower League Cham- pions. The man who really made our football team click is Coach Ed Ellis, assisted by Coaches Dave Kendall. Ray Cox, and Charles Sheffield. The tricaptains were jim Gill, Paul Hester, and Gary McNerney. The starting lineup consisted of ends Dave Kerr and Bud Johnson, tackles Gary McNerney and Mike Beach, guards Ron Marsh and Paul Hester, center Warren Wesselg quarterback Jim Gill, halfbacks Don Beal and Bonnie Rambo, and fullback Nolen Ellison. In Wyandotte's traditional opener with the Central Blue Eagles, Elli- son showed promise for being one of the greats of the season. His pass to Beal set up a series of plunges for the T. D., with Ellison carrying it over. Wyandotte put up a great fight but finished on the short end of a 6-7 decision. Undaunted by their opening loss, Wyandotte gridsters whipped the Washington Wildcats 20-13 in the second game. Wyandotte held the score in their laps 20-0 until the fourth quarter when the Cats racked up two T. D.'s. A great showing was made by Thiry, Gill, and Beal. In the game with Leavenworth, Wyandotte came from behind 7-0 to buffalo the Pioneers Z6-7. Along with the spectacular scoring of Gill, Beal, and Ross, Ellison, Thiry, and Vaughn were vital to the Bull- dogs' victory in passing, running, and tackling. This was the nineteenth consecutive year the Bulldogs have defeated the Pioneers. A draw game with Shawnee Mission North Indians was the scene of Wyandotte's annual Homecoming. The Bulldogs showed their prowess as an outstanding defensive team by holding the Indians to a scoreless tie. Beach, Thiry, Ellison, and Kline all contributed to the defensive attack. The Ellismen massacred Argentine's Mustangs with an impressive By Carolyn Pickel and Sarah Gail Lynn 46-0 tally. T. D.'s were made by Rambo 01, Ellison QZJ, Marquis, and Hay. In 40 contests with the Mustangs the Canines have downed them 30 times. Traveling to Topeka, the gridsters tromped the Trojans 20-0. Stand- out work was done by Gill, Richardson, Hester, Marsh, McNerney, Beal, and Ellison. For the first time in fifteen years Ward's Cyclones edged the Bull- dogs, scoring 19 points to Wyandotte's 7. The Bulldogs marred Ward's hopes for a shut-out when Kline came through with a 72-yard drive to spark the T. D. The Cyclone plays were master-minded by quarterback Ron Cornish. In their game with Lawrence the gridsters bowed to the top-rated team of the state 0-18. Hester was the main source of trouble for the Lions, making twenty-one stops, including clutch tackles from behind. Ellison, Meggs, and McNerney also were outstanding defensively. For the fifth win of the year, the Canines defeated the Shawnee Mission East Lancers 12-0, earning the title of Sunflower League Champs. The initial T. D. was made when Ellison passed to Beal in a 71-yard drive. Ellison then intercepted an East pass to score the other T. D. All the linemen played a good game as the Bulldogs ended the season with an impressive slate. Next year's tricaptains will be Don Beal, Ron Marsh, and Gerald Hay. Congratulations! Gary McNerney was chosen for the all-state team, and Paul Hester received honorable mention. A balloting of the area coaches selected McNerney, Hester, Ellison, and Marsh for the all-city team. Beal and Ross made the second all-city teams.
