When Penny Palmer, a movie star, comes to town, his only goal in life at that moment is to attend the dance. So, with the help of neighbor Polly's finances, Dad's tux, the family limousine, and little sister's mask, he attends the ball. The unknown masked marvel is a smashing sensa- tion and Penny sets out to learn his name. She has only a torn piece of Father's tux as a clue. Father is thought to be the masked marvel. Lusty shouts of Let's go, Big Red! and Beat 'em, Bulldogs! can be heard for miles around whenever Wyandotte's team appears upon the scene. The sight of the Kay Cee section with its colorful splashes of red and white brings a lump to the throat of every returning grad. Organized pep is the backbone of high school athletics. Great is the task of keeping Kay Cees organized when they're bouncing with exuberance and energy. Mr. William Mclntire laffectionately known as Mr. Mac 7, the Kay Cee officers, and the varsity cheer- leaders have very ably solved this problem. They believe that an interested crowd is a cooperative one. To keep them interested, the Kay Cees sponsor many activities such as: the Kay Cee play, Father Knows Best, the Basketball and Swimming Banquet, the Spring Formal, and various mixers and pep asemblies throughout the year. lt is a privilege to belong to an organization such as this, so naturally there must be requirements for membership. A Kay Cee must keep his grade average at 3 or above. He must attend all home games, sit in the designated section, and wear the proper uniform. A Kay Cee must not have a bad office record, and last, but not least, he must sell the required number of tickets to all functions sponsored by the Kay Cees. Coach Ellis and his men may point with pride to a better than average year and a job well done. Displaying an unexpected aerial attack, the Canines de- feated Central l9 to 7 in Wyandotte's opening game. The first two touchdowns were produced by Dan Sheley, former half- back, who was converted to a quarterback, passing to lsh Wil- son. The third touchdown was made when J. W. Graves carried the ball in a Statue-of-Liberty play to set up a touchdown made by Dan Sheley. An alert Shawnee-Mission grid squad handed the Bulldogs their first defeat of the season with a score of l8 to l3. Wyan- dotte's brief moment of glory followed after Dave Chelesnik blocked an Indian punt, and the ball skewed into the path of Loren Rabon, who scooped it up on about the 30 and ran over. lsh Wilson's successful place kick gave the Canines their only lead. Traveling to Leavenworth, the Bulldogs returned to the victory side of the column as they defeated the Pioneers 22 to 0. Wyandotte drew first blood in the opening quarter when Don Saint downed one of the Leavenworth Pioneers in his own end zone for a 2-point safety. The Canines quickly pounded the Pioneers into the ground as they scored three touchdowns in the second quarter. The touchdowns were made by lsh Wilson and Dan Sheley with Wilson kicking two successful conversions. Wyandotte's ground attack proved too much for Wash- ington as the-Ellismen set'up six touchdowns and posted a 40 to O Sunflower league win. The touchdowns were made by J. W. Graves, Jack Rogers, Dan Sheley, Jerry Bell, and lsh Wilson who broke loose for a thrilling 72-yard run, the longest run of the season. Rod Rogers turned in some hard rushing through the middle along with Dan Sheley pouring on the steam off-tackle. lsh Wilson rambled at will, and J. W. Graves piled up the mileage for a fast moving, rushing game for the Bull- dogs. Spotlighted in defense was Charlie Brown, who had re- covered fram his injury suffered in an automobile accident. Rain and cold weather set the back drop for the Bulldog- Argentine game as the Canines swept past the Ponies, 3l to l2. By half time the Wyandotte gridsters had a l9 to O lead and threw in two other counters for good measure. Touchdowns By Gayle Kissick were made by lsh Wilson, Rod Rogers, J. W. Graves, Dan Sheley, and Jack Rogers. ln all, the Ellismen had a top notch line as Argentine quickly found out, and it points to the fine coaching given the team by Coach Ellis and his staff. J. W. Graves, right halfback in the fourth year of his football career, went out after playing five games of the season because of illness. With a score of 39 to 6 the Wyandotte's Homecoming victory over Ward made the evening festivities happy ones. Jack Rogers and Dan Sheley accounted for the first five touch- downs, and Rod Rogers piled over for the sixth one. Despite a flurry of eleven completed short passes, the Canines failed to put together any consistent drive as the Bull- dogs fell before Topeka, 20 to 6. Big Red marred the Capital City's hopes for a shutout when lsh Wilson raced 70 yards for the lone Canine tally. Charlie Brown played his best game of the season, commented Coach Ellis after the game. Others who showed remarkable ability at the defensive positions were Loren Rabon, Charles Klepec, and Dave Hills. Wyandotte grid men in their last game put up a tough first half battle against Lawrence, but ended on the short end of a 43 to l3 score. lsh Wilson made the first touchdown, and Dan Sheley made the last Canine tally of the season. Don Donahue's conversion was successful, which left the Bulldog score at I3 points. This game represented some fine playing by the seniors as they ended their last prep game of the year and for many ended their football career. This year's grid squad was captained by Charlie Brown, Dan Sheley, and Dave Chelesnik. Thanks go to head coach Ed Ellis and his assistants-David Kendall, Mark Plummer, and Bob Walton. The managers were Bob Sands, Gary Smith, and Dennis Renfro, who took good care of the team. The l957 captains-elect are lsh Wilson and Dave Hills. The following boys were chosen on the various all-star teams: All-state first-team-Dan Sheley, quarterback, Sun- flower League first team-lsh Wilson, halfback, All City first team-Loren Rabon, tackle, lsh Wilson, halfback, Dan Sheley, quarterback, Don Kennedy, guard, Dave Chelesnik, end, Second team-Darrell White, center, Rod Rogers, fullback, Honorable Mention-Dave Hills, center, J. The Bullpups, ending the season with a 5-3-l record, were on outstanding defensive unit. Only once was there more than one touchdown scored against the eleven, Five of the nine games the team held the opposition scoreless. Offensively the unit was of good calibre with some difficulty in the ground attack. By some well timed pass plays the Bullpups scored in six of the nine games aided by hard driving backs to make the few extra yards needed. This year's team was coached by Bob Walton. Junior Thiry and Jim Gill lead the scoring with 43 and 30 points respectively. The coaches Page 56 were head coach Charles Sheffield, J. B. Morgan, and Delvin Norris. eaerue garfefgaff by Jerry Kay Lewis The responsibility of continuing the great winning tradition of Wyandotte High School falls on the shoulders of ten lanky boys. But they have the situation well in hand. Under the watchful guidance of Coach David Kendall, they concluded a successful season by winning thirteen games and only losing two. These ten boys wanted to play basketball so badly that they gave their own time in the evenings to practice. Safe Klzamlaiona A gunshot rang out and suddenly hysterical cries sprang from a thousand throats. Murder? ln a way, yes! The Wyan- dotte Bulldogs had just slaughtered the Rosedale Wildcats to capture the Kansas Class AA Basketball Championship! Those hysterical cries were not cries of fright but of pure joy. Fans hugged each other and danced in the aisles. Tears of happiness flowed freely. Yes, Big Red had gone all the way-undefeated! They said it couldn't be done, but Coach Walter Shuby Shublom and his crafty Canines had other ideas. To prove their paint they started off the season by whipping Ward, Southwest, and North Kansas City in quick order, 66-50, 56-36, 66-39, respectively. Next-traveling to Topeka-the Bulldogs bounced their bas- ketball right over the talented Trojans resulting in a score of 50-47. A long trip, but worth every minute of it. The Lion men of Lawrence were determined to snap the cap right off the Wyandotte winning streak. They fought a hard game, but for all their determination, they couldn't quite match the smooth team work of the W cagers. Wyandotte wins again-66-58. The traditional spirit of Wyandotte led all loyal Canine supporters to Salina over the Christmas holidays for the Salina Invitational Tournament. Needless to say, the Bulldogs con- tinued their winning ways to take the trophy. Salina was the first to go down, 62-45, and Parsons followed in double-quick time, 56-42. When Bulldog basketeers invade the Shawnee -Mission reservation, a full-scale battle is sure to follow. Fans were certainly not disappointed. The Indians were looking for a few Canine scalps, but thanks to a last-ditch layup by Jack Whittier, with only l5 seconds of play remaining, Big Red saved its precious record and its scalp. ln spite of the double- trouble Bryan twins, Lawrence Comley scored 2l points, and the Bulldogs squeezed past, 56-54. Tying a ribbon around their ninth straight game of the season, W cagers clobbered Leavenworth's Pioneers, 92-56. Jr. Comley pumped through 27 points to grab high-point laurels for the night. Proving his ability was Rex Beach with l8 countersg all field goals, they came from l8 to 20 feet away completely baffling the Pioneer defense. Canine basketeers put on a dazzling display of defensive ability to completely bind a helpless Washington crew by the score of 50-37 to end the first round of Sunflower League play. The Wildcats were held to a mere 20 points in the first three quarters. The Argentine Mustangs seemed like frisky yearlings as they employed an agile zone defense against Big Red, but all to no avail as the Canines shook it and zipped to victory, 6l-5l. Paced by Larry Comley's 35-point output, the clever Canines whisked by the Topeka Trojans on the Bulldogs' own court. by Jerry Kay Lewis The Trojans were considered one of the biggest obstacles in the march to Sunflower League supremacy, but Big Red made the Trojan Horse look like a sway-backed nag as they romped for their twelfth straight win, 6l-52. Friday and the l3th game of the season. Unlucky? Not for our Bulldogs! The gymnasium was packed to over-flowing with fans who thrilled to the best game of the season, a real spine-tingler from the word Go! It was touch and go through- out the latter part of the contest as the lead changed hands several times. Wyandotte, with l:28 left, again took the lead with a shot by Jim Lugar, and the game was put on ice by the Bulldogs again gaining control and obtaining their final three- point lead to win the game, 54-5l. The Bulldogs chased the 'Cats up a tree on Washington's court to win their l4th straight and the Sunflower League Title. Comley and Beach cashed in on field goals and charity tosses as they scored 34 and 22, respectively. Winning by o score of 80-64, they concluded the Sunflower loop with a 6-0 slate. Paseo and Argentine were no match for the Wyandotte Bulldogs as the scores readily show. Paseo dropped out, 65-48, while the Mustangs fell behind, 57-51. Wyandotte wrapped up their second undefeated regular sea- son, in as many years, as they slipped by an upset-'minded group of men from Ward to the tune of 52-48. The Bulldogs met Washington in the first game of Regional play, easily winning by a score of 30-l7. lf the heart desires and the mind decides, the hands will deliver. The hands of Big Red certainly delivered as they whirled the Ward Cyclones right out of Regional hopes beating them 47-35. On to Wichita and the State Tournament! Wellington was completely out-classed by the classy Canines as Wyandotte easily won 59-26. Shuby's boys plastered the Parsons Railroaders in the semi-finals winning 47-35. Rex Beach injured his knee, putting him out of action in the third quarter-but not before he had scored l6 points for high-point laurels of the evening. With Beach unable to play, the Bulldog position was low- ered for favorites in the final contest. But Comley came throuah and led the number one team in the state on to victory, as he scored 37 points to break the record held by Joe Stevens of North set against Wyandotte in l954. lt was the first time in recent history that the State finals have been all Kansas City. The brilliant Bulldogs pranced to their second class AA crown in the past three years, as they beat off a poised Rosedale cage squad, 60-53. Rex Beach and Larry Comley, the greatest basketball players in the history of Wyandotte, were both named to berths on the ALL STATE squad. Phil Heitmeyer was placed on the second team for the state meet. Some will start in various jobs and work their way up the ladder of success while others, pursuing a higher education, will start out to the college of their choice. Seniors! Remember when we were Freshmen and how we used to admire the seniors and wished to be one of them. Remember our first impression of this enormous and beautiful building. We scurried around the halls like church mice hoping to find the right classes, even though we didn't always succeed. There were so many new things to do and, of course, there was that necessary evil, homework. But, it all passed too quickly and before we knew what was happening, we were Sophomores. Even though we were still underclassmen, we had a wonderful year. We took State were the joyous cries of the students and basketball boys in l955. We had the opportunity to make many new friends during the year. Many students came from the junior highs to help throng the halls of Wyandotte and make it the largest class in '55. Yes, it was a wonderful year and will never be forgotten. Then came the summer and when the fall came again we were Juniors. Now, at last, we were upperclassmen. Remember how exciting it was to choose our Senior rings? So many different ones to choose from. ' Then came that glorious time, The Passing of the Robe ceremony. ln this cere- mony we accepted the full responsibility that goes with being a Senior. We were the Class of '57. Then came the most outstanding year of our school life. Not only our Senior year but our last year ever to be in Wyandotte as a real part of the student body. There were more things to do than we had done in the three previous years put together. And, there was the feeling of pride that goes with being a Senior. Remember the thrill we felt when our Bulldogs stomped Ward at the Homecoming game? And then, there was the Christ- mas Formal and the Senior Party, 57 Varieties. Yes, it was hard to imagine our last year. We would miss all our friends whom we were accustomed to seeing every day, We would miss the teachers, too, as never again would we hear them say, l'll see you tonight for a seventh hour. But, perhaps the thing we would miss most of all would be Social Hall. For the past few years, Social Hall had been our gathering place where we went on Friday mornings to watch the Cheerleaders and yell for the team. Remember how pretty Social Hall looked at Christmas with the huge white tree and the candles abovethe fireplace. We will miss these things, of course, but we feel that we have accomplished many things during our four years at Wyandotte. These years will not be forgotten and will be cherished by all.
