To wear a Student Council pin is an honor given only to the one student elected from his homeroom to serve as a representative. Responsi- bilities consist of collecting money and selling tickets as well as other duties. Activities sponsored by the Student Council were two mixers after athletic games, the lost and found Service, dancing in the cafeteria during lunch time, the collection at Thanksgiving plus other charitable drives, and helping with the Homecom- ing Dance. This year's officers were elected for the first time by the upperclassmen. They were: Dean Newton, president: Dan Sheley, vice-president: Jerry Lewis, secretary: and Bill Tarry, treasurer. At Christmas time the musicians had a joint Christmas Party with the band members in the music room. Each year the orchestra tries to take an out-af- town trip and to have talented members compete in the State Music Contest. ln the spring the orchestra gave a concert for the entire student body and participated in a joint concert with the band in the evening. Many students at Wyandotte do not know that their high school is the only one in the state of Kansas that has fifteen minutes of free radio time every week during the first semester. Only a few capable students are chosen for the radio production course which is spon- sored by ,Mr. H. A. Billingsley, They are all members of the National Scholastic Radio and Television Guild, whose pin is pictured below. Each week the members have a different responsibility. By the end of the semester they must have completed the following: a major speaking part, directing, announcing, super- vising of sound effects, and adapting a fifteen minute radio script as well as writing an original script of their own. ' Maybe you have seen the radio production class leaving sixth hour on Thursday after- noons and wondered where they were going. After practicing all week on dramatic plays or a talent program, they make a tape recording each Thursday at the KCKN studio which is then presented at eight o'clock the following Sunday night. At the end of the program, as the theme song continues until the clock ticks off the remaining seconds, the members put away their scripts 'with a sigh hoping that next week will be as successful. , by Kathy McCaughey KAY EE PL Y TIGER ON HIS TOES CAST Bill McKee Sherry Heathman Frank Naylor Margie Nicholson Dennis Park Floyd l-laberkorn Sue Mason Bruce Barrett Alan Abrams Larry Jones Dee Ann Foley Sue Tanner John Patten Sandra Owens Marilyn Mann Judy Cross Mr. Knapp-Director -if is , BACK ROW, left to right: Warren Benson, Kay Ann Beck, Kay Peerson, Mr. A. Coach Ed Ellis' gridsters tallied two touchdowns to down the invading Central Eagles 12 to O in the sea- son's opening game. With both teams supporting a rugged defense, the Canines finally pulled ahead in the fourth quarter when Dan Sheley went over for the first TD of the season. A short time later Ray Laing scored on a quarterback sneak behind the center of the hard charging Wyandotte line. A startled Shawnee Mission eleven found out the hard way that being a favorite on paper doesn't always win a football game as the determined Canines battled them to a 6-6 tie. Showing off a newly acquired passing at- tack the Bulldogs scored first, but the Indians came back to tie. J. W. Graves made an outstanding play in the game as he gathered in a stray Redskin aerial and loped for a nice gain which started a drive climaxed by Bob Kohler's plunge from the two. Ron Salts and Mike Miller also played a fine game filling in for the injured Bob Gramer and Charley Brown, The homecoming jinx was broken with both the team and Queen, Carol Kukuk, walking away with the laurels of victory as the Bulldogs downed the Pioneers of Leav- enworth 13 to O. Consolation was gained, however, when the fired up Ellismen went on to break the Argentine Mustangs the following week. Capitaliz- ing on two fumbles, one of which was grabbed by Bob Westfall who scampered 41 yards for a TD, the Bull- dogs rolled up a score of 25 to 19. A strong Ward Cyclone offense stalled more than once as the underdog Ellismen sparkled on defense and dis- played a passing attack which moved them further up in the top ten teams of the state and won the game 32 to O. The roaring Bulldog crowd came to their feet as Clyde Pierce made a brilliant 74-yard broken field run and as Wyandotte's quarterbacks put together an offense which showed to all that the Canines must and would be respected. Although the Bulldogs outplayed the first place To- peka Troians statistically, they lost 7 to O on a touch- down which was made on a 58-yard pass play in the last ten seconds of the game. This blow was increased when the Red and White dropped a hard fought de- fensive battle to the Lawrence Lions the following week 13 to O. To finish the season up right twenty-two Wyandotte seniors sparked the team to a 31 to 13 victory over the Northeast Vikings. The seniors took the scoring honors as Doyle Nickels went over for three touchdowns to make him the team's leading scorer of the season with 30 points. FRONT ROW: Mr. Jensen, Ed Soule, Ed Neimann, Resolved: That the federal government should guar- antee higher education to qualified high school gradu- ates through grants to colleges and universities. If you passed Room 202 during the first semester, you no doubt heard this subject under debate by some of the twenty-seven debaters under the supervision of the coach, Leonard Jensen. The debaters were laboriously preparing to participate in the eleven tournaments Wyan- dotte attended this season. Starting off in high spirits for its first tourneys of the season the squad split to attend tournaments at Russell, Kansas, for the first time, ond the annual opener at Ft. Scott, Kansas, October 28 and 29, but they failed to place in either event. With determination still strong the novice Jensenites left for the Atchinson Novice Tournament November ll, but agoin returned empty handed. The Topeka tournament followed on the l8th and l9th of November. The novices set off again, this time to Manhattan for the annual Manhattan Novice Tournament December 3rd, and returned with second place honors. Failing to place by one loss the debaters returned from Pittsburg December I2 and l3, with an excellent record of only two losses. Showing their stuff at Wm. Chrisman the Barking Dogs gained first place laurels. The squad traveled to Salina, December l6 and l7, then to Emporio where they once again were kept out of semi-finals by one loss, then they traveled to to North Kansas City, January 6 ond 7. The younger de- baters attended the Olathe Novice Tournament. Shawnee and Wyandotte ore now holding their tournaments on alternate years and this year Shawnee played host. Wyandotte failed to place at this lost tournament of the season. Winding up with a record of 144 wins and 80 losses the debaters found that fun, friendship, experience in handling current notional problems, and sportsmanship were gained by all. With only two returning lettermen for the 1955-56 swim season, the Wyandotte tank team finished the season with a 6 won, 9 lost record. After a slow start in losing to the Wyan- dotte Alumni aggregation 53-29, the host team turned the tables on Topeka High's meremen with a close 36-30 victory in the latter's pool. Jim Laidlaw and Dan Cloughley, the two powerful seniors on an otherwise underclassman team, began a winning streak in their individual events which was to last up to and through the State finals without o single loss on the part of either boy. After losing a practice meet to the Junior College team 37-29, the Bulldog crew again called the right play in downing Topeka with a 42-35 score. Wichita East High invaded Wyan- dotte next and walked off with the spoils 51-26. ln so doing, the Blue Aces forced Jim Laidlaw to a new school record of 1:06.4 in the 100-yard breaststroke. Next came a breather for the Canines as they beat Went- worth Military Academy 47-21. The following day the Wyan- dotte swimmers avenged a former defeat by pulling away in the final relay to take a practice meet away from Junior Col- lege by one point, 34-33, Then with only one day of rest, the frogmen faced the strongest team in the conference, Wichita West High School, only to lose 49-19. Dan Cloughley, who was consistently improving, hit a total of 232.1 points in tak- 'VWQ the diving away from Ed Davis and Bob Thomas the 2nd and 3rd best divers in the State. Jim Laidlaw out-touched Pat Ryan in the breast stroke by .1 of a second to win that event which proved to be his closest race of the season. Fol- gngvirg this meet the reserves walloped the Wentworth crew On February 11, Wyandotte lost 39-29 to North High of Wichita, Don Cloughley scored a new high in total points for diving, 242.4, while Ralph Hunt swam to a new Junior record in the 300-yard breast stroke with 1:O8.4. Next, Wyandotte overpowered Kemper Military school 43-23 in the Boonville pool. Coffeyville, perenial state champs eight years in suc- cession, won in the last relay event 41-27. Don Kennedy, junior backstroker, swam his best time of the season in the 100-yard race in 1:1 1.4. Wyandotte then traveled to Wichita where they met all three Wichita schools in dual competition on a Friday and Saturday. One bright spot of the otherwise fateful weekend was the showing of a promising freshman boy named Terry Lanaman. Terry swam the 40-yard free style against Wichita West in :21.0, and free style in 1:O2.8, both set freshman records for that event. Wichita West won Friday afternoon 41-27. Wichita North won Saturday morning 48-20 and the some afternoon Wichita East won a close contest 37-31. ln this meet Tom Tillery, junior freestyler, swam 120.0 for his best time and a new junior record in the 40-yard free style. Lee Leger, sophomore distance freestyler, set a new sophomore record in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:25.45 in this some meet. Again heading for Wichita with sights set high for a spot in the top three positions in the final standings of the State Swim Meet, the Waterdogs suffered disappointment when they had to settle for fourth behind Coffeyville. Eight tenths of a second in the Medley relay forced the Bulldogs to second in that event and a fourth in the State meet. Jim Laidlaw, powerful butterfly breaststroker, won in 1:06.6, and Don Cloughley scored 183 points in diving to cop that event. Other place winners were: Ralph Hunt, Tom Tillery, and Don Kennedy, all juniors. The tank team was composed of four freshmen, four sophomores, four juniors, and only two seniors this year. Next year will see seven returning lettermen and a much more experienced and mature tank team. This highly skilled team ended their regular season with a record of 18 wins and no losses, first place in the lnvitational Tournament, first place in the Sunflower League, first place in the Mythical City League, first place in the Regional Tournament, and second nlace in the State Tournament. Altogether this made a final record of 22 wins and 1 loss, with the team breaking 12 previously held records. Beginning their all victorious season on December 2nd, the Bulldogs easily left Westport. High School trailing by a score of 69-35. Meeting next with their long standing city rivals, Vlgagg L-l1igh, the Canines calmed the Cyclones with a score o - . Then traveling across the river the W team downed Southwest 55-35. The following week the Shawnee Mission lndians arrived at Wyandotte with a fiery determination to break their 2-year losing record against the Bulldogs. Being unsuccessful in this attempt, the defeated tribe returned to their teepee realizing by the final score of 63-53 that more than determination was needed to defeat the invincible Bull- dog team. With a cry of victory the Cagers next buzzed by the North- town Hornets with an impressive score of 75-55. Making their first bid for the Sunflower League Title, the Washington Wildcats appeared to be the first real competition the Canines had to deal with. Proving they weren't ready to lose that early in the season, Wyandotte finished the game with the final score being 51-41. Racking up their 7th straight victory the Bulldogs ended up on the long end of a 60-45 final score against the Topeka Trojans. Being next invited to Parsons for the Invitational Tourney in which Wyandotte, Wichita North, Salina, and Par- sons participated, Wyandotte downed Wichita North the first night by a score of 67-50. Thus being eligible to compete for first place, the Bulldogs played Salina and ended the game with a 77-47 score and consequently received the trophy. Despite the efforts of the Northeast scoring ace, Jim Hoff- man, the W team easily rolled past the No. 1 team of Kansas City, Mo., with a score of 70-42. Meeting next one of the top scorers in Kansas, Bob Casteneda of Argentine, the Canines trounced the Mustangs 59-39, allowing Casteneda only 18 points throughout the entire game. Trying once again to scalp the. Bulldogs, the Shawnee Mis- sion lndians' second attempt proved even more unsuccessful than their first. The final score being 75-59. The Washing- ton Wildcats, trying to make good their previously tried upset, quickly discovered that victory was once again to be denied them. The Red and White team made this denial em- phatic with o score of 67-31. Running their victories to 14 straight, the W squad shut out the Leavenworth Pioneers 65-43. Meeting the Tro- jans from Topeka for the second time, Shublom's Cagers forced the Trojans to return home defeated by a score of 67-43. Chalking up their highest score of the season the Basketeers outclassed the Argentine Mustangs and succeeded in breaking the previous record of total points ever scored by Wyandotte in a single game. Not disappointing the large crowd of spectators who came to view the much publicized Wyandotte team, the Canines ran up a score of 94-665 there- by Sandra Owens Deanna Peckham, Jo Ann Sivits With the season ended the first obstacle to be overcome by the Bulldogs on their journey toward the State Tournament was the Sumner Spartans. While the Spartans gave Wyan- dotte its first scare of the year by staging a last quarter rally, the Wyandotte team proved their worth by pouring in enough baskets to finish the game with a score of 66-55. Being victorious over the Spartans, the only thing standing in the way of Wyandotte and the State Tournament was Shaw- nee Mission. Heeding lessons taught earlier in the regular season by the Bulldogs, Shawnee Mission tried a new approach in the finals of the Regional Tournament. After the Canines made the first basket, the lndians held the ball in a freeze. With only a few seconds remaining in the first quarter the Red Skins scored their first basket tying the score 2-2. The Bulldogs returned in the second quarter giving the lndians a dose of their own medicine only coming out of their stall long enough to score a second basket giving them a lead of 4-2 at the end of the first half. Forced to admit the height and rebounding supremacy of the W Cagers the Indian tribe was compelled to play regular ball the remainder of the game. Even with the new strategy the lndians found it impossible to down the Bulldogs, losing by 22-13. With the winning of this game the Wyandotte High School Bulldogs proved, as they have for three years, that Shawnee Mission was heap big smoke but no fire. We would like to pay special recognition to the Pep Band, cheerleaders, and Kay Cees for their excellent school spirit and enthusiasm throughout the year. Perhaps the most popular addition to our games this year was the Pep Band. After the first few games, these boys and their music came to be as much anticipated as the game itself. Wyandotte, also, had some of the best cheerleaders to be found anywhere. The ability to perform together in unison was commented on by nearly everyone who had a chance to see them. Next year's cheerleaders will have a great deal to live up to. The Kay Cees can congratulate themselves for a job Pep Club members were always there yelling their team. The tourney was held at the K-State Field House, Manhattan, Kansas, March l5th, l6th, and l7th. On Thursday night, March l5th, Wyandotte was victorious in playing Winfield 62-58 which entitled them to meet Hutch- inson in the semi-finals Friday night. Being again victorious against the Salt Hawks with a score of 47-41 the Bulldogs ad- vanced to the finals to play Newton on Saturday night. Because of their outstanding undefeated season, the Bulldogs entered the championship game as the favored team. Traveling many miles, some 2,000 Wyandotte rooters streamed into the Field House anxiously awaiting the opening tip-off. The anxiety increased even more, however, as the game progressed into what soon proved to be the most heart- breaking of the Bulldog season. The Newton Railroaders took advantage of the Canine's coldest night of the season to build up a big first half lead. Proving that they weren't to be defeated so easily the Bulldogs closed the l3 point gap to tie the score at 39-39. As the final minutes of the ball game drew near, the Bull- dogs staged one last attempt to pull ahead, but with victory so close at hand, the Railroaders refused to let thot first place trophy slip from their hands. Consequently we ended on the short end of a 45-39 score. Although Wyandotte did not come out first in the final game of the tournament, they certainlycame out on topas far as sportsmanship was concerned. Proof of this lies in a statement made in the Manhattan Mercury. For putting on a show at a basketball tournament you just can't beat Wyandotte, The Kansas city school, biggest in the meet with a student body of 2,l92, goes all out for just such a shindig and were a hit in their games. The six Bulldog cheerleaders are about the best there are and they are for and away the best organized. Their cheers are perfectly organized and the gals are always in unison. lt's a fine change from some of the slipshod cheer units that you run across during a basketball season. Wyandotte also had a large group of adults on hand ond even had an all--mole brass band to add to the fervor of the games ..... Even though Wyandotte emerged from the final game the losing team, the fans proved that they were behind their team lOO percent, win or lose, This was proved by the fact that never once was there silence or half-hearted cheers from the Red and White stands. Wyandotte, without a doubt, exhib- ited one of the greatest shows of school spirit and good sports- manship ever witnessed at a State AA Tournament. As the Bulldoys accepted the second place trophy from Dr. Howard Hill, Head of the Kansas State Speech Department, the fans were disappointed in the outcome of the game, but very, very, proud of what they consider to be the best team Wyandotte has ever had. Braving the rain and hail of Sunday morning, the Cheer- leaders and many proud Wyandotter's were on hand to welcome the teams return from Manhattan. As a final tribute to this great team an all-school pep as- sembly was held Monday morning in the auditorium. At this time the trophies won throughout the season were presented to members of the Board of Education by Co-Captains Alan Don- aghue and Tom Lewis. According to the records we aren't the Champs, but to us the boys are the best team in the State. Our cry always has been and always will be, We're from Wyandotte, couldn't be prouder. We've finally reached the cli- max to four wonderful years of studying and preparing for the day when we would become graduates of Wyandotte High School. Now as this day approaches we are suddenly filled memories of many happy events experienced within these o s. Remember the first time we entered Wyandotte? Our feel- ing of expectancy was mixed with feelings of awe and momen- tary bewilderment. As we walked down the halls, we wondered how a little freshman could ever become a part of a large school. With the help of those Big Seniors and the teachers we quickly learned our way around, and grade school days were forgotten. Before we knew it school was over, and when we returned in the Fall we were sophomores. During this year we made many new friends, for the grad- uates of the junior high schools had now entered Wyandotte helping to make our class the largest in the school. We had the privilege of belonging to the Kay Cees and cheering at the basketball and football games. Also we were able to hold our class party in the evening instead of after school. With so many things happening, the year was soon over and we were at last upperclassmenl We'll never forget our Junior Year, for we took the State Basketball Championship for the first time since we entered Wyandotte. On the more serious side, we were beginning to prepare for our role as Seniors by the selection of our class rings. Most important, however, was the Passing of the Robe ceremony, which symbolized the passing of authority to the Class of '56. Left to right: Mike Miller, president, Don Rabon, vice-president, Mr. Wools, sponsor, Elaine Dempsey, secretary, Beverley Bicknell, treasurer. Our Senior Year has been the year of years. We won our homecoming game for the first time in many a season and broke our homecoming jinx. Next was the Senior Play which was a big success, and the Junior-Senior Basketball garne with the Seniors winning. Two important events taking place were the Masquerade Ball and the Leap Year Dance. The Senior Prom was a magnificent climax to our social life at Wyandotte. Soon we will reach the happy, yet sad ending to our high school days. Yes, with graduation we are bringing an end to many things. As we go our separate ways, we know we will never see many of our classmates again. Many things will be for- gotten, but we'll never forget Social Hall at Christmas time, the enthusiasm at pep assemblies and games, or the spirit with which we worked together, These are things which will live on in our hearts to remind us of four wonderful years at Wyandotte.
