FH1D 'HWPS The Science Field Club was organized by Mr. Wallace Good for the purpose of training young men who are in- terested in science as a career. The boys learn three im- portant things: subject matter, the method for doing scien- tific research, and how to publish research. To belong to the field club the boys must earn supe- rior grades, take four years of English, two years of a for- eign language, and three years of math, they write eight research papers, and publish at least one piece of original research. During the year the boys go on eight field trips into a six-state area with professional scientists from colleges and universities. As a reward for their achievement the boys are made eligible for awards in science fairs, for university scholar- ships ranging up to 52,000 a year, and are generally pre- pared for professional careers. ' 15, 3 3 3 The Ellismen Beginning the season with an inexperienced, but en- thusiastic team the Bulldogs toppled the Central Eagles 50 to O. Co-captain Warren DeGoler crashed through the Eagles' line to mark up the first score. Another was made in the third. Later in the last canto the Ellismen nailed two more. Out to burn the Shawnee-Mission teepeeshthe Canines found it was only their dreams that turned to ashes when they were defeated by the Indians. This was the third year the Bulldogs had been tripped at a homecoming game. There was nailbiting closeness to the goal twice, but each time the line was set back. Traveling to Leavenworth with blood in their eyes after the homecoming loss, the Ellismen achieved success by dumping the Pioneers from their wagons 20 to 7. Ron Cox, fullback, made the first Wyandotte touchdown from the 5-yard line. Then one was made by the Pioneers. A second was scored for Wyandotte by Warren DeGoler, and in the third quarter Ron Cox again crashed through the line for a third touchdown. Against the undefeated Washington Wildcats, the Bulldogs proved what a strong defense line they had by keeping the Wildcats scoreless through all four stanzas. Thinking they had achieved success by reaching the 3-yard stripe, Washington was suddenly fooled when the Canines took over. The Ellismen scored twice in the third quar- ter to beat Washington 12 to 0. Behind the Mustangs in the first canto the Bulldogs streaked through the second quarter to score 20 points. At the halftime the score was 20 to 7. In the third Argen- tine attempted a comeback by rallying. The Canines made two more tallys before the game ended. The Ponies gal- loped through with 20 seconds left to leave the score at 35 to 20 in Wyandotte's favor. By defeating Wards Cyclones in their sixth game the Canines took the city championship for the fourth straight year. Even though hindered by fumbles, the Ellis- by Joyce Story men came through with a 7 to 6 victory. ln the first stanza the Cyclones tallied against us for the first time in four years. Wtirren Delioler penetrated the Cyclone line for Wyandottes score. Wyandorte eyes watched breathless as Ron Casts kick sailed over for that extra victory point. Coming from behind in the last quarter the Big Red broke the longtime record of being defeated by Topeka, by turning the tibles in a I9 to l-4 victory. Wyzindotte had not won against Topeka in the capital city since 1952. Wyandotte. was leading 6 to 0 at the half. The Bulldogs scored another in the third quarter, but Topeka came around with two fast scores. Wytintlotte came through with another one to win the game. With a gallant heart and a fighting spirit the Canines took their second loss of the season from Lawrence, the first place team in the state. The Lions scored 36 points to our 6. All scores were made in the first three cantos. In the last stanza the Bulldogs controlled the ball IUOSI of the time. Dad's night, the last game of the season, was a credit to the team. The Ellismen beat the Northeast Vikings 26 to 7. The Norsemen made the first touchdown, but Wyandotte burst through the line to even up the score, just before halftime Roy Lynnes swept over the stripes for a tally. Warren DeGoler made the third touchdown. Rog- er Sevedge ran 15 yards for the last tally of the season. Hats off to a great grid squad. All-city honors went to Barcus, Cox, and Hughes on the first team, DeGoler, Fendorf, Holt, Loudon and Mor- rissey on the secondg and Kohler and'O'Neill honorable mention. Sunflower league first team births went to Bar- cus, Cox, DeGoler, and Loudon, while second team mem- bers were Fendorf and Holt, Barcus. DeGoler, Hughes, and Morrissey were K.C.K, Area All-Stars. Larry Barcus was listed on the Northeast Kansas first team with Warren DeGoler and Bob Hughes on the second team. Barcus also rated the all-state third team at a tackle position. Out for a win after the javatown loss, the Norris- men swam through for a 38 to 28 victory. To give them experience Coach Norris used reserves for this meet. By taking the final relay event the Canines slipped through to win. Roy Lynnes, captain, swam through with one of the two Waterdog firsts in their loss to the strong Wichita East Blue Aces. With a score of 242.6 points Dick Eber- hardy won the diving event. The final score was 21 for Wyandotte and 45 for East. All the way it seemed an up and down season for the Canines. For the Topeka meet it was an up event for Wyandotte, as the Waterdogs swamped the Trojans 52 to 14. Firsts were taken by jim Laidlaw, Mike Flem- ing, Roy Lynnes, Richard Walsh, Mike Whitacre, and Leonard May. In the events against the Wichita teams the Norris- men lost the first one to West and took the second one from North. Against West the Waterdogs dropped the tank meet 37 to 29. jim Laidlaw won the 100-yard breaststroke. Undefeated Dick Eberhardy again took first with 255.9 points, an unofficial State record. For Wyandotte How- ard, Tillery, Walsh and Lynnes took the 160-yard free- st le. Y To make up for the West loss the Waterdogs drowned North 39-27. Wyandotters took first in every thing except the 40-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke. Still undefeated Eberhardy rolled up 236.2 points for an- other first. A sweep was gained by the Norrismen when they outclassecl Kemper 58 to 8. The Canines took first in every event. The next two meets were dropped to Wichita East and to West. The frogmen dropped the East meet 25 to 40. Firsts were taken for Wyandotte by Roy Lynnes in the 40-yard freestyle and Dick Eberhardy took the diving event. Bowing to West again the Waterdogs lost 19 to 46. The only first taken by the Tanksters was the diving event. In the state meet at Coffeyville undefeated Dick Eb- erhardy won the state championship in diving and Mike Whitacre, another Waterdog, took third in diving. Su- premacy was again held by Coffeyville as they again took first in the meet. Other points for the Canines were made by Leonard May, who took third in the backstroke and Jim Laidlaw, who took fourth in the breaststroke event. bw ws- r - , LJ ff' Dick Eherhardy Senior-2 years-diving Stare Champion fs 5 U v I v Coach Norris as Roy Lyn nes Senior-5 years-freestyle Captain Rrnhard Walsh B' Leonard May -, Senior--2 years-backsrrokc Mrke Flcmmg Senior-backstroke Senior-2 years-freestyle Stan Howard Robert Broun jerry Dulaney Senior-freestyle Senior-freestyle QQ , '.',7- junior-freestyle Tom Trllery Sophomore-freestyle .-., -,-3 ,X , ' , ff v, f' '- Q' K -q wk 'V Jim L?-il-Haw Doug McDaniel XX JUFUOT-bff35'5ff0kC , junior-breastsrroke jack Stanley Mike Whitacrc junior-5 years Senior-5 years-diving manager 4 ,g Q fi . r f i . .4 I W , , 'ffiaifi' 2- TMBU 6 5 as R , :Lf JOYCE StorY 1vcn f'r-- L0 if Putting on exhibitions during halftime at home basketball games has been the project of the Wyan- dotte tumblers.
