The topic for the 1953-54 season being: Resolved-That the President of the United States should be elected by the direct vote of the people. The debate team under the supervision of Coach Leonard Jensen, consisted of Charles Shanklin, Brad Lashbrook, Care Munc Bob Ferluga, Roger Wilson, Harold McDaniel, Marilyn Rawlins, Nicki Economy ,John Patton, Ed Keyes, Y Y- Eleanor Knight, Darrell Knight, Martha Mason, Susan Mason, Joe McFall, Sherry Whistler, Ed Niemann, Joe Phillips, jack Gorelick, Loren Taylor. Starting off the season the debaters traveled to Fort Scott on October 30-31, but failed to place. Two weeks later with spirits still high, the jensenites went to Atchison where they took first place in the sophomore division. Following their Hrst victory the Bulldogs accepted Topeka's invitation and on November 20, Charles Shanklin and B d L hb k entered the serrii-finals onlyo to be defeated, thus taking third place. WYANDUTTE DEBATE TUUHNAMENT gg md HAY EEE IJEEIEERS by Mildred Swim and Janet Hackel Yea Wyandotte! Let's go Bulldogs! These could well be the words heard from about four hundred Kay Cee members, cheering our foot- ball or basketball team on to victory. The membership of the pep club is history- making in size. The reason being the newly adopted constitution. This is the first year that anyone may join-be they sophomore, junior or senior as long as they fulfill the requirements. A new freshmen pep club has also been or- ganized. They too must fulfill the same require- ments as the upper classmen. This new system has worked very successfully under the able leadership and guidance of Mr. William Mc- Intire, the sponsor, or Mr. Mac as he is affectionately called. The Kay Cees sponsored three big dances: the Fall Festival, the Spring Festival, and the Spring Formal. A play and two athletic ban- quets were also on the agenda. We're sure everyone holds memories of at least one of these occasions. To belong to the Kay Cees is a high honor and to students wishing to join it is a challenge to make your years at Wyandotte memorable ones. At the studio they make a tape recording of their program which is presented on Sunday afternoon at 4: 15 p.m. News and interviews, panel discussions on teen-a ge problems, dramatic presentations and talent shows have been on the agenda for this past year. It takes a lot of initiative and a tremendous amount of work, of which Mr. H. A. Billingsley receives his share, to get everything off smoothly. Their enthusiastic intentions really took shape when they trampled easily over Central in a traditional opening victory. Featuring a tough, hard-charging line, together with an equally fast and versatile backfield, the Canines were more than ready to raid the Shawnee-Mission teepee. With less than 1 minute left in the first half, Shawnee tackle Dick Galamba intercepted a pass on his own 24 and raced for the Bulldog goal. Only the speed of Don Smith, who brought him down on Wyandotte's 14, saved the Bulldogs. Although statistically it was definitely Wyandotte's game, the contest ended when Wiley was stopped only 2 yards short of pay dirt. After defeating Central 26-0, and tying Shawnee Mission 0-0, the rugged Bulldogs were ready to pull a repeat performance of the first game on Leavenworth-and did. They left the Pioneers stunned by a 34-0 defeat. Next came Benton of St. Joseph. In the first meeting of the two schools, Wyandotte rolled right past the Cardinals in a 39-7 victory, which was the first time a team had managed to break through our powerful line for a touchdown. The Canines then marched toward Argentine. With Wiley running around right end and Blanchard racing 87 yards for touchdowns, the Ellismen defeated the Mustangs 19-9. They followed a 13-0 victory over Ward. With the season little more than half over, all attention was turned toward Topeka and the top tussle of the season. The slightly favored, quite capable eleven of Wyandotte never quite found them- selves that night. The Trojans left us with a heartbreaking 26-0 defeat over which to ponder. In the contest at Lawrence, Collins picked up a Lawrence bobble on our 21 and raced all the way for a touch- down. Because of a clipping penalty the score was nullified and the ball placed on the Lions 45. Kohler flipped a screen pass to Garrison who then sprinted 43 yards for the touchdown. Linemen Laddish and Harman turned in exceptionally outstanding performances against Lawrence. The resolute squad battled the stubborn Lions the entire contest which ended in a 7-7 tie. The Bulldogs next entertained the North- east Vikings. With Moles gaining 115 yards on the ground and Kohler throwing for 110 more, Wyan- dotte won 34-14. In a muddy afternoon contest with Salina, the finale of the 1953 season went to Wyan- dotte in an 18-7 triumph with Kohler scoring two touchdowns and passing for the third. Our fine squad was captained by Ron Wiley, halfbackg George Laddish, tackle, and Dick Harman, center. Thanks go to head coach Ed Ellis, and his assistants, Dick Channel, Rex Hoy and Carter Burns. This year's unsung heroes, the men behind-the-scenes, were Bob O'ffill, Gary Gruendel, and Norman Dunwoodie who very ably managed our great team. Little did every loyal Wyandotter suspect that December 4 was to be the beginning of the most successful season with the most heartbreaking ending that they were ever to witness. After a terrific 1952-53 season the Canines returned with even greater determination. ff 'Q . They began proving their intentions by trouncing Leavenworth in the is opening encounter 62-45. Facin the rebuilt team of Shawnee-Mission the g i confident Bulldogs revenged the Indians with a 52-35 victory. Too soon, Red and White fans began hearing strains which strangely resembled those of Let's take state. Next in line were Southwest, Argentine and North Kansas City. In the latter contest, Big Ray Johnson, who was shaping up to be a main cog in the cagey aggregation, led the attack on Northtown with 29 points. Topeka, who was rated as one of the top teams in Kansas failed to stop the Canine attack and surrendered 51-48. Extending their winning streak to seven straight games, the crafty quintet coasted to a 58-39 win over Emporia on the loser's court. With Bill Bennett out due to sickness, Johnson and Ed Kohler carried the main scoring load by accounting for 40 of the Bulldogs' 58 points. Returning to our own court, the victorious basketeers toppled the Washington Wildcats and Ward Cyclones to the tune of 61-34 and 76-45, respectively. With 12 seconds left in the final tilt of the Invitational Tournament, Bennett sank a short jump shot from the side to give Wyandotte a squeezing victory of 51-S0 over the Parsons' Vikings. Bennett's game-winning basket gave the Bulldogs the only lead in the entire rally. The Big Five, Ron Wiley, Kohler, Bennett, Lloyd Martley and johnson, next met Rosedale. They added another mythical city league victim to their list by walloping the Wildcats 59-40. The Burnsmen made it thirteen straight when they cornered the hustling five from Ft. Scott, 62-47. The Bulldogs then journeyed to Capitol City. With Kohler and Wiley both carrying three fouls at half-time the Bulldogs were unable to drive as aggressively as usual. However, they made a triumphant come-back in the third stanza and easily edged out Topeka, 55-49. Remaining the only undefeated AA team in the state of Kansas, Wyandotte used their superior height and experience to shellac Lawrence 78-39. Bevo johnson led the attack with 23 points followed by sophomore Tom Lewis with 15. With ace rebounding and smooth- fioor play, the red-hot W team continued their torrid pace throughout the remainder of the season with wins over Emporia, Argentine, Shawnee and Ward. ' CoAcH CARTER BURNS Canines eagerly trekked to Shawnee for the Regional Tournament. After winning a bye, Wyandotte met Argentine: Their cool methodical play enabled them to absolutely stun the Mustangs 65-27. The Ferocious Five found it easy to sweep aside Shawnee 60-44 to make it 21 in a row. Top rebounding honors went to Martley for the night as potent forwards Johnson and Bennett paced the W team' with 21 and 18, respectively. Thus, Wyandotte was off for Manhattan and the Kansas state class AA championship play-offs. A red-hot band of Bulldogs mercilessly clipped the upset minded Columbus club with a one-sided victory 64-36 in the first round. In this game, however, Bennett suffered a severe back injury which hospitalized him several hours and slowed him down considerably in the remaining two contests. Now they faced the Topeka Trojans whom they had beaten twice lpreviously. Trailing 54-55 with two seconds remaining, Wiley confidently stepped to the line and bucketed two free throws, as no one else could have, and Wyan- dotte had won again. This hair-raiser had been an uphill battle for the Canines who somehow lacked the sharpness that drove Columbus into the ground the previous evening. Immediately following the contest, ace center Martley stricken with strep throat. .N Wichita North, who had taken third place in our own Invitational Tournament, had come through in their bracket and so it was the Redskins vs. the Bulldogs in the major tilt. Never before has any team completed an undefeated season and emerged the state champion. With Martley and Bennett playing under definite physical strain, this was one time, only once, when Wyandotte could not stage another whirl-wind finish. Sporting all-state guard Joe Stevens, who was good for 35 points, the Canines bowed to North, 63-55. After the annual intra-squad meet, the energetic Waterdogs opened the regular season in the Topeka pool with a 35-31 victory. Led by diver Dick Eberhardy and a medley relay team composed of Jerry Sprague, Jim Shearer and Jim Briley, the Canines dunked Wentworth Military Academy with a decisive victory of 50-16. Wyandotte was handed its first defeat of the 1953-54 season when Wichita East, led by Jeff Farrell, splashed past 36-30. ' The Waterdogs next traveled to Wichita for a quadrangular swimming meet with the teams of Wichita East, North and West. Losing the freestyle relay to a powerful East squad, but barely de- feated 35-31, the determined Canines came back to dunk North 58-8 and West 40-26. After this meet Sprague emerged the only unde- feated tankster, with Shearer and Eberhardy both losing their un- defeated crowns to East. The Canines splashed to their sixth victory in eight starts when they downed Wentworth 50-16. Wyandotte took seven out of eight starts. In the final relay of the Wichita North- Wyandotte meet the Waterdogs added the seventh win to their string by a score of 40-26. Coifeyville, who has had the state cham- pionship since 1948 defeated Wyandotte in our own pool. Our tank- sters took second and third places plus a first in the-freestyle relay to amass the highest number of points a Coffeyville opponet scored this season. In the finale of the regular season Wyandotte downed Kemper, S8-8. The Bulldogs wound up the year by taking third place at Wichita in the state meet. They swam for a total of twenty-eight points. As space hostess Janet Davies gives us our air cushion, we notice Shaaron Steeby offering a space pill to the very green George Laddish. As we land on Mars, Captain Paul Corbett and Co-Captain Jim James assist us off the ship, to be greeted by the city's wel- coming committee, Dugan Cowan, Don Smith, and Roy Hicks. They show us to the control tower, where Marvin Moles, Gene Kane, Glenn Smiley and Mary Lou Vose are busy scheduling trips. We then hail a Jet Bus driven by Duane Osborne. When we drop in front of the Bennett Hotel, Bud Col- lins and Bob Reed take our gear. As we stop in the lobby to have an Allvine-shake, we notice waitress Susie MacNeal talking to chef Francis Rath. On the way up to 326, we see Janet and Charlie Nichols demonstrating something new in modern space clothing, designed by Jan Tice and Jan Coffman. We freshen up to start on the tour of the city. Two doors down the street is the fJoanj Phillips College. We visit some of the class rooms where we notice Mildred Swim teaching modern studies and in the corner stand George Bigelow and Don Scott who have been ba-ad boys. In this college, Shir- ley Jackson is trying to teach modern dancing to Lloyd Martly, Wayne Katz, Doug Day, and Fred Derge. Their partners are Carol Garnier, Janet Hackel, Pat Cox, and Nancy Fujisaki. We leave this college to dine at Chanowski's exclusive restaurant, where pretty hat-check girl, Virginia Gilbreath, greets us, and head-waiter, Larry Tharp, shows us to our seats. On the entertainment bill are singers Ron Wiley and Ann Reid. Sax duet by Terry Williams and Harold Short. In the chorus line are Robbie Denny, Carol Lemmon, Gail Shipman, Virginia Briegel, Delores Skaggs, Ed Kohler-WHO?-and Marie Reece. We see a superb swimming act with Janet Larson and Dick Van Hooser diving into the Hypo- drome where the Waterettes, Jim Shearer, Betty Lou Douglas, Kenny Faerber, Jerry Sprague, and Marilyn Richards are doing their act. Music is provided by Carol Braly. Have you ever seen an interplanatory square-dance? We shall now. The caller is none other than the bearded man himself, Roger Wilson. Some of the squares which we see 'livin it up' are Dean Gar- rison, Bob Hay, Gary Russell, Joe McFall, Ronald Ott, Charles Shanklin and, oh yes, Ellen Proudfit is here too. Oh, oh, Gary Eells goofed again. He dove for the meteor when he should have dug for the comet. From the dance we decide to view our first Feeleo-Vision movie, in 7 dimensions. The cashier at the door is Larry Sargert, the ticket taker is Wally Brown, and those running the concession stand are Nancy Small, Sandy Bannister, and Shirley Bartowski. Dave Mapes hands us our robot-burgers and Bob Malaby fills our canteens with atom juleps fa soft drink?j. The usher that shows us to our re- clining lounges is Carey Muncy. We push our way past Ruth and Richard Janes. The title of the dramatic presentation is The Creep with 32 Toes starring Kenny Tanner and supported by Larry Terry and the WHA-AT? Also in the cast are Charlie Wagner as the anemic weight lifter and Guy Farrar and Kenny Payne as the rock collectors. As an added attraction Little Ray Johnson does a ballet act with Steve Hinds. When we leave the show, we stop off in M-A-R-S Wireless Studio, where a panel group, consist- ing of Janice Jenson, moderator, Ed Ash, Marilyn Buckley, Pat Sutton and Fred Benson are having a discussion on modern Mars music. Bill Blanchard and Jerry Howell are two of the stars behind the stars. In the adjoining studio, we see Lea Mortenson, Jeanette Miller, Wilma Krohn, Mary Alice Col- lins, and Barbara Moles warming up for their trampeline act. This excellent group is known as Bob Palmer and his bouncing babes. Making our way back to the plane we know that we shall never forget our enjoyable 4 year week- end on Mars. fr I . ' .
