RADIO PRODOC'7l0N When you tune on KCKN at 7:30 Monday nights you'll hear, This Is Wyandotte presented by the Wyandotte radio production class. This is the only group of its kind in greater Kansas City that actually has a class on school time and receives credit toward graduation. During their fifteen minutes of free air time you'll hear, alternately, news and interviews or a dramatic, short story. Each member of the produc- tion class belongs to the National Scholastic Radio Guild. Members of the club are picked by Mr. H. A. Billingsley, sponsor, according to their ability to as- sume responsibility, good grades, dramatic ability, and typing ability, which is preferred but not es- sential. There are no officers since each member as- sumes various responsibilities each week, such as director, announcer, adapter of plays to radio, sound effects supervisor, interviewer, actor, or actress. Of course, like most clubs, there isn't all work and no play, for they have had a Christmas party, a picnic, two parties at the homes of members, and a trip to WDAF-TV. Avg , ,I Lll 2, KW 2 A X Wxw f s 5 . M By BETTE CARPENTER and JANE HICKLIN It has been a wonderful year here at W.H.S. and the Kay Cees have done their part in making it end so happily. Three hundred and seventeen students cheered our various athletic teams on to victory. The members are elected by their home rooms, and this year's group is the largest ever elected in the history of the pep club. Under the able leadership and guidance of Mr. William Mclntire, the sponsor, this new high in membership was accomplished. Things were doin' this year as the Kay Cees sponsored three big dances: the Fall Festival, honor- ing the Football Teamg the Spring Festival, honoring the Basketball and Swimming Teams, and the Spring Formal. We're sure every one has happy memories from at least one of these occasions. We think this year's group was the most enthusiastic ever seen at Wyandotte, but it has become evident that a change must occur. Our system of voting on a few members from each homeroom has caused many disputes as well as disappointments. Until now there had been no solution to this problem other than buying a few more sweaters each year. Now a new constitution has been formed and will be put into practice next year. The new pep club will be open to everyone who wishes to abide by certain, specific rules set down in the new constitution. It is hoped by all that this new venture will be sup- ported by every loyal studentg and if it is, your brief stay at Wyandotte may hold more pleasant mem- ories of the past in the future. Traveling to eleven tournaments, capturing nine trophies, climaxed by the first regional champion- ship in ten years, Wyandotte debaters enjoyed one of the most successful seasons in the intellectual sports' history at the school. The talkers won five firsts, one second, three thirds and one fourth in their outings. if Opening the season at Pittsburg, the team record was twenty-seven wins and ten losses. Bob Kim- ball and Tracy Luke entered the semifina' but were defeated by Muskogee, Oklahoma, thus the first place of the year was a third. The follo I g week at Topeka, the largest two-man team tournament in the state, Wyandotte debaters Luke afid Kimball again entered the semifinal rounds. After disposing of Winchester, the Bulldogs met Hutchinson in the finals. Hutchinson was defeated for a first place, the first of five. V Shifting into high gear, Mr. Leonard Jensen's crew moved into Atchison on November 21. Here the W debaters took a first in the inexperienced division and a second in the experienced bracket. After a two-week lay-off the team failed to place at Shawnee Mission but came back strong the following week to win third at E1 Dorado. At William Chrisman the Canines again failed to dent the win column. In the first tournament of the new year, novicedebaters Marilyn Priest and Ron Cummines walked away from their competition at Olathe to win first. The next day at Emporia Cummines again aided the Wyan- dotte cause as he helped win a third. January 24 marked a memoriable day for the debaters and their school as they closed the season in a blaze of triumph. With Mr. Jensen splitting his squad he won first at a tournament at Nplth Kansas and his entries in the regional tournament brought the district title to Wyandotte for the, first time in ten years. A week later at the state finals Wyandotte placed fourth. It was the first times since 1948 the Canines had placed in the state tourna- ment. Representing Wyandotte in the regional and state tournaments were Luke and Kimball on the negative, and John Ball and Charles Shanklin on the affirmative. Resolved, That the Atlantic Pact Nations should form a Federal Union was the topic. Although the Canines could muster plenty of speed and hustle, the lack of experience proved to be the only restraining factor. Featuring one of the fastest backlields in the state and a hard charging line, the Bulldogs blew open their 1952 season with a bombshell of enthusiasm and hustle, dumping Central 26-6. In the initial win Erank Gritton, rolling up 160 yards from scrimmage, established himself as one of the best backfield men in the area. In the second encounter the orchids went to the queen but not to the team as Shaw- nee's Indians edged the Ellismen 6-0 in the homecoming thriller. Smarting from the first defeat after a win streak of eleven straight games and determined to unleash their scoring power, the Canines invaded Leavenworth and left the fort with a 33-0 victory in their hip pockets. Journeying to the capital city the following week, the team met with their second defeat of the year. Topeka took its homecoming tilt 21-7. Again angry over the loss, the Bulldogs returned home to wait for Argentine. Playing the role of a sleeping giant against Argentine, the Canine offense remained virtually silent for three quarters before it unleased the fury of a typhoon and a barrage of thirty-eight points in the final minutes to whip the Mustangs 51-6. With the Sunflower league championship already in the hands of Topeka, Emporia and Wyandotte battled it ,out for second and third place on October 24. Dave Carson, fleet halfback, carried the brunt of the attack as the Spartans succumbed 20-0. It was shortly after this defeat that Emporia resigned from further competition in the league. Seven days later, in preparation for the Lawrence game still a week 05, the Canines beat their second Missouri oppenent of the year, Kansas City East, 13-0. Next all eyes were turned to the contest with the Lions on November 5. Wyandotte gridsters set as their primary aim the winning of the game and as their secondary goal the stopping of the university town's sensational fullback, Charlie McCue. Although the Canines battled the Lawrence crew on even terms, in the first half and even though the line was successful in stopping the fullback, experience proved to be too much for the Bulldogs as Lawrence settled down in the last half and stopped the home team 26-6. With the mythical city cham- pionship resting on the outcome of the Ward game, the next contest on the schedule, Wyandotters spent the remaining practices polishing for their cross-town rivals. In registering the 19-0 win the Bulldogs added the mythical city title to their Sunflower league second place. Playing the last game of the year with a twang of winter in the air on November 21, the Canines were upset by Salina 19-6, bringing to a close Wyandotte Football,.Edition 1952. Frank Gritton and Andy Sevick were the co-ca ptains. Assisting Mr. Ellis in the coaching chores were Carter Burns, backlieldg Dick Channell, line, and Rex Hoy, general assistant. Burns took over the helm as head basketball coach at Wyandotte. Aggressive, but green with inexperience, the Canines embarked on a rugged, nineteen-game schedule featuring the best competition in Kansas. Teams as Shawnee Mission, Argentine, Wichita North, Topeka and Parsons were all included. Fooling all the dopesters, the Bulldogs won over Fort Scott in the first game of the season 78-27, to start the most amazing and surprising campaign in the school's history. In the opening encounter, the Burnsmen served notice to all comers that this year's team was one which was to hold surprises for many teams. Traveling to Leavenworth the following night, the Canines again showed strong early season balance and form as they routed the Pioneers 70-44. Harry Jett, potent W forward, and Bill Bennett, a junior forward, paced the winners. Next the Canines encountered Shawnee Mission. The Indians had finished second in the state in '52 and carried three returning starters. Playing on the Missionite's court, lack of experience proved to be the only restraining factor as it took the home team, their own court, and an overtime to defeat the Bulldogs 62-58. This was the curtain raiser of a never-to-be-forgotten series. Smarting from the defeat, the Canines returned home to dump South- west 63-45 the next night. Thus started a long winning streak. Victories over Argentine, North Kansas City, Topeka, Emporia and Ward followed in close succession. During the torrid victory campaign, starters Jett, Ben- nett Don Kukuk, Ray Johnson and Ed Kohler never let up as they rapidly gained experience, polish, poise and a will to win. Kukuk proved himself one of the finest ball handlers in the state, Jett and Bennett were a top notch one-two scoring punch, while Johnson and Kohler aided the devel- oping fastbreak with a smooth floor game. In the middle of the victory march the Canines traveled to'Salina for an invitational toumament. In the opening game, with a number of Wyandotte fans on hand, the powerful Kansas City, Kansas, crew trimmed Winfield 54-37. The next night in the finals the Bulldogs played one of their finest games of the year. Combining a rolling man-for- man defense with superior ball handling to overcome a Parsons full-court press, the Canines brought the first invita- tional tournament championship to Wyandotte. Score of the final tilt was 69-58. Returning to the home court the victorious basketeers were now listed second only to powerful Shawnee Mission in jayhawkland high school basketball. Pouring on the steam again the red-hot W team sank Rosedale 70-37 with Jett pumping the buckets for twenty-six points. One of the top tests of the season for the Bulldogs moved into town on February 7. The Wichita North Redskins, with their 6 feet, 6 inch center, Herb Coin, never took the lead as a determined band of Bulldogs marched to their tenth straight win in a thrilling battle which ended 58-53. The potent combination of Mr. Big and Mr. Little Q Jett and Kukukj was the difference. Still. surging on the win path, Topeka, Lawrence and Emporia all fell before the scorching Canine offense and tight defense. Next came Argentine. With a berth in the Topeka Regional Tournament and the city title hanging in the balance, thirty-five hundred spectators jammed the Wyandotte gyrnqArgentine, determined to avenge an earlier de- feat, bore down and piled up a 25-20 halftime advantage. A fired up band of Bulldogs returned to the court to begin the second half. Unleashing a drum-tight full-court press and a barrage of points the W crew saw the Mustangs wilt and then fade completely in the third quarter. Wyandotte went on to win 42-39. ' Shawnee Mission invaded the Bulldog lair three days later to take on the Canines who by now were first ranked in the state. Wyandotte's win streak was stopped at fourteen as the Indians again defeated Wyandotte 44-39. The following week-end Ward was beaten as the Bulldogs hit the comeback trail.. The next five games will probably never be forgotten by Wyandotte fans. Journeying to the Topeka Regional Tournament the Canines blasted Atchison 88-65 in the first round, with all-state Harry Jett breaking his previous record of 26 as he swished 33 points through the nets. The next night in the finals the wonder team disposed of High- land Park to get the nod to travel to the state finals in Manhattan. In the first round against Coffeyville the Canines paid little attention to the Tornadoes two all-staters. Jerry Nugent and Kukuk ball-hawked the Southeast Kansans to death while Jett set a new field house record for Class AA by cooly scoring 28 points. Wichita North was next. With a large number of students on hand for the semi-final tilt Wyandotte downed North in another hair-raiser 56-55. Now it was on to the finals. Shawnee Mission had come through in their bracket. Grimly determined not to be edged out for the second year in a row, the Missionites again put the Indian sign on the Bulldogs and won the state championship finals 49-40. . The season was over. Only one team all year long defeated the Wyandotte crew, and that was Shawnee Mission, the state champion. Coach Burns and his team have created an amazing record. The returning lettermen were Captain Richard Brownrigg, John Curry, Paul Wesley, all seniors, and Jim Shearer, a junior. The Waterdogs opened the season against a power-laden Wichita North squad in the Wyandotte pool. Although the Norrismen were ham- pered by the lack of experience, they tied the Redskins 33-33. Wyandotte firsts were pulled down by Curry, Shearer, and Brownrigg. Taking on Wichita East, the Canines, dropping a 31-35 count, met with their first defeat of the season. The Norrismen overcame an early East lead and retained it until the final relay, when the Blue Aces over- came the W advantage to notch the win. Playing the role of an unruly host, the Bulldogs took the measure of the Wentworth Military Academy 36-30, on January 21. Next, journeying to Wichita for a pair of meets there with North and East, the Canines lost to North 32-34 in one of the most thrilling en- COACH NORRIS counters of the year. At East the Swimmers came out on the wrong end of a 40-26 score. Retuming home and seeking revenge, the mermen hoppedi on Topeka and drowned the Trojans 49-26. Victories followed over Wentworth at the military school and Kemper in a night meet at Wyan- dotte. Next, only Coffeyville, defending state champion, and Topeka remained on the schedule. The Canines dropped the meet to Coffeyville, but wound up the regular season by dumping Topeka again. Playing host to the state meet February 28, the Bulldogs pulled one of the biggest upsets of the year. In spite of their lack of experience Norris's crew edged out Wichita East for second place, to finish a most successful season. ToM TIMOTHY Started in the early 1920's as an interscholastic sport, tumbling was abandoned during the 1930's and '40's. In 1947 Mr. Orville McHenry revived the sport at Wyandotte. Since then, the tumblers have developed their sport to more than just a spot of recognition at Wyandotte. The tumblers, although they no longer compete with other schools, now give a number of exhibitions every year. Most of the exhibitions thrill the spectators at half time of home basketball games. In their practices and exhibitions, the tumblers exhibit their ability as acrobats of the first degree as well as building their own co-ordination and skill. This year's squad was led by Senior Captain Jerry Raw. 6 2. Wm sql ' X 13- ,,..p? , wal? ,Q- ..,, M.-nnl L..M..., My- Ml is 'ffsfigg I . ,M , 7 wk P , 5 V? Let's turn back the hands of time to our Freshman year. That year was like a carnival inside a big, red, brick building. At the end of that year, we were still mystified, and above all we were still under- classmen. A summer went by and our Sophomore year rolled around. For many of us that was the year of years. New faces were seen coming in from the junior Highs and during that Sophomore year, our coming Senior class was born. A hectic, wild, wonderful year was in store, and we lived every minute of it. The Spring Spree, our class party, highlighted the year as we graduated from our role of under- classmen. One more step was reached in our ladder of achievement. Now do you remember our feeling of maturity as Juniors? We were upperclassmen, and we made sure everyone knew it. Another year of parties, studies, games and full time recreation turned into Spring. Then we had our Junior Class Party, the Shamrock Shufiie. Our pride at receiving the robe in the as- sembly, we shall never forget. We now had the responsibility of leading all classes at Wyandotte and upholding all standards, a big goal to live up to! We had to have the biggest, best, and above all, finest Senior Class that Wyandotte ever produced. Before entering into Senior leadership, we climaxed our Junior year by choosing our class ring, which everyone was proud to wear. And now we have almost reached that goal, the goal which we have worked for and cherished since a Freshman. The sadness which is also linked with happiness hangs in the air, in our talk and in our looks. Yes, we all had fun at the Prom and class party, but these happy thoughts drop from our minds as we realize we are leaving, never to return, as a real part of the school's activities. We try to justify our feelings of sadness by thinking of all the excitement of graduation festivities and then graduation itself, which will not only be inspiring to us but to others. Nevertheless, we wonder what comes after gradua- tion? ,Many of us will attend college, some will work, while others will marry. As we go our different ways, we will never forget all of our good times at Wyandotte.
