NOT SHOWN IN PICTURE: Bette Sue Carpenter, The Student Council, led by President Dean Graves, Vice-President Darrell Stubenrauch, Secretary Dan Kratzer, and Treasurer Harry Jett, has as its members one representative from each homeroom. These members are kept busy selling tickets, collecting money, and serving on committees throughout the entire year. Each year something new is brought to Wyandotte through their work. This year many students enjoyed dancing during the last ten minutes of their lunch eriods on Wednesdays. The Student Council arranged and sponsored this activity which was dbne in the hall between the two cafeterias. Besides finding new ways of improvingand helping Wyandotte and her students, the Student Council sponsored all of its annual activities. High in popularity were the mixers, which were held in the girls and boys gym, after football and basketball games. Various orchestras supplied the music. Collaborating with the Kay Cees, it also sponsored the Home-coming Dance. Not only does the Student Council provide entertainment for Wyandotte students, but it gives aid to less fortunate children by collecting money for food for the Orphan 's Home and money for the Junior Red Cross. Much praise for her helpful work goes to the Council sponsor, Miss Stapleton, who had an active part in all that was carried on in the l95l-52 Student Council. I., L, N. V The firstactivity of the year for the graduating class of T952 was the traditional senior play, which, this year, was Our Miss Brooks. During the rest of the year, the class enioyed the Senior Hi-Ball, and under the guidance of its sponsor, Mr. Lester Cross, became busy in preparation for graduation with announcements, pictures, and the graduation breakfast. The class of 482 students was capably led through a successful senior year by its officers and Mr. Cross. This year's class of sophomores was ably led by its staff of officers and its sponsor, Mr. Francis Swaim. The sophomore party in February was the climax of the year. For the first time sophomore cheerleaders were elected to assist the cheering section at sophomore and reserve team activities. The 578 class members found the arrangement to be very successful . 16 T to tal- high- LEFT 'ri C class class lr office Dubir Toget these SENIOR CLASS j CLASS senior play , enjoyed the busy in The and Mr. 1' T as Ft I e 4. Miss Louise Timmer, class sponsor, aided the officers in planning interesting activities for their class. One of the most successful parties at Wyandotte was the juniors' St. Patrick's Day Party, March l4. This class boasts equally as much, ifnot more, talent than any other class at Wyan- dotte. Proof of this was given in the Hi-Y Talent Show this year at which a large number of the performers were juniors. After winding up one of the happiest years of school life, this class of 6l9, ffully prepared Bill Bennett, presidentg Y sponsor, Mr. the first time re and reserve -essful . to take on theirduties and responsibilitiesj, anxiously looks ahead to the long-awaited year of high-school graduation. 1 LEFT TO RIGHT: Jerry Heeter, Sally King, Miss Hughes, Natalie Dubin, Roy Lynnes. To be able to express one's self well in life is a goal that everyone should acquire. This might be a motto for any debate team, not only to wiin but to develop enthusiasm and good s eech. P lf ou ha pen to see someone with papers, pencils, quote cards, and books on conscription aroundfthe library or Wyandotte halls, no doubt it will be the Wyandotte debaters. This year the debate team was made up of Courtney Nason, Edith Sortor, Bob Kimball, Tracy Luke, Janet Rawlins, Martha Bolze, John McGregor, Charles Shanklin, Carol Patton, Carey Muncy, Pat Mermegis,Marion Hawk, Bill Mullins, Keith McPherson, and John Ball under the direction of Coach Leonard Jenson, At the beginning of the season the debaters spent many hours doing research work on the question: Resolved--That all American citizens should be subject to conscription for essential service in time of war, On November 9-T0 the debaters traveled to Pittsburg but failed to place. The following week they received an invitation to the Topeka Tournament but again were unsuccessful , Traveling next to Atchison, the debaters went in with full swing determined to go to the finals. This time they captured not one but two second place trophies. On December 7th Coach Jensen sent his first year debaters to Olathe . Wyandotte, losing to ShawneeMission, again went to the finals but came in second, ln the William Chrisman Tournament of December T4-15, Wyandotte was once again eliminated. The annual Wyandotte Tournament was held January ll-I2 when Wyan- dotte WGS host to 26 schools. A5 the usual procedure wqgl the Wyandotte debaters did not compete for the trophies. For the last competition in invitational tournaments, Coach Jensen sent participants to both the North Kansas City and Emporia Tournaments, The regional tournament was held at Lawrence where Wyandotte met outstanding schools but did not win enough debates to go to the finals. Throughout the debate season the debaters gained not only experience but knowledge, self confidence, and poise. The team revealed its in- tentions in the opener with Centraland accomplished its aim in the seasonal close at Ward Stadium. Boasting a hard-charging, powerful line in correlation with a fast, versatile backfield, the Canines were not contentwith City and Sunflower League titles butwent on to become the mythical champions of the state, After defeating Central 34-6, a resolute Bulldog squad pushed on to overcome the jinx of four straight set-backs by the Shawnee Mission Indians I9-6, Leavenworth's hopes for an all-state team were abruptly shattered when a wet field proved an asset to the Bulldog contenders as the final score tallied I4-7. A stubborn Topeka team was defeated I3'O which gave Argentine the next futile attempt to stop the title-bound Canines, A keyed-up herd of Mus- last quarter, making the score 20-13. The SL1f1f10W6I League title was cinched when the Bulldogs powered to a 24-6 victory over the Emporia Spartans, The reserves saw a lot of action as the Ellismen easily defeated Salina 42-7 in a driving snowstorm, As Wyandotte ,and Lawrence were the only two un- defeated class AA teams in the state, all eyes were turned to this top prep school game of the year. Nine thousand people saw Wyandotte score twice in the early minutes of the ball game--once on a beautifully executed Logs- don-to-Wallace pass. The second score came after Driver had knifed through and blocked a Lawrence punt. Logsdon passed twenty-seven yards to Wallace, and on the next play, Emerson Wilson drove off-tackle for fourteen yards and a touchdown, The rest of the game saw the Bulldogs in a terrific battle to hold their lead while Lawrence fought vainly to retain their perfect record. tangs finally succumed to a two-touchdown splurge in the BACK ROW: Line Coach Dick Channell, John Zupanac, Jack Corbett, Dan Kratzer, Lloyd Cotter, Darrell Stubenrauch, Ned Holmes, HarryJett, Allen Goepfert, Clarence Teters, Andy Sevick, Willie Lombrano, Backfield Coach Carter Burns. This mark is not particularly impressive nor is it a true measure of the ability of the team. They were never outclassed even though they played the toughest competition in the state. The Woolsmen opened their season against Hutchinson and had no trouble finding the range as they easily subdued the Salthawks 38-30. The next five games saw Wyandotte remain onthe undefeated ledger as they rolled over Leaven- worth, Southwest, Argentine, Topeka, and Rosedale. The next game was the first in a series of heartbreakers which were to plague the hoopsters all season, When the final gun went off to favor a red hot Ward team that just couldn't seem to miss the basket the score read 48-49. The team rebounded the following week and topped a good Em- poria five to the count of 57-50. The Bulldogs won the next game by forfeit when it was found that Wichita North was using an ineligible player. The cagers split even on a trip to Pittsburg and Fort Scott . Pittsburg took a cold Wyandotte aggregation to the tune of 39-45 which caused Coach Marion Wools to field an entirely different starting five the fol lowing night. This change seemed to do the iob as Fort Scott found themselves on the low end of a 55-39 score at the end of the contest. The next weekend found the hoopsters iourneying to the Invitational Tournament at Wichita North. This trip proved somewhat short of successful as the Bulldogs lost a thriller to Emporia, 47-49, and were edged out in the consolation game 47-48. Glenn Boyer was the standout in both contests as he displayed some of the most uncanny shooting ever witnessed ona prep-school court, while collecting i7 and I8 in the two games. The Red and White marched back into the win column the following night as they snowed under Lawrence with a 58 point barrage, while holding the losers to 37. A real test came when Wyandotte met Shawnee Mission. The lndians were rated the top in Kansas according to the Associated-Press poll, and proved their superiority in registering a 51-59 victory over a fighting band of Bulldogs. However, according to Bob Johnson, Shawnee Coach, our quintet was the toughest his boys met all season. Canning ll points and playing great defensive ball, Gary Gaunce played his best game of the year for the Bulldogs. A tall Argentine team withstood a terrific second half comeback waged by the Bulldogs as they edged out a 51-52 win. Turning in an excellent floor game, Dean Graves was a big factorin the rally. Rosedale ended up on the short end of a 56-41 decision in a very unspectacular game played at Wyandotte. Avenging the loss to the Cyclones earlier in the season, the Woolsmen iumped to an early lead and stayed ahead . Harry Jett was the feature attraction of the Ward game as the iunior forward collected I2 points and set a newWyan- dotte record of 22 recoveries. , The beautiful rebounding of Ned Holmes and the brilliant iump shots of Doyle Mathia were almost too much for the lndians from Shawnee Mission in a crowd-pleaser that found Shawnee winning by the narrow margin of 32-29. ' At the time of this writing we are wishing the Bulldogs the best of luck in the Regional Tournament at Topeka. By virtue of winning the Regionals, the basketeers would recieve an invitation to the State Tourney to be held at the new Kansas-State fieldhouse . , 'ya x HARRY IETT Junior-Forward MARION WOOLS Coach it l. This year was Delvin Norris's first year as swimming coach, gif ' . fy' 4 li, and he did a great iob. The boys started conditioning in Novem- ber and, under the abletuteledge of Coach Norris, progressed ra idl . P Thle Tanksters opened their season with their annual inter- squad meet. This was followed by Wichita North and Emporia which they defeated by identical scores of 42-25. One of the closest dual meets of the year ended in a 36-30 decision over Wichita East. The next two appearances made by the Finmen found them taking the measures of Wentworth and Topeka, 58-8 and 44-2l respectively. A trip to Wichita the following week was a great success as the Bulldog swimmers ,edged past Wichita North 3l-35, and dunked East 37-29. Upon returning home, the team found themselves faced with three meets in the next five days. They splashed past our two out-state foes-- Wentworth 58-6, and Kemper 39-27. The Tanksters finished a busy week at Topeka where they defeated the Troians 42-15. Four years ago Coffeyville defeated the Waterdogs here in our pool. This event started a chain of victories which led them to five successive state championships and a string of 47 consecutive victories. The victory string was snapped this year by the Bulldogs in the same pool in which it started by a score of 42 to 24. The final dual meet with Emporia ended with a 50-T5 rout over the Spartans and climaxed the most successful season the Bulldog swimming team has had in many a year. rf .4 , , - 2' ' . , nf! 5 2 1 , f 1' ' ' . I don't actually know why, but as each senior received his diploma, Iwas wondering how he felt about it. l was excited but not in the way which I had expected. lt's something you can't explain to others, something that makes you feel sad inside. Now I could barely hear the names being called or see the faces of my friends, all I could think about was the cold mornings I hated to come to school, the thrill of seeing someone in my class, the noise in social hall, and the smiles of my friends. Every once in awhile I could feel a tear running down my cheek, maybe it was because I remembered what good times I had had in the four years at Wyandotte or maybe I was scared to look at the future. When we first entered Wyandotte as freshmen, it was really a thrill. We looked up to those seniors and admired them, but we were bewildered by the size and confusion of everything. Then came 1950, our sophomore year. We felt more at ease now, and wanted to do our part to make this year successful. Centrallunior and Northwest Junior High Schools joined us to make the largest class at Wyandotte. The most outstanding event this year was the Shoe Schuffle Party, which proved a big success. We could hardly be- lieve that two years had passed, but we were enthusiastic at the fact that we were going to be upperclassmen. In our Junior year we gave our full support to all the organizations and became loyal Wyandotte boosters. We had another grand turnout at the party The Thing. At the end of the year, while we wished the seniors luck, we started choosing our rings and realized we were going to have to take over in full swing, In looking over our events at Wyandotte we will always remember our senior year especially, maybe, because it 'wasour lastyear, or because it proved so successful. One will never forget the Senior Play Our Miss Brooks, which was held Nov. I4-I5, IQSI. It seemed that so many things were happening that one couldn't keep up with all the activities and social whirl at Wyandotte. In January we held our senior party The Hi-Ball, then spring was here. We knew that we had to say farewell to the halls of Wyandotte. Those last few weeks are memories to all of us with National Honor Society initiation, Senior Prom, Baccalaurate, Senior Breakfast and now tonight the class of 52 must part. Suddenly, I heard my name being called. It startled me for a moment, and I felt as if I wanted to turn back. But I knew I cou1dn't go back, so Iwent on just as I'll go on in life. When I reached the platform and had received my diploma, I was feeling proud of the fact that graduation was here and I was considered an adult, but Iwas scared of leaving the friends I had made at Wyandotte. We've often dreamed of today but now it's here--GRA DUATION-- you're on your own, Is it college for you or that job you've always wanted? Anyway, you can't turn baclzg you must go on in life. ' . Looking over the crowd, seeing the happy parents, and seeing all the seniors with their caps and gowns, you can see sadness, but yet you can tell each wants to take his own road toward happiness, LETS LOOK AT THEY FUTURE BY THE EDITORS 0 Our I962 summer vacation begins in sunny California where We've made reservations in the Breidenthal Arms. Doorman Gary Wait greets us as we enter and shows us to the desk where the clerk, Ronald Logan, registers us. Our bags are taken by bellboys Sleepy Holmes and One-shot Boyer. Our p to our floor, and as we leave the elevator, we pass those two noted scholars, Dorothy Milam and Janice Van Boskirk, Upon reaching our room, we find the chamber maid, Rachael Ramirez, do some last-minute cleaning, She explains that the last tenants Bubbles Bennett and Dimples Deichler, Broadway showgirls, had just checked out. ln the bath- room we find janitor Ed Placke trying to fix a leak in the plumbing. As we enter the dining room in the evening, headwaiter Jim DeGoler escorts us to our table where our dinner order is taken by the chef himself, Jess Driver, We recognize Jane Bartling, Sharon Strom, and Connie Sims working as cigarette girls, During the dinner hour, music is provided by Marcum's Music Men and vocalists Dwayne Clark and Patsy O'Loughlin. Participating in the floor show is the comedy team of John Day and Jerry Davies, the Hageman, Heath, and Hiatt vocal trio, and the apache dancers, Tom Howard and Darlene Blanchard. Bill Mullins is acting as emcee, The next morning, before checking out, we decide to have our hair set at the Bridgens Beauty Salon where Beany Wilson, Paul French, Dave Dillon, and Face Nixon are working as hair stylists while Betty Helm and Bernice Nasternak are employed as manicurists. Later, as we are checking out, we are bid adieu by hotel owner Dick Breidenthal and one of the hotel's permanent residents, Betty Billingsley, Outside the hotel we hail a Christy Cab which is driven by a giggly driver named Speed Teters. Shortly, we find ourselves pulling up in front of the Attebery Airport where we catch our plane for New York, We are introduced to the pilots Shipley and Weaver and to the hostess Edith Sortor. fShe wasn't much of a conversationalist.j Soon our plane lands at Fagan Field in N.Y., and before long we are walking down Fifth Avenue. We pass the Burton Barber Shop, the Tracy Tea Room, the Richards Radio Corporation, Charmie Schlegel's School for Depressed Debutanes and a very exclusive dress shop owned by Misses Cheri Matthews, Lenore Hahn, and Elaine Hoffman, where Josephine Vardyan, Sadie Rash, and Peggy Simpson are models. In Dutcher's Department Store we find Dave Kane selling elevator shoes while John Yatsook demonstrates crutches. Floorwalker Ralph Wallace calls our attention to the new counter where Kittie Moore, Frances Meng, Betty Bentz, and Bev Barnett are slinging hash while home economics expert Carol Antic oversees the job. As we are leaving the store, newsboy Dean Graves sells us a copy of the Leondedis Limited. The robbery of the Jaskotlewelry Store by Gargotta Gaunce, Binaggio Johnson, and Pretty-Boy Logsdon headlines the front page, The gangsters shot bystander Bob Flowers after he attemped to protect salesclerk Marlene Barber when the hoodlums tried to force her to open the safe. In Hedda Kepler's social gossip column we read about a dinner party given at the Mannigan House by debutanesJune Whistler, Darlene Jackson, and Pat Buckles, On the guest listwere socialites Waters, Gaffney, Algie, Mclnteer, Hamilton, and Tyler. Entertainment was provided by Met Star Virginia Joiner, who was accompanied on the uke and harp by George Ira and Melva Winterringer respectively, Glancing farther down the page. we discover that Shirley Jackson has been chosen MiSS Whistlebait of I962 while Beverly Childers was named Mother of the Year. Scanning the sports page, we note that Sedlock's Sluggers have signed Speed-ball Colston, Homerun Bauer, and Rag-arm Chushuk for the coming season at Early Field, According to columnist Jim Hathaway, One- Play Emerson Wilson and Snap-back Bishop will be playing pro footballonjohn Pierce'swesternall-star team next season, As for home-town news, it seems that fix-it Kubicki and Lubrication Ladesic have opened the most modern garage in K.C,, and their chief mechanics are Ken Morris and Eugene Sostarich. Next on our itinerary is a visit to that famous night club Jim Smith's Diamond Horseshoe, where Terry Nelson is a hat-check girl. Appearing here with Hot Lips Nickerson's band is torch-singer Rosie Hernandez. Some of the celebraties we notice as we look around are movie starsjanis Johanson, Shirley Look, Florence Chase, Peggy Kitchin, and JoAnn Kitterer, playwrite Bob Mayer, and lady wrestlers Choker Cigich, Strangler Fyock, and Ferocious Fendorf. Just as we are leaving, club photographers Doyle Mathia and Ann Pliley snap our picture. The interesting stories Bonnie Petsch and Jerry Boyer relate to us about their hunting experiences in Africa make our trip homeward very pleasant, Soon we arrive in K.C.. and waiting at the airport is a delegation of our friends who have come to welcome us home. Even Mayor Courtney Nason, Judge Marion Hawk, foreign news correspondent Alton Davies, and TV announcer John Napiecek are present. Yes, our vacation has ended but it's great to be home, 83 101111 Aldridge Ann Algie Mary Anna Allison Vera Amick Lois Andersen Benny Anderson Bob Anderson Janis Anderson Carol Antic .
