The future is ahead. Just one giant step away. And though it takes a lot of courage. We come closer every day. Our dreams now stretch before us, The years have passed like the setting sun. Our thoughts are filled with memories. And of goals not yet begun. And as we reach out for our goals. And wish upon that falling star. We know dreams really can come true, And our goals are not very far. Our future is now the center of attention, And we remember, as our anxieties begin to rise. There is no unattainable goal, As long as we believe and continue to try. A. Kirkpatrick 3 IN MEMORIAM The years have slipped away. Our high school days are gone, But our fond memories are touched with sadness When we think of our departed friends. Each life met a tragic ending As always they were much too young to die. We ll always remember these three And never say good-bye. We'll go upon our separate ways Our lives will drift apart. Their faces are upon our minds Their spirits in our hearts. As we think of days gone by. those happy high school times, we ll all remember Steve. Joey and Jean and the smile they left behind. BROWN April 2, 1988 EDWARD RHODES April 3, 1988 VOLLEYBALL The 1987 edition of Lady Rams volleyball experienced its share of excitement as well as a good dose of disappointment. Led by experienced players, the girls just couldn't seem to find the consistency they needed to put together a winning season. Overlooking their 5-12 record, the Lady spikers established some impressive statistics in a league that for the fifth straight year has sent two teams to the state Tournament. Led by senior Kathy Horne’s 92 kills, the team tallied 408 kills to set a new school record and placed them high in that category. Three girls (Horne. Sherri Stanton, and Ricki Smith) scored in triple figures in service points. This years team also placed two girls on the NTL All-Stars. Kathy Horne was named 2nd team Middle Hitter while team mate Marcey Franklin was named 2nd team defensive specialist. Other members of the team receiving Honorable Mentions to the All-Star team were seniors Sherri Stanton. Sandy Cook, and Marcey Zurn and junior Ricki Smith. The 1987 WVHS varsity football team completed the grid season, with an overall record of 3-7. including a NTL mark of 3-5. The ’87 Rams faced an unusually tough schedule, in that two of their opponents. Montoursville (AAA) and Canton (A), ended up as District 4 Champions, in their respective divisions. Still another Wyalusing opponent. Athens, finished as a District 4 runner-up. while two others. Troy and Towanda. also qualified for the district playoffs, following the ‘87 campaign. The Rams opened the season with close losses to Sayre. Athens. West Perry and Troy, before hitting the win column, with successive victories over Hughesville (10-7) and Wellsboro (43-6). The locals then suffered one-sided defeats, to NTL champion Canton and Montoursville. before rebounding with a very satisfying 13-13 win. over a favored Montrose squad. Then, in the season finale, the Rams played well, against archrival Towanda. before finally suc-combing by a 19-8 margin. Individually, the Rams got some solid performances from several of their players, including senior tailback Craig Minetola. who rushed for 631 yards, and a 4.9 average. In addition, senior tight end Shawn McClain hauled in 19 passes, for 350 yards. while junior Q. B. Mark Woodruff threw for over 500 yards. Also, sophomore Eric Driggs proved to be one of the better place-kickers in the area, nailing lOof 13 extra point attempts, and 3 field goals, while junior Fred Frisbie returned 13 kickoffs, for 338 yards, and a 16 yard average. The Rams leading scorer, in 1987. was senior fullback Gary Otis, with 30points, and he also led the defensive unit in tackles and assists, from linebacker position. The Rams were coached once-again by Ray Raff in. who was assisted on the varsity level, by Dave Beh rend and Line Welles. The Ram JV coaches were Jeff Adams and Jay Warner. The WVHS cross country squad finished the 1987 season, with a fine overall record of 10-3. In NTL competition, the Rams had an 8-2 mark, good for a third place finish in the league. The '87 Ram boys racked up wins over Sullivan County (twice). Canton. Liberty. Athens. Wellsboro. Mansfield. Sayre. SRU and Northeast Bradford, while losing to Montrose. Troy and the NTL champions. Towanda. Individually, the Rams had the best NTL runner, in junior David Howard. Howard sailed through the regular season undefeated, and then took first place at the NTL Meet, in Towanda. In post-season competition. Howard finished in fourth place, at the District 4 Meet, and then, two weeks later, he was twenty-fourth. overall, at the P.I.A.A. State Meet, held at Penn State University. For his efforts. Howard was named the NTL Male Runner of the Year.” and he was also selected to the Coaches' All-NTL First Team. Several other members of the boys cross country team also had good seasons. Seniors Steve Naspinski and Calvin Thomas were both named to the Coaches’ All-NTL Second Team, while senior Bernie Kisner finished tenth, overall, at the District 4 Meet. The Lady Ram harriers, meanwhile, completed the 1987 campaign with an overall record of 7-6 (5-5 NTL). giving them their first winning season in several years. The Ram girls scored victories over Sullivan county (twice). Canton. Liberty. Sayre. SRU and Northeast-Bradford. while losing to Wellsboro. Mansfield. Athens. Montrose. Towanda and NTL champion Troy. Individually, the Lady Rams were led by sophomores Sue Naspinski and Dawn Ahern, both of whom were named to the Coaches' All-NTL Second Team, at season's end. After playing a tough exhibition schedule, they were ready for Northern Tier League play with a 4-3 record. Two of those losses were to District 12 AAA Champions Montrose. The girls pro ceeded to win their first three league games and then lost 57-40 to eventual NTL champions, the Troy Trojans. When they won their next three games, they thought they had battled back to tie for first half honors only to discover Towanda had to forfeit their win over Troy because of a league rule limiting the use of a player to only six quarters per night. During second half action, the girls won their first two games before going into a slump and losing three in a row. They rebounded to win their final two games over Northeast and Athens to culminate their season. This years squad was led by a very good group of senior players. Marcey Zurn and Bette Knolles provided most of the scoring punch averaging 14.9 and 14.8 point pe gam espec- tively. Eileen Ottaviani stepped in and provided the team with capable leadership from the point guard position. Elisha Driggs also gave the team a good effort, usually as the first person off the bench. She averaged 5 points and 7 rebounds per game in this role and generally did an excellent job for the team this year. Juniors on the squad were Judy Huffman. Diane Mapes. Lori Shirk. Michelle Bradish. and Karen Smith. Huffman was the teams third leading score averaging 6.1 points per game and the second leading rebounder with an 8.4 per game average. Sophomore Dawn Ahern and freshman Stacy Putnam rounded out the squad as they split time between the JV and Varsity teams. Boys Basketball Led by Senior captain Jeff Carr, the Ram Hoopsters attained their third consecutive winning season with a 14 and II record. The Rams could have had a much better record but for the fact that they lost eight of those games by seven points or less. The Rams foul shooting and costly turnovers hurt in those games. Offensively the Rams were led by league All-Star Jeff Carr. Carr led the team in points and average (614-24.6). shooting percentage (232-9.3). Two other Seniors figured in team play. They were Trey Taylor who led the team in assists (86-4.3). despite missing five games with an injury, and Marc Dooner who tied for the team lead in steals (53-2.1). The balance of the Ram attack fell on the shoulders of numerous underclassmen. Junior Matt Cusano was second on the team in scoring (187-7.5) and rebounding (154-6.2) while leading the team in foul shooting (64.3%) while Sophomore Eric Driggs finished third in both categories. Junior Matt Cobb and Sophomores Tom Bennett were also instrumental in the Rams limited success as they filled their roles effectively. We will be graduating seven Seniors: Jeff Carr. Trey Taylor. Marc Dooner. Tim Burke. Mike Meteer. Bernie Kisner. and Mike Hemenway. They went through some adversity and they handled it as gentlemen. Through the good times and the bad times they remained loyal to their team and to their teammates. They will be missed because they were simply a good bunch of kids who enjoyed playing the game. This squad may not have pleased everybody. The important part is that they pleased themselves. They always went out and gave it their all. No matter the outcome, they walked with their heads up high ready to face the next challenge. As Mike Meteer said after our last game. The Rams were also able to win a league championship. copping the Northern Tier-East title, for the first time in seventeen years. Fisk, whose two-year mark now stands at 36-9. saw his charges come through with two late-season wins, over Towanda and Athens, to clinch a perfect NTL-East mark of 5-0. Then, to put the finishing touch on a great season, the Rams defeated the NTL-West champion Canton Warriors, by a 36-33 count, in the final dual meet of the year. In addition to their regular schedule, the Rams also participated in two early-season tourneys, at Abing-ton Heights and Windsor (NY), and several WVHS grapplers were able to earn places at each event. Senior co-captain Gary Otis captured an individual title at Abington. while Chris Neuber (3nd), co-captain Calvin Thomas (3rd). Mark Kusmierz (3rd), Shane Spencer (4th) and Scott Epler (4th) also earned places. At the always-tough Windsor Tourney. Otis took a second, while Thomas was fourth, and at 167 lbs. Otis then went on to finish third at the District 4 Meet, and second at the Northeast Region tourney, and thus qualify for the P.I.A.A. State Meet, at the Hersheypark Arena in March. Otis continued to wrestle well at states, just missing out on a place in his final match. Other Rams who placed at the North Section tour ney. in Towanda. were Calvin Thomas (3nd). Chris Neuber (3nd). and Shane Spencer. Chris Comstock Scott Epler and Wiley Moore, all of whom finished in third place. Additional post-season honors went to Gary Otis, Calvin Thomas and Scott Epler. as each was named to the NTL All-Star squad. Otis, whose 89th career win moved him into second place, on the all-time WVHS win list, was named to the all-league first team, while Thomas and Epler were placed on the second-team. Still another wrestling honor was bestowed on Ram Coach Walt Fisk, when his colleagues voted him the North-Section Coach of the Year. — Varsity Wrestlers Back Row (L-R) Calvin Thomas. Scott Epler. Because of graduation and other external factors, coach Gene Salsman had to literally replace the entire starting squad. Not many people gave this team a chance to do anything. But as it often happens, when players get the chance, they perform better than expected. The biggest surprise in a 3-1 exhibition schedule was the Rams hitting. This supposedly light hitting club scored in double figures in all three of those wins. Hopes were up for the N. T. L. opener but the inexperience surfaced as the Rams gave away a 40 decision to Troy. The Rams inconsistency on the mound and in the field turned out to be their worst enemy. Though never losing more than two games in a row. the Rams struggled through the N. T. L. with a 7-7 record to end their regular season at 9-8. Offensively, the Rams were led by senior Trey Taylor who had a .500 average heading into district play. Taylor also led the team with stolen bases as he accumulated 17 thefts while being thrown out only once. The big RBI man was senior Jeff Carr. His .358 average and 20ribbies sparked the team as he was the only Ram in double figures in that department. Other contributing with then bats were seniors Chris Comstock and Tim Burke who batted .333 and .222 respectively and juniors Ed Powers (.362). Mike Nystrand (.270), and Joe Dietz (.239). On the mound, junior David Johnson took on the heavy load. Johnson s 4-4 record is deceiving. He pitched better than his re cord, but with no experience backing him. he had to bear the brunt when the chips were down. There were three other pitchers on the staff but none had seen varsity action until this year. Junior Gordie Bates did well until an injury forced him out late in the year. Freshman Doug Woodruff showed signs of potential in his initial tenure, and sophomore John Mosier pitched brilliantly in his only start of the campaign as he defeated Northeast by a 5-2 count. 35 1988 RAMS Softball Team Back row (l-r) Bette Knolles. We placed second in the league and had the distinction of handing the league winners their only defeat of the season. Coach Anderson also had the thrill of copping her 100th career win this season against the Canton Warriors. Our offense was led by the bats of Judy Huffman (.482), Elisha Driggs (.342), and Kathy Horne (.317). Kathy also had the highest number of RBI's with 21. On base, the heads up running of Krista Goodman netted the team 25 stolen bases. Solid defensive play was sparked in the outfield by some outstanding catches by Bette Knolles and Krista Goodman. Play at home plate was controlled by Kimm Bush. Kimm protected and tagged out runners in games which were both exciting and crucial. Judy Huffman had a record of II wins and 2 losses as our pitcher. She also compiled an earned run average of just 2.65. Judy’s wins included one shut out and two one hitters. The cooperation and play shown by seniors Becky Price (third base), Eileen Ottaviani (second base), and Brenda Remington (outfield) did not go by unnoticed. Everyone had their part in our winning season. The team is losing a total of seven seniors this year but prospects look encouraging for the 1989 season. Most of our returning letter winners and rookies are eager to step in and carry on the tradition of softball at Wyalusing. Bernie Kisner, Shawn McClain, and John Frederick to a 9-2 record and a second consecutive second place conference finish losing only to Wellsboroduring the course of the season. In the process. Frederick broke an II year old school record in the pole vault with a leap of I2’7 . Defeating Montrose. Elk Lake, and Mansfield, the boys ran their winning streak to 13 before bowing the first time to league champs Wellsboro. The Lady Rams paced by Deb Patrick. Sue Kelley, Denise Wheeler. Theresa Colegrove. Lynn Slabicki. and Dawn Ahern improved to a 5-6 record. The N. T. L. Conference Meet, held at S.R.U. High School, the boys finished a distant second to the league’s powerhouse, the Green Hornets of Wellsboro. Bernie Kisner. Steve Naspinski. Dave Bonhamer. and B. J. Barrett teamed up to register the fourth consecutive win in the 3200meter relay showing the N. T. L. why the Rams consider this their” event. Naspinski and Bonhamer also teamed up with Clint Crawford and Craig Minetola to capture the gold in the 1600meter relay with a 3 40.19 clocking. The girls had a long day at the league meet with only the following six girls earning places: Denise Wheeler. Debbie Patrick. Lynn Slabicki. Rachel Binder. Dawn Ahern, and Melanie Flintjer. In addition, several thinclads turned in outstanding performances one week later at the District t$4 Meet, perhaps placing more athletes than in many years. Two school record fell on the Williamsport track. Copping a fourth place finish in the 400 meter relay with a record time of :45.70 were Fred Frisbee. Steve Naspinski. Gary Otis, and Clint Crawford. A few hours later. Naspinski and Crawford teamed up with Craig Minetola and freshman David Bonhamer for yet another record gallop in the 1600 meter relay, coming in with a time of 3:55:60. Other Rams grabbing places at the District Meet were: Dave Howard (4th — 3200m Run). Minetola (5th — 300m Hurdles), and the 3200 meter relay team (6th) made up of Crawford. Naspinski. Howard, and B.J. Barrett. Both teams experienced the winning feeling at the Susquehanna Country Invitational Relays as the boys captured the 1st place trophy outdistancing Afton. NY. Windsor. NY. Susquehanna and Elk Lake. The girls also had there best day as they brought home the 2nd place trophy behind Windsor by only 6 points. G.T.E.
