Kellie Goodman Tamra Jayne 15 SOFTBALL The Lady Rams Softball team began their 1987 season with a win in their first exhibition game over Lackawanna Trail and then lost to Elk Lake. Their year was very successful, however, as they won the Northern Tier League Title for the second year in a row. In the process, the team compiled a fine overall record of 17-3. Sophomore Judy Huffman did a fine pitching job with twelve wins and only one loss. She highlighted the season by pitching a no-hitter over S.R.U. and had a shutout against Northeast. Huffman is an aspiring pitcher who will return next year as a junior. Each girl's performance at the plate contributed to the victorious season. Junior Kathy Horne led the t am with an impressive .500 batting average. Horne also had 39 runs batted in and 6 homers. Senior Tammy Jayne led the team with 35 hits producing a .493 batting average. The bats of Elisha Driggs and Kellie Goodman were also cracking as Driggs had six triples and Goodman 10 doubles for the season. Sophomore Krista Goodman led the team in stolen bases with 46. The team' defensive effort was also noteable. Catcher Tammy Jayne seldom allowed stolerl bases from the opposing team while Krista Goodman's juick action in left field f disappointed some hopeful hitters. The ability and spirit of the seniors will be sorely missed. Kellie Goodman and Tammy Jayne represented the Lady Rams as Co-Captains. Debi Pickett exhibited kound performances while Dana Keeney was hard working and cheered on the team. Newcomer Dana Keblitsch was on the move as the team's utility player. The Lady Rams never let their guard down as they overcame the tough competition in games against Canton, Towanda, and Northeast in the second half of league play. The Lady Rams lost to West Snyder in their first District 4 game and their quest for the District £4 title. Depth! A solid nucleus was returning, but the challenge for a Northern Tier League Title the newcomers had to produce as well. After an unimpressive 3-4 start (2-3 in N.T.L. play), the Rams found themselves in the unenviable position of playing catch up. The Rams had dug themselves into a hole due to anemic hitting and haphazard fielding; two things the squad was expected to do well in. Through those seven games, the Wyalusing bats were hitting under .200 and the opponent's main offense was the Ram's poor fielding. But as any Ram baseball fan knew, the team's woes would eventually end. Since that loss so many games ago, the Rams have streaked through the rest of their league schedule without a loss. Within that thirteen game winning streak, the highlight has to be the 4-3 extra inning victory over the previously unbeaten Athens Bulldogs. During the lucky-thirteen streak, the Rams found out how good they could be. The squad solidified. They played as a team. They executed in the field and at the plate the way Wyalusing baseball teams were expected to do. Without a dominant ace on the squad, the Rams divided their pitching chores very well. Returning lettermen Kevin Ar-mitage and Mark Woodruff were joined by Tracy Brown and David Johnson to give the Rams a very solid staff. Armitage and Woodruff picked up the most wins (5) while the emergence of young Johnson with 1.04 ERA gives the coaching staff hope for the future. The Rams eventually rectified their hitting problems and wound up with a respectable .271 team batting average. Junior Trey Taylor came up with a 5 for 5 performance during the last regular season game to boost his average to an impressive .385 while senior Scott Bennett also went perfect at the plate (4 for 4) to bring his average to .306. Because of the number of at bats however, Kevin Armitage was able to claim top hitting honors for the Rams with a .333 average to go along with his team leading 21 runs batted in. The Rams finished their regular season with a very good 16-4 record, 15-3 in the N.T.L. The second place finish for the Rams marks the first time in three years that Wyalusing has not at least tied for the league championship. A large number of seniors will be lost to graduation this year. We must say goodbye to regulars Kevin Armitage, Scott Bennett, Andy Johnson, Steve Lewis, Ed Robinson, Chris Ruhf, Scott Salsman, and Doug Otis. They have all contributed to the longest running dynasty in Wyalusing sports history. You will be missed and we want to thank you all for being a part of it. Both the boys and girls track teams, although made up largely of underclassmen, made great improvements over a year ago. As with a year ago, few seniors will be lost to graduation thus the underclassmen will provide a good nucleus for next year's squads. The boys, led by seniors Ed Naspinski and Jeff Williams and juniors Clint Crawford and Brett Bennett, finished the season with an unblemished 9-0 mark The boys thinclads registered wins over all 7 N.T.L. teams plus Loyalsock and Montrose to run their winning streak to 10 straight dual meets. In compiling the perfect season, the boys averaged over 100 points while yielding less than 50 points per meet. The Lady Rams paced by junior Janette Slabicki and sophomores Tamie Kipp and Deb Patrick improved to a 3-6 record registering wins over Montrose, Canton, and Sayre At the N.T.L Conference Meet, held at Hughesville High School under sunny spring skies, the boys were disappointed in finishing second to league champs Wellsboro. Steve and Ed Naspinski, Dave Howard, and B. J. Barrett teamed up to show the league why the 3200m relay is the Rams “bread and butter with a thrilling come from behind victory with an 8:28.50 clocking. The only other N.T.L. crown was captured by Brett Bennett in the discus with a heave of 125'0''. The girls claimed only one conference champion in Janette Slabicki's 800m title in a new school record of 2:26.63 which she has since broken. In addition, the following week Ed Naspinski copped District 4 honors in the 1600m run and Janette Slabicki won the girls 800m run qualifying both for the State Track Meet at Shippensburg University Other Rams bringing home ribbons from Williamsport were Dave Howard (4th-3200m run), Jeff Williams (6th-high jump), and Brett Bennett (4th-discus). Another highlight of the day came in the meets' last even as the Naspinski brothers teamed with Mike Mullican and Clint Crawford to set a new school record in the 1600m relay with a brisk time of 3:36.50. RAM GRAPPLERS ’87 Tony Kusmierz Manager: Eileen VanDeMark, Kelly Frisbie Despite a host of inexperience and a rash of early-season injuries, the WVHS wrestlers, under the guidance of first-year head coach, Walt Fisk, completed the 1986-87 season, with an even 3-3 record, in the tough NTL-East Division, wrestled for most of the season with just two seniors, Chris Ruhf and Tony Kus-mierz. Besides their dual-meet slate, the Rams also participated in two early-sea- Chris Ruhf son tournaments, at Abington Heights and Windsor (N.Y.), with junior Gary Otis capturing an individual title, at both events. In post-season, P.I.A.A. tourney action, the Rams recorded a third-place finish, as a team, at the annual North-Section Tourney, at Towanda, with senior Chris Ruhf (Hwt) and sophomore Mark Woodruff (155), each winning an individual championship. Second-place finishers, for Wyalusing, at the Sectional meet, included Calvin Thomas (126) and Gary Otis (176), while Jason Oliver (98) and Craig Minetola (138) took thirds. At 185 lbs., freshman Bill Smith also placed at the Sectionals, finishing fourth. At District 4 Meet, in Williamsport, Gary Otis picked up the Rams' only place, finishing third, and then at the Northeast Regional tourney, also at Williamsport, Otis registered a fourth-place finish. Top individual records, for the 86-87 Rams, were turned in by Gary Otis (29-6), Chris Ruhf (16-12), Mark Woodruff (16-14) and Chris Comstock (14-11) With just two seniors, lost to graduation, it appears that the 87-88 Rams, with ten returning lettermen, could be ready to challenge, once again, for NTL supremacy. Assisting coach Fisk, were JV coach Gary Otis and junior high coach Karl Schnure. For the second year in row the Rams were quite successful on the basketball floor. Led by the inspired play of our six Seniors, the squad compiled a 22-8 record. The 73.3% winning ratio broke last years 72% as the highest won-loss percentage in boys basketball history at W.V.H.S. We were close to the NTL Championship this year as we tied for the first and second half titles. However, we lost both playoff games and had to settle for second place with a 16-4 record. The highlight of the first half was our 54-53 overtime win over Towanda without the services of our point guard Ed Robinson. During the second half the highlight was the 49-48 win over Northeast. This year we went the furthest of any Ram team in the State Tournament. After losing the District Championship to Loyalsock, we advanced into interdistrict play. We defeated Montrose to advance into the Eastern Quarterfinals where we lost to the eventual State Champions, the Columbia Crimson Tide. Offensively this year we had four potent scorers Junior Jeff Carr led the squad in that category (541-18.0). Carr was also the leading shooter (51.3%) from the field as well as from the foul line (67.4%). Senior point guard Ed Robinson led the league in assists (175-11.3) Ed's contribution came to 25.3 points per game. One of the ingredients to our success was our rebounding. Three players hauled down more then 100 rebounds led by Senior Steve Lewis (271 -9.0). As a team we outrebounded our opponents by 6.5 rebounds per game. Four of our Ram hoopsters received individual recognition when Seniors Ed Robinson, Steve Lewis, and Kevin Armi-tage were joined by Junior Jeff Carr on the NTL's All-Star team selected by the coaches. We will be graduating six Seniors; Ed Robinson, Steve Lewis, Kevin Armitage, Jeff Williams, Jerry Casselbury, and Scott Bennett. They will be missed in more ways than just their playing abilities. Due to their efforts, Wyalusing Basketball continued to be a respected force. As long as we continue to produce gentlemen of such caliber, we can all be proud of our basketball team. Led by the exploits of middle blocker Kathy Horne, the Rams tallied 352 team kills or unreturned spikes, 242 more than the previous record of 1 10 set in 1985. Horne, a junior, recorded an individual best of 83 kills which more than doubles the previous record of 32. The 1985 Lady Rams had two players over 20 kills as compared to the 1986 squad which had seven (three over 50). Although there were many disappointed girls on the 7-11 squad, this season must be considered a success. Many good things were heard around the Rams' camp all season. After a 4-0 start the avid Wyalusing net fans began to believe in this little team (smallest in the league, averaging only 5'4Vi ). The team scoring load fell on the capable hands of senior Tri-captains Lori Genz, Debi Pickett, and Tamra Jayne who tallied 128, 116,94 points respectively, but the real backbone of this team was its defense. Touted as one of the best in the league, the Ram defense forced many teams out of their standard attack and into long volleys. It appears as though WVHS volleyball may have borken the mold of NTL also-rans, and is on its' way to being a league contender. This can be proven by the way the Rams played against a much taller Towanda Black Knight squad in losing two close matches. The Lady Rams refused to admit defeat, a very good quality in the face of a league which sent two of nine teams to the state tournament. 31 o 5 ? 7 y O 7 « 33 LADY RAMS BASKETBALL This year's edition of the Lady Rams Basketball Tearn again enjoyed a successful year finishing with a final record of 16-10. A larger part of their success can be attributed to a stingy team defense as they limited their opponents to an average of just 37.1 points per game. Seniors on the squad were Dana Keeney, Debi Pickett, and Lori Genz. Each in their own way provided some solid leadership throughout the year. Juniors were Marcey Zurn, Elisha Driggs, Eileen Ottaviani, and Bette Knolles. Zurn finished the year as the team's leading scorer (12.3 points per game) and rebounder (6.9 boards per game) and generally had a very good season. Judy Huffman was the only sophomore letter winner and saw extensive playing time on this year's squad. Sophomores Lori Shirk, Michelle Bradish, and Diane Rouse rounded out this year's varsity. With the return of the above mentioned juniors and sophomores plus the addition of several Junior Varsity players, the team next year should be very competitive. Wyal. The two losses were very close decisions to a strong Waverly Wolverine team. Besides the team's excellent record, the highlight of the year was senior Ed Naspinski's performance. Ed went undefeated for the entire dual meet season, and he also became the first District Champion for Wyalusing. He also did well at States, placing 36th, in a field of 225 of the best runners in the State. Finally, Ed was selected to the 1 st team of the NTL Coaches' All State Team and was selected as Runner of the Year. Ed was not the only member of the team to enjoy success. Sophomore Dave Howard usually finished 2nd in dual meets, right behind Ed Na-spinski. Dave continued this performance right into Districts and became a District Runner-Up. Other members of the team who helped lead us to a 22-2 season were: Senior: Rocky Bates Sophomores: Barry Ruger Mike Flintger Dan Navarro Juniors: Steve Naspinski Freshmen: Jeff Fenton Bernie Kisner Louie LaLonde Mike Matson Mark Cerniglia We will be sad to see our two seniors leave us — they will be missed — but we have excellent runners to fill in, making next year look very promising. CONGRATULATIONS, ED NASPINSKI, DISTRICT CHAMP! The girls' Cross-Country team had what most coaches would call a young, rebuilding type of season, finishing with a record of 6-16-1 But that is exactly what it was. They are lucky to be losing just one senior. Fay Fassett, who helped the team a lot. Unfortunately, toward the end of the season, she became sick and missed the last few meets and Districts. The rest of the girls are a group with a great deal of potential, making the future look promising. Sue Naspinski, who was a second-team all-star selection, Melissa Kusmierz, and Melanie Flintjer were all outstanding freshmen. People who care enough to teach their students everything they know and to guide them in the right direction. 83 84 DEDICATION Educator, coach, traveler, gardner, gourmet cook and super sales lady are adjectives we selected to describe our selection as the 1987 dedicatee. Locally grown and educated she graduated from Wyalusing High School in the Class of '40. As the boys went off to war, she went off to the Albright College graduating with a degree in mathematics. Her first teaching job brought her back to Bradford County at New Albany High School where she also coached boys' basketball for a year. Returning to her Alma Mater she has dedicated more than thirty years of her life to the classroom, taking time off to raise two children, a daughter, Sue Ann, and a son, William. While not teaching she can be seen and heard assisting her husband. Bill, in their Main Street shoe store establishment, thus her students affectionately refer to her as shoe-shine. She loves to travel throughout the United States and leaves the country only to cruise the high seas. An avid floral gardner, her flower beds are admired as the best in town. She also has a reputation as Chef extraordinaire. Possessed with and admired for her boundless energy, her dedication to career, business, and family, she has earned the reputation as a stickler for following as well as interpreting the rules — we fondly dedicate this '87 edition to Mrs. Eleanor Kinney. 85 FACULTY Mr. Allen Adorns Business Ed. Yurgatis Robert Zimmerman BRADFORD COUNTY JUNIOR MISS KELLIE GOODMAN ' FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT BRAZIL ’86 — ’87 CINDY NEUBER I When someone mentions the country of Brazil to me, I get a certain twinkle in my eyes. Then I start to think about the 10 months I lived in Ribeirao Preto, Brazil. I got to know many famous cities, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Belem, and Manaus. Each one was memorable and distinct in its own special way. As for the people, they are very warm and open natured. When you greet someone, you give them kisses on the cheek. The people that were very special to me were my two host families, the Corelli's and especially the Menezes'. The one event that really sticks in my mind is Carnival. This is a five day (religious) celebration that ends on Ash Wednesday. The beauty of the costumes and the music is undescribable. I found that the language was my most difficult obstacle. It took me approximately 3 to 4 months before I could truly understand everything and before I was able to speak the language of Portuguese. If I were given the chance to do it over, I would. It gave me memories that I will treasure forever. 174 But not least! We have done a fe things different in this year's boo and we hope that you will enjoy yo memories at Wyalusing High School much as we enjoyed capturing them f you on these pages.
