Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1986 volume: “
FOREWARD The 1985-86 school year brought many changes to WVHS. We have witnessed the completion of our greatly needed gymnasium and classrooms to our facility. These long overdue structures we have eagerly awaited and, through the construction of them, caused some confusion and tumult, we agree they have been worth all the inconvenience. We have experienced some great changes in the administration of our school system. We welcomed three new members to the Board of Education—Mr. Gary Woodruff, Mr. Royal Champluvier, and Mr. Donald Salsman. Our superintendent. Mr. James F. Smith, took a sabbatical leave; and our principal, Mr. Warner Stark, assumed the suprintendent's duties. Our assistant principal, Mr. Augie Grant, then moved into the principal's chair, thus leaving us with a new assistant principal, Mr. Martin Weisgold, formerly of the Ag Department. The Vallian staff extends best wishes and much wisdom to all of these gentlemen in the decision which they will be called upon to make. Locally—some farm families opted for the Federal Herd Buy-Out” program and altering life styles in the process. Others saw in this program a threat of falling beef prices, while still others invisioned cheaper Big Macs” and Whoppers.” Statewide—we all enjoyed falling gasoline prices and this, coupled with fear to travel abroad, altered vacation plans for many. Internationally—we tensively watched as the president of our nation committed U.S. forces in Libya in the effect to curb international terrorism. On a more somber note, we have shared in the tragedy of the space shuttle and the loss of a comrade in Christa McAuliffs and like the rest of the educational community and nation, we grieve. Change begets progress and progress we must, for our ever-changing world will not permit stagnation. We could not record all of these changes and forces that affect our school, community, and nation; but we believe as you thumb through the pages that follow, you will, like us, hope and trust these changes will sustain us—and in the end we will be able to say we are better because of it.” Seated L.R.. Mr. Theodore Hoffmann. Mr. Robert Dibble. Mr. E. Thomas Champluvier. President. Mr. E. Larry Franklin. Vice President. Mrs. Mary Moon, Secretary. Standing. Mr. Royal Champluvier. Mr. Donald Salsman. If the hours he works are labors of love” then it can be said he loves his work”! If time spent on the job is any indication of caring” then he cares a lot”! Our 1986 dedicatee can truly be labeled a work-a-holic”. Throughout most of his life he has placed service above self. Duty to his country called him into the armed services during World War II where he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the submarines, U.S.S. PERCH and U.S.S. FLOUNDER, seeing action in the Pacific theater. Some say he even fabricated about his age to get into the Navy where he served from 1943-46. Leaving the Navy and completing his high school and college education, he graduated from Penn State University in 1951. From 1951-56 he tought Physical Education and coached basketball at Sullivan County FHigh School. In 1956 he earned his Master's Degree in Education followed by a year of teaching in Homer, Alaska. A principals certificate was added to his resume in 1958, Supervising Principals certificate in '59. Master's Degree in Guidance in ’63, and concluding with a license in school Psychology in 1967. His wife Belle became a part of his life on September 10, 1949. They are the parents of two daughters—Renee, a nurse currently practicing in the Philadelphia area, and Beth—employed as the Personnel Director for Bradford County. When not at work, he enjoys the outdoor sports especially hunting and fishing. Many who know him would probably label him as thrifty but those of us who really know him simply call him just plain cheap”) thus he affectionately adourns his nickname” of Scroodge”! I would like to tell you that in all the time I have been here I have enjoyed your school. I want to thank you for giving me your love and friendship. It has been a great experience for me being a cheerleader and having the opportunity to learn your language and customs. I will never be able to forget all the good times I had here with you. Thank you for helping me when I needed it. I will always remember you with love because you made me feel like I was in my home. Love Bettina NORWAY SJUR GJELLAND Having the honor to have been a foreign exchange student at Wyalusing Valley Jr. Sr. High School. I would like to thank you all for giving me a nice time. I have to admit that I was a little bit curious about how you Americans were, when I left Little Norway.” Now when I look back upon a year with you, I have to say that you are wonderful people. Even the coaches (track and football) gave me a good time. To the students I want to say thanks a lot for the way you took care of me. I felt like I had been living here for ever. You taught me a lot: customs, traditions, and some English. So when I leave I am going to look back upon this year as one of my best in my whole life. Hope we will meet again. The Rams opened the season with a 17-7 win over Wallenp, then dropped three straight to Canton, Lackawanna Trait, Waverly before rebounding with another 17-7 win over The Rams then fell to both Sayre and Triy but played well in a 14-14 Homecoming game tie with Athens. The season ended on a sour note, however, with losses to Welllboro and rival Towanda as the Rams suffered through their first losing campaign in more than a Offensive inconsistency and inexperience at several key positions were the two biggest factors in the Rams’ demise, but several individual performer s did provide the Wyalusing Faithful with something to cheer about during the course of the season. Senior running backs, Chris Woodruff and Frank Repsher furnished the bulk of the Ram offense as they combined for I, ID yards and 9 touchdowns, while junior quarterbacks, Steve Lewis and Kevin Armitage completed 43 passes for 553 yards. The Rams’ leading receiver, in 1985, was junior Jerry Casselbury, who hauled in 14 passes good for 243 yards. Defensively, the Rams were led by Sophomore Gary Otis, with 60 tackles, Frank Repsher, with 54 tackles, and Kevin Armitage, who picked off 6 pass interceptions. Despite losing D Senior Lettermen to graduation, the Rams will return 15 underclass letter winners for the 1986 season, and they are hoping to once again be a factor in the NTL title chase. Karen Rouse GIRLS BASKETBALL WVHS GIRLS BASKETBALL The Lady Rams basketball team enjoyed a very successful year as they finished their season with a record of 18-9. Strong defense was the key as the girls limited their opponents to an average of just 38.6 points per game. After opening the year with a First Place finish in their own Tip-Off Tournament, the young team was plagued by some inconsistency as their record moved to 7-5. After losing a close 31-29 decision at Sullivan County on January 7, the Lady Rams proceeded to win nine of their next ten contests as no team was able to score more than 38 points on them during that stretch. Included were big wins over Northeast Bradford and Troy while playing without leading scorer and captain Jennifer Price who was out with an ankle injury. As the second half moved to a close, the girls were tied with Athens for the second half NTL lead and headed for a showdown at Athens. The Bulldogs won 44-33 and continued on to win the Northern Tier League outright with a fine overall league record of 16-2. The Lady Rams bounced back to defeat Canton in the regular season finale by a 65-59 score. During this game, Jennifer Price scored her 1000th career point and also had her single game career high of 33 points. Price was the leading scorer for the team with an average of 17.2 points per game. She also led the team in rebounding with an average of 10.9 boards per game. Her contributions will be sorely missed by next years squad as her leadership and ability will be hard to replace. The prospects for next year are promising though as the remaining players on the team all return. Junior starters Debi Pickett and Lori Genz, and reserve Dana Keeney all saw extensive playing time at the varsity level. Sophomore starter and point guard Bette Knolles had an outstanding year as she averaged 5.6 points and 5.2 assists per game. Sophomore post players Marcey Zurn and Elisha Driggs also enjoyed good years, Zurn as the second leading scorer on the team at 6.7 points per game. Freshman Judy Huffman rounded out this years squad. Next years team should be strong with the return of the above mentioned seven letter winners. Coupled with the expected addition of some good Junior Varsity players it appears that the future is indeed bright for the Lady Rams of WVHS. Even though there was much inexperience in the line up. the team finished second place in the league and had a 14-3 season record. It was an exciting season as five dual meets were decided in the last bout with Towanda and with Canton winning two of these. A strong Waverly team was the only other team to soundly defeat us. Individually, we had great success. Frank Repsher finished the season at 32-5 and being in the finals of every tournament but the state finals. Frank was a Sectional champ, a District runner-up. a Regional runner-up, and a fifth place finisher at States to become the sixth place winner in six years. Todd Werts finished 29-3-1 with two Christmas tournament championships, Sectional champ. District runner-up, and Regional third place and qualified at States for the second time. Ironically, Todd beat the state runner-up three times during the season! Joe Doss, who was forced to wait until late in the season to compete, finished with a record of 14-5. Joe was Sectional runner-up. District third place winner. Regional runner-up. and quarter-finalist at States. Wade Gray finished the season I8-II-I with a third place finish at Sectionals and a fourth place finisher at Dis tricts to become a Regional qualifier. Both teams loose few seniors to graduation, which makes the achievements of the underclassmen all the more impressive. The boys, led by senior distance runner, Tom Frazier, finished the season with a 3-4-1 mark. The boys’ thinclads registered wins over Loyalsock, Towanda. and Troy, while tying Canton 75-75 with a thrilling come from behind win in the last event of the day. The Lady tracksters. paced by senior jumper, Nadine McMahon, finished with a disappointing 0-8 record. The girls were hurt throughout the season by injuries, which kept many stellar performers off the cinders.” At the NFL Conference Meet, held at SRU High School, under sunny skies and 30 mph winds, the boys managed to redeem themselves by finishing a solid fourth (behind Wellsboro, Sayre, and Athens). Clint Crawford, Ed Naspinski, and Jeff Cole teamed up for an NTL title in the 3200 meter relay along with Tom Frazier who also copped top honors in the 800 meter, 1600 meter, and 3200 meter runs. The girls, while not taking any NTL crowns, did manage to bring home some ribbons. Others Rams earning places at the NTL meet include: Bret Cooley, Jeff Williams. Joe Folta, John Frederick, Lori Genz, Lori Shirk, Dione Frazier. Julie Meyers, Nadine McMahon, and Annette Mowry for the girls. In addition, many of the Rams who placed at the conference meet also qualified for the District IV meet in Williamsport. Rams bringing home ribbons from Williamsport were Tom Frazier (5th-l600 m, 4th-3200 m), Ed Naspinski (5th-3200 m), and Jeff Williams (6th High Jump). The highlights of the season was taking second place at the Susquehannna Country Relays where the boys teamed up for some impressive statistics and finished only 10 points behind 1st place Windsor. 163 BASEBALL Standing: Assistant Coach—Brian Salsman, Chris Woodruff. Danelle VanDeMark BASEBALL When the new baseball season began, many were the questions to be answered. Though the Rams had a few holes to plug, it was expected that coach Gene Salsman and his troops would once again challenge for the NTL crown. Offensively the Rams had to find some hitters to replace two .400 hitters who had graduated and on the mound they had to find at least one more pitcher besides senior ace Dean Beeman. About the only thing the Rams were sure of was their defense. Slowly but surely the Rams began answering their questions. Though no .400hitters emerged, Kevin Armitage (.393) and Beeman (.377) provided the offensive punch to catapult the Rams to 16 victories (14 in the NTL). Though the Rams did not match the .325 team batting average of 1985, they did manage a good .288 average. Wheras last year only four players had more than 13 RBI’s, this years squad had seven players reach that number with Armitage leading the pack with 17. On the power side the Rams were much improved as they clouted 14 homers with Beeman’s four leading the way. On the mound, the emergence of freshman righthander Mark Woodruff (4-1) turned out to be a key factor in the Rams drive for the title. With only Beeman (9-2) returning with any experience, the Rams turned to Woodruff and Armitage (3-1). Beeman, who was 8-1 with a 1.73 ERA in 1985 improved his mark to 9-2 and had a 1.55 ERA. The Rams once again tied with the Sayre Redskins for top honors in the NTL. After leading the league for most of the year, the team lost 3 of their last 5 games enabling the Redskins to garner a tie. Five seniors will be lost through graduation. Dean Beeman. Mike Kusmierz, Mark Lewis, Ron Masters, and Chris Woodruff contributed much to this year's championship. Their abilities will be greatly missed but just as they came in to replace graduated players, other youngsters will replace them. In District play this year the Rams were abruptly eliminated in the quarter-final round. After beating Towanda ll-l to advance in the playoffs, the Rams lost a heart-breaking game to Danville 6-5, therefore ending their season with a 17-5 overall record. 167 SOFTBALL JMuys Standing (L to R): Charlotte Anderson—Coach. Front Row: Laurie Teel, Krista Goodman. Ann Warner. Debi Pickett, Kimm Bush, Crystal Teel. Coach Anderson N.T.L. CHAMPIONS SOFTBALL The Rams softball team enjoyed a very successful 1986 season. The undefeated team dominated the league and clinched the NTL championship with an 18-0 record. Each member of the team had an outstanding performance for the year. Junior Kellie Goodman and sophomore Kathy Horne kept the bats cracking with six home runs each. Kellie led the team in batting with a .511 average on the year. Her 23 RBI's were second only to Kathy Horne who had 24 RBI's on the season. Horne also led the team with 30 hits. The team batting average for the season was a whopping .403. Krista Goodman kept the baserunning lively with 23 of the team’s 201 stolen bases. The girls were also impressive defensively with few errors. Cathy Warner completed the pitching duties with a 17-0 league record. Her only loss was recorded during an exhibition game in the pre-season. She pitched a total of 101 innings and gave up 61 hits and 50 runs. She allowed just 38 walks on the year while striking out 67 batters. Her ERA was 1.80. The girl’s hard work and unlimited enthusiasm never let up. especially in some close half games with Northeast. Canton, and Waverly. The second half of the season the girls virtually walked away from all the competition. In the District 4 Playoff competition, the girls defeated Bloomsburg by a 13-3 score and moved one step closer to a district championship, but later lost to rival Northeast then ending all efforts for the District trophy. 171 Congratulations Seniors Best Wishes From THE FACULTY Congratulations Nadine!
