VALLIAN WYALUSING VALLEY JR. SR. HIGH SCHOOL R.D. 2 WYALUSING, PA EDITOR: KIM MILLER ADVISOR: MR. RICHARD YADLOSKY FOREWARD We the Vallian Staff of 1984 would like to present this edition of the VALLIAN to you. Many long hours and hard work have been put into making this book and we hope that it will bring back to mind the wonderful times spent at WVHS. We would like to wish the seniors much happiness and success in the years to come in all that they set out to do. To the underclassmen, we would hope that your remaining years at WVHS come to be as meaningful to you as they have been for us. Each one of us has experienced some disappointing moments during our years at WVHS; but we hope that the majority of memories this yearbook brings back to you will be of happy times. BOARD OF EDUCATION Seated; Left: Wendall Wilson; Theodore Hoffmann; Standing Left: E. Thomas Champluvier; Larry E. Franklin. Seated Right: Jane Carey; Lewis Reinhart; Edward Mapes; Standing Right: Robert Dibble; James McMahon 3 DEDICATION . 4 . . . MR. PAUL T. SMITH He entered the world on April 11, 1931, the youngest of two children. His early youth was spent in the rural community of Montrose, where he graduated from high school — Class of '48. He then spent four years at Millersville State College where he earned a degree in Industrial Arts. He was first employed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission, and later a teaching assignment was procured in the Wyalusing Area School District. On the 18th of June, 1955, he wed the former Barbara Hicks. In 1959 this union produced a daughter Suzanne and in 1962, a son Jeffrey, who just completed degree requirements from Slippery Rock University this year. His hobbies and interests are closely paralleled by his economic pursuits — an avid hunter, sportsman, and gun collecting wheeler and dealer. His economic adventures include tree farming and a recently opened Firearms and Sporting Goods enterprise. His long term dream is to participate in a big game hunt in the American West. He is a past adviser of the T I Club and NRA Rifle Club. He has supervised the Summer Youth Corp program for many years, and served as a member of the Wyalusing Borough Council and the United Methodist Church. The Vallian staff is proud to dedicate this 1984 edition to our teacher, craftsman, friend, and hunting mentor — Mr. Paul Thomas Smith. FOREIGN EXCHANGE STUDENT I want to say thank you to all the people of the Wya-lusing Valley Jr.-Sr. High School. I am sure I will never forget any of you. There were some special people that really made my stay here in the United States most enjoyable and I would like to thank them most of all. I think it is very interesting learning another language, cultures, and customs. It has been a great experience. I have many pleasant memories. When I return to Mexico, I will be taking with me a part of each and every one of you. I want you all to know that you will always be welcomed in Mexico just as you welcomed me here in Wyalusing. Thanks, Ma. Eugenia Valdes P. Monterrey N.L. Mexico MARU VALDES 6 CLASS MOTTO: If we can imagine it, we can achieve it. If we can dream it, we can become it. The '83 Rams were in the true meaning of the word a team. The botton line is reserved for words like success, victory, and winners, and in 1983 the winners were wearing green and gold. These Rams were something that all future Ram athletes can look up to and try to emulate; they showed that if you believe in yourself, if you have pride in the things you do, and if you are willing to work hard enough, you can be successful. There is an old Arapaho Indian saying that goes, Only the rocks live forever, and, unfortunately, that adage applies to football win-streaks as well as it does to anything else in our lives. Certainly, the streak will end, perhaps in 1984, perhaps not, but it most definitely will someday come to an end. The important thing is that the members of this Ram team (and the '82 team, as well) have done something very good. They have accomplished something that no other football team in our area has ever achieved; and they have done it with plenty of dignity and class. In an age when the news media bombards us with tales of crime, poverty, drugs, violence, and all sorts of negativism, it is kind of nice to be associated with something that is both successful and positive. We at Wyalusing have had a tremendous bunch of young athletes to cheer for in these last few seasons, and we can certainly be grateful for that. Finally, the outstanding freshman were Denise DePoto and Ed Naspinski. The cross country team also had some outstanding individual achievement. Tom Frazier placed 7th at the district 4 meet, qualifying him for the state meet. Tom was only the second person in Wyalusing High School history to qualify for the state meet. Tom was also selected to the Coaches all NTL Cross Country Team. Receiving honorable mention for the NTL girls' cross country team was senior, Mindy Barto. For the second year in a row we finished second in the league behind Athens. Our 28-26 loss to Athens was the deciding match for first place. We did have big wins over Sayre, who, at the time, was the favorite to win the league, Troy who was 12-0 at the time, and Canton, the Western Division Champion. Again, this year the matches were very exciting with many going down to the final bouts. Many individuals were important keys in our victories. Each boy seemed to do his job in the big matches. Individually we did very well. Five boys qualified for Districts. Chris Taylor, Sam Bocchino, Todd Werts, Mike Doss and Bob Korfmann. Also placing in Sectionals were Todd Salsman (4th), Randy Cole (3rd), Bryce Bedford (3rd), and Rick Kneller (3rd). In Districts only Mike and Sam qualified for Regionals. Sam taking a 1st, defeating Barry Munn of Sayre 10-1, and Mike taking 3rd, but defeating a 1983 Regional Runner-up from Bloomsburg. At Regionals things went our way and for the first time ever Wyalusing had two Regional Champions. Sam won on a Superior decision in the finals over Ross of Lackawana Trail and Mike defeated Spencer from Bloomsburg 5-3. The following week at the State Tournament in Hershey, Mike lost a very close match at the buzzer in the first round and was eliminated. Sam won his first two matches to place him in the semi-finals against 3 time State Champ, Matt Gerhard. Sam took third place. This was the third year in succession that Sam has been in the top three in the State Tournament. Mike was not taken down in dual meets. Sam and Mike had no back points scored on them in dual meets. 99 MATMAIDS Back Row: (Do R) Beth Millard, Connie Bennett, Kathy Price, Marie Kusmierz. With a couple of exceptions, most of the girls lacked experience needed for a winning team. This they made up for with a lot of hard work and a togetherness” which carried them through the season. The enthusiasm from the bench was also a large factor contibuting to the team's success. Their hard play allowed them to win their share of games and they were always competitive, even in losing. Most of all, the girls knew how to have fun. They made the season most enjoyable and one I'll always remember. Thanks for a fine season, Ladies. T. L. Record 13-3 Overall Record 13-5 As it is every year for the Rams baseball team, expectations were high. In the first five N.T.L. games the Rams managed to win only two games falling behind the leaders quickly. However, the Rams reeled off nine straight wins to get back in the race before a loss to Northeast dampened their hopes. Vince McClain was the most consistent hitter for the Rams this year. He accumulated a batting average of .309, leading the team in hits (21), homeruns (3), and runs-batted-in (18). Steve Pickett led the teams in most runs scored (19), stolen bases (10), and walks (22). On the mound McClain had the most wins (6), and most strikeouts (70), while Junior, Doug Oswald, has the best earned-run average (1.57). The Rams ended their 1984 season with a heart breaking 5-3 defeat at the hands of the Blue Jays of Bloomsburg in the District 4 playoffs. Some new talent arose during the year, however, to give Wyalusing a bright future. Sophomore, Dean Beeman, Freshman, Kevin Armitage, Junior, Bobby Oliver, Sophomore, Ron Masters, and Freshman, Scott Salsman, were only a few of the many underclassmen who will help the Rams back to their quest for 1 in the years to come. Finishing second in the N.T.L. with a 12-4 record is good in most places, but not good enough for Coach, Gene Salsman, and his troops! You can bet he will have his squad ready to climb that one notch back to the top where Wyalusing, is used to seeing a coach Salsman team. ns SOFTBALL CHAMPS Back row: (left to right) Coach-Charolette Anderson, Katrina Kellogg, Cathy Warner, Dana Keeney, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Heather Adams, Suzanne Duffield, and Heidi Brink. This was the first championship in softball for Wyalusing, and it was part of this years' triple crown. With a young team and uncooperative weather it meant indoor practices, emphasis on basics, and drill- drill, drill. The hard work paid off with early wins over Sullivan, Athens, and SRU. Our real tests then came from Northeast, Waverly, and defending Champion, Troy. As the season continued, Betty Warner and Heather Adams picked up a combination of five wins on the mound. Tension began to build in the home stretch with our last six games away and our come-from-behind play. At the season's end, Cathy Warner had accumulated two no-hitters and the first shut out of her high school career. In addition, she also took batting honors with the highest averages of .544. Cathy also had the most R.B.I.'s and stolen bases. Our first loss came in post-season game against Loyalsock. We were defeated 7-5 in nine innings of play. Seniors, Betty Warner, the team Captain; Heather Adams, and Tammy Latini will be sorely missed from our outfield next year. 119 GIRLS' TRACK TEAM Back row: Andrew Paolini (Coach), Jennifer Wilson, Melissa Neuber, Sharon DePoto, Jennifer Price, Laura Mohr, Stephanie Nelson, Maureen Slabicki, Crystal Coy, Michelle Fiske, Jenny Updegraff, Annette Pickett, Dave Behrend (Coach). 2nd row: Maru Valdez, Michelle Cobb, Jennifer Learn, Tammy Pecukonis, Fay Fassett, Shelly Shults, Ronda Cole, Eileen Vandemark, Debi Pickett, Kathy Pecukonis, Debbie Culver. Richard Iseminger - Invocation, Rev. Vaughn Glover - Address, Paster Richard A. Reeser - Benediction. June 6 the annual sports assembly was held. The outstanding Lettermen were: Mindy Barto, Wade Pickett, and Maureen Slabicki. The 4 year cheerleaders were: Sharon Crawford and Tammy Latini. The 3 year matmaids were: Michelle Kusmierz and Dina Manley. The Senior Athletes of the Year were: Wade Pickett and Maureen Slabicki. June 7,1984 135 seniors graduated from Wyalusing Valley Jr.-Sr. High School. Thomas Champluvier, President of the School Board presented the diplomas to the class. Following graduation 94 seniors went on the all-night party. As you read down through our class history, hopefully it will bring back many memories which you will never forget, and moments that you will always cherish. The seniors would like to thank everybody who has helped us make this year a success. Also, the seniors would like to extend a very special thanks to our class advisor, Mr. Behrend, who has given us so much of his time and really made our year enjoyable. As we all know, our class history won't end here. After we all graduate, we will all go our own special ways and make our own history. Hopefully, in five years, we will all return for our first class reunion. See you in 1989!! 201 204 205 206 207
