Text from Pages 1 - 208 of the 1983 volume:

Foreword We, the members of the 1982-83V allian, would tike to present your annual yearbook. After long hours of disagreement and compromise to iron out all the wrinkles, we have attempted to capture (compile) many of the things that happened throughout the year. This has been a year of change in the school. The high school administration and the building took on a new look. Mr. Augie Grant joined our staff in the 1982-83 school year, replacing Mr. Robert Jenkins. The building took on a new appearance with remodeling that eliminated the many large windows in favor of fewer, insulated windows and a solar heating unit placed on the back side of the gym. The teams of W.V.H.S. have enjoyed a successful season, with the support (of an enthusiastic student body) of their fans. We, The Vallian Staff would like to thank all those who made this yearbook possible: Teachers, Secretaries, Coaches and students for your cooperation with us. We hope that you enjoy this edition of the W. V.H.S. Jr. -Sr. Vallian. It has been filled with fun and many memories. We hope that in the years to come, you look back on this edition with fondness and enjoyment. 2 Seated: ADRIAN FISKE THOMAS CHAMPLUVIER JANE CAREY Standing: LEWIS REINHART JAMES McMAHON LARRY FRANKLIN CHARLES LACEY ROBERT DIBBLE James F. Grant 6 Assistant Principal High School Secretaries Mrs. Carol Lent ■ Mrs. Donna Lutz Dedication mam 8 Mr. Morris Dean Otten He was born in Terry Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, the seventh child in a family of ten brothers and sisters. A graduate of Wyaluaing High School, Class of ’56, he entered the U. S. Army for a tour of duty which included a two-year “hitch” in France. After Uncle Sam’s obligations were completed, he enrolled at Penn State University, graduating in May of 1963, majoring in Vocational Agriculture. In July of ’63 he was employed as the Vo-Ag instructor at Wyaluaing Valley. On July 9, 1966, his bachelorhood ended when he married the former Alice Talada, whom he met while she was a student teacher. In July 1970, a son Thaddeua Dean was born, followed by a daughter Maria Alice in November 1971, completing the family. His interests are many—from carpentary to gardening. Currently he is the supervisor of the On-the-Job work program at W.V.H.S. He is a man of restless energy with a yen to travel—yet is conservative, and charismatic. He is a man dedicated to career, church, and family. We, the Vallian staff of ’83, are pleased to dedicate this volume to Morris Dean Otten. 9 §EM ©si FinmiXES Top 5 Rock Groups Loverboy Journey Survivor Men at Work Top 5 Singers John Cougar Billy Squire Pat Benetar Billy Joel Lionel Richie Top 4 Past Times Partying Being with friends Cruzin’ Sports Top 5 Actors Clint Eastwood Burt Reynolds Tom Selleck John Wayne Ricky Schroder Top 5 Actresses Sally Field Loni Anderson Jane Fonda Heather Thomas Jamie Lee Curtis Top 5 T.V. Coach Ray Ratlin’s RAMS functioned as a unit with one goal in mind, to win the “Northern Tier League Championship.’’ During the pre season the coaching staff was somewhat pessimistic due to the loss of the “offensive line, ” but they all blossomed into successful working unit. Coach Raffin reported his team matured quickly and worked well together. The season opened with three straight shutouts over Lackawanna Trail 19-0, Montrose 21-0, and Windsor 26-0. The teams leadership fell on the shoulders of RAMS quarterback Fred Storey who’s determination to be a winner is credited much of the teams success. The RAMS opened the league competition with the tough Wellsboro Green Hornets and almost saw their perfect record end. A late rally by the “GUTSY” RAMS fought back to a 14-13 victory. Canton, as always, proved to be a tough win for Raff in’s RAMS, but the 60 yard storey to Brian Keefe pass will linger in the memory of many RAM fans for years to come. Raffin claimed to have the 2 best ends in the league with Brian Keefe and Wayne Bennett. Junior running back Ray Oswald proved to be the difference against Troy and the 20-0 tally on the scoreboard when the final buzzer sounded. Place-kicker Jim Stretch was the difference when the RAMS invaded Redskin territory, out scoring the Sayre team 9-6, while the following week, Waverly proved less difficult as the RAMS trounced their opponents 34-0. The team clinched the title in week nine by coming from behind to defeat the Athens Bulldogs by 31-14. The season climaxed against our up river rivals, the Towanda Black Knights, but it wasn’t even a 89 contest with a score of 33-0, closing out the “Undefeated season. The season started slowly as the young Rams lost to the Towanda Black Knights in the Troy Tipoff Tournament by a 44-27 score. As the season progressed, so did the Rams as they won 8 of their next 9 games. Included in that string was a win over Towanda 46-40, avenging their earlier loss. As the season wound down, the Rams established themselves as a solid ball club not to be taken lightly. They finished with a respectable season record of 16-7. High Lows 1. The Rams captured their fifth NTL crown in a row with a fine 16-2 record. The only losses were to Troy and Waverly. The season was highlighted by the two victories over Towanda, the second place finishers. A great crop of Seniors made the Rams good fortunes continue. Six starters, including most of the infield and the pitching staff will be lost to graduation. Four of those starters batted over .300 and the other two in the ,290’s. Three of the senior pitchers combined for 11 of the 16 league wins. Overall the Rama finished with a 22 - 6 record. A second place finish in the Montoursville Invitational Tournament showed what kind of team Whalusing had as they lost 6-4 to an excellent Montoursville. Again the Rams entered the District IV competition. After defeating Benton in the opening round of district playoffs, the Rams dropped a tough 5 - 3 decision to the Central Columbia Blue Jays to finish second in District IV - AA. The weather stopped a few of our athletes due to limited gym space but others ran through the snow, rain and cold. This type of determination is what made the rams successful. Through the year the team was willing to work, and would let nothing stop them from reaching their personal goal. Track and Field can be considered an individual sport but the boys and girls trained and compeated as a team which in turn excelled them as individuals. The fall of 1982 produced the best season the Cross Country team ever had. The boys league record was 16-2 and the girls record was 10-8. As the season concluded many individual records were set: Jim Walker achieved the highest points total any runner has collected. Jim Couch and Carlos Navarro achieved more points than any previous senior. Joe DePoto achieved more points than any previous sophomore. Mindy Barto achieved more points than any previous Junior. Tom Frazier and Jeff Cole scored more points than any previous freshman. The boys team finished 2nd in their league 4th in their district. The girls finished 5th in their league 10th in their district. Obviously the teams had a good year, but more important was the excellent display of effort. Cross Country can be a lonely sport. The individuals must establish their own level of drive. However, victories in the district 4 play-offs over Galeton and North Penn were a first in the school’s history. Those victories enabled the Rams to continue into the state tournament where they suffered a heartbreaking 55-54 loss to Bishop O’Hara. Individually, Kevin Mahoney and Fred Storey both scored over 1000 points in their 3 year careers and were named to several all-star teams. Other seniors contributing to the team’s success were Bernie Moon, Brian Jennings, Jim Walker, Bob Wulff and Jim Couch. :v R.:____ North Penn Towanda Northeast Troy Canton Northeast SRU Waverly Sullivan Towanda Sayre Athens Troy Canton Northeast SRU Waver ly Sullivan Towanda Sayre Athens Cowanesque Valley Cowanesque Valley Score 48 44 12 34 52 vs vs vs vs vs Wyalusing Wyalusing Wyalusing Wyalusing Wyalusing Score 51 27 55 45 36 34 vs Wyalusing 48 22 vs Wyalusing 43 30 vs Wyalusing 64 27 vs Wyalusing 48 40 vs Wyalusing 46 19 vs Wyalusing 57 45 vs Wyalusing 42 51 vs Wyalusing 56 41 vs Wyalusing 32 21 vs Wyalusing 37 24 vs Wyalusing 47 40 vs Wyalusing 52 27 vs Wyalusing 39 44 vs Wyalusing 49 57 vs Wyalusing 22 48 vs Wyalusing 34 47 vs Wyalusing 45 52 vs Wyalusing 45 Boys Basketball 163 Sports In Review The 1982-83 wrestling team had a very successful season. The power from our team came from seniors-Dave Whitmire, Diz Hitchcock, Brian Keefe, and Art Fenton; our juniors-Todd Salsman, Chris Taylor, and Mike Doss; and our sophomore-Sam Bocchino. These eight gave us 164 win si Also filling in Leon Mosher, Randy Cole, Chris Woodruff. With the inexperience we had, it was amazing that we were tied for the league lead going into the last match of the year. Unfortunately, we lost by one point. We finished the year at 14-5. If you missed our close matches, you missed some very exciting action. No less then five matches were decided on the heavyweight bout. We came through on three of these (Athens, Sayre, Troy). We also lost two matches by one point. Individually, Brian Keefe won all three Christmas tournaments and Sectionals, placed fourth in District, third in Regionals; he was a State qualifier where he won one and lost two. Todd Salsman was runner-up at Troy and took first place at Wallenpaupak. Sam Bocchino took first place and outstanding wrestler at Tunkhannock, Sectional runner-up, third in Districts, second in Regionals, and third in States. As you can see, we had a lot of success. This has been the most successful season in recent years, and we eagerly look forward to next year with a lot of experience returning. Sports In Review The 1983 Wyalusing Girls’ Volleyball team compiled an 8 - 8 record after toughing out a long, hard and often inconaiatent aeaaon. The team played very well through the middle of the season, despite much adversity; but sputtered in their last three games, thus missing out on a very good season and a chance at the district playoffs. The team this year was led by the serving and setting of Teresa Stanton who was also the top pointmaker of the season. The sometimes-inspired offense was led by Annette Bender, Wendy Edsoll, Rose Latini, and Maureen Slabicki. I The 1983 softball team finished with a record of 11 -S in the NTL and 14-8 overall. Six of these games were lost by one run. We placed third in the NTL and entered the District IV tournament. Playing without the services of four seniors, the Rams fell to Bloomsburg in the quarterfinal round. Cathy Warner handled the brunt of the pitching with help from her sister, Betty, and relief pitchers Heather Adame and Kim Davis. Cathy had a batting average of .542, which was the highest for the Lady Rams. There were four players with batting averages over .400. Kim Davis—.472, Betty Warner—.422, Patty Henry—.409, and Lysa Johnson—.407. Second baseman, Terri Repsher, had the highest fielding average—.980. She had 27 putouts and 22 assists, with only one error for the season. A special Thank you to Patty Henry, who in her first year did an excellant job taking over as catcher. Also, to Penny Epler, for the fine job she did as scorekeeper and morale boaster. When the chips were down, Penny was a great inspiration to me as well as to the rest of the team. The class of ’83 began its magazine sale on September 8. On September 24, the sale ended, surpassing the goal of $18,000 making the amount of $18,752. The three top sellers were Sandie Sals-man (1st), Wendy Edsell (2nd), and Kevin Mahoney (3rd). “Skip Day” was the theme for the homecoming float that the seniors chose to enter in the parade on October 22. The homecoming dance was on Saturday, October 23, in the gym. The 11 members chosen for the court were Kim Ahern, Annette Bender, (Queen), Sue Cole, Wanda Dransfield, Wendy Edsell (2nd), Lori Fredrick, Patty Henry (1st), Telysa Johnson, Rose Latini, Brenda Neuber, and Terri Repsher. The seniors leading the team were Jim Couch, Dave Huffman, Tod Lewis, Joe Merit, Leon Mosher, Carlos Navorro and Jim Walker. Senior members of the girls’ cross country team were Leah Brigham (manager), Sue Cole, Rose Latini, Satomi Osako and Priscilla Throne (manager). The girls’ team ended the season with a 10-8 record, finishing 5th in the league. The first Halloween dance at Wyalusing was held by the senior class on October 30, 8:00-11:00 in the school gym. The 15 seniors that were members of the football team all had the honor of leading the “tough Rams” into winning the NTL crown for the first time in 11 years. The record was an outstanding 10 - 0, with the Rams walking away in six games with shutouts. The total points scored against the “well-formed” team was 40. This season was the first in the history of Wyalusing football to ever go undefeated for a whole season. The 15 seniors included Mike Bayesa, Wayne Bennett, Phil Blemle, Art Fenton, Neal Gallagher, Manuel Garza, Brian Jennings, Brian Keefe, Eric Kothstein, Bill Lane, Bernie Moon, Gary Paddock, Fred Storey, Jim Stretch and Dave Whitmire. 1982 was certainly the year of the Rams. Congratulations, guys! The cheerleaders became an important part of the football season. The girls who represented the seniors were Kim Ahern, Captain, (3 years), Annette Bender (4 years), Wanda Dransfield (3 years), Wendy Edsell (4 years), Christa Johnson (3 years), and Brenda Neuber (3 years). On November 5, to close out the football season, the seniors held a seafood dinner before the Towanda vs Wyalusing game. 193 Class History In the week of November 8, Fred Storey was named Athlete of the Week. The girls’ basketball team had a very good season with a 14-4 record. The two senior shooters were Patty Henry and Telysa Johnson. The team ended the season 2nd in the league. In a game against the Canton Warriors on October 12, Patty’s milestone of her high school basketball career was made as she scored her 1000th point. At Wyalusing, Christmas came and was gone before anyone knew it, shrouded by a car accident that oc-cured on December 17, 1982, taking the life of Tony Richard Shaffer. Passengers in the car were John Armstrong, who was hospitalized with a fractured back, and Kevin Parsons, who received minor injuries. Many of his friends, teachers, and classmates attended the viewing and funeral. He will always be remembered for the friend that he was and will greatly be missed by all of his classmates. It seemed like the world stopped when the clock struck 12:00 midnight on December 31, as the new year had finally arrived. The year we all had waited for so long was finally here, “1983—OUR YEAR!” On January 29 the senior class held a dance in the athletic building from 8:00-11:00 p.m. On Sunday, February 13, there was a covered-dish dinner and a short program to honor the 1982 football team. NTL jackets were given to each of the players and cheerleaders. The seven seniors that helped in forming the boy’s basketball team were Jim Couch, Brian Jennings, Kevin Mahoney, Bernie Moon, Fred Storey, Jim Walker, and Bobby Wulff. The team ended the season with an overall record of 23-10. League record of 15-4. On February 22, 1983, in our last league game against Towanda, Kevin Mahoney scored the 1,000th point of his high school basketball career. The boys’ team won 71-65. The Ram’s wrestling team had five fine senior grapplers: Art Fenton, Dave Hitchcock, Brian Keefe, Leon Mosher and Dave Whitmire. Though they all wrestled very well during the season, Brian Keefe was the only one that made it to the State Championship competition at Hershey on March 18, 1983, and was defeated on a note of great sadness. Many of the other seniors wrestled in Districts and were defeated there. Even so, all returned home as winners. As you read down through the history of the class of 1983, you will see we have changed many things. We hope to see these changes improved in the future years, to help every senior that graduates from Wyalusing Valley High School. Remember his year as an enjoyable and delightful experience. The seniors would like to thank the three foriegn exchange students-Sa-tomi Osako, Japan; Antje Kotte, West Germany; and Manuel Garza, Mexico-for sharing their countries cultures with us all. We would especially like to thank Mr. Dave Behrend for all the help and time he has given to our class, to make this year a great success for us all. Our class histroy doesn’t end here. All of us, as individuals will go in many different fields. We will leave Wyalusing to make our own history and return for reunions. See you in five years, 1988! i% v . «■ %' ti.
