This when their chance came. This team, in addition to having some God-given talents had two characteristics that made them winners. First, they liked one another. They were not only teammates, but they were friends who did things together both in and out of school. Secondly, they played together as a team. It didn't matter who made the big play on offense or on defense; just so it was done. The second characteristic cannot be separated from the first. The 1977 Rams showed their character in the season opener, getting two touchdowns in the last quarter to beat Montgomery 18-15. The last score coming with 1 35 remaining on the clock. This score was set up on a 40 yard 4th down play that put Wyalusing on Montgomery's 7 yard line. This play set the tempo for the coming season and made the Rams believers in themselves. The second game of the season was similar to the first except the Rams held on to a 20-0 first half lead to beat a fine Wellsboro team 20-19. This shocked the Northern Tier League since Wellsboro had an all veteran team and was the pre-season pick by most experts to win it all. Wyalusing traveled to Notre Dame, Elmira, N.Y. the following Saturday night and was soundly beaten 35-0 after playing a good first half. The fourth week was an open date, and this gave the Rams the necessary time to regroup and prepare for the remaining games. The following week the Rams beat North Penn 41-0. The secondary highlighted the defense by intercepting eight of the Panthers' passes. Troy came to Ram country for the fifth game of the season and went home 30-13 loosers. The following week Wyalusing handed Athens a 14-0 defeat on a very wet night. This gave Wyalusing a 5-1 overall record at this point and a 4-0 league record. This set the stage for the following week when the Rams traveled to Canton for an all important league contest. The Rams were beaten 18-6. Thus, losing the opportunity for an outright champoinship of the N.T.L. In addition to losing the game, the Rams lost their quarterback and fine safety, Ron Schnure, for the remainder of the year. This could have dealt a crutial blow to most teams, but the character of the team was displayed once again when they beat Weatherly the following week 35-6 and closed out the season against upriver rivals Towanda with a 13-0 victory. This left Wyalusing with an overall record of 7-2 and tied with Wellsboro and Canton for the league championship. This was the first football championship since 1969. Post-season honors were gained by several of the Rams with Ron Keeney, Martin Burns, Bill Kinney, and Jay Warner making the N.T.L. offensive All Star Team - sponsored by the Elmira Star Gazette. Martin Burns is a Junior center. They did, however, lack the outside shooting they needed to put the points on the scoreboard. The prospects for next year look good, and the team is hoping for a more successful season. J.V. Possibly contributing to this was the rather young age and inexperience of most of the wrestlers. Five of our wrestlers competed in sectional competition. Ron Schnure, Jeff Gailey, Busty Kellogg, Bill Prichard, and Ken Howard, all graduating seniors, showed much improvement during the season. Bill Prichard lost in overtime, and Ron, Jeff, Ken, and Busty each beat a boy seeded higher than themselves with Busty advancing to Districts. This was a big improvement over last year. Four freshmen, three sophomores, and five juniors lettered; and hopefully they, along with other seasoned members, will return next season. Coach Schnure feels that with the valuable experience the guys picked up as the season progressed, they will make fine wrestlers next year. The team coached by Mr. David Behrend charted many good times and distances, with several records being set. Three young athletes topped the track and field events at W.V.H.S. this spring. They were Mike Charland, Dennis Parkhurst, and Steve Coy. Together they compiled 525 points in this year's meets. like's triple jump of 44' 8 1 2 placed him first at the District 4 meet. His fourth place finish in the pole vault, with a vault of 12'6 placed him in the top ten vaulters in the state. Mike went on from Districts to participate in States in both of these events but failed to place in either event. lennis Parkhurst, who puts the shot and throws the javelin, hurled the latter 178 feet for a new W.V.H.S. record and an NTL individual honor. While Steve Coy set no records, he compiled 108 1 3 points in this season's meets. Brian Jayne joined Parkhurst with an individual league championship in the 880 yard run. And the W.V.H.S. 440-yard relay team set a school record with sprinters Ron Fenton, Rob Sowden, Jerry ring the baton. Freshman Robert Coy took the bulk of the long run honors. Bob ran the mile in 5 min. 12 sec. The 880 yard run in 2 min. 17 sec. and the 2 mile in 12 min. 10 sec. Ill Dedication . . . 112 Mrs. Harriette Dibble A wiseman once said that good things come in small packages ' and this statement certainly applies to whom the VALLIAN staff wishes to dedicate the 1978 edition. She came to the Wyalusing Valley in 1940 from Dover, Delaware—a graduate of Dover High School and Drexel University. Her maiden name was Smith, but she was not destined to keep it for very long. Her husband. Bob, reports She chased me two-thirds across the continent. Here the chase ended when they both exchanged vows of holy matrimony on July 2. 1943, in Pueblo, Colorado, where Bob was serving Uncle Sam. Her career in education was interrupted in 1946 when a daughter. Annette, was born, followed by another daughter, Cathy, two years later. From 1955 to 1966, she returned frequently as a substitute teacher and in 1967 again entered the ranks as a full-time educator. Her devotion to iob and family can only be surpassed by her outstanding qualities of honesty, discipline, integrity, loyalty, and civic responsibility. She is a member of Fortnightly Club, United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Her spare time is occupied with horticulture, sewing; and she is blessed with an insatiable appetite for conversation. With great pleasure the VALLIAN staff proudly dedicates the 1978 edition to the Little Woman in Room 11 --Mrs. Harriette Dibble. 113 Class History The Class of '78 may be remembered for many things, we were a very special class. We had the wildest sophomore hop ... no one will ever forget the Dead Branch Band! The Junior Prom was a definite improvement with Juice, 'and the gym looked terrific for the Senior Prom---too bad our band couldn't make it. (The Watkins Family was a big disappoint- ment. It would have been nice if they had known our theme song.) We welcomed many new teachers (especially in our English classes) and we said goodbye to a few (including Miss Gehret, who terrified us at first but turned out to be a real friend). We had the first championship football team this school has seen since '68, and our class produced some outstanding athletes in track and field. We became quite the topic of conversation and headlines during the spring of our Senior Year. In light of this, our class trip to Washington was a big success, and the class day we reinstituted proved to be great fun for everyone. We had a nack for making things run as smoothly as possible. Commencement posed no major difficulties and the evening seemed to pass by very quickly. Everyone that went on the all-night party seemed to really enjoy themselves. We were a very special class. We may have had our differences and done things apart from one another, but we seemed to always pull through and rally together in times of crisis. Basically, we did enjoy being together. Hopefully, we will always enjoy being together. 114 RIDE Homecoming was a big event this year for W.V.H.S. For the first time in the school's his tory, there was a parade to tip off the big event. This parade included the 1977-78 Homecoming court, floats, and the Ram's Marching Band. The floats, which were sponsored by various clubs were: (left-right) student loan, aviation club--which took first place in the contest of floats— cheerleaders, and (below) the F.B.L.A.'s Community Beauties. 7 V The football game was started off by a spirit-line at the goal post. Coming through the hoop (at left) was Tim Stone, Captain of the team that week. At halftime, the crowning of the new 1977-78 queen, Esther Way, was performed, (center) With the queen was her court (below); 2nd runner up - Vickie Clapper; 1st runner up - Vicki Durland. Lynne Lacey, Tammy Mills, Bonnie Ott, Colleen Moore, Kelly Salsman, Ann Comstock, Dorothy Howard, and Debbie Smiley. Busty and Tammy began their reign as the new king and queen with a dance together. Also, that evening, everyone who attended enjoyed the entire event very much.
