VALLIAN Editors Advisor: Gail O’Conner Mr. Richard Yadlosky Lorraine Day Foreword In this year of America's Bicentennial the VaIlian staff wrestled with the idea that perhaps we should construct the Va Ilian with this as our theme. Furtheir investigation uncovered the fact that most readers had already reached the Bicentennial Saturation Point. In the wake of our country's 200th birthday, amidst the burst of patriotism and overcome with appreciation of our heritage and pride in our country, we concluded that our talents with pen and camera might better be aimed at the Wya-lusing Area. Like our nation, this Valley and surrounding points has an historical significance all its own. We admit most have no exact correlation to 1776; nevertheless, many bear remembering in their own perspective. From French Azilum to Friedenshuetten, Lime Hill to Camp-town, from the Sullivan Trail to back country log cabins and grist mills —a region rich in pride, heritage, and patriotism. Our intent is not to rewrite history, nor to change it through some complex or mediocre interpretation. Our purpose is merely to remind, reminisce, and remember those events, places, and peoples who came before us. V- 'j L,ME,H1LL ' by l4- a party! tried toTe J£° B® ian ca ln'S’as hour ba«lf Th 'Vhi r was6 KUM. bU' ’he mom- Lime Hill Lime Hill Battlefield, April 14, 1782. Sergeant Thomas Baldwin's party in attempting to rescue Mrs. Roswell Franklin and her four children, who had been captured by Indians, met the enemy near this spot. After four hours of fighting, three of the children were rescued but Mrs. Franklin was killed. Sergeant Baldwin's breastworks were located seventy rods northwest of this marker. Joseph Elliott second in command at the battle of Lime Hill, April 14, 1782, killed the Indian who shot Mrs. Franklin and rescued three of her four children. He was in the engagement at Trenton, Dec. 25, 1776, and was presented a sword by General George Washington for bravery. He broke from the Indians at Bloody Rock, Wyoming Massacre, and swam the Susquehanna River with a bullet in his shoulder and escaped to Wilkesbarre. Source: THE SETTLER, Jan. 1961, Vol. VI 3 French Azilum (Refuge) founded by French nobles on the Susquehanna, was to be the home of Her Majesty Queen Marie Antoinette and her son. Driven from the French Throne during the French Revolution which began in 1789, King Louis XVI was guillotine on January 21, 1793. Fate and destiny prevented the Queen from even reaching the shores of American for she also met death on the guillotine in October, 1793. The young son-future King Louis XVII—died of neglect in a French Prison. The French Colony was abandoned after a mere decade of settlement. Wyalusing Rocks, famous Indian lookout of the Iroquois Warriors, overlooks the Susquehanna. Located approximately 500 ft. above the river the Indians watched the coming of the white man and unfriendly tribes. The ROCKS located on the Warrior Path , led from Iroquois country in New York to the Catawba country in the Caro-linas. Over this trail passed the Six Nations war parties against southern Indians. The path made its way through the Allegheny Mountains by following the Susquehanna and Juniata Valleys. 5 The Grist Mill, (lower photo,) in the village of Stevensville now lies in ruins. The Mill once belonged to W. G. Grant, father of the late W. T. Grant, founder of the famous Grant Department Store Chain. The adjacent photo shows the Mill Race and the building seen is the birthplace of W. T. Grant. Immediately behind W. T.'s birthplace is the Mill Pond which furnished the power to run the Mill. 6 Getting into the Bicentenial Spirit came easily to W.V.H.S. Mr. Allen Adams and Mrs. Jean Reinhart of the Business Department host the F.B.L.A. Spring Leadership Workshop held at the High School in November, 1975. Students from Wyalusing High also attended wearing Colonial attire. 7 The Wyoming Valley massacre (July 3-6, 1778) and the Cherry Valley massacre (Nov. 11, 1778) in New York prompted the Sullivan expedition. George Washington ordered General John Sullivan to ascend the Susquehanna Valley and General James Clinton to drive up the Mohawk River in New York to crush the Tory—Iroquois Indian menance. Sullivan's army camped here on August 6-7, 1779 near the site of Frie-denshuetten. The combined forces of Sullivan and Clinton destroyed forty Indian vi Mages and some 160,000 bushels of corn, which brought to an end the Indian terror of the Susquehanna Valley. 8 — FRIEDENSHUETTEN Moravian mission founded at Wyalusing Indian town, 1763, by Zeisbercjer. who built a model Indian town. Abandoned in 1772, when pastors Ettwein and Roth led some 200 Indians to the mission of Friedens-stadt on the Beaver River. Farewells Welcome The VaIlian extends a welcome to Mr. Clair Goodman, our new Superintendent of the Wyafusing Area School District. Mr. Goodman is a graduate of Lock Haven State College and also possesses a Masters Degree from Clarkson University. He received his Superintendent credentials from Lehigh University and assumed his duty in that capacity in June of 1975. We bid him a special welcome and trust his leadership, educational guidance, and residency in the Wyalusing Area Schools shall be rewarding and long lasting. 11 Dedication Mrs. Ruth Harris Mrs. Ann Jennings Mrs. Jennings and Mrs. Harris, guardians of the High School Infirmary, will be leaving us this year. We of the Vallian staff wish to dedicate the 1976 VaIlian to our school nurses, for the years of service and dedication they so faithfully administered. Between them they have accumulated over thirty years of service, nursing aliments with compassion and understanding. Our pen could fill many pages with adjectives of admiration, but time and space permits us neither. We have chosen the following revised excerpt of the Florence Nightingale Pledge —words we feel to be very appropriate. We solemnly pledge ourselves before God ... to pass ourselves in purity and to practice our profession faithfully, to abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug. We will do all in our power to maintain and elevate our profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling. With loyality will we endeavor to aid the physician in his work, and as a 'missioner of health' we will dedicate ourselves to devoted service to human welfare. 13 — In Memoriam A man, a man will never be As much a friend, or could never Give so much to the world around him. Or look on each day as new and delightful And have the intelligence and humor Mixed All together in a man as he. Favoring none, yet favoring all; Able to teach and cause enjoyment; Unafraid to let a person know that he Was there. If help be the need it was always in Limitless supply. Knowledge was a key he used To enable many to look through doors Unseen, or unnoticed By people Before. A man, a man whose generosity Of himself won't be forgotten; Who was always willing to lend a hand Or a thought as it was needed. The love he gave Enables us to grow Into the rainbow of colors that Flow together as pleasingly as did he. Vicky Bendock Kean M. We can all benefit from this advice. As graduates, you should possess the skills or tools with which to work in order to accomplish your goals. It is my wish that as each of you strive toward your life's goal, that your work will not only be gratifying to you but also to your family, your community, your country and your God. My personal congratulations and best wishes to each ot you. 98 Principal Assistant Principal MR. KENNETH WILLIAMS Congratulations Class of 1976 No other class has had to face the problems that your class faces now that you have graduated. It is not hopeless, however, because no other class has had the advanced technology and all other tools for the answering of world problems that you have. Thus it is that you find yourself disadvantaged and yet advantaged. The greatest mistake you could make would be to become discouraged for that alone would defeat you. MR. WARNER STARK Congratulations to the Class of 1976 I hope the majority of experiences you have encountered during high school have been rewarding and that the education you have received will be a sound basis for the future as a person and as a citizen. 99 Administrative Secretaries High School Secretaries Standing: Rose Hatton Betty Schroth Joan Manley Beverly Strong Seated: Donna Lutz H o P m h e y I l S i s c h S 0 t 0 u 1 r d V e V a s n i t t 0 r Counslers Seth Johnson Hobart Hutchins Custodians Earl Woodruff Robert Cobb Cafeteria Staff Julia Franklin Winifred Potter Shirley Knowles Emily Kingsley Retha Meteer Elizabeth Kunkle 101 r Physical Education Department Drivers Education Department Audiovisual Department Editors—Gail O’Connor Lorraine Day Advisor— Mr. Richard Yadlosky Treasurer: Patty Bundle Advertising And Sales: Lynne Lacey Kelly Stahl Lee Ann Knolles Gail O’Connor Lorraine Day 113 Typing Staff: Gail O'Connor Lorraine Day Michele Mi Her Lee Ann Knolles Art Staff: Max Poetschan Joe Couch Mark Jackson Jeff Couch Robin Brumbaugh Mike Mathis Micki Masters Lorraine Day 114 Photography: Rick Stevens Mark Welles Layout Staff: Michele Miller Jane Squire Kelly Stahl Lynne Lacey Lorraine Day Mariann Caine Gail O'Connor 115 Student Faculty Association Officers: Pres.—Graham Wheel Vice-Pres.—Ellen Stone Trea.—Colleen Moore Sec. — Mark Collins Faculity: Mrs. Elizabeth Bradley Mr. Morris Otten Mr. John Voda Mr. Allan Adams Mrs. Terri Dow Mr. Robert Houck Advisor 116 National Honor Society Old Members SEATED: Barb Skillings, Ann Dieffenbach, Barb Shaffer, Ellen Stone, Hollie Ridgeway. Masteller Rebuilding was the word for this year's Cross Country team. Though the overall season was mediocre, this young team gained much in the way of experience. Unfortunately, Randy Brigham, one of the team members, received a knee injury in the latter part of the season. Because of his injury, the team worked harder to make up for this loss. Jon Schulze and John Zaner were the only two seniors and everyone else on the team was a sophomore. For next year the team should be well trained and experienced to have a great season. In this year's standings, the boys' record was 6 wins and 9 losses and girls' record was 2 wins and 5 losses. This was the first year for girl's Cross Country in our school and in many others. For this reason the girls were not able to run in many competitive meets. Although the team had trouble getting started, the year ended, with much satisfaction and accomplishment and hopefully next year more girls will go out for this sport. Seniors Lisa Stanton Linda Clapper Softball was among the many new sports offered to girls this year. Their coach was Chris Barrett and helping her was Jean Mosier. Practice started with a multitude of girls showing up. The team was then cut to 18 girls and the season ended with 15 girls sticking it out. Once the season got under way the girls could not be stopped. In spite of broken fingers and baggy pants,,the girls wound the season up in second place. It should be mentioned that the girls went undefeated until the last game of their schedule—certainly an impressive record for a team only in its infancy! Girls Basketball The Girls Basketball team placed fourth in the league standings. Lettermen on the team were: Seniors; Vicky Say-man and Barb Skillings. Juniors; Linda Johnson, Karen Boyanowski, Gail Burke, and Karen Chaffee. Varsity 14a Ram R-o-a-r-e-r-s This year's Ram Varsity squad had a very exciting season. The Wyalusing defense was one of the hardest in the league to play against. They never let up once to let their opponent receive a goal without first getting through that rough, fighting line. The offense did a terrific job, making the team work as a whole, and soon many victories followed. Even though last year, the coach looked on at this year skeptically, the overall football season for the Ram team turned out to be fantastic. The team's spirit and endurance made every game unmissable for the spectators. Our Future Football Champs... This year our Junior Varsity team really got it together and played an outstanding football season. The boys on this team boosted our football outlook for the future, hoping for as great a Varsity season as this year's was. 149 Wyalusing’s Junior High 150 Seniors Royce McMahon Tiger Peterson John Winters Is This Our Varsity? It began with the boys individually practicing to make the team better as a whole. With many Manger: of these athletes coming back for another year, the team Bobby Ott should be well experienced and skilled. All of these young men on the Junior Varsity team put forth a very fine effort and it showed in the end results. This strong team was tied for second in the second half standings. With the team going twice into double overtime, they showed their opponents that the Ram J.V.'s were not ready to give in. As next year rolls around, we hope they once more stick in there and pull out many more wins! 153 Seniors j m A r e y Statisticians: Lorraine Day Vinita Verghese 154 The Varsity season took many losses both in league and out of league competition. This young team started out with only three returning lettermen, of which two were seniors. The team lacked the experience and the skill their opponents brought against them. With most of these men coming back, we hope for a better season. Many of our wrestlers received individual honors. Tiger Peterson came in second in Sectionals and Tony Wells was Sectional and District champ. Tony received the most outstanding wrestler title in Sectional competition. He became the first in our school to win three Christmas tournaments and the second to win two District titles. Ron Johnson, along with Tony, won in the Columbia County Christmas Tournament. Our Junior Varsity team wrestled a very good season with a winning record, which was excellent, for no seniors were on the squad. Some of these men will move up to next year's Varsity team, giving it a hopeful outlook. The Varsity record was 1 win and 13 losses. The Junior Varsity record was 7 wins and 5 loses. 156 Lloyd Johnson Tony Wells Lester Kobbe 157 Junior Varsity Junior Varsity record was 5 wins and 9 losses. Varsity record was 0 wins and 14 losses. Seniors on the team were: Vicki Sayman Hollie Ridgeway Sue Phinney Donna Emery Janet Huffman Beth Chase Darlene Walters Kathy Shoemaker Varsity KT Sports All Banquet ssa a A O On May 22, 1976, the All-Sports Banquet was held in the high school gymnasium with T. Ralph Pug Williams as the Master of Ceremonies. The annual banquet is held to honor all students involved in athletics. Awards were presented to three outstanding letterman: Jim Arey (8 letters), Vicky Saymen (7 letters), and Jon Schulze (8 letters). Sponsoring the annual event is the Rams Booster Club. For the first time in several years, the W.V.H.S. team was hurt by a lack of depth. Individual honors were numerous on both the girls' and boys' track and field teams. Junior miler Harry Fassett was a league champion at 4:42.7, and senior Jon Schulze broke the school record in the triple jump with a jump of 41'9.5 . Sam Dyer lead in field events while Royce McMahon was one of the league's top sprinters. The girls were busy breaking school records, making it a total of five at the season's end. They are; Judy Hunter in the mile run, Dede Moody in both the shot put and the discus, and the relay team of Karen Boyanowski, Kathy Bride, Cathy Ferris, and Colleen Moore in both the 440 yard relay and the 880 yard relay. All the members of the girls' and boys' track teams put forth an all out effort, making each point a deserved credit. 162 Vicki Sayman 164 Janet Huffman Judy Ciprich Gina Chadwick Strong defensive play, solid pitching, and clutch hitting were characteristics of the N.T.L. champs this year. In their own tournament, the Rams placed second, losing to Montoursville with a score of 2-1 in an 11 inning game. Norm Salman was the recipient of the best defensive player in that tournament. Wyalusing saw things come to light after defeating To-wanda, in a big win of 9-2. The team went on to become the league champs after losing only one league game. The playoff game was played against Montoursville, who again defeated us and we lost the district title by a score of 4-1. The season was still remarkable and it proves that good coaching and terrific players are an unbeatable combination.
