Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1967 volume:

As another year passes, students begin looking forward to the future. To some this means additional years at W.V.H.S.; while to others, it means the conclusion of their high school days and the dawn of new and possibly uncertain horizons in life. Even as one looks ahead, the years spent in W.V.H.S.willnotbe forgotten; but will serve as a beacon to light the way into the future. When phrases like “remember when we used to...” occur in conversations, the 1966-67 year at W.V.H.S. will be relived. A year filled with memories cannot be enclosed within the lifeless covers of a yearbook; rather it is a private collection of ideas and feelings resulting from personal experiences differing with each student. We, the Vallian staff, hope that this book will serve as a personal guide to help you keep alive your individual memories. With this in mind, we proudly present the 1966-67 Vallian. Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, you have been all of these to us and even more. How can we say— Thank You? We could have offered you a gift. But we have chosen instead to produce this yearbook for you. Thel967Vallianisonly the tangible embodying the intangible—our deepest admiration. Therefore, we proudly dedicate our yearbook to you--“Our Mr. and Mrs. B.” 5 By: Glen Yasharian By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established: by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches. Proverbs 24: 3-4 In the Wyalusing Valley On the Susquehanna shore. Stands out noble Alma Mater; Sing its praises ever-more. May thy colors wave forever. As the coming years unfold; Hail to thee, Wyalusing High, Hail to the green and the gold Supervising Principal With the advent of commencement one feels that he has arrived. The highest towers however, start from the bottom. The tower of one’s education begins with the birth of a single human and ends with the commitment of the body of this human to the elements. Education, like godliness, is a never-ending process. May you always remember that the highest towers start from the bottom’’ and, as you stand on the sod of your foundation, your high school commencement,” may you look upward and visualize the top of your tower. 10 Principal To The Class of 1967 Commencement is the realization of a dream. Your first step in the educational procedure of life has been completed. Some of you have traveled far, while others have taken but a short step. It is my sincere desire that as you begin to make your place in the sun you will realize that the inquisitive nature of man demands that he reach farther with his mind in order that he may enjoy more fully the fruits of this life. In a few weeks my attitude had changed so much that I was quite upset to have to stay home with the mumps. During this year I have had many novel and delightful experiences which have given me a fresh approach to the American way of life. All my warmest thanks to the students and teachers of W. V.H.S. whose friendliness have made possible such a wonderful year in the United States. Without such people as you--my American family, the A.F.S. Chapter, and the people of Wyalusing--the A.F.S. motto, Walk together, talk together, O ye people of the Earth. Then and only then shall ye have peace, ” could never have been fulfilled. 52 Jillann Derbyshire The past year, which I spent in Australia under the Rotary International Exchange Student Program, was a year I will never forget. I feel I gained an incal culable amount of knowledge and experience in life. I came to consider Austral ia, its people and its customs as my own country. Until I return, I will always remember and deeply appreciate the Aussie hospitality. During my year abroad, I had the good fortune to visit thirteen countries around the world. I have seen and done many things, and I have come to one basic conclusion. We must never take our country for granted as so many of us do. We must always be thankful to God that we have the privilege to live in the United States of America. David G. LaFrance Walk together, talk together all ye peoples of the earth, then and only then shall ye have peace. This is the American Field Service motto and it has become an unforgettable motto in my life. For through this organization I spent an irreplaceable summer in Greece. The knowledge that I gained from living with the Greeks, learning their customs and struggling with their everyday trials was all part of my experience. I feel I have learned and gained much more than I can ever give, and I hope to see more people trying for this opportunity, for it is a priceless one. Kathy Morse 54 All that 1 gained from my past year in Mexico cannot be expressed in words. Not only did I learn about the people, their language, and their customs, but about myself. I was on my own and I got to know myself and what I want from life. I wish to thank the Laceyville Rotary Club, the Los Mochis Rotary Club and every Rotarian in every country of the world for being a part of the wonderful organization that made this experience possible for me. Leonna Salsman 55 A special Sunday in January of 1966 became one of the most unforgetable days of my life--my arrival in the United States of America. Then began my association with the people of Wyalusing Valley where I have made many friends that I will never forget. The Laceyville Rotary Club made it possible for me to spend this wonderful year with you, the students of W.V.H.S. I hope all of you can come and visit me in my homeland, Argentina. Now that the members of the class of 1967 must go their separate ways, I want to express my appreciation to each and everyone for accepting me with friendship and cordiality. May all your wishes come true. Have fun! Juan Pedro Torroba 56 Ask not what your country Can do for you; But what you can do For your country. J. F. Glen Yasharian 97 At W. V. H. S. school spirit means different things to different people. Perhaps it's the exhilaration of winning a close game, or the mixed feeling of playing your best but accepting defeat. It's good sportsmanship, here, and whenever you represent your school. It's pep rallies, posters in the halls, school songs, cheers and cheerleaders. It's the desire to do your best for your school, whether it be a game, a band concert, or a club activity. But all would agree that school spirit is at its peak when the quiet respect for the Alma Mater binds us with spoken loyalty for the Wyalusing Valley on the Susquehanna Shore. ” 98 A farewell party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Bennett for Juan Pedro Torroba, our Rotary Exchange student from Argentina. On the evening of January 16, Juan was surprised by many of his friend once again (last year a birthday party was given by Mr. and Mrs. Bennett for Juan; it also was very successful since it was new for him to experience an American surprise birthday party). Entertainment was presented by Spanish Club members and also many of Juans other friends. The first part of the program was This is Your Life, which portrayed Juan's life from childhood to his return home from the U. S. to Argentina. Other entertainment included various panel shows, singing, and an all-around good time. Refreshments were served later in the cafeteria. Although Juan's return to Argentina was a sad event for all of us, we were very happy to have his friendship in the past year. 100 Senior Play 101 102 103 105 Majorettes LEFT TO RIGHT: Cindy Gamble, Libby Morse, Diane Beebee, Diane Herman, Kathy Burke, Sharon Harris, Linda Hart. % Majorette Club LEFT TO RIGHT: ROW 1; C. After attending the play, the club went to the Planetarium, where a Weather Show was presented. A general tour of die Franklin Institute and a tour of the Museum of Art were also included in the trip. Many of the students also reported enjoying the evening meal at a Philadelphia Automat. The next activity that took quite a lot of planning and hard work, was the Smor-gosbord taking place on November 19 at die High School. It included a variety of foreign dishes and proved to be a huge success. 144 Spanish Club At the end of the first semester of school, the new Spanish club officers were inducted. They are: President, Robert Stevens, Vice-President, Gary Stevens, Secretary, Mary Ann Bolles, Treasurer, Judy Salsman, and Historian, Polly Welles.
