However, we will long remember the benefits they have obtained for us. The new addition on the school is just one of the many things they have done to help ease the load on both teachers and students. These seven sparkling new rooms will give extra space to the fast growing population of Wy'east High School. P EULTY Isn't it amazing the things you remember about teachers? The ones you remember best are the ones that make you work hardest .... I-lave you heard ot Bullet Blankenshipn? That's Wy'east's favorite basketball player .... The sophomores sure are lucky to have such a good Biology teacher, Mr. Bowe .... Doesn't Mr. Bowman's Ag class make some fine trailers? .... If you hear loud cries of disgust you'll know it's Mr. Brigham taking candy away from the l3.E. students .... Doesn't Mr. Clark turn out interesting school DUDGISZ . . .It's a bird,it's Superman, no it's Mr. Jacobs in his flying machine .... Some- times it's little things like noise and color that brings back memories. We think of Mr. Johnson's flashy red suspenders and Mrs. Kirkwood humming a song during her English class, and you certainly can't forget Mr. Basic's fancy shirts and ties .... Do you remember that good looking teacher, Mr. Mase, hopping around on crutches? Isn't it too bad about him hurting his foot?. . . .Of course you all know Mr. O'Brien and his Algebra tests! .... Aren't we lucky to have Miss Parrott on our staff? .... What is that red I see bobbing up and down in the hall? Oh! that must be the new Annual teacher, Miss Penderqast .... Everyone that runs to lunch prob- ably knows Miss Heep because she is always standing in the hall nabbing speeders .... We gave Mrs. Romans the hardest job of all, guarding the refrigerator .... Missing-Carolyn Dillon, Secretary SE IUH CLASS l-low grown up they felt when they were seniors back in 1954 and 55. The fun they had as upperclass- men initiating the new, incoming Freshmen. Remember how they looked forward to graduation and all the fun they had when it finally came. There was talk about it for days after. And wasn't the prom the most beautiful dance you ever went to. A lot of work and time went into that dance put on for them by the loyal Juniors, and the only rewards were the oooohs and the aahs of smiling couples when they came through the doors. The theme of the Senior dance held in late winter was the Coconut Grove . Miniature palm trees and a waterfall carried out the theme. The officers were President, Jim Beam, Vice President, lim Craig, Secretary, Carolyn Dillon: and, Treasurer, Rose Sumoge. They all did a grand job for the graduating class. As the sands of time sift slowly through the hour glass we remember these as our seniors of 54-55. ADVISORS loci: Basic Quentin E1c'vvn.an f ar .farlcqraf Pllswortl. SUPHUMUHE EL SS Looking in the Hour Glass and watching the sands of time go by, they recall the weekly pie sales under the management of the Sophomore Class. Chairman for these sales was Bob Craig. With his committee working enthusiastically under him, they took action to make the sales a success. The charity drives for 1954-55 were under the direction of the class of '57. This was the first year of having one class responsible for all charity drives. For the March of Dimes campaign, the Sophomores sponsored an after the game benefit dance. Another highlight which drew loyal supporters oi the March of Dimes, was the basketball game played by the Wy'east faculty vs. the county faculty. This was a very exciting game with our Wy'east faculty winning by 2 points. The yearly Christmas decoration contest between home rooms was won by a Sophomore English class for the first time. The theme of the room was a Mexican Christmas. The Sophomore Class vied for and received recognition in winning the contest between the classes for selling Birthday Calendars. From the grand total ot !Bl8l2.5O, they brought forth S534.75. As a prize for their hard work, they welcomed a half day off from school. With Dale Mortenson as President, Mary Nichols, Vice-President, Darlene Walker, Secretary: and George Yumibe, Treasurer, it may be said they had a successful year. They shall always remember their initiation. What a time the upperclassmen gave them!! The shoes they shined, the books they carried and they smile as they think of the clothes they had to wear. They grin as the year reviews itself in their minds. They remember the times they had in Science Class, good and bad. And Gee! those English Classes and their teachers. As the hands turn back on the old clock, they see the joys they had, the ball games, the noon movies, the class meetings, the assemblies and how they remember those report cards. As their class officers they had: President, Jim Hatfield, Vice-President, Sam Meyley Secretary, Julia Rose, Treasurer, Carol Lobey. These were the good old days they can look back on. Sometimes they wistiully think: li only they could look forward to them once again. But time goes on and waits for no one. Johnson, moved up to director of Athletics, newcomer, Dick Mase took over as head man of the Eagle hoop destinies and guided his charges through the 1954-55 court wars. Highlight of the season was Wy'east's two victories over the Indians from The Dalles, marking the first time in the four year history of the school that any basketball team had been able to turn that trick. Three seniors, Tommy Williams, .lim Beam and Wyne Bibb formed the mucleus for Mase's fast break- ing quint that blew hot and cold during the twenty game season and finally wound up with an eight won and twelve lost record. After the rebound Now fellows Temper! Temper! Tom qets a rebound ln Mid-Columbia league play the Eagles turned in a creditable 4-4 record that put them in a tie for third place at season's end. Low point for the court year was dropping four in a row to the Hood River Squad. All four games with the Dragons were close but the Eagles were never able to put the stopper on high scoring Andy Crown. Tommy Williams, who led the Wy'east point production during the season finished with 202 points, was placed on the Mid-Columbia league All Star team. Several Juniors and some promising Sophornores saw a lot of action during the year and will be hack next year to bolster the Golden Eagle hoop fortunes. X -' ,Q 33 5 Miss Penderqast, Advisor T iw PLL If this is kindergarten, I like., Science Prof's of Wy'east The teachers institute was held on October 10-12 at The Dalles High School. This lasted a period or two days. With much anticipation, the students awaited the 1954 carnival which was held on October 16. The carnival was very well supported. The booths were operated by students from each class. The booths were covered with great long strips of crepe paper of all colors. Although you might fail to win the prize you wanted, there were so many more interesting and amusing things which you could try for you didn't even notice the failure. Never before have Wy'east and l-lood River given a joint performance, but the ice was broken by the bands. During the half-time of the football game the bands from the two schools gave a presentation on the field. A green mossy atmosphere hung over the cafeteria Friday evening, the fifth of November for the first Swamp stomp in 'Wy'east history. Dancers entered the'Swamp Stomp through a shack made of old weather worn boards and whirled under lowered ceilings and around misty pools of swamp water. A special F.l:'.A. assembly was held on Tuesday November 9, 1954. David Kollas entertained his audience by displaying slides taken while on his trip. Fritz Gangwer later rendered a short resume. This was an award won by their activities in F.F.A. Sixteen year old David Carlson and the Cooper Sisters visited Wy'east and presented an assembly on November 12, 1954. David Carlson played the piano, and among his numbers was a novelty called Three Blind Mice , played in his own interpretation. Closely following on the Field of events was the annual Senior winter formal, the Coconut Grove. Decorated with swaying palm trees and a cozy grass shack. lt was deemed a big success by all who attended. Wy'east hosted the Basketball Jamboree which was held in the gym. At our games a colorful sight was the members of the Pep Club doing an active little skit to the tune of the Bleacher Boogie. Before a game we had pep assemblies, they often consisted of a pep talk, a skit and lots of good cheerleading and yells. After our games we had dances for the students. We danced to the juke box in the cafeteria. Our faculty played an interesting game of basketball. Or was it really basketball? Our distinguished teachers made quite a sight on the basketball floor. Once again this year the ypcal groups of Wy'east High School opened the Spring season by presenting an Operetta entitled Meet Arizona . The story was about a lost will and took place on a dude ranch. The cast consisted of both mixed chorus and girls glee. Come One! Come All! Were the cries of the F.H.A. and the F.F.A. calling everyone to the annual barn dance which was held in the Ag shop. The queen and king were Iola Painter and Larry Moore who reigned over another successful and well remembered dance. The band of Carl Kaments' was heard by all those who attended the L.etterman's Dance. It was held at the Country Club the last Saturday in March. The hall was decorated in bright blue and gold streamers with gold eagles and sketches of sport players on the walls and tables. A buffet dinner was held for the dancers. Senior Senator Wayne Morse presented the student bodies of Hood Hiver, Cascade Locks, Mosier, and Wy'east a speech concerning Future Problems of Schools. The session was closed by questions from the students. Annually held is the Career Day which is sponsored by the Sophomore English classes. Nora Hounsel and Dale Mortenson were the co-chairmen under the leadership of Miss Pat Pendergast, sophomore Eng- lish teacher. Many local and out of town speakers were presented to us with information and guidance on the field of work in which they represented. Waltzes, Spirituals, Mambos, Marches, and Overtures were played by the beginning and advanced band at a Benefit Band Concert, Saturday April 2, 1955, under the direction of Miss Gay Simmons. All pro- ceeds went into the buying of new uniforms for the incoming students of next year. Miss Hazel Kusachi and Mr. Robert Brigham with the cooperation of their physical education classes presented their skill in tennis, dancing, basketball, and volleyball to the parents of Wv'east HighSchool Students. Swing Your Pcrrdners MUSIC The Wy'east Music Department, under the direction of Miss Gay Simons, was very active this year. A Christmas Cantata was presented for the public's enjoyment during the month of December. ln the spring a Dude Ranch Operetta Meet Ari- zona was given in good o1d western style. A double cast featured Judy Moen, Dale Mortenson, Myris Judd and Larry Dinsmoor portraying the main characters in the plot. A Benefit Band Concert was in the spotlight April 2. lt was sponsored by the P.T.A. and all proceeds went towards new band uniforms. Pastel formals accented the Spring Concert pre- sented in May. We were all proud to say, That's our band play- ing when they struck up a tune at the games. We would like to congratulate Miss Simons, the band and choruses on their excellent performances for the public and the school. Combined Bcmds DRAMA Joseph Kesselring's Arsenic and Old Lace , was a smashing hit when the Wy'east Student Body pre- sented it to the public on November l9th and 20th. The melodrama about the two sweet old ladies who, for a hobby, relieved people of the burdens of this world with a little arsenic, has been a constant pleasure to all ob- servers. Shocked, is a mild word for the impact on the younger generation when it is discovered that their aunts, both old maids, have already put 12 men in blissful rest. As the play progresses, Jonathan Brewster and Dr. Einstein, who are hiding from the law, come home and add another corpse to the steadily growing collection in the cellar. Anne Carr and Alice Absten had the leading roles as the two maids. Jack Donaldson, as Mortimer Brew- ster: Eugene Bol es, as Teddy Brewster: and Dan Steward, as Dr. Einstein, all gave outstanding per- tormances. The Senior class play Time Out for Ginger, was presented on April 29th and 30th. Alice Absten had the title role as Ginger with Mary Jo Smullin and Jack Donald- son in lead roles. Good-by Aunties. Well, I ccm't better my record now, but neither can you--at least I have that satisfaction. The score stands even, twelve to twelve. .JN Doctor-Hto my dear dead brother To the West!
