F o r e w o r d SENIOR CLASS OF 1962 You have arrived at a key milestone in your life. All of you will have to make a distinct adjustment to the new avenues which will open to you. If we have been, in even a small measure, successful here you leave carrying the tools necessary to your adjustment. Education is a tool, to be applied in solving new situations which arise and is never a panacea to solve or cure all those things which may confront you. We should apply a few more words to the old phrase, a person isn't educated until he realizes how little he knows. The phrase, and is willing to learn the things he needs to know. should be added. No person knows all that there is to know. The educated person, how- ever, at least should be aware of the gaps in his knowledge, be able to fill in those gaps and thus be better able to serve himself and his community. Above all make the acquaintance of good books above and beyond those used in for- mal education. This is one of the most important habits one can form. Read many books and above all, read good books. A democratic society is only as strong as its weakest individual. Let's build strong individuals through education so that the total structure of our way of life may be strengthened. I wish you a happy, full, and useful life. Ben Webb Contents THE HARVEST FIELDS.........................BUILDINGS HARVEST........................ We shall now stroll down the lane of reminiscence and look across the fields to days gone by, remembering the rain and sunshine that filled our hearts with gladness and made us grow. We shall never forget when we, as seedlings, started on a long journey - one that has reaped us many treasured memories and untold gains, and has led us to the harvest - graduation. In the fall of September, 1958, as the sun rose over the fields of Wurtland High one hundred and forty-six seedlings were transplanted to our bed; thus, beginning the last stage of our growth toward ma- turity. During that season our overseers were: Woodrow Creech, Jim Fletcher, Robert Haight, and Fred Smith. To them we are sincerely grateful for enabling us to look forward to our second year of growth. Our tillers that season were: President, Paul Scott; Vice-President, Donald Gumbert: Secretary and Treasurer, Charlie Bradford. One of our seedlings, Yetta Justice, blossomed during this season as Valentine Queen. As the end of the season grew near we had hopes that our roots had grown strong enough to support us for the hardships of our second year. Our second year of growth started in September, 1959, when one hundred and nineteen plants had managed to with- stand all hardships bestowed upon them. The sun seemed brighter as we entered the second season. We were proud that we had withstood the hardships in the fields of Wurtland High School. Our overseers that year were: Georgia May, and Betty Vaughn. They helped us to gain confidence in our growth toward harvest. Our tillers were: President, Yetta Justice; Vice-President, Doretha Stafford; Secretary, Betty Scott; Treasurer, June McCaleb. During this year another plant, Berta Scott, blossomed as Football Queen. In September 1960 ninety-six plants awaited in the fields, for the sun overhead was brighter and our roots were stronger, while we drank of the knowledge and prestige that we were to value for the rest of our lives. Our side crops that season were ones we enjoyed to the fullest extent. These included our junior play entitled Call Me Darling and the customary annual Junior-Senior prom with which we honored the Senior Class. Our overseers were: Shirley Hamilton. Sally Brafford and Paul Baker. We shall never forget their help and guidance in preparing us for our final season. Our tillers were: President, Roger Bellew; Vice President, Charlie Bradford; Secretary, Hubert Rose; Treasurer, Paul Scott. Two more of our plants blossomed that season, Syrilda Harris as Prom Queen and Betty Scott as Football Queen. On a beautiful sunlit day in September 1961, eighty-six nearly matured plants budded as full fledged Seniors! With the sun high above we enjoyed a feeling of contentment, for our ever nearing goal could now be seen. With a sigh of relief we now could well afford to relax. We were very well pleased with the success of our Senior Play entitled, Hillbilly Weddin. ” Our overseers were Mr. and Mrs. Layne Tackett, Glennis Liles, and Betty Porter. We thank them from the bottom of our hearts for their untiring help and guidance they have given us. Our tillers were: President, Doretha Stafford; Vice President, Charlie Bradford; Secretary, Yetta Justice; Treasurer, Paul Scott. Two of our plants blossomed this season, Rita Bradley as Miss Pioneer, and Sara Smith as Beta Club Queen. The sun is slowly setting - Victory is ours! We have never faltered, never failed in the conquest for our cherished goal. The day of the harvest has come, and though we may never again be planted to- gether, or pass through the gates of Wurtland High School as one, let us plant our feet on solid ground. For on the horizon looms the golden harvest moon - We can now, bravely and proudly, pursue the future with confidence.
