Our Class Log As a member of the graduating class of nineteen hundred and sixty one, I feel very honored to have been selected to give to you our class history and relive with you four of the happiest years of our lives. Our inspiration has been courage; our vitalitydetermination. Now we stop to unfold the past - our past of many carefree and cherished memories. In September 1957, a group of 165 freshmen enbarked on a long and treacherous voyage known as High School, our destination was Graduation. The crew was young and inexperienced and we had been warned the trip would be long and hard. We weathered many a strom during our first year aboard, but knowing many before us had won the same battle we were fighting we faced our bleak looking future with hope and determination. Our officers for the first year of our trip were: President Larry Joe Johnson, Vice-President Mike Hildebrandt, Treasurer Joyce Collier, and Secretary Mary Lou Smith. Our sponsors were Robert Haight, Glennis Liles, Gilbert Edwards and Fred Smith. One year later in September of 1958, 140 members were still aboard. The port of Sophomore had been reached and we were finally heading out to open sea. Behind us lay the fearful breakers and treacherous shoals that wreck so many just starting on this voyage. We felt the knowledge gained our first year aboard was paying off; so we faced our, somewhat brighter future, with more confidence and courage. The officers of our ship that year were: Pres- ident Gene Mullins, Vice-President Tommy McCaleb, Treasurer Tivis Potter, and Secretary Patty Colley. Our help came from our sponsors John Mayfield, Bernard Stacy, Georgia May, and Melvin Abney. September 1969, found 114 members at the port of Junior, very anxious to get started on the next leg of our trip. We felt more secure and was enjoy- ing our trip because we felt we were nearing our goal. We now had time for a little recreation and we found this in a play entitled A Fuedin Over Yon- der.” Our Junior and Senior Prom was held in the Blue Room of the Henry Clay Hotel. We thank our sponsors Joanna Washington, Carol O'Pell, and Joyce Ward for their untiring help and effort. Our officers for that year were: President Mike Hildebrandt, Vice-President Roy Virgin, Secretary Gene Mul- lins, Treasurer Rezin Virgin, and Reporter Bill Braden.

Now in September of 1960, at the port of Senior, we have 108 members still with us. The sea is calm and serene. They sky is fair. This is by far the best part of our voyage. Gone are all our doubts and fears. We now know how the ones who had passed this way before felt when they saw the shores of Graduation come into view. We knew our voyage was just about over when in late October we received our class rings. At this time we presented our class play entitled The Ghost House. Our ships log The Pioneer was com- pleted . To our sponsors Thelma Justice and Glennis Liles we give our sincere thanks for helping us complete this long voyage and winning our final goal. Our officers for this year are: President Mike Hildebrandt, Vice-President Roy Virgin, Secretary Gene Mullins, Treasurer Rezin Virgin, and Reporter Bill Braden. And now as we make our final appearance as high school seniors, it is with great reluctance we leave what has become so great a part of us. Look- ing back we recall how swiftly the past four years have flown, flown to the port of no return. Never again will the roll be called for the Senior Class of 1961, and as we go our own separate paths many will be the time we shall re- call happy memories of days long past. So with tears in our eyes and a tug at our heartstrings we say farewell - farewell Wurtland High - the one school of all the best. Beverly Enyart V
