Text from Pages 1 - 120 of the 1961 volume:

Welcome aboard, As you wander from page to page in our yearbook, we hope your journey is exciting and fun filled. We are proud of our accomplishment and we hope you will be too. It was exciting and fun planning this excursion for you, so Bon Voyage We, the senior class of 1960-61, humbly dedicate our yearbook, the Pioneer, to our beloved Mom and Dad. From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for everything you have ever done in making our lives what they are today. As we grow older we now see more clearly and understand more fully the things you have sacrificed for us. When we were too little to realize and too innocent to know what life was all about you begun our training. You saw for us the gifts of life you would have us possess and the pitfalls you would have us shun and faithfully worked towards that goal. Your faith in us has been the guiding star that led us safely when the night of temptation set in. May we al- ways do the things that would bring credit to you which you so fully deserve. May all your hard work, unselfishness, loving kindness never seem to you to have been given to us in vain. We know the memories of childhood years spent with you will always bring joy to our hearts, smiles to our lips and tears to our eyes as we realize the days we spent under your loving care were the happiest days of our lives and many will be the time we will wish with all our hearts we could again live everyday over with you. May we ask forgiveness for every heartache, every worry, and every deed of unkindness we may have done in ourcarefree years ofgrowing up. To say we are sorry doesn't seem to be enough, but we know you fully understand. To you, Mom and Day, who are no longer with us, as we proudly reach our first milestone in our life, we know somehow, somewhere you are watching and although we cannot see your dear smile or hear your voice we feel thd sunshine of your influence around us. Your memory is something time cannot erase. Do dear Mom and Dad each day through every year we love you, we honor you, we appreciate you. God bless you! Even though our parents have helped us to reach this goal, our high school gradua- tion, we could not have been the students and citizens we are today without our sponsors. Through this, our most trying year, they have stood beside us and guided us towards the land of adulthood. To you, Mrs. Glennis Liles and Mrs. Thelma Justice, we could also like to dedicate our yearbook. As each year passes after high school, we can look back and remember you and your guiding hand. This is the age of the new frontier and as we step forward to meet our obligations and responsibilities, we have you, our parents and sponsors, to thank for preparing us to be better in the future. Respectfully and lovingly yours. The citizens and parents of tomorrow. Dear Parents, To you, for your patience and understanding. we offer a tribute. Senior Class Officers President------ Vice-President Secretary----- Treasurer----- Reporter------- Mike Hildebrandt ------Roy Virgin ----Gene Mullins ----Rezin Virgin ------Bill Braden CLASS COLOR Red and White CLASS FLOWER Red Rose Our Class Log As a member of the graduating class of nineteen hundred and sixty one, I feel very honored to have been selected to give to you our class history and relive with you four of the happiest years of our lives. Our inspiration has been courage; our vitalitydetermination. Now we stop to unfold the past - our past of many carefree and cherished memories. In September 1957, a group of 165 freshmen enbarked on a long and treacherous voyage known as High School, our destination was Graduation. The crew was young and inexperienced and we had been warned the trip would be long and hard. We weathered many a strom during our first year aboard, but knowing many before us had won the same battle we were fighting we faced our bleak looking future with hope and determination. Our officers for the first year of our trip were: President Larry Joe Johnson, Vice-President Mike Hildebrandt, Treasurer Joyce Collier, and Secretary Mary Lou Smith. Our sponsors were Robert Haight, Glennis Liles, Gilbert Edwards and Fred Smith. One year later in September of 1958, 140 members were still aboard. The port of Sophomore had been reached and we were finally heading out to open sea. Behind us lay the fearful breakers and treacherous shoals that wreck so many just starting on this voyage. We felt the knowledge gained our first year aboard was paying off; so we faced our, somewhat brighter future, with more confidence and courage. The officers of our ship that year were: Pres- ident Gene Mullins, Vice-President Tommy McCaleb, Treasurer Tivis Potter, and Secretary Patty Colley. Our help came from our sponsors John Mayfield, Bernard Stacy, Georgia May, and Melvin Abney. September 1969, found 114 members at the port of Junior, very anxious to get started on the next leg of our trip. We felt more secure and was enjoy- ing our trip because we felt we were nearing our goal. We now had time for a little recreation and we found this in a play entitled A Fuedin Over Yon- der.” Our Junior and Senior Prom was held in the Blue Room of the Henry Clay Hotel. We thank our sponsors Joanna Washington, Carol O'Pell, and Joyce Ward for their untiring help and effort. Our officers for that year were: President Mike Hildebrandt, Vice-President Roy Virgin, Secretary Gene Mul- lins, Treasurer Rezin Virgin, and Reporter Bill Braden. Now in September of 1960, at the port of Senior, we have 108 members still with us. The sea is calm and serene. They sky is fair. This is by far the best part of our voyage. Gone are all our doubts and fears. We now know how the ones who had passed this way before felt when they saw the shores of Graduation come into view. We knew our voyage was just about over when in late October we received our class rings. At this time we presented our class play entitled The Ghost House. Our ships log The Pioneer was com- pleted . To our sponsors Thelma Justice and Glennis Liles we give our sincere thanks for helping us complete this long voyage and winning our final goal. Our officers for this year are: President Mike Hildebrandt, Vice-President Roy Virgin, Secretary Gene Mullins, Treasurer Rezin Virgin, and Reporter Bill Braden. And now as we make our final appearance as high school seniors, it is with great reluctance we leave what has become so great a part of us. Look- ing back we recall how swiftly the past four years have flown, flown to the port of no return. Never again will the roll be called for the Senior Class of 1961, and as we go our own separate paths many will be the time we shall re- call happy memories of days long past. So with tears in our eyes and a tug at our heartstrings we say farewell - farewell Wurtland High - the one school of all the best. Beverly Enyart V Who’s Who D.A.R.
