Together we have traveled from the first strange and exciting path to our own broad road of graduation. The pavement of this road has been made to shine with the many glorious experiences we have shared. Our inspiration has been cour- age; our vitality determination. Now we stop and unfold the past - our past of many carefree and cherished memories. The first small but essential path was awaiting us and 136 curious freshmen sought its contents. We firmly placed our unsure feet upon its opportunities. After the first confusing steps we became accustomed to this new adventure. We were organized and divided into two sections. Mrs. Glennis Liles and Mr. Gilbert Edwards were our sponsors. We elected class officers in each section. In section A , Wanda Hensley, President; Patty Braden, Vice President; and Anita Bradley, Secretary-Treasurer; sec- tion B , Evelyn Johnson, President; Joe Mullins, Vice President; Earl Spears, Treasurer; and Yvonne Patton, Secretary. Spring came and our steps had led us to the end of our freshman school term. How many would fail to return the following year we could not foretell. Forward! was our cry, as 114 marching sophomores came to continue the inevitable journey of our prospective goal. We stepped highly into our positions, armed ourselves with books, and used failure as our enemy. We separated our forces into three homerooms and our leaders were; Mrs. Elsie Worthington, Mrs. Georgia May, and Mr. Paul Smith. We took action im- mediately and chose our officers; section A”, Earl Spears, President; Joe Mullins, Vice President; and Anita Bradley, Secretary-Treasurer. We with- stood surrender through the long, cold winter. Then early in May came the unanimous decision of victory. Yes, we fought for an education; always a winning battle. Encouraged by our previous success, 96 humble juniors waited at the bend of the road. We looked into the future and saw our mission was only halfway completed. Then we subdued our uncertainty and stealthily crept beyond the daring bend. Our sponsors were : Mrs. Frances Reed and Mrs. Pearl Clark. We selected our class officers for the year; Carol Hennecke, President; Nadine Baumgardner, Vice President; Rose Elswick, Secretary; and Heyward Nickell, Treasurer. We worked especially hard to prepare the annual junior-senior prom. We used as our theme April Showers and were extremely pleased with our prom queen, Miss Wands Hensley. This seemed to be a year of queens for us when Miss Patty Braden received the honors of Basketball Queen and Miss Wurtland High School. We pre- sented our junior play Stranger in the Night and were overwhelmed with its success. The end of our junior year arrived; leaving each member of our class triumphant. To quit now would be admitting defeat. Listen! Do you hear those faint footsteps? They are the footsteps of only 80 returning seniors, strutting down Graduation Road for the final time. Our sponsors, Mrs. Thelma Justice and Mrs. Glennis Liles, have capably guided us through our senior year. Our class officers were; Joe Mullins, President; Heyward Nickell, Vice President; Cynthia Potten, Sec- retary; Douglas Virgin, Treasurer; and Nadine Baumgardner, Reporter. One of our most exciting experiences was receiving our class rings. We presented three one-act comedies Wildcat Willie and were pleased with the results. We elected our class colors red and white and our motto strangers are friends we have not yet met. Now our Graduation Road is almost completed; together we look into the future with quiet eyes. Dear world, you have many roads and we are separately approaching them. You hold our lives in your arms. As we say farewell to our friends, teachers, and look at Wurtland High for the last time, let your judgment be lenient. Let our conquests be to strive, to seek, to find, and to yield. Place us upon your highest road and help us to find our positions in society. We of Armco believe that our young people are facing a future that will present opportunities never before equaled in the history of our na- tion. Every day new frontiers are being opened in science, industry and education. The need for trained personnel has never been so great as it is today. Our schools will have provided you with an opportunity for some training.
