Wright School for Girls was established primarily as a college preparatory institution. Therefore the academic program is dedicated largely to this purpose. The Superintendent and the Dean, in planning the course of study, give first consideration to the demands of college curricular. Each faculty member is in close contact with the newest developments in the areas of his course, and provides classroom experiences through which students may become proficient in basic subject information and skill. Throughout the school a climate favorable to the highest level of achievement is maintained. Classes are small enough to permit individual consideration yet of sufficient size to engage in group activities. A splendid library invites both research and leisure reading. Labora- tories are well equipped with apparatus and other materials essential to demonstration and experimentation. A modern auditorium-gymnasium is readily adaptable to formal assemblies, plays, concerts, lectures, teas, dances, and sports. The Superintendents and the Dean's offices are open at all times to parents, students, and faculty for serious conferences, patient discipline, understanding guidance, or just informal chats. This climate is the direct result of our unity of purpose and cooperative effort - to the end that we may acquire knowledge, and the ability to enlarge that knowledge beyond high school. xv 5 ,f 4 c ,f We , Mail! www A as S M. , . Since it is recognized that education is a way of life rather than a body of memorized facts, the basic purpose of all school experience is understanding and practicing the principles of efficient study. Achieving this objective is the responsibility of both the school with its faculty and the student with her home. At school, home-room periods are designated for learning the best study methods - concentrating, read- ing with speed and comprehension, taking notes, con- sulting reference materials, taking tests, using flash cards, reviewing regularly, organizing and presenting reports. Such general principles are further practiced in each course, with specific techniques emphasized as they are applicable to the subject. Standardized tests help to eval- uate our efforts and make improvements. Practicing study techniques until they are established as habits must become the duty of the student at home. Our more successful students have learned to plan their work, to study intelligently for permanent retention, and to become scholastically self-reliant and competent. V.-,421 ,Ma W. ? Mrs. Butler teaches her seventh grade English class how to say, I go, in all persons and numbers. Comprehension and expression, the goals of all language study, are achieved in a variety of ways: through the principles of grammar and usage, through the examples of good literature, through formal and in- formal writing and speech. Especially do we stress the power and charm of words - from kindergarten through high school. In so doing we early recognize the indebtedness of English to other languages. Two of these are included in the program of all students. French, begun in the first grade, in addition to its many cultural and practical advantages, has a peculiar place in our school, since the history of our city is almost a chapter in the history of France. The clarity and ex- pressiveness of the language is a stimulus to our own, and the French masterpieces thrill us again and again as we revel in our adventures with them. Latin, although studied formally only in high school, very early reveals to us that we actually begin this still-lively language when we are introduced to our own. Latin vocabulary and grammatical principles are so closely related to those of English that our language con- cepts are strengthened by association. Classical allusions give an opportunity to interpret and fix meanings. Our three languages keep us aware of one of our greatest opportunities-understanding the thoughts of others and helping them to understand ours. Through the dry barren wilderness with the He- brew Nationg along the drab halls of a medieval English castleg with Williaiim at the Battle of Hastingsg beside Columbus when he sighted landg near Hancock as he penned his famous nameg at Shiloh, Bull Run and Ap- pomatoxg with the Wright brothers at Kittyhawk, with the invading force in Normandy, in Congress with our representatives - studying history has taken us all these places. In our history, civics and geography courses we have studied men of all a es - their roblems, needs 3 and hopes. Through this study we have gained under- standing of men today. Especially we have been conscious of our govern- ment and its complexities. We have had a chance to observe one of the vital functions of democracy -- voting. This year, the Centennial of the War between the States, brings other significance to stude of history. Witli our Superintendent, Mr. Delaney, being on the Alabama Centennial Commission, we have found this study of peculiar personal interest. Through history we have attained not only know- ledge, but also understanding - understanding that better prepares us to add our chapter in its advancement. Through biology, chemistry and general science, we learn the intricate laws that govern our life processes and environment. ln algebra and geometry we find that almost every achievement is based on mathe- matics - radar, construction, network communication, irrigation, flood control, atomic energy and the study of space. First and second-year algebra, plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry are available to any am- bitious student. Through the biological and physical sciences, we explore the myriad secrets that nature holds for man, from the smallest one-cell animal to our vast universe. HOW DO WE DE ELOP Although formal subjects are academically stimulating and enjoyable, more active classes provide the perfect complement to our regular curriculum. Increasing in interest this year has been the music pro- gram, under the direction of Mrs, Harry Thomson. Through the bi-weekly music appreciation class, we have gained knowledge of both modern and classical compositions. Special chorus, a vol- untary organization, works diligently to bring music closer to us. A class that combines learning with enjoyment and activity, Physical Education, is one of the best loved. Softball, volleyball, basketball and archery are a few of the sports studied. Health, First Aid and Home Nursing are offered to pupils from the third grade through high school. Besides improving coordination, physical education gives relaxation and eases tensions. All these subjects - music, physical education and speech - work together to produce the best college materialg for health and well-being are important factors. Through our college coun- seling seminars, we learn of the personal and social ad- justments that are often required in becoming acclimated. We study the colleges in which we have some interest and try to decide intelligently upon the one to which we should apply. There is also considerable attention given to career opportunities for women. Profiles of freshman characteristics in various schools are studied. Our library maintains a shelf of over two-hundred catalogs, brochures, and yearbooks of outstanding colleges throughout the country. Representatives are frequent speakers at our seminars. Many of us visit colleges for interviews and personal glimpses of classroom and campus activities. Some of our students enroll in summer classes to become adjusted to the stronger demands of the curriculum before undertaking a full program in the fall. Now that we have alumnae who are finishing their sophomore years in college, we call upon them for advice, and find their successes encouraging and inspiring. The Deans office is a veritable bureau of informa- tion concerning college board examinations, applications, scholarships, and other matters which we may need to help us enter the college where we may find our greatest opportunities. 3. SENIORS During the years at Wright, we expressed our love for each other through fun and fellowship. Class trips became a tradition. As Freshmen we sold red and gray teddy bears, and the blissful moment our I.Q. tests were com- pleted, we formed a caravan for Gulf Hills Dude Ranch. As Sophomores we began our traditional school- wide talent show to raise money for a four-day tour of Florida. Once there, we sailed in glass bottom boats at Silver Springs, dressed our patient driver in a wig of golden curls, and swam in the Atlantic at night. The junior year brought many fund-raising proj- ects. Selling, selling, selling - every commodity from home-made fudge squares and talent show tickets to several thousand light bulbs, in order to vacation at Long Beach, treat our Freshman little sisters to a party, and give the second graduating class a Junior-Senior banquet. And then we were Seniors, the pinnacle in gray checks, redecorating the Senior lounge, having Shakespeare parties, and planning our last talent show together. We attended myriad parties, the high- light being the faculty luncheon. Final examination, locker cleaning, last minute dress fitting, rehearsals for vespers and graduation - but the significance and impact was not experienced until the night in May we received our diplomas before our parents and friends. Our love for each other was enriched through service to our school, which we have exhibited in all activities from giving up part of lunch each day for glee club, to cheering vigorously at intramurals. In white vestments we gave our junior Thanks- giving choral reading. As Seniors we had numerous French play rehearsals for the Father-Daughter sup- per, creating a Parisian atmosphere by stuffing our- selves with pastries and grape-juice champagne. At Christmas we combined our holiday spirit for the lighting of the school candle. There were many other moments. Perhaps some of those not mentioned here will remain longest in our hearts. If a charm test were given at Wfright, everyone knows who would win. Wfhy, the juniors, of course, though it would be a close race! Never a more eager group of girls could be found. Filled with enthusiasm. we strong- ly supported all functions. Our presidential campaign will never be forgotteng for in our own charming way, Nixon and Kennedy supporters practically annihilated one an- other. Forever in the hearts of Juniors will be Little Sister Week. Adorned in bibs, rib- bons and candy lipstick, Freshmen had a riotous five days of fun. After myriad hours of thought and plan- ning, we gave the most thrilling junior-Sen- ior banquet ever. Entranced Seniors could hardly believe there could be such food and entertainment. To us it was a real achieve- ment, for we had planned super-sales schemes months before, to earn the money. By hostessing many social events and by decorating for graduation, we tried to prove that juniors had acquired that intangible glow called charm. What if we do almost arrive in curlers each morning and peek into the mirror at every opportunity? We just want to be sure that we look our best. We do not strive for outward appearance alone. We try to be thoughtful, poised, self-reliant, cheerful, and kind. There is no lack of beauty at school wherever we look-in good literature, in the amazing wonders of science, in the principles of mathematics, in the sound of music, in creative art. So, in case we fail to become really useful, we can always adopt as our motto the comforting line: Beauty is its own excure for being. Each year these goals change, ours for 1960-1961 being to win the respect of others in our school. Through examples of kindness, friendship, courtesy, and leadership, we have worked to gain our first ob- jective-winning the respect of other classes. Having left our once-full piggy banks empty and securing numerous old clothes from our families, we have given generously to charitable organizations throughout the year, our contribution to the United Fund being the largest in our school. Voices become hoarseg feet and hands, tired. But hearts were always happy at UMS games and school intramurals. Our second objective was to win the respect of our teachers through outstanding work and achievements. ln civics We have gone on many exciting, educational field trips, on which we have attained the ambition of becoming better citizens in and out of school. Besides being informative, our annual class trip has been a week- end of excitement for everyone. Gaining the respect of our classmates was our hardest objective. In homeroom meeting we have learned consideration of the others opinions and ideasg refraining from interruptions was always difficult. We selected the prettiest flowers and cards to send to those who were sick. Although there is no test whereby we can see if we have gained the respect of our entire school, we do know that we have attained one of the most important goals - self-respect. Spelling bees become tense when only three girls are left standing. IS UNDERSTANDING After six long years of waiting we finally arrived at that delightful destination-junior High School. Though not quite so different as we expected, one thing we learned is that understanding and appreciation are key factors in a successful life. Since our class was so small we became very close and enjoyed many social activities together. We co- operated readily with the various classes and clubs at Wright. This year we charmed many a dubious customer into buying huge chocolate bars for the Special Chorus. We gladly helped the yearbook plan our class pictures, in every way from wearing our P.J.'s in the gym to building human pyramids. More than anything else we enjoyed playing volleyball with Mrs. Leeth. A very active and vivacious group, we found it a marvelous Way to combine fun and learning. We have learned to appreciate not only our teachers and classmates, but also the purpose of our school. Our earnest desire is that we might be girls that Wright would be proud to claim, that through our understand- ing we might support our school in becoming A1abama's finest. :ww-zsmwwtzrv.. .. ,ff ...W ,----- aa-fu....nm,. ,,,,. ' 0 SIXTH GRADE IS COURTEOUS Long before we became Sixth Graders, we learned a little rhyme that has become our motto in achieving courtesy: Politeness is to do and say the kindest thing in the kindest way. Authorities on etiquette agree, too, that good manners are really just thoughtful con- sideration of other people. In the busy schedule of our day at school. with the many, many duties that we perform, and all the different people with whom we work, sometimes we feel that we hardly have time for courtesy. Fifth graders are almost grown-up and have learned the qualities of lady-like character. We believe that integrity, or sincerity, is one of the very best traits that we can acquire. In our school work we are truthful in dis- cussing problems with our parents and teachers, so that they will know what our needs are and can help us to become good students. When we study together, we try to remember that we must help each other and not just copy someone's work to get by one more day. W'e also try to be honest with ourselves and develop our consciences so that they will help us to know when we are sincere. We are forming friendships that we hope will last all our lives, so we are honest in our conversations and in our thoughts about each other. Sometimes little rivalries and perhaps jealousies arise, but they are not very large temptations when we think how much we want to respect each other and our- selves. Our geography bulletin board is filled with pictures of Even though many say the world is going to pieces, we try every section of America. to put it back together. But we soon learned that it meant 'busyf' And Mrs. Aubey helped us understand its meaning by seeing that we practiced regular- ly. With two new subjects, history and geography, added to our schedule, we left school every day carrying arms full of books-just like the high school girls. At home we busied ourselves with assignments, trying to use good study habits and learn our subjects well. We were busy in other ways too-keeping our room in ,, orderg going on field tripsg planning parties for ourselves 4 f-v- and kindnesses for others. Thanksgiving and Christmas were I -lvv on A the most fun, when we filled our gift bags for Goodwill In- H Q T dustries. We feel like feal affisfs with Ouf mocks and Through this year one of the best lessons that we have brushes' learned is that industrious also means happy All of us enjoy singing, even Mrs. Aubey. Though our star-spangled banner only flies over a peaceful third grade, it is just as loved as if it were in danger. 62 THIRD GRADE Most people think there are only twenty-six girls in the third grade, but there are really twenty-seven. Of course, this extra girl is not real, she is only a poor paper and wire dummy, but in our imagination she is almost as alive as our adored teach- er, Mrs. Tate. Never absent or tardy, she can always be found standing near the door, ready to welcome all who might enter our exciting world of wonder and fancy. Instead of our uniform gray and white, her costume often changes. Through our imagina- tion she has undergone many drastic changes: from a wierd Hal- loween witch, to a pious Pilgrim, to Mrs. Santa Claus, to a happy Easter Bunny. Through this year she has watched us learn many things. She has seen how carefully we hold our pencils and paper when we write, as if they were a soft white bunny rabbit that we should not squeeze or hurt. She has observed our growing in- terest in health and science, which we studied the first time this year. She would say that there was never a more excited group of girls when we went on our field trip, and she laughed with us when we discussed all the wonderful and new things we learned She worried too when Mrs. Tate wrote our name in her green book, for we all knew that someone had received those dreaded demerits, which are for only very bad girls. When does paper and wire become a real person or demerit books a fearful monster? All these wonderful things happen at that imaginative age when we are nine! Mrs. Tate shows us that it's easy as pie to add fractions, 1 Debbie Abell Pat Altmayer Curry Bedsole Grace Boykin Karen Breunig Marilyn Broadus Barbara Brothers Ann Brown Laurie Downing Grace Eskridge Mary Lou Grady Pamela Haidt Debbie Hartwell Sarah Kyle jo Ann Magnes Nancy Metzger Rebecca North Tammy Olen Karen Outlaw Brenda Pierce IS IMAGINATIV , 1 a- - tri.-,af ,, :-If ,. In our room we have desks, cigar boxes, and cub- by holes so that everything can be kept in its proper place, and our tables will have just the things that we are using. Everyone knows where all her books, crayons, papers, and pictures are. We are neat in doing our duties too and take our turns when they come. Especially in the lunch room, we try to be careful so that our table will be pleasant. With our big new pencils we practice printing every day. 66 v.Y - E KI NESS We in the First Grade have to learn to work together quietly. We have learned not to disturb others, for some of our classmates have lessons at tables and others in a semi-circle. Wfe must not disturb them. Wfe know the reason for this and must learn to mind ourselves so Miss Hunter won't have to take time-out to help us remember. If we forget to keep the kind-quietl' rules, we help each other by quietly putting a finger on our lips. In this way we are not only the teachers assistant, but are kind to our friends. We help each other to learn and can all wear smiles and have happy hearts. When we blend sounds so we can recognize words, it is im- portant to hear with our ears, see with our eyes, and feel with our lips and tongue. When we help each other do this, the funny wheels inside our heads go around properly and the right word comes tumbling out. If we learn to look carefully, enunciate dis- tinctly, and hear correctly, we will be able to figure out new words by the rules we have learned. Then we will all be good readers. Do you see why we should be kind to each other, to our- selves, and to Miss Hunter? Anticipating glances show hopes that Santa knows we have been good girls. Long before the actual beginning of the school year, the Council was functioning, during the summer, members attended the A.A.S.C. convention in Gadsden, and the workshop in Montgomery. These occasions helped them, by broadening their views for the year ahead, to gain a knowledge of the operation of other schools. The first semester began enthusiastically with the Council-sponsored orientation party, which enabled new students to get acquainted. Since that first successful project, Council has sponsored many stimulating and worthwhile events: the Father-Daughter Supper, the After-Exams Party, Religious Emphasis Week, Senior-Faculty Volleyball Game, Citizenship Week, and Christmas gifts to our own custodians as well as to the Mulherin Home. These happy events will be long-remembered, having contributed greatly to one of the most unforgettable years in our history. This spirit was typical of last year's staff and their achievement-the creating of a prize-winning yearbook. The most honored position in the Wrightor- ium, our little workshop, is reserved for our cherished plaque, awarded by the Alabama High School Press Association. We think that this year the Wrigbtorian has given us all a great opportunity, not only to know the student body and the faculty, but also to meet the gen- erous and progressive Mobile businessmen. We dis- cussed with them financial budgets, advertising methods and sales techniques. One of our most rewarding experi- ences came with the realization that we were accepted as adult businesswomen. In addition to financial enterprises, we all par- ticipated in editorial work-planning a theme, de- signing a layout, holding conferences, writing copy, counting characters and proofreading. Many other valuable lessons and happy memories have come to us from our staff days- but best of all, we have learned to plan together and to respect each others achievements. New booklet- style literary publication containing student writings! Heralding the news even better than its ancient namesake, the Triton contains fashion tips, and articles by students. Edited by enthusiastic young writers, it has been repre- sented at the National Newspaper Wleek and Alabama Press Association Conference, where we learned many new hints on enlarging and improving publication. We have held several promotion cam- paigns, the best-liked being the drive for original compositions. Poems, rhymes, stories and essays were entered. The happy faces of winners were seen beneath Triton covers, admiring their own work in type. just as the mythological Triton served well the ancient god of the sea, so our own Triton has proved to be an active herald for our school. Recently gaining membership in the Alabama Association of Art Clubs, we are becoming strongly organized by our sponsor, Mrs. Westerfield. On field trips we have inspected the charming architecture of Oakleigh, scrutinized the modern style of University Military School, and marveled at the dignified beauty of the jewish Temple. Many hopeful members entered drawings in the Opera Guild poster contest and the Allied Arts Festival. SCIE TISTS PROBE FUR ANSWERS ln the Sigma Delta Sigma Science Club, named for Schweitzer, Dooley, and Salk, are inquisitive, busy experimenters. Amid a maze of test tubes, burners, scales, and other apparatus, we made replicas of Wil- son's cloud chamber, grew hydroponicsg and achieved fascinating crystals, always with a keen eye for the rare perfect one. We decomposed water by electrolysis, and learned reduction by chemically separating metallic oxides. We surveyed minute matter through micro- scopes, studied astronomy, and even discussed the possibility of reincarnation and intuition. Top winners from our fair competed at Spring Hill College in the county-wide exhibit. Living in a world of myriad discoveries and tech- nical advancements evolving from research of dedicated scientists, we feel that our club is helping us to become informed, alert citizens. Final promptings over, back-stage jitters forgotten, costumes and make-up donned for the last time, the play begins. The drama being unfolded is a biography, the story of the 1960-1961 Pierrette Club. Many dramatic episodes form the prelude to the thrilling finale: visiting the Joe Jefferson rehearsals, bringing a Shakespearean reader to our stage, and learning acting techniques. The stage has been swept without broomsg invisible characters have been addressed, and tea has been poured into imaginary cups. Reading innumerable scripts led to the choice of Pmle rim! With this motto, how could the Latin Club avoid the great enjoyment that we achieve in everything we do? Under the direction of Mrs. Frase, this new organization has already enrolled as a member of the National Junior Classical League and is busy promoting the sometimes- named dead language to a livelier state in Mobile. The Romans- their art, literature, their civi- lization-are the special subject of our studies and programs. Gut classroom exhibits their ancient lore. Our pronunciation and usage are greatly strengthened by informal Latin conversationsg so that we have gained a friendly interest in this language. Many of us hope to continue the study in college and to increase our knowledge of classical literature. BIBLE CLUB IS INSPIR T10 A As one of the oldest, largest, and 1TlOSt- loved organizations at Wright, the Bible Club has spent another active and interesting year studying the worlds greatest book. Begun five years ago under the direction of Mrs. Murphy, we claim membership from girls of all faiths, with our studies being restricted to no one religion. After reviewing the Old Testament by means of outlining, we studied the epistles of Paul, and have learned to appreciate this book not only as a literary achievement but as a spiritual inspiration for all. Bible games, matching and true-false quizzes, made our study more lively. Members participated in the junior Chamber of Commerce Christmas shopping tour for orphans. We also helped present an assembly program on the World Day of Prayer. On special occasions we ended our meetings with a social hour, where doughnuts and cokes were our favorite refreshments. Because of the nonsec- tarian nature of our Bible Club, all students feel a strong relationship to the purpose of the group and to the spirit it fosters. Also because of the nature of This Book we find personal and individual enlightenment and guidance. -...X 'fx S 'Bw Iizril Row: Sponsor Mrs. Murphy, Zoe Moore, Celeste Hodges, Christine Mortensen, Elanor Frierson, Becky Berglin, Lisette Hays. .S't'mm1' Rf7II',' Gillian Brewer, Judy Shaeffer, Bruce Wilder, Bonnie Howell, Carolyn llskridge, Clara Leder Ladd, Nancy McCall. Scholarship, Leadership, Character, Service -these words will always hold a special significance for us, because they have been our watch-words as we have tried to exemplify their attributes in the Julia Tutwiler Chapter of the National Honor Society. We believe that Scholarship is of special impor- tance because we are primarily a college preparatory school, and are gratified that the aggregate record of all members reveals an average of well above ninety. Leadership is a peculiar opportunity because, due to our limited enrollment, it is possible for each stu- dent to hold a maximum of responsibilities. Almost every chapter member holds a top elective office in another organization. Service is a matter of personal and civic pride in Mobile. Long before we were given the Torch of the National Honor Society, we had been taught that such an emblem is best interpreted by those who are actively concerned for the welfare of others. at . at Q, '. In late October this year we treated our fathers to an evening of entertainment in gui Pmfii. Two mademoiselles in short ballerina costumes greeted each couple with Bomoir, and a boutonniere for every father. After dinner, served buffet style, Seniors presented a cafe skit completely en fmncair including the pastries the girls rapidly devoured. Monsieur Sonnier, master of ceremonies, sang two songs for us, closing with the spirited French national anthem, La Mazffreillrziref' In the springtime a young girl's fancies turn not only to love but also to gaily designed hats of the newest styles. At our annual Tea in May, mothers and daughters alike arrived in pastel chapeaux com- plementing the pink table decorations and bouquets of flowers. A receiving line composed of Mrs. Boaz- man and alternating officers met each guest at the door. Amid the greetings and friendly chatter, students served trays filled with delicious cakes and sandwiches. Other social affairs may be scheduled but these two parties are the ones which all of us love best. Mr. P. E. Sonnier's fluency in the French language makes him the perfect master of cere- monies. S ,,f-f'- 'L 1--- or X., Seniors and fathers, having a special table, eagerly await others to begin dinner. 7 ,M 1 French flower vendors, Peg and Beth, greet all fathers at the door. Wreatlis, mistletoe, stars-decorations everywhere! Smiles and good cheer on every face! Songs and readings by all ages! Parties in class- rooms and offices! Goblins and witches invade every haunt- able spot in broad daylight for Halloween. Indians and Pil- grims feast together at Thanksgiving. Santa Claus arrives early to be on hand for all Christmas celebrations. Bells jingle gayly through the halls, and red bows are bobbing to the tune of favorite carols. The atmosphere of jollity is in- dicative of a greater joy in every girl, because long before parties and fun are planned, the happiest part of Thanks- giving and Christmas is under way-the offering of some gift to our less fortunate friends. Wlieix we have considered mthers first, our hearts are just right for real fun. 6 Y We eip? Climax of the Christmas sing is the Ceremony of Candles presented by the Seniors.
