In celebration of his anniversary, the 1987-88 yearbook is being dedicated to him. When Mr. Charlton began his teaching career in Wright City, he was one of ten teachers at the school. Even though the school population has grown over the years, he claimed that his classes have basically remained the same size. Mr. Charlton attended Murray State University, in Murray Ken- tucky. His major area of study in college was business. His deci- sion to teach business education was made in high school. Some people consider Mr. Charlton a difficult teacher, but he feels that he is a typical business teacher. Since his classes are electives, he feels that the students are there because they chose to be and they decide their grades by the efforts they put forth on their studies. Being a business teacher, Mr. Charlton often notices typing or other errors — like those in the daily announcements, for exam- ple. He admitted that he has, on occasions, brought these errors to the attention of the office. All in good humor, of course. Mr. Charlton claimed that he feels very proud when a student who has been in one of his classes decides upon a business major in college or a business related job. He also added some advice for prospective shorthand students: eat, sleep, and drink shorthand, if you want to do well. Mr. Charlton feels that Wright City High School does a good job in preparing its students for college. He said that the size of the school limits a wider variety of classes, but the size also allows for a better teacher student relationship than it would if the school were larger. Even though the school population has greatly increased since he first began teaching, the need for additional business teachers has not been necessary and he does not feel that it ever will. Mr. Charlton stated that he has been very happy with his job here in Wright City and he has no future plans of retirement. He said he plans on teaching for at least another fifteen years or so 1985- 19S4 1982-1983 1978-1979 4 1968-1969 1987-1988 1971-1972 COUNTING THE MINUTES BEFORE BUS DUTY FIGURING GRADES In 1965-1966, the echo yearbook was dedicated to Mr. Charlton. YEARS AT W.C.H.S. jJlJU TAKING A BREAK THAT OCCASIONAL SMILE SAME DIRECTIONS DIFFERENT YEAR 5 FRIENDS A person’s high school years should he the most important time of their lives. It is time for learning, a time for growing up, and certainly a time to remember! We will never want to forget these years as long as we live. This yearbook was put together for that reason, to capture those special memories. I hope that 10 years from now you can look back in this yearbook and remember all those special times that you shared with your friends. Regardless if those times were good or bad we have all learned about life from our experiences in our high school years. We should not rush our high school days because once they are over they are gone and we will be out in the real world looking out for ourselves. We will no longer depend on our parents to protect us from our wrongs. I hope that everyone enjoys this yearbook as much as I have enjoyed help put it together. I would also like to congratulate the rest of the yearbook staff on a job well done. Hold on to these memories and DISCOVER THE MOMENT!!!! Tricia Dixon Editor Being co-editor of the yearbook brings on more responsibility. There is no time to goof around in between deadlines because I have alot more pages to do. It also means that your pages are expected to be turned in on time, no matter what. This could mean that you do most of the work by yourself in order to get it finished. We wish all of them the best of luck in the future. 21 Jamie Pauk enjoys the meet. JR. HIGH BASKETBALL Waiting for the rebound. Running down the court with the ball in their hands and the opponent after them is the way the Wright CityJr. High Girls Basketball played. The team consisted of 6 seventh graders and 5 eighth graders. They had a nice season thanks to the help of their coach, Sandy Christopher. They worked very hard and learned alot about the game and also about sportsmanship. Heather Williams explains, We played good as a team and the seventh graders learned a lot this year. Coach Christopher pre- pared us well for next year in high school basketball. Good luck to all the Jr. High Cats! 22 Front: Theresa Wilding, Jenni Bauer. Tracy Frischman. Al- though they are not on the same team, they don't always play at the same time. The seventh graders al- most never play with the eighth grad- ers. Behind the team that good, there has to be a coach. This team’s coach is Mr. Gary Farris. When asked what he felt about this season, he com- mented, ”We had a very successful season. We didn’t win a lot of games but we became better basketball players. We improved enough through the course of the year, to the point that we will be ready to begin next year with a lot of enthusiasm The players of the team had to work hard all season. Their season was so short so they didn V get to play much ball, but they did improve very much. When asked how the team did a couple of players had no comments but a couple did. Mr. Overlander was also an elemen- tary principal for 6 years, a Jr. High counselor for four years, and a Psychology teacher for two years. It may take a while for the W.C.H.S. to get used to all the changes but we're going to do the best we can to make him feel welcome! Good luck in the years to come from the yearbook staff of 1987-88. Maurice Overlander Superintendent Talk about a hectic day! It takes alot of patience and earplugs to drive a bus. I like being the sponsor of this group because I get a chance to see my kids out of the classroom. After all, it's not everyday you see kids trying flautas, chimichangas, or flan. I'm really looking forward to going back to Casa Gallardo again next year! Beverley Martin, a Senior this year, remarks, I really enjoy FLC. It gives you a chance to learn new things and try new and different types of food, when we go out to eat. Facing the fact that many stu- dents of W.C.H.S. go out on the week- ends and are faced with the drinking and driving situation, it is a good idea to have a place for students to come and discuss their feelings and hard- ships. Miss Stetson, the organization's sponsor quotes, The SADD organiza- tion has grown since last year. The stu- dents in the organization feel very strongly about the drinking and driving problem in today's society. Our future goal for the coming year is to establish drug-free parties. 38 Miss Stetson prepares for a S.A.D.D. meeting. She started it by giv- ing out contracts to all of her students and letting every one know about it in the announce- ments. All you had to do was sign a contract saying that you wouldn't get any tardees, ab- sences for a quarter, and to maintain a C average. It was for which ever one you wanted to sign for. This year P.A.W. is a new club joined to W.C.H.S. If you go a quarter without break- ing any of your contracts, then Mrs. Schellman will either take you to the park, out for pizza, or on various trips. It just goes to show that positive action does work! Thank you Mrs. Schellman for bringing our the positiveness in the students. 41 bottom l-r, Suzie McBride, Rhonda Talley, Matt Robinett, 2nd row; Mary Kay Spires, Jill Sherman, 3rd row; Theresa Schellman (sponsor), Gina Blanks, Sandy Tinsley, Holly Williams, Davon Turner, top row; Kim Johnson, Michelle Burton, Jennifer McDaniel. The runners were tenth grader Brian Gleire and ninth graders Melissa Huff and Kevin Mouser. The coach for Cross Country was Debbie Wilding. I think our ream has done very well this year in spite of all the injuries we had. Cross Country is a very demanding sport which takes a lot of endurance and time, ’’stated Brian. Melissa quoted, Life is in the fast lane when you're on the Cross Country team. I had a great time this year in Cross Country. It was my freshmen year and I'm sure I'll be back for three more years of running. The team was small, but it was still great fun and there was plenty of team spirit. It was a very interesting year, Kevin added. Debbie Wilding stated. Cross Country is a lonely sport in more than one way. Our team sire was down from previous years and running is a self-discipline sport. I give a lot of credit to those team members who completed the season. They worked hard and learned a great deal. I feel the Jr. High meet held in October was a step in building the pro- gram for next year. 60 SOFTBALL The 1987-88 school year had many advancements and additions to the Wright City School curricu- lum. One of the most successful was the girls softball team, which was lead to a .500 season by Coach Dan Springman and Sue Wright. The softball team was the result of the cumulative efforts of the coaches, school, and dedicated group of girls. The lady Wildcats had to over- come a lack of experience, in many of the positions on the team; this was achieved through a lot of dedication, hardwork, and team- work. The high point of the sea- son was an 8 to 5 victory over the top seated team in our District. This gave us a chance to play in the championship game. With the result of coming in 2nd at dis- tricts. Gina Blanks quotes ''No I look a mess. ‘ Just Chill in,' wards. says Robert and Kathy Ed- Everyday at 3:10 students rush out of their classes happy because school is finally over for the day. 3:10 is like a mad rush hour be- cause traffic is so heavy and every- one is trying to beat the buses out of the parking lot. After school most students go uptown to Neva's Ice Cream parlor where they might get a soda or just talk and have a good time. Other students go to work or go home and do their homework that our loving teachers give us. Then there are those students who live at the school because of extra activities they might be involved in. Then no sooner as all the students get home and get relaxed and everyth- ing, it is time to get up and come back to school. And of course the students pray for 3:10. 116 It's Friday and time to party, quotes Carmen Sida and Tammy Jones. MOMENTS .
