The yearbook staff of 1971, in order to defend its choice of changing the colors of this year- book, are dedicating this page to The Red and the Black with apologies to Stendhal. Not only have the colors been changed, but so have many other things. There are more pages and new ideas used in putting the yearbook together. This year the staff consists entirely of girls, which is another change over the past years. We sincerely hope that you en- joy this 1971 ECHO. The purpose of the Student Council, as stated in the preamble, is to act together as representatives of the students to provide op- portunity for student cooperation and participation and to pro- mote the general welfare of the school. This year the Student Council has been active in many ways. They attended a district workshop, and they have sponsored a Back-To-School Dance and sock hops. The council assisted in sponsoring the FHA Christmas Dance, and it participated in homecoming activities. On March 18-20, 1971, three members attended the State Con- vention. It included discussion groups and the election of new state officers. The main objective of the convention was to talk over the problems of councils in their schools and think of new ways to aid their schools. The first change was revisions in the constitution. Soon after that the Student Council took advantage of an empty room when the Kindergarten moved out. They turned it into a student lounge. This lounge was declared open to those students on the Honor Roll, National Honor Society, and Student Council mem- bers. Later this was revised to include all students with an S average. All in all, the council has made progress toward bettering the 38 school. First, instead of the usual blue and gold yearbook cover, the staff decided upon a bright red and black cover. Through selling more advertisements, the staff was able to increase the size of the yearbook by 32 pages. This year's Echo was a challenge because neither the instructor, Mrs. Kolbe, nor the all- girl staff had had any former experience in working with the yearbook. During Publica- tions Class each day they worked on page after page of layouts and copy to achieve the final effect of a meaningful Echo. They hope they have achieved that goal, and they are sure to always remember the 1971 Echo! ROW ONE: Marie Hollenbeck, Joy Rand, Carolyn Cox, Nancy Logan.
