Mr. Joseph Boeker, Sponsor Senior Class History It's the year 191+1 on the first day of school. The first grade class of Wright City is coming timidly with their parents to start their education. Among the members of the class is Rose Marie Ordelheide and Ronnie Harpster. Like all first grade classes, they were shy at first; but as they grew older the shy- ness disappears in some of the students and tarries with others. These little first grade children soon grow up to be in the second grade, and then the third grade. Their lives are a little confused as there were several teachers that year. Fortunately, they made it through the third grade and are ready to climb the ladder of learning. In the fourth grade they begin to study geography and history; and by the time the fifth and sixth grades are reached, they can read and do arithmetic very well. In the seventh and eighth grades they are preparing to begin a high school career. Finally the big day is reached. Freshmen at last 1 As they attend school on that day in 191+9 they are somewhat surprised at the change of things--going from class to class, seeing so many people, and making new friends. There are 19 in the class this year and soon they learn that their sponsor is Mr. House. The officers were elected as follows: President - Ivaree Schreckengast Secretary - Rose Marie Ordelheide Treasurer - Donna Smiley Student Council - Helena Geery and Donald Bote One of the highlights of the year is the Freshman initiation and party. Miss Rose Marie Ordelheide was the charming candidate for the FFA Aueen and Wayne Schroer was the King of Hearts candi- date. Donna Smiley was the candidate for the Carnival Queen. This year we see several couples walking hand-in-hand down lovers lane. Among them are Rose Marie and Floyd, and Ivaree S. and Ronald Leight. The Sophomore year started off very well. The officers for this year were: President - Shirley Groeper Vice-President - Shirley Ryker Secretary - Rose Marie Ordelheide Treasurer - Ann Sutton Student Council - Ivaree Schreckengast and Bob Kempfer The freshmen looked very funny in their initiation and we had a lot of fun at the party. Miss Paul, our sponsor, assisted us in planning our activities for the year. There were about 17 in the class this year. Shirley Groeper made a very charming FFA Queen candidate. At the Sadie Hawkin's Day dance, Bertha Singer and Bob Kempfer were cute as Daisy Mae and Li'l Abner. This year in Cupid's corner are some new couples added to it: Jeanne Cross and Bill Mikus, Shirley Groeper and Dale Van Horn, Bert Singer and Vernon Logan. Upper classmen at lastt This is a big year for all of us. We had to give a play and we had to plan and sponsor a prom. We had two sponsors this year. Miss Speer and Mr. Duffield. As officers, we chose: President - Ronnie Harpster Vice-President - Harvey Hughes Secretary - Marilyn Hughes Treasurer - Shirley Ryker Cheerleaders - Bert Singer and Shirley Ryker Ivare-3. schreckengast was our representative for Carnival Queen. Our Junior play, Life of Reilly helped pay for the prom. Ronnie and Marilyn had leading roles in the play with Harvey, Bert, Pat Nelson, Ivaree, Vera Hopper, Leonard Soebbing and the two Shirleys as supporting cast. We then set to work on the prom with Club 52 as our theme. The gym was decorated with gold and blue crepe paper and small tables surrounding the dance floor to give a nightclub effect. Music was furnished by the Cavaliers. Refreshments were served by members of the Sophomore Class. Twosomes in our lovers corner are Bert and Norton, Shirley Groeper and Bob Kempfer, and Marilyn Hughes and Dick Stapleton. And now we have reached that long awaited day. Seniors I There are only eight who have stayed with us all four years and only two. Rose and Ronnie who started together in the first grade. Rose is the only one who has spent all her school years here. There are 11+ in the Senior Class of 1953, whose able sponsor is Mr. Boeker. Our final choice for officers is: President - Harvey Hughes Vice-President - Shirley Groeper Secretary - Marilyn Hughes Treasurer - Shirley Ryker Student Council - Bert Singer and Wayne Schroer Janet Walker was our cheerleader and reporter. We were honored to have Shirley Groeper chosen PPA Queen. At one of the high- lights of the year, the PHA Valentine Party, our candidate for King of Hearts' was Harvey Hughes; and our candidate for year- book queen was Bert Singer. We are all looking forward to the prom which the Juniors have scheduled for May 2, and the Senior trip which promises to be a lot of fun for all of us. In Cupid's corner we see third-finger, left-hand evidences of lasting asso- ciations for some of our group, while others are developing new interests—to wit—Rose and Floyd, Bert and Norton, Janet and Larry, Mary Ellen and Ross, and Shirley G. and Charles S. We've told you our Past, Our Present you know, Our Future, who knows. As from W. C. H. S. we go. The Senior Class of 19 3 Junior Activities The Juniors started their 1952-03 school year by electing the following officers: Sally Smiley.........President. ..Phyllis Cook. . . Treasurer Norton Kennedy. . .V-President. .Ray Welge ..........Reporter Shirley Koelling. . .Secretary. .Phyllis Cook. . Cheerleader Marlene Lemke...........Student Council. . . . Donald Hoech The Juniors added three new students to their roster; Car- olyn Jaspering of Wright City, Margarite Scheitz from Homburg, Frankfurt, and Ray Welge from St. Charles; however, we lost Claude and Clifford Gosney at the end of the 3 rd quarter. We were very lucky to have Mrs. Ann Stamer as our sponsor. We started the year with a 'bang' by selling school caps, wildcat emblems, and pennants. These were a token of our school spirit. The Juniors held their bake sale Saturday, March lip, at Stamer's store. We are proud to say that it was a success. We had tryouts for the Junior Play which we gave Thursday, evening, November 13- The actors for the Junior Play, Looks Like Rain, were as follows: Don Hoech portrayed Monty Mansfield, the proprietor of the Sherwood Inn. Norton Kennedy was Monty's good friend, Reggie Van Wert, an ambitious author. Elmo Armstrong was Monty's cousin, the neat and refined lawyer who tried to cheat Monty out of a fortune. Ray Welge played Elmo's part. Junior Twiehaus portrayed the part of Jerry Watson, the late proprietor. Nellie Watson was Jerry's daughter who had her eyes on Monty. Nellie was portrayed by Marlene Lemke. Shirley Koelling was Mar- tha Watson, Jerry's better-half. Sally Smiley played the part of Vilut Hickey, Monty's neighbor who made your sides ache from laughter. We had a wonderful time preparing the play for present- ation. We are proud to say that we made a valuable contribution to the basketball teams. We had six boys and two girls on the teams. The girls were Sally Smiley and Mary Beth Govoreau. The boys were Clifford Gosney, JohnStippey, Junior Twiehaus, Donald Hoech, Nor- ton Kennedy, and Forrest Mikus. Our candidate for the F. F. A. Chapter Sweetheart was Sally Smiley and Donald Hoech was the nominee for the F. H. A. King of Hearts. The Junior-Senior prom, which was held on Saturday evening May 2, featured a Starlight and Moonglow theme. The gym was sectioned off to form a patio surrounded by a stone wall on which vines climbed and against which shrubs grew and blossomed. The false ceiling was of' deep blue, studded with twinkling stars, and with a full moon casting its beams to furnish light for the dan- cers. Throughout the garden, tables were placed among the shrub- bery. These were decorated with delicately cut crepe paper covers, over which stardust had been sprinkled, and each was lighted by a single taper in a star-shaped holder. Refreshments for the even- ing were Dew Drops (cookies) and Moonshine (punch). Invitations and favor booklets were in keeping with the theme of the evening. Music was furnished by an orchestra from the Woodland School of Music in St. Louis. On May 15 the Juniors ended a very successful school year at Wright City High School. Our officers this year have been Lester Sontag, president; Bonnie Barklage, v-president; Terry Shortal, secretary-treasurer; and Shirley Milan, reporter. George Jaeger and Betty Starrier were members of the student council. The freshman initiation was held September 23 when the poor, unworthy freshmen were rigged in fantastic garbs. Since that time we have gained two pupils and lost two. Six of our girls have won basketball letters; Betty Stamer, Lois Peix, Bonnie Barklage, Marilyn Hunt, Shirley Milan, and Francis Null. Miss Ermanell Joslin, our sponsor this year, has been most helpful in her suggestions. We have had two bake sales, both successful. As this has been such a prosperous year for us, we of the Sophomore Class, hope that the freshmen of this year are as successful and happy when they become sophomores. Maids ot Honor Band The Wright City High School Band under the direction of Mr. James Fortune has had a very successful year. The band gave one concert in the fall and another in the spring. The fall concert featured a trumpet trio by Lester Sontag, Paul Godt, and Terry Shortal; and a tuba solo by Harvey Hughes. The spring concert proved to be an evening of fine entertain- ment. The band played several snappy marches and solos were play- ed by Lester Sontag, Donnie Hoech, and Lois Feix. The band participated in the Wentzville Music Festival and entered the music contest at Kirksville where they received a II rating. During this year the band has been enlarged considerably and it is looking forward to even better years in the future. Junior Band At the beginning of this school year in early September, 32 little grade school boys and girls marched happily into the music room all set to start playing their musical instruments. Success doesn't always mean winning, because we didn't always win. We learned how to grin and bear It when we lost and to keep right in there fighting. Most of all, we enjoyed it. We had a rip-roarin' good old time. The reason we had such a wonderful season is because of our coach, Jumping Joe Boeker. He put a lot of time, patience, and work into making this season so wonderful for us. We truly appre elate all he has done.
