I Table of Contents 2 irouqfi ,50 4 T 6 kites. Dedication You kin boast about yer cities, and their stiddy growth and size. And brag about yer County-seats, and business enterprise. And railroads, and factories, and all sich foolery — But the little Town O’ Taleholt (Saltville) is big enough fer me.” JWR There would be no need for a yearbook had not each and every member of our com¬ munity supported R.B. Worthy High School. Without their concern, our school would not be in existence today. The 1969-70 edition of the Choo Choo” is dedicated to you, the Little Town O’ Salt¬ ville,” as we attempt to voice our appreciation. 4 5 Administration Mr. Robert G. McCoy The epithet “Really Be Worthy,” for which the initials R.B.W. could possibly stand, is one of Mr. McCoy’s favorite lines. His definition of “worthy” is being of good moral character, being deserving, and being thankful. As an educator he ' tries to express the importance of having pride in one’s school. Mr. McCoy is young enough to understand what high school students need, and mature enough to responsibly direct each student’s education. Upper right: R. G. McCoy, R. B. Worthy principal. Concern and understanding where only guidance is expected. Middle right: Reprooi on his lips, but a smile in his eyes. Lower right: Mrs. Elaine Mullins, R. B. Worthy secretary. Above and beyond the call of duty. 6 SC A This year R. B. Worthy students joined young people everywhere in a cry for responsibility. The Student Cooperative Association an¬ swered this cry by directing emphasis away from the punitive and toward the construc¬ tive. With the able leadership of the offi¬ cers and the cooperation of the represent¬ atives, a more responsible, more adult re¬ lationship was developed between the stu¬ dents and the faculty. This foremost project of the S. C. A. was controlling and grading all club projects. Other projects included the sponsoring of the Homecoming dance, holding assemblies, and the presentation of the Outstanding Club Award. Upper right: OFFICERS - Debbie Smith, Treasurer; Jerry Roberts, President; David Barrett, Vice-President; Charles Mitchell, Reporter. New layouts, new copy, and new type were employed, the result being the most original, imaginative yearbook ever. Work on the Choo Choo began last spring with the organization of a staff that was ready to work. Advertisements were sold during the summer months to business men and women in Saltville and surrounding areas. Under the di¬ rection of a capable editor, each member met his deadline, whether he was working on copy, photography, or sales. Upper left: OFFICERS - lohnny Norris, Janet Wertz, Earnest Greer, Charles Slate, Jane Wil¬ lis, Jane Little, Kay Delp, and Pearline Hayden. Upper right: MEMBERS - Eddie Arnold, Jennifer Snow, Joy Cahill, Jackie Roberts, Rusty Cahill, Mark Asbury, Clay Marshall, and Lynn Cahill. Lower left: SPONSOR, Mr. Farris and EDITOR, Rosemary Collins. 15 Saltshaker Staff This year the Saltshaker Staff salted the news and shook up the un-news to produce R. B. Worthy ' s most successful newspaper ever. With an unparalleled in sight into the activities, achievements, interests, and oddities of Worthy’s stu¬ dent body, the staff illustrated student life through the eyes of an understanding Dear Gabby and an imaginative gossip rack. Perhaps the greatest accomplish¬ ment was the ability of the reporters to be where it was and then accurately record what it was. Putting out a successful paper is hard work, and this year’s Saltshaker Staff deserves credit for their extra effort. The Beta Club is a non-profit organization for juniors and seniors who have maintained an A average throughout high school. Besides meeting these academic requirements, members must also exercise worthy character and attitude. Membership in the club is open to all girls who have taken or who are tak¬ ing home economics and who are interest ed in developing their domestic skills. Club members served as waitresses at several banquets in the community, and built a float for Saltville ' s Christmas parade. As a special school project, the Future Homemakers took turns working in the clinic. Individual members worked to earn various homemaking degrees by carrying out projects which encourage democracy in home and community life, promote inter¬ national goodwill, or further interest in home economics. Such things as a fiesta with Rich Valley where Spanish songs were sung and Spanish food was eaten helped to foster an understanding between Spanish speaking countries and America. Other projects included supporting Bertha Beana Estcado (the club’s adopted Mexican child), sponsoring a school dance, and Christmas caroling in Spanish. Spanish Club Members. In it ' s second year as Worthy ' s youngest club, the Art and Photography Club proved that youth can work too. With it ' s purpose in mind (to beautify the school and community) the club painted scenery for class plays, placed basketball announcements downtown, composed a basketball mural on the gym wall, made original ad¬ mission signs for wrestling matches, and repainted num¬ bers on the auditorium seats. Special projects included painting a doll house for the orphanage and designing a Christmas display for the front entrance. 71 Worthy ' s Hi-Y sponsored by the Y. M. C. A. , tries to increase Christian standards and growth in the home, school, and community. It ' s slogan, to create, maintain, and extend the standards of Chris- tain character is also it ' s purpose. The club is open to all boys who wish to follow this idea. During the past years, the Hi-Y has worked with the Tri-Hi-Y in attaining many of it ' s goals. Joint projects this year include selling zip code books and organizing an induction service for the Y clubs. Other projects, such as promoting a school clean-up campaign, sponsoring school dances, and announcing players at basketball games, helped to make this a very successful year. OFFICERS: J. Collecting for the Heart Fund, co-sponsoring an induction ceremony, and co-sponsoring Christian Emphasis Week were just a few of the club ' s many service projects. School projects included operating the bookstore, cleaning the trophy cases, building a float, obtaining ministers for the invocation at foot¬ ball games, maintaining a bulletin board, selling zip code books for the inter-club treasury, and co¬ sponsoring the Christmas dance. Club members were proud to represent R. B. Worthy at the Hi-Y Model General Assembly and District Conference, for they represented one of Worthy’s most outstanding and effective service clubs. Members worked with the other Y clubs at Worthy, promoting such projects as Operation Zip Code, the Heart Fund Drive, and co-sponsoring Christian Emphasis Week. Worthy ' s students remembered the Junior Tri-Hi-Y every time they drank from a water fountain this year (club members were respon¬ sible for the cleanliness of the fountains). And the faculty silently blessed the club every time they entered their uncluttered, well-swept teacher ' s lounge, compliments of the Junior Tri-Hi-Y. 74 ■Willi 1 — Latin Club It has been said that Latin is a dead language, but un¬ deniably live Latin Club mem¬ bers spent this year trying to kill such superstitions. By presenting skits to the student body (such as the famous Shaker VS Steer skit) and by providing ' ' V pep buses to out-of-town games, pep club members successfully accomplished their job. Club The Distributive Education Club promotes education in business. The students learned to be better citizens in their community by work¬ ing in different stores downtown. The members of the D.E. Club really make the community and the school proud of them in the 1969- ' 70 school year. OFFICERS: Steve Dow, Marty Sills, Phyllis Johnson, Patty Stillwell, Mr. Cochran, and Charles Borders. 77 Science Club Through the pursuit of the sciences, members of the Science club gain a deeper appreciation of the intracacies of life. Knowledge in science progresses at a furious pace, leaving textbooks far behind. By pursuing scientific knowledge under the guise of lectures and discussions, science club members tried to keep ahead in the race for knowledge. The emphasis this year was on astron¬ omy. Members learned to work with telescopes, locate the constellations, and map interplanetary orbits. Each individual club member entered projects of his or her choice in local science fairs. Membership is by invi¬ tation: members must have at least an 85 average and show outstanding leadership ability. With a motto We Build, the club served the com¬ munity by painting trash cans and distributing Community Chest Fund posters. Various school projects included conducting a school-wide mock election (William C. Battle won the election ); co-sponsoring the Christmas Dance, in spite of friendly advice from the Tri-Hi-Y; and attending to the raising and lowering of the flag. By serving as secretaries to teachers members were given first-hand knowledge of what it means to be a good secretary. This year emphasis was placed on typing: typing for the Bloodmobile, absentee lists, and play programs occupied much of the club ' s project time. Other pro¬ jects included the upkeep of four bulletin boards, a school assembly, and participating in the Radford Re¬ gional Convention. The F. B. L. A. should be compli¬ mented for the business-like manner in which they carried out these and other projects, certainly worthy of future business leaders. OFFICERS: C. Goodman, Chap; R. Junior Library Club Members The Junior Library Club is open to all seventh and eighth graders who wish to leam the ’hows of library work. While assisting the Senior Library Club with its projects, members placed more emphasis on studying, watching filmstrips, and hearing lectures in order to understand the confusing Dewey Decimal System or to master the act of cataloguing books. The junior club was responsible for the bulletin boards in the library, calling to the attention of the stu¬ dent body the value of books and reading. During National Library Week the club pro¬ moted reading by distributing bookmarks and placing eye-catching posters throughout the school. Not only did members work and study together, but they also took time out to play at a successful Christmas party. Sr. Library Club The ninth through twelfth graders, who comprise the Senior Library Clul spent less time on learning the library (which they did in the Junior Library Club) and more time working in the library. By utilizing their study hall time, members were able to assist the school librarian by shelving books, helping fellow students find books, stamping books, and cataloguing books. With the beautification of the library in mind, the Senior Library Club brought the Christmas spirit to R.B. Worthy when they decorated the library with all the Yule- tide trimmings. As a special project, Library Club members served as library assis¬ tants to teachers and were responsible for providing the teacher with audio-visual material and reference books. The 1969-70 year came to an end with a bang-up Senior Library Club picnic at the close of the school year. From Coach Lewis they learned how to call plays, how to handle the football, the techniques of the various playing positions, and the many stingent rules and regulations. By competing with other 8th grade teams in the area, team members gained actual experi¬ ence - not only in how to play football, but also in how to play with spirit and good sports¬ manlike conduct. Tim Denton and David Arnold, the top defensive players, not only effec¬ tively guarded the Shaker offensive, but frustrated many scoring efforts of opposing teams. Girl ' s Basketball Coached by Mrs. Paige Arnold, the Varsity Shaker- ettes put forth a lot of effort to make this year a suc¬ cessful one. Although success was not indicated by the team ' s scores, the girls compensated by display¬ ing excellent sportsmanship. The two seniors of the team, Cathy Connett and Grayson Ward, worked effectively as a team within the team the first few games. However, Grayson received injuries in a car wreck and was unable to complete the season. The team regrets losing two such fine players in May, but 1970 is another year and 1969 ' s juniors will be the seniors! T. Henderson, Y. Walker, J. Henegar, J. Brannon, M. Arnold, B. Sykes, G.
