Table of Contents '2 OUR DREAMS REALIZED Foreword Transition: Webster describes it as the passage from one place or state to another. However, it has a much deeper and meaningful definition to the students at R.B. Worthy High School. It means that they have left behind many unforgettable moments and fond memo- ries of the old high school and have moved to a newer and better place of leaming. 'I'his edition of the CHOO CHOO strives to tell the vivid story of how, with the help of countless guiding hands, the students turned a strange and meaningless structure into the birth- place of many experiences and memories which will live in their hearts forever. 3 THOSE TO WHO WE ARE MEMBERS of SCHOOL BOARD: Ray B. Worthy, Clerk, Dr. Thomas K. McKee, Chairman, and Hedley L. Craft. Jasper Q. Peeples MAYOR Anthony R. Schmerda, ARCHITECT, Vint T. Rector, SUPERINTI-LNIDENT of CONSTRUCTION. GRATEFUL We wish to express our gratitude to those whose ingenuity, re- soursefulness, and drive are largely responsible for obtaining what the citizens and students of Saltville have dreamed of and needed for years--a new school. Through their careful planning, hard work, and organized effort construction was finally begun. Near the beginning of the 1957-58 school year, their goal was attained as a modern, spacious school was completed. The people of Saltville are justifiably proud of their new place of learning, and proud also of the citizens who made it possible. TOWN COUNCIL: N. O. Williams, W. J. Totten, J. W. Sauls, C. D. Shannon, NL L. Bunts, R. L. Warren, R. D. Campbell, and A. N. Hawley. Lynn F. Moore DEDICATIO To show our appreciation for his willingness to help us ir1 any worthwhile thing we strive to dog for all the extra work he has done in helping to make the dream of a new school a reality, and for his determination and desire to do anything in his power to make our school a better place and the students in it better citizens, the Senior Class of 1958, being the first to graduate from R. B. Worthy High School, proudly dedicates this edition of the CHOO CHOO to the esteemed principal of our new school, Mr. LYNN F. MOORE. ,gina fyffsl- v' if . We are glad because of the wonderful experiences we have enjoyed and all the new friends we have made. We are sad because we realize that the happiest and most enjoyable period of our lives must end. 'I'he fond memories of these years will live in our hearts forever. A few events stand out from all the rest as we reminisce about our past high school days. In our Freshman year in 1954-55, Mr. Shipley, Mr. Neblett, and Miss Sampson were our patient sponsors. Since this was really our first year in high school, we were beginning to feel important and more as if we belonged in various school activities. One of our classmates, Nancy Campbell, was chosen Miss Saltville, and Sena McCready was elected class president. The class showed progress during its Sophomore year .under the able sponsorship of Mrs. Sheffield and Mrs. Bennett. Sena McCready again served the class as president. When our Junior year came around, we were really starting to roll. A hilarious stunt, Roll Out the Barrel, easily took first prize in Stunt Nite, and the class presented the best Junior Play ever, entitled Professor, How Could You! Our float also took third prize in the annual Homecoming parade, and Shirley Hogston won the high school popularity contest. Ronnie Coulthard was president of the class, and Carol Ivey won the first Miss Jaycee beauty contest. A lovely prom with the theme Moments to Remember, was given the graduating class of '57. The tremendous success enjoyed by the class that year was due largely to the splendid leadership of the Junior class sponsors, Mrs. Clear and Mrs. Ballah. Now is 1957-58 we are living the most memorable school year of our lives. At last we are Seniors and the fact that we are to be the FIRST graduating class of our new Worthy High School adds to the excite- ment. One of the thrills of the year was the arrival of our class rings. Our capable sponsors, Miss Wor- sham and Mrs. Parks, have been busy lining up money-making projects, and the class has a good start toward their Washington trip. Bobby Crabtree was elected class president, and John Booth was chosen to serve as Lieutenant Governor of his divi- sion of the Key Club. Our stunt, a take-off on The Lawrence Welk Show, won Hrst prize, and Mack Campbell and Nancy Campbell reigned as King and Queen of the Homecoming Court. Joye Frye was chosen Miss Jaycee, and Jeanie Sanders was Queen of the Tabacco Festival. When our Shakers captured the Group I Southwest District champion- ship in football, many Senior players received honors. These have been just a few of our more impor- tant experiences, but we are sure that each Senior has his own private memories that cannot be des- cribed. The Senior class of '58 hopes that this an- nual will serve as a lasting memorial to the best years of our lives. NOE1. Since then it has brought about many imporvements in both the school and its students by creating more interest in school activities and more pride in the accomplish- ments of the students. Interest in club work has been greatly increased by an Outstanding Club Award given at the end of each scholo year by the SCA to the club found most deserving in very strict evaluation by the Council. Other projects include Religious Emphasis Week, fixing Christmas baskets, and aiding Mr. Moore in establishing the Self- Improvement program. The main responsibility of the SCA is to regulate all club activities. Inf 9 Ill Q7IHQII'I A Hilo? PRINCIPAL SPEAK5 AT OPENING F NEW SCHGOI. Staff Class Reporters Anne Davidson. The celebra- tion was in evidence a week beforehand as all the clubs and classes were bustling around trying to put together a winning float and the football team was practicing extra hard to win the one game of the season that must be won. Saturday finally rolled around and the students were excitedly putting the finishing touches to their floats for the big parade. The streets of Saltville were lined with spectators as the Shaker band proudly led the march through town. The Eighth Grade float with the theme, Let 's Bear With the Shakers was chosen the winner, and the Queen 's Float built by the SCA took second place. The Juniors' float, We Have the G-Men Undercover, won third prize. Nancy Campbell steps up to be crowned by J. Leonard Mauck, Superintendant of Schools. The Shakers, much to the delight of the old grads, came through in fine fashion by downing the tough G-Men 25-13. With the big game won, everybody was in fine spirits for the Homecoming Dance. One of the highlights of the Festival was the crowning of the King and Queen, Mack Campbell and Nancy Camp- bell. When the dance was over everyone went home happy with a big day of celebration behind them. Homecoming of '57 will always be recalled as one of the most significant events of the year.
