yr , 1 . in --w Captain Bernie Brunner led the locol squad. Practice for the l944 season started two weeks before school It was held in the evening so boys who worked all day could participate. Practice started at 7100 and lasted until it be- came too dark to see the football. The boys pro- gressed favorably and attendance was good despite enormous numbers of mosquitoes and other nocturnal insects. Not infrequently were the times when a gasping and panting player would suddenly choke and turn pale as he in- haled several of the winged pests. The first few days the practice dealt mostf ly with calisthenics and the fundamentals of football. Later teams were organized and the players tried out for different Dositions on the team. Although various changes were made during the course of the season the accepted positions of the first seventeen players were as follows. Brunner, Quarterback, Bisch, guard, J. Anderson, guard, Crippen, tackle, Dubo, guard, Engelkes, holfback, Fouskee, tackle, Hendrick- son, fullback,, Kingrey, tackle, Rohwedder, end, Schlichte, quarterback, Siewert, centerg Stoakes, quarterback, Rockwood, halfback, Thompson, tackle, Voss, guard, Woefle, end. As soon as this was accomplished the players were given the first of the many plays which they were to use during the season.
