Practice for the l944 season started two weeks before school It was held in the evening so boys who worked all day could participate. Practice started at 7100 and lasted until it be- came too dark to see the football. The boys pro- gressed favorably and attendance was good despite enormous numbers of mosquitoes and other nocturnal insects. Not infrequently were the times when a gasping and panting player would suddenly choke and turn pale as he in- haled several of the winged pests. The first few days the practice dealt mostf ly with calisthenics and the fundamentals of football. Later teams were organized and the players tried out for different Dositions on the team. Although various changes were made during the course of the season the accepted positions of the first seventeen players were as follows. Brunner, Quarterback, Bisch, guard, J. Anderson, guard, Crippen, tackle, Dubo, guard, Engelkes, holfback, Fouskee, tackle, Hendrick- son, fullback,, Kingrey, tackle, Rohwedder, end, Schlichte, quarterback, Siewert, centerg Stoakes, quarterback, Rockwood, halfback, Thompson, tackle, Voss, guard, Woefle, end. As soon as this was accomplished the players were given the first of the many plays which they were to use during the season. Used almost entirely by the Troians was the Notre Dame box formation Supolementing this were a few T formation plays which the team adopted in the later part of the season. l. .lurn Anderson 2 Everet Bisch, 3 Dud- ley Crfoben 4 Richard Duba. 5 Lloyd Engel- kes 6 John Fauskee. 7. James Hendrickson. E Dean Kfgrey. GRID SQUAD The i944 Troian team was hanftiranoed by a light and inexperienced souad Only five let- termen started out the yearg Bernard Brunner, Dudley Crippen, Richard Duba, Dean Kingrey, Edgar Siewert Injuries early in the season to Brunner lcaptainl and several other first elev- en players held the squad at a disadvantage throughout the season The result was that the Troians were defeated by each opposing team The season started out with the locals invading Pipestone to be defeated by the Ar- rows I4 to 6 in one of the closest fought games of the season The following week a game with Washington High of Sioux Falls for the sake of experience proved costly in injuries suffered by the Troians, The next game at Luverne found Worthington on the losing end of the 20-6 score. Worthington's sole touchdown was scored by Brunner One week later an over' ggtimistic Troian team was upset by Lakefield, -6. The next game was the homecoming with Windom, Warthingtan's first home game. Again the determined Traians grudgingly gave ground before a superior blue and yellow line, Prospects for a victory soared in the remaining minutes af the game when the Troians unleased a furious air attack until the blue and yellow again slipped through the Troion line to score, The game ended with Worthington trailing in the 29-l7 score In the second home game of the year Jack- SOrt gave Worthington a Serious trouncing in O game which ended with the score 55-O, Two boys who worked hard throughout the season and received little credit and no glory were student manager LaVerne Hartman and assistant manager Clarence Riss These boys per- formed well their duties of handing out towels, checking out equipment, assisting in the taping of ankles and wrists and numerous other jobs. l, Roxy Rockwood 2, Willis Rohwedder 3. The next week the Troyans staged a comeback by defeating both Hills ond Adrian in a double header. Then again the Trolans came out on the trailing end of the score This time in a game with Lakefield. Numerous unscheduled games with smaller near by towns were played throughout the season with the Tropans emerging victorious In almost every encounter School spirit was good throughout the season and was fired from time to time by frequent games which were nip and tuck throughout all four quarters Among these games was the Tro1an's second defeat of Luverne, Worthing- ton's chief rival, in a game in which the Luverne gymnasium was packed to the aisles with Trolan rooters Something new to Worthington basketball were the frequent Tuesday night games in addition to the regular Friday night games. The success of the season is due not only to the hard work and practice af the players but also to the coach, Milton .Osterberg, who has made great progress in overcoming the iinx which has been hovering over the team for the past several seasons Coach Osterberg, who was handicapped by the small number of returning veterans and his lack of knowledge concerning the abilities of the various players, was at a disadvantage which could only be overcome by constant practice, Donald Woelfle James Hendrickson Lowell Baker Earl Schuster 'ln Roger Dieter s JQCk WQHO Ce Anhu r gwon SOn Wlms Rohwe dder Eod Schusker odds one pdxm Ko Khe 'Yrokm gcore wYixXe LokeKXeXd ond XocoX cogers watch KK swksh We net.
