With a total of twenty-five semi-finalists, Wor- thington has the most in Ohio. Each year juniors take the PSAT test to find out how they may score in the SAT. If a student scores higher than the mini- mum required score for the state of Ohio, he or she gains the option to compete with other semi-finalists for college scholarships Colleges and uni- versities are supplied with names of these semi-finalists and may wish to contact these students because of their high scores Roughly ninety per- cent of all semi-finalists advance to fi- nalist competition and less than forty percent of these finalists become Merit Scholars. In many cases, students are able to receive a four-year scholar- ship, providing opportunities that may not otherwise have been possible. WHS 1987 National Merit Semi-finalists are: William Allison. . . One of the most popular courses at W.H.S. Political radicalism is a unique course at Worthington High School. Since its begin- ning. its popularity has increased to be- come one of the most popular classes offered The course, which once had a set limit to the number of students en- rolled. is now open to all those who want to take it. Over four hundred students are presently taking the class which has in- creased the teaching staff of the course from one teacher to three — Mr. Molnar (who originally taught it), Mr. Lane, and Ms. Charlton. Mr. Molnar began teaching political radicalism in 1975. As its name indicates, political radical- ism deals not with regular politics, but with radical politics and nonconformists. Stu- dents learn about the political groups of yesterday and today. Originally there was no textbook for the course, but around eight years ago, Mr. Molnar and his students collaborated on putting to- gether their own book, including all the ideas and themes they wanted to learn about. Another unique quqlity about the course is the manner in which it is present- ed. During the first quarter students learn the theories and ideas of political radical- ism. During the second quarter, various speakers from different organizations come to the classrooms to provide inter- esting insights into their views and the views of others. The students enjoy listen- ing to the beliefs of the different groups and having the opportunity to ask them questions about their organizations. There are speakers such as Lea Thomp- son from the Revolutionary Communist Youth Brigade and Myra Severance of the Eagle Forum. Said Ms. Charlton. It's really fun and interesting. It's an unusual course.
