This year we have Altonso Ujueta from Columbia, Sigrun Tangemann from Austria, Yuri Chikuma from Japan, Chris- tian Crwalinna from Germany, Ana Gomes-Tabanera, Pepe Marti and Al- berto Montaner from Spain. Surhanth Krishna from India, and Hilde Juressen from Belgium Even though they come here from dif- ferent organizations, all have these same goals: to learn and to understand the American way of life, the culture and the language. Christian says, The American way of life is not easy to accepti That and the foreign language give me some hard times, but when I go back to my country. I will be happy that I had the opportunity to live here. And I am bring- ing home an American piece of mind. Maybe I will never be able to understand everything the U S. has to offer, but I am trying hard and I am getting closer. These students are in our school a whole year. WHS takes care of these stu- dents in several ways. There are special classes offered, such as American history and English for those students who do not understand English well yet. All exchange students are part of International Club, where they tell about their country and become friends with other students who are also interested in different cultures. The foreign students like WHS because of its many facilities, courses, sports, and clubs in which they can participate Being an exchange student is lots of fun. Sometimes it is hard, but there are always friendly teachers and students who are ready to help. This year at WHS is something they will never forget. By Hilde Juressen Opeong,

W.H.S. has the spirit of competition The schools rally around their teams in one great burst of school spirit. We Want Some Bear Meat! is a famil- phrase at WHS But this rivalry was not vays as fierce or as mutual as it is to- ty Twenty-five years ago, all the fights are between WHS and Westerville This airy was so intense that competition itween the two schools had to be mcelled. However, for years individual WHS ams had their own personal rivalry with y such as the rivalry between the swim ams, Mr Apthorp says, The swimming airy was a different sort of rivalry, not violent as it is today, but rather, friend- ly and full of respect. During the late seventies, UA was a state athletic powerhouse and the team to beat. Although Westerville was still WHS's major rival, the WHS football team had lost 20 straight games to UA. UA brushed off WHS as if it were a pesky fly. The rivalry did not intensify to its present level until the 1977 season. That year, with Bob Atha as quarterback. WHS pulled a 14-8 up- set over UA in the final minutes of the game. Worthington went wild! This had snapped a twenty year old winning streak. Although rivalry can sometimes get out of hand, it is the essence of competition. Two teams train hard for the big game. And when the game finally arrives the schools rally around their teams in one great burst of school spirit. As long as WHS and UA maintain their quality athletic teams, and the negative aspects of rival- ry are kept in check, the rivalry will con- tinue to be the focus of school spirit into the next decade.
