The administration and faculty, headed by Principal John W. Hoeffler, apply their wis- dom and technique in order that the students may benefit from their years of teaching. Opening 7 The students can choose their re- quired and elective courses from the broad curriculum provided by the administration. It not only pro- vides for the college bound stu- dent, but also helps the student who wants to learn a skill or trade and begin working immediately after graduation. Opening 11 Many students participate in one or more clubs or sports. There is a wide variety of clubs ranging from those that support the athletes to those that study foreign lan- guages. Some students earn awards and are elected to be offi- cers. The tradition of quality at Worthington High School will con- tinue in its students and faculty. Opening 15 V Cards go out on the Town ... The theme was evident as the student body lived it up homecoming weekend. It all started Thursday night at the bonfire with the pep rally and announcement of the queen and her court. The reigning queen was Kellie Frederick. Her court consisted of Junior Sandy Jarret. Sophomore Amy Handley, and Freshman Friday night our football team defeated Groveport to contin- ue their winning streak. The walking parade was a success from the A.P.’s big red lobster to the winning cardinal knight presented by the Juniors. Sat- urday the stage was set with the annual homecoming dance that evening. Alumni Mark Sutherland of WNCI was the D.J. for the evening. The hard work paid off and home- coming 1983 provided to be a fun-filled weekend for all in- volved. “It Was A Night On The Town” Opposite Top: Kellie Freder- ick is crowned queen with the rest of the court looking on Opposite Left: Kathy McCabe and her date dreamily dance the night away Opposite Right: Paul Harton and Jody Gahman take time out for the photographer Top Left: The senior float makes its way around the track. Homecoming 19 On November 7, 1983, the Ju- nior and Senior girls met on the football field to play the sixth annual gridiron clash known as the Powder Puff game. Junior captains Steph- anie Schupp and Vanessa Hastings and Senior captains Deanna Sunday and Megan Demko organized their teams. With the aid of football players as coaches, they practiced for the event, which was probably the roughest Powder Puff game in W.H.S. history. The day of the game created a great deal of excitement and vengeance between the two classes. The Seniors har- assed Junior players and coaches as they arrived at school, while the Juniors tore down a few Senior banners. This hostility was soon taken out on the field. Both teams inflicted numerous bruises on each other, as well as a few more serious injuries. When the game was finally over, the scoreboard showed an un- precedented fact: The Juniors had surprised the Seniors and pulled off a tie, with each side having fourteen points. Jill Hitt scored all the Senior points; Venessa Hastings and Denny Duff accumulated the Junior points. Traditionally, the proceeds from the gate are donated to a charity chosen by the players, and so the American Cancer Society received $918.91, the most ever raised by a Powder Puff game. Girls Battle It Out Powder Putt 21 Once again the thespian fall play was a resounding suc- cess. This year’s production of “You Can’t Take It With You” was full of good times for ev- eryone. The story was about a crazy family who had many funny and heartwarming exper- iences. Snakes, kittens, and fireworks were all part of the fun. The family spokeswoman was Penny Sycamore (Judy Black- more), with her husband Paul (Kelly Lowe), and Grandpa (Eric Fricas). The cast also in- cluded: Lisa Davidson, Ro- shun Drinkard, Chris Cooper, John Ward, Shaun Lockett, Sharon Myers, Brent Ries, Bill Curry, Troy McDonald, Susan Booth, David Hansen, Susan Mathews, Keith Ouzts. Allen Christopher. Doug Savage, and Jennifer Clement. This eccentric play not only displayed the talent of the ac- tors. but the knowledge and skill of the technical crews and directors. Much thanks should go to Mrs. Hopton, Mr. Scow- den. Mr. Haney, Miss Hotten- roth, Marianne Hyland, and Soni Weagle. Their time and effort made this production a success. Everyone participates in one committee or another. From then on it is, “You’re on your own kid!” Miss Nault provides some as- sistance but for the most part. all the work comes from the students themselves. First, students nominated each other for positions in the 1983-1984 Mock Trials. After the election committee spent a busy night organizing the nominations into some sem- blance of order, the students elected those whom they thought would do the best job. Next Miss Nault handed out the sealed cases, not to be shown to or discussed with anyone outside their period or with legal council, under pen- alty of removal from participa- tion in the Mock Trials. The at- torneys, judges, and witnesses then had one week in which to prepare their arguments and decide the crucial issues of the case. During that week, no law student was allowed to cut, miss, or be late for any reason to any class. This also was un- der penalty of removal from the Trials. The students of Miss Nault’s classes deserve congratula- tions for the monumental amount of work they had to accomplish. An additional congratulations are due to Miss Nault, for her excellent teaching amply prepared her students to succeed in this en- deavor. 24 Fall Mock Trials Justice Reigns At WHS Opposite Top Left: The coun- cil meets with Judge Jeff Kramer. What they came up with was the Winter Carnival. This event would be filled with games and prizes for the youngsters of Worthington. Again this year the Winter Car- nival. which was held February 4. was a success. Many of the WHS clubs and organizations participated. Such events as the M.G.A.’s obstacle course, the yearbook’s ping pong toss for gold fish, and the junior class’ pie throw were big mon- ey makers. It was fun and ex- citement for the children as well as the clubs and organiza- tions present. This program, open to upper level French students, pro- vides a three and one half week stay in France, during which the Americans learn to live in a country different than their own. Leaving in early February and accompanied this year by French teacher Miss Armitage. the Americans arrived in Paris. Four days of sight seeing in and around Paris was the de- but. Afterwards, the Ameri- cans boarded the train for a two and one half hour ride to Caen whereupon they met their French families. During the next three weeks the Americans learn to live like French, attend a French high school, and see many interest- ing sights including the WWII D-Day beaches and the American Military Cemetary in nearby St. Laurent. In April, the French students arrive in New York City for sev- eral days and then continue to Worthington to live like Ameri- cans. Many activities in and out of the high school are held for the French. The Worthington co-ordinator Mr. Ballinger and his counter- part in Caen, Madame Laurent both believe that this program has helped to create a vital bridge between the two coun- tries and at the same time last- ing friendships and memories have been established. WHS stu- dents traded in their suits and ties and dresses and heels, for shorts, sunglasses, Hawaiian shirts, and wild hats. The gym was transformed into a wild beach as the partiers rocked on. The Winter King and Queen were Scott David and Tracy Ritter. The King’s Court consisted of Chip Brooks, Scott Collins Mike DeMuth, and Lars Schmidt. The Queen’s Court was Sally Blackford, Bethany Jones, Sherry Schlater, Laura Scott, and Mona Sullivan. 28 Winter Dance February is often thought of as a girl’s dream come true at least here at WHS! Because the Valentine’s Dance is Sadie Hawkins, the girls get their chance to ask that special guy. Judging by the huge tur- nout, many of the girls did just that. Couples arrived ready to dance to the music of Mag- num, the band. This year’s King of Hearts was Sean Allen. The high school gym was decorated with red hearts, each bearing the name of a couple at the dance. Cupid Visits The Cards Valentine's Dance 29 This year’s production of “Guys and Dolls” was a re- sounding success. The talent displayed by the actors and actresses was truly profes- sional. The large cast was lead by Judy Blackmore who played Miss Adelaide. John Ward (Nathan Detroit). Rich Greene (Sky Masterson). and Diane Boring (Sarah Brown). The story revolved around Miss Adelaide and Nathan De- troit trying to pick a wedding date after being engaged for 14 years. The other plot was a bet that took place with Sky Masterson. The bet stated that he couldn’t find a “doll” to take to Havanna. Cuba. He found one and that “doll” just happened to be Sarah Brown. The other major parts were played by Phil Haney (Nicely- Nicely Johnson) and Keenan Blanke (Benny Southstreet). The rest of the cast was made up of the Mission Band. Hot Box Dancers, and the acting chorus. A big special thanks should go to Joel Haney. Elaine Hotten- roth, Bronwynn Hopton. James Scowden. John Fryer. Linda Hopper. Jennifer Clem- ent. Sharon Myers. Beth Haney who spent many weeks working with the operetta. 30 Operetta “Guys And Dolls” Entertains WHS Opposite Top Left: Dianne Bor ing gets a good shot at Rich Greene during the performance. The in- duction ceremony was held May 21, 1984. Teachers voted for these students on the basis of leadership, scholarship, ser- vice, and character. This year 56 juniors and 33 seniors joined the 54 previously se- lected members. National Honor Society strives to recognize deserving stu- dents. Unfortunately in WHS it is difficult to choose among so many outstanding people. NHS, on the whole, encour- ages the development of char- acter in students of Worthing- ton High School. 32 N.H.S. Mr. Fuller and Mr. Riegel put to- gether an incredible mix of acts, from the rock band Blind Ambition, to the clas- sical guitar of Eric Brunskill. In addition were the Alumni Breakers and the infamous Sam Camode and the Four Flushers. The example set by this year’s talent will be hard to match in future years. Above Left: Blind Ambition gives the show a little rock. Above Right: Michelle Lever- enz adds her contribution to the Variety Show. To quali- fy for academic honors, one must have maintained at least a 3.5 grade point average each semester. Seniors are awarded the gold key; juniors, the silver key; sophomores, the bronze key. This year the banquet was held on April 11, 1984, in the East Ball- room of the Ohio Union. A total of 108 seniors, 75 ju- niors, and 97 sophomores earned keys. It was about a fable fac- tory that went out of business because they did not have a moral maker. A young girl, Mary (Jill Earhart, Karen Outz), came strolling in one day to the factory and was hired as the moral maker. She and Mr. Aesop (Bob O’Dair, Jack Plotnick) made morals for the ant and the grasshop- per, the farmer and the don- key, and many others. At the end Mary had to decide if she wanted to stay with the fac- tory or go back home. She de- cided to go home. This double cast, which con- sisted of 30 members each, performed this play at each elementary school. The stu- dent directors were Susan Booth and Michelle Devine. The piano players were Jill An- derson and Paul Peuffer. 36 Children's Play The “Fabulous Fable Factory” Delighted Children Opposite Top Left: Mary gets excited over the play Opposite Top Right: I'm Frieda, the feeler finder. As ad- visor Sunny Spung and Co- chairmen Jan Lewis and Stephanie Schupp can attest, the prom takes much planning and support, but the work doesn’t get done by itself. Forming ideas and attending meetings take much time, ef- fort, and enthusiasm. It is obvi- ous that those working on prom committees were highly dedicated because this year’s prom was one of the best in recent years. The Junior-Senior Prom, held at the Aladdin Temple Shrine on May 5, was attended by a large percentage of the stu- dent body. The theme was “Putting on the Ritz.” Phil Dirt and the Dozers played music from the 50’s and 60’s to the delight of their audience. This year’s prom included one unplanned event: a bomb threat! The building was tem- porarily clearned so students talked and danced in the park- ing lot until allowed to re-enter. 38 Prom “Puttin’ On The Ritz” Opposite Above Left: Clark Kranz and date quench their thirst after dancing. The skit performed by the four-points portrayed many incidents that have happened during the senior year. Although it was amusing, it also emphasized the value of high school memories. The hard work endured through twelve long years, the two early morning graduation practices, and the anticipation while waiting outside were all well worth the time spent, be- cause the 1984 commence- ment showed the excellence of the senior class. 42 Graduation It’s So Much More Than Just A Diploma Opposite Top: The 1984 graduating class files in Mer- shon Auditorium. Every year each class elects students of their class to hold offices of President. Vice-President. Secretary and Treasurer. There is also an election held for officers of Student Council. The elections are held in the spring of the previous year. Re- presentatives for each class are also elected by the students. Elaine Hottenroth, the Activities Director, is the head advisor to Student Council. Many other teachers help as advisors to the four classes. Student Council provides democracy within the school. They represent the student body. They are the link between the school administration and the students. In addition to making and reviewing rules and regula- tions. they sponsor dances and activities, and help inform the students of administra- tion concerns. They march along with the Ma- jorettes and the Cardinal Cadettes dur- ing half-time on Friday night football games and in parades. Band practice begins in August with a camp and early morning drills in the parking lot. During the school year in the fall, they practice after school in the same parking lot whether there are cars in it or not. The band members have been known to walk on the cars while marching. Try-outs for the Majorettes and Ca- dettes are held in the spring for the fol- lowing year team. To join choir requires an audition. Sopho- mores, juniors, and seniors may tryout. The choir has a winter and spring concert, sings in the Memorial Day Parade, and performs at the graduation ceremony. The Treble Choir is composed primarily of sophomore girls. The Treble Ensemble is composed of junior and senior girls. Membership is acquired through auditions. This year, the girls per- formed at the Breakfast with Santa and the Mother-Daughter Banquet held for the con- gregation of the Linworth United Methodist Church. The Mixed Ensemble is made up of senior girls and junior and senior guys by audition. This group sings mainly throughout the holi- day season at banquets and company din- ners. They also tour some of the elementary schools and visit area retirement centers. It is obvious by the endless list of events under the guidance of Mr. Haney and Mr. Moyer that the WHS choir groups are very active in the community. Mixed Ensemble: Row 1: Beth Pozzini. Clubs 55 Sports Clubs Worthington High School has a wide variety of sports for the students to participate in. But who are the women behind the men of these sports? On this page, they are the Cardinal Club, Basketball Club, Soccer Club, Wrestling Club, and Gymnastics Club. The girls work hard through the season mak- ing locker signs, decorating locker rooms, setting up banquets, arranging bake sales, and, of course, the most important thing to the athlete’s stomach, the “Spirit Boxes” which contain all the sweets. Many of the clubs also include the making of Senior scrapbooks. These include pictures of the senior playing and all articles put in newspapers about his particular team and its success. The staff is chosen by J.R. Mansfield on the basis of his classes in Journalism. The Phoenix reports on everything from the be- ginning of school to the end of school, in- cluding some things that may go on during the summer. It is popular for its sports arti- cles and stories breaking around the school. They also publish the Senior Wills at the end of the school year along with its famous Sen- ior Issue. The Archaeology Club is a small club at the high school, but it is also very exciting. They go on field trips to places around Ohio to look for Indian artifacts. The club advisor is Mr. Bob Hill. Worthington High School is very fortunate to have its own darkroom. Because of this, the Archaeology Club Photography Club students may join Photography Club. The advisor is Mr. Larry Kincaid and he helps the students learn how to use the equipment to develop their rolls of film and make prints of the negatives. The club is open to anyone who wants to make pictures. A-Power is a club for those at WHS who like things a bit late. They know the true meaning of “fashionably late . The club name stands for the Angelic Procrastinators of Worthing- ton’s Elite Regions. The group procrasti- nates so much that their fall picnic is in Feb- ruary and the spring picnic is in September. Phoenix — 2nd Semester — Row 1 Dave Buchanan Row 2: Dave Riebel. Neil Richard. At the Friday night football games, there are a group of girls there to help the students get rowdy and cheer the teams to victory. The fall and winter cheerleaders practice long hours their routines to cheer at the games. The Varsity Cheerleaders for the 1983 football season competed at OSU for a second place award for their pompom rou- tine and at UCA for a third place award in the chant competition. The girls often hold fund raisers to raise the money to pay for their uniforms and jackets. Bake sales contribute to the fund. During the seasons, the cheerleaders are very busy with practices and games and. of course, school work. The cheerleaders must keep up their grades and are included in the eligibility. J.V. Library Office Aides Each semester students who have a free period or study hall may request to become an office worker or library aide. Students volunteering may receive a quarter of credit per semester. Office workers assist the sec- retaries in the East and West Unit Offices. They fill our passes, answer the telephones, college attendance cards, deliver messages and, of course, those lovely point notices. Library aides also have special jobs that they do to help the librarians. They file books and cards, work at the front desk, check books in and out. and anything else that may have to be done to help run the library. These students are much appreciated by the staff and help Worthington High School function more efficiently. West Office Workers: Row 1: Tim Mattox. Cheryl Scott. Todd Alexander. Thespians Thespians are a group of students at Worth- ington High School that are involved in school activities for more than 100 hours. It’s true. To become a thespian one must work on the production of the plays at the high school. These hours add up and may be received by working either backstage, props, costumes, make-up stage crew, lights, or set construction. On stage acting and student directing can also help earn these hours. When a student has received enough points, he must, on a day in May. act like a fool-dress and act out a song or char- acter — to anyone possessing a yellow In- ternational Thespian Society Membership Card. The student’s goal is to obtain one of those cards. Thespians: Erik Ficas. Sam Meyers. Dave Alexander. Rich Greene. Liz Davis. Darren Hawkins. Andrew Strom, Judy Blackmore. Troy McDonald. Kelly Lowe. Clubs 65 International Club Having the opportunity to have students from many lands. Worthington has an Inter- national Club. The club members learn about the cultures of many countries be- sides their own. Food and games are ex- changed from country to country and the experience is worth while. Language Clubs Worthington High School offers a variety of foreign languages. Among them are Ger- man. French. Russian, and Spanish, in addi- tion. each language has its own club. The clubs need to raise money throughout the year for activities, and they do this by having bake sales and other money makers. The most interesting fund raiser this year was held by the French Club. After finding spon- sors. they held a spaghetti dinner in the Kil- bourne cafeteria. Most of the clubs meet twice a month, but they don’t stop there. Many of the groups dine at elegant restau- rants that serve food from their respective countries. In addition to the language clubs, there is also the Spanish National Honor So- ciety. This club is for those having an “A” average in the class. They often tutor other Spanish students. French Club: Row 1: Ellen Kuwana, Wendy Commons. Michelle Wentworth. Julie Barnes. Heather Tarczy. These students, under the advising of Mrs. Pyron, each study a separate area of facts. Some- times the areas cross. Then they go against other schools in competition for points re- ceived for correct questions. This is a good experience and the students learn some things that might have been skipped over in classes. Although a small group, the Chess Club learns the fundamentals and rules of chess through playing games amongst themselves and sometimes with other schools. In The Know Newcomers’ Club is for students new to Worthington School System. They have pic- nics. banquets and parties so that they can get to know people in the school and the administration. The advisor is the guidance counselor Ms. White. Ahtough there are not many people in the picture, there are almost forty members. MGA, Minority Groups in Action, was a group created by Mrs. Macer to help the minorities in our school enrich not only them- selves, but the entire student body by the activities of minorities in our area. This year, the club invited East High School students for a presentation concerning their culture. The assembly was very educational and very entertaining with some of the acts being the reading of Martin Luther King’s speech I Have A Dream”, gospel singing, and break dancing. Backpacking Club’s goal under the direction of Jerry Baker is to enjoy the outdoors. Members go on overnighters and longer trips. This year trips were taken to Lake Ve- suvius, Shawnee. Long before the school year begins, the CARDINAL is in the planning stages. Staff members meet in early August to begin to solicit advertisements from local businesses which help pay for such things as color and the cover of the CARDINAL. The staff con- tinues to work with ads until December. Dur- ing this time the editors-in-chief work with the CARDINAL advisor. Mrs. Schoenhoff. to lay out the general design of the book sec- tions. The staff has four major deadlines to make before the book is complete. Along the road there are many headaches and problems; however, by working together, we get things done. Although the hours spent are many, the yearbook staff has a great time along the way with pizza parties, a Christmas party, and a Sunday brunch at the end of the year at the James Tavern. This year’s staff has worked long and hard to provide our students with a book of memories. We hope the book will mean as much to WHS students as it does for us. The WRITERSPATCH is a collection of the student’s short stories, po- ems, and artwork. The staff is responsible for all aspects of production including col- lecting student contributions, soliciting ad- vertising to finance the magazine, and selling the WRITERSPATCH. In addition, students on the staff do all editing for mistakes. This is an very long and tedious task. Money mak- ers for this year’s staff included bake sales and participation in the Winter Carnival. Writerspatch: Mrs McDonald. Sara Driskel. Gale Hallowed. Shahnaz Joarder. Judy Blumgardner. The Southwest trip is taken every odd year, and the Grand Cayman Island trip was taken during spring break. The trips last approximately one month with the exception of the trip over spring break, which lasts one week. The trips use the fam- ous never fails to break down WFSI bus. The trips are very educational, exciting, and adventuresome. Clubs 73 74 Clubs 76 Clubs National Honor Society DECA Working Clubs Worthington High School is very lucky to have a program for students who wish to learn a type of business while in high school. These clubs are: DECA, OWA. OWE, COE, and VICA. The students go to classes in the morning and go to work in the afternoon. Some of them also go to state and national competitions like Trevor Ramey who took first place at both and is now the national champ. National Honor Society National Honor Society is a selected group of students whose main function after being elected into the club is to tutor other students in specialty areas. Juniors are elected for their following senior year. Seniors are also elected, but their work is minimal as the school year is almost over and so is their high school career. To be elected into the National Honor Society, the students must be a Junior or a Senior and be in the top third of their class. They must also be voted in by their teachers. National Honor Society tapping and in- duction is held in the spring of every year. NHS: Row 1: Susan Mathews. Scott Houlton, Patti Mis- kmis. Libby Harding. Rosemary Dop. Katie Vierow. Sophomore Pat Kelly had the chance this season to prove his worth as a pitcher, and he did with a final win loss record of 2- 2. Caro- lyn O’Leary. Glenda Oury, Martha Schmidt, and Debbie Noel. There girls have been playing together since their sophomore year, and the team will miss them. Next year will bring back many oth- er valuable players. Freshman Holly Pappas was the starting pitcher for the team and will grow with them. Come on let's gel started1 Walkabout The A.P. provides many types of learning exper- iences. Walkabout is one of them. Walkabout is an optional program primarily for seniors who have completed all. or almost all. of their graduation requirements by the end of first semester. It is a period when seniors may investigate possible ca- reer interests or pursue experiences unattainable in a regular high school setting. These seniors locate placements where they may work daily in place of the usual school day. Thus they gain a unique experience and perspective on their inter- est. Seniors do not observe on Walkabout; in- stead. they actively take part in their chosen sub- ject. Walkabout illustrates the A.P.’s ability to pro- vide students with varied learning environments. Senior Rec is a term given to a host of activi- ties that fill an afternoon and evening in early June. Students display projects accom- plished during “interim,’’ a one to two-week period devoted to independent pursuits. Seniors who participated in the Walkabout program share their experiences with stu- dents. parents, and the community through a symposium that features lectures, slide- shows. and demonstrations. The evening also includes a potluck meal, talent show, slide program, and presentation of a rose and gift to each senior from the junior class. This year was very special because the tenth anniversary of the A.P. was celebrated with a reunion of A.P. alumni. May the Senior Rec tradition continue for the next ten years so we can realize a 20th year anniversary! Reunions are a blast! Ellen Fiorentino solos.
