Before important athletic events, girls arrive at school at 6:30 In the morning to festively decorate the halls. Students pour into crowded halls during class changes. Streams of flustered students filled with the five-minute panic Race against authoritative clocks and pink late slips. Monitors saunter in the halls. Classmates stealthily examine shadowy figures Parading past the dosed doors. The volume of voices crescendos in the dogged lunch lines. Latecomers scan the cafeteria, Searching for a vacant space beside a friend. 3:07—Doors burst open with rushing bodies. Reverberating against the brick walls. The muffled stomping of the marching band Echoes across the practice fields. Anxious players cram into the musty equipment rooms. Halls resound with sprinting team members. Cleats scrape on loose gravel. Club meetings explode with the excitement of expanding interests. Muted laughter Ungers in dusky hallways as the last of the Students and faculty drift out into the late afternoon. A lone runner reveals the intense body strength and Concentration of the harmonious physical spirit. BELOW LEFT. Dave Carter is half-escorted, half-carried from the field after re-injuring his knee in the violent physical stress of a football game. BELOW. After-game canteens give Joey Cornette and Darcel Miller an opportunity to release tension. RIGHT. Dave Barnes exemplifies the utmost in personal effort in the lonely art of competition in cross country racing. 6

Gradually the rhythm evolves. Meaningful experiences become ideas. Goals are defined. The tempo fluctuates among large, enthusiastic crowds with understanding friends in reflective at oneness. The silence and the noise bring the world into focus— Often in desperation or disgust reality is again pushed away. Answers are found to numerous questions, But the tide of questions is endless. Students press to know truth— it whispers through the trees settles in sun-flecked corners. Storms whirl through veiled minds forcing changes forcing growth. FAR LEFT. At the football field for the first pep rally, team member Roger McGlaughlin appears alone and separate from the other people around him. ABOVE LEFT. Bud receives a small bonus from pennies that students have tossed into the window wells. CENTER LEFT. Students relax at the end of the day and lend themselves to the semi-unstructured process of a pep rally. BELOW LEFT. Sharon Kipp enjoys the freedom and sunshine which is one of the choices offered by the new lunch option. ABOVE. Margaret Henninge ceases work on her batik during summer art and lapses into a pensive mood. RIGHT. Coach Wion, who is chiefly responsible for the year's victories, although surrounded, appears anxious and alone. 5
