We can recall so vividly sitting in the classroom in 1949, learning the fundamentals of education from one who exemplified patience, understanding, and compassion. It was through her outstanding qualities that we began our school life with enthusiasm and interest. To all of us she stands for courage, perseverance, and spiritual strength. In appreciation of her many serv- ices and the contribution she has made to us individually and to our school, we dedi- cate the 1961 CARDINAL to Miss Marjorie Willock. 4 i Q ,Q f ' ' X: V A 1 4 gs N .,,,, 'I 5 ii . 3' Sr A ix 5 J 3 Q S 23 Q E' r 3 iiilff vi Q -Q v fm, 9. 2 1-. The names and the dates that have fostered our foot- notes recall to mind the different emotions that we have shared as a class. Sorrow and joy, success and failure alike, have touched us all during our years at Worthington High School. Whether, as we read our soliloquy, we laugh or we cry, they are the footnotes we have lived and shared, and the memory of them is never to be forgotten. During the Freshman year, Dennis jones, President, headed our class down the path of future success. julie Bird represented both the Homecoming and CARDINAL Queen Courts. Halloween attendant was Jayne Beaver, and climaxing our first taste of high school life was the Freshman Frolic held at Holliday Hill. Providing leadership during the Sophomore year was Duncan MacVicar, President. Sally Tangeman and Pam Harman were Homecoming and Halloween attendants re- spectively. For the second time, julie Bird was chosen as a member of the CARDINAL Queen Court. During the summer, many members of the class enjoyed the first large project by working as ushers at the Ohio State Fair. We entered the junior year led by Bob McBride, President. We had many successes including our class play, Dear Phoebe, and the enchanting junior-Senior Prom, South Sea Adventure. Pat Zuidema was Homecoming attendant, and Sherri Carter represented the class on the Halloween Court. Among the finalists on the CARDINAL Queen Court were Susan Payne, Sherri Carter, and julie Bird. julie was crowned the 1960 CARDINAL Queen. To end our class footnotes, we entered into the Senior year with a desire to make the last the best. President, Bob McBride, directed class participation in many projects including the Chicken Bar-B-Que, the Spaghetti Dinner, the Fish Fry, and chips and corn sales. Student Government leader was Rick Fisher, chosen by the Student Body to conduct school policies. janet Warren ruled over Homecoming Festivities as Queen, with Sue Tomlinson as attendant. Queen of the Halloween Festival was Pam Gerald, and her Senior attendant was Sherri Carter. Our class play, The Man Who Came to Dinner, proved to be a huge success. As Easter vacation drew near, the goal for which we had anticipated for four years became a reality. The Class of 1961, the last class to take a Senior Class Trip, spent one week touring Washington D.C. and New York City. May the fellowship we have shared, and the experience we have gained together as students of Worthington High School, guide us in the future to be better citizens and individuals. Early in the fall, students and teachers alike eagerly awaited the arrival of Gunter Wendt, a high school senior from West Berlin, Germany, who was to spend his twelfth year of learning at Worthington. Students were delighted with Gunter's friendly and courteous manner. Enthusiastically he took an active participation in the swimming team, Student Council and Senior Class activities, meet- ing and remembering many people and names. Gunter's interests are mainly in international affairs and political policies. He was especially interested in the Presidential campaign and showed great knowledge and understanding of our election process. In addition to many other foreign students, Gunter was sponsored by the American Field Service, an organization dedicated to promoting international understanding, supported by private businessmen and government funds. It is the hope of the students of Worthington that Gunter will achieve his success and continue his interest in international understanding. 42 affm-'Q gram, l hiv Raw 1: G. Mitchell, K. The team compiled an overall 6-4 record finishing in a tie for third place in the Central Buckeye League. In the three years under Sabock, the team has steadily improved with each year's experience in the tough C.B.L. moving up from a 2-7 slate in '58 and last year's 4-4-1 finish to this year's 6-4 standing. Football has always been one of the major sports at Worthington, and last fall football fever was running high after the Cardinals completely dominated play in their three pre-season scrimmage games. The Cards were defeated the first game by a hard-running team from Watterson, but bounced back to roar through their next three opponents, including the Co-Champions of the Mid-Eight League, Hilliard and London. After battling through the roughest physical pounding of the year, Worthing- ton emerged victorious over perennial power Mt. Vernon. An inspired Delaware team pulled off their biggest upset by upending the Cardinal eleven, 20-16. The stage was now set for the long-awaited game with arch-rival Arlington. Worthington dominated play and held the lead for three quarters, but Arlington mounted an offensive late in the final quarter to score the winning touch- down with a minute and forty-three seconds left in the game. The Cardinals were beaten, but played their finest game of the season. The team next edged Bexley 20-18 with Nick Norman's ninety-seven yard touchdown gallop in the closing minutes of play. Undefeated Urbana then beat the Cards 28-O. Worthington closed the season on a two game winning streak with wins over Granview and Whitehall. Next fall should be one of Worthington's best with a battle-seasoned corps of juniors back to lead the way. Chic Dambach will succeed Roger Campbell and Dennis jones as the captain or next year's squad. Best of luck, men . . . i-gjfiifyf W 4 r . ,Ae ..efi ' M -, 3 1 z - gg. ff- A1-fx, -at , 2 ,,. The squad had an over-all season record of 9-9 and a league record of 7-7, placing the Cardinals fourth in the C.B.L. The team enjoyed an excellent season on the home court, losing only two games to the two top teams in the league. In compiling its 7-7 league record, the team was able to defeat all league foes at least once, with the exception of Upper Arlington and undefeated Urbana. The interest in wrestling has steadily increased each year, and now the sport has come into its own at XY!'.H.S. We had another fine season this year winning eight and losing only one. The team finished first in the Whitehall invitational, first in the Pleasantview Quadrangular and second in our own invitational. The matmen were runners-up to a strong Whitehall squad in the district. We had two district cham- pions in Doug Goins and Mike Baker. john Shoemaker and Duncan MacVicar were runners-up. The senior members showed a fine exhibition of the art and finesse of wrestling, accomplished only through several years of hard work and the perfection of tech- niques. This year's squad was coached by Les Baum and captained by Doug Goins. XVe congratulate the wrestling team for a fine season and Wish them the best of luck for next year. Editor Karen Stout has been aided by Advisor Mr. Phipps, and Assistant Editor, Gwen Mitchell. The 1960-1961 Cardimzl was designed to give the students of Worthington High School a lasting and memorable record of their 1960-1961 school year. Our theme, Footnotes of 61, was intended to compliment the main activities and to extend beyond just a picture or a piece of copy. We tried to do things just a little different this year, including the addi- tion of the special Senior Section at the end of the book. We feel, although senior priority is a thing of the past, that a yearbook should be guided more towards a senior's interests, for it is their last. In the editing of a yearbook, there are many people in- volved. Mr. Phipps, Advisor, Business Staff and Spike Bon- nell, Business Manager, Will and Prophecy Staff and Diane Ensign, Editor, Index Staff and Beth Egelhoff, Editor, and the Editorial Staff and Pam Harman, Editor, all worked hard and diligently to meet deadlines and then more deadlines. We hope that you, the students of Worthington High School, enjoy reading and rereading your 1960-1961 yearbook for many years to rome. Cardinal Editor, Pam Harman ' EDITORIAL STAFF: Row 1: J. In the Fall Festival of Arts, the choir presented the Lowland Sea , a tragic one-act operetta. The main characters were portrayed by Judy Ann Yost and Dave MacCoy. The next appearance was the Christmas Concert on Decem- ber 22. This year the program consisted mainly of serious songs. Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, Glory To God, For Unto Us a Child Is Born, Away In a Manger, Go 120 Tell It on The Mountain, Advent Motet, No Man Is An Island, and Rocking were the songs included in the pro- gram. Again this year, the choir joined the other choirs of Worthington in the annual Church Choir Festival. The high school choir sang Advent Motet, Agnus Dei, and O Brother Man. The joint choirs sang such songs as Psalm III, Now Let Us All Praise God and Sing, Gloria, and Po' Good Jesus. Row li J. Bernhagen, J. Henderson, L. Lee, S. Reiser, C. Pearson, C. Rapp, M. Ingram, C. After the operetta, the choir began to prepare for the Dis- trict Contest. The choir enters this contest yearlyg however, the requirements this year were somewhat different. In addition to the required song, the choir was given a completely new song. Two minutes were allotted in which the choir was per- mitted to examine the piece. The result was a combined ef- fort of the conductor and the choir members to interpret She work musically and with expression. This helped to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of- the music. The Spring Sing was the final performance of the year. The choir never failed to realize how valuable Miss Pierce had been as a director, teacher, and friend. 121 N Row 1: S. Tangeman. M. Davies, M. Pappas, N. Harras, C. Caudill, M. Anderson, B. Bill Hastings, who writes the lovelorn column, uncovers a sports-fix scandal with the help of Rochelle, a chorus girl. He accomplishes it by dressing as Aunt Phoebe. Things really begin to pop then! Rochelle is killed right under the noses of Bill and Mickey, the female sports- writer. Solving the murder is made more difficult by the arrival of Big joe Moroni, a big time gangster, of Victoria Parrish, the eccentric owner of the Star and many other strange characters. The lead parts were assigned immediately before Christmas vacation and rehearsals began directly after vacation. With a vivid Moroccan setting, this famous operetta, by Sig- mund Romberg, tells the story of the notorious Red Shadow who has devoted his life to freeing the Arabs from the op- pression of the French soldiers. To keep his identity unknown, he disguises himself as Pierre, the timid son of General Bira- beau, the French governor of Morocco. Complications arise when the Red Shadow falls in love with Margot Bonvalet, a young American girl in search.of adventure and romance. Bennie, a newspaper correspondent, and Susan, his secretary, add a colorful and comical touch to the operetta. jerry Collum portrayed the Red Shadow fPierrej, Janis Jennings portrayed Margot Bonvalet, Dave Smith played Ben- nie and Marilyn Landon, Susan. The chorus was under the direction of Miss Ruth Pierce and Dwight Horch, Student Director. Mr. David Miller con- ducted the orchestra. C3lSt . . . Neri . . . Azuri .... Edith .......... Especially the yearbook that records your senior year. It is more than just a reminder of one year's activities - it is a record that extends back to your first day at Worthington, and recalls for you the faces that were especially friendly and the people you want to remember most. For some, the 196Q-1961 Cardinal will have twelve years' significance, for some only one, but for each graduating senior it holds special meaning. The Cardinal Yearbook Staff hope that each one of you enjoys. reminiscing over the pages of this annual as much as we have enjoyed constructing them.
