Before becoming Super- intendent, Mr. McCord taught and was principal in the high school. Mr. Earl W. Lane entered the Worthington School system as a teacher of math and science in l953. He became acting principal in January of this year, re- placing Mr. Williams. Mr: Lane attended Ohio Univer- sity and Ohio State where he obtained a Bachelor and Masters degree in Education. Congratulations to the members of the graduating class of i959 upon their achievements during their high school years. lt is my sincere hope that each of you has acquired the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to assure success in whatever you undertake. I wish each of you happiness and the best of luck in the years ahead. Administration We hope you are looking for- ward to your future with the confi- dence and enthusiasm that you have displayed here at Worthington High School. Your school is always interested in your welfare and we will be glad to be of service to you at any time. We wish you much hap- piness and every success in your future endeavors. Mr. Glenn D. Williams became principal of this high school in 1956. Since l95O he had been a teacher in our high school. Mr. Williams obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from O.S.U. On the first of January he took a leave of absence in order to finish his work on his Doctors degree. My very best wishes go with the class of '59. My only regret is that l could not have been with you throughout your Senior year. l want to encourage each and every member to call upon us in future years whenever you feel that we can be of service. l am sure that the entire faculty ioins me in a sincere desire for your success in whatever you do. Teachers have fun at Mixer loo Mr. Hammill, Mrs. Bernhagen and Mr. Howell ioin in the square dance 9 xi Phil Lowmun President Joe Raffaelle Vice President-Proiects Charlotte Rosenquist Vice President-Points Gary Shidaker Treasurer Linda Huck Secretary The Class of 1959 Senior Soliloquy Four years ago, as Freshmen, we started our proiects with a magazine sale. Our first glimpse of high school life was at the Fall Mixer. Under our officers, Rick Orwig, Bill McCord, Barb Demos, and Pat Patterson, we held our pen- set sale. Outstanding salesmen were found. In the winter came our party, The Merry Mix Up and our Valentine party. Our Sophomore officers were Rick Orwig, Bill McCord, Phil Lowman, and Nancy Stump. Our Halloween float brought a prize and we were on our way up. There were struggles with those foreign languages which were really foreign. The car wash was one of our maior proiects, and we ended the year with a wonderful picnic at WRFD. Then we became upperclassmen. Waiting for that hard earned license was quite an effort and the roads were not safe anymore. Even though we had only three home games, the concession stand was a lot of fun and a success. Spring brought first aid kits and our first theatrical production, DOCTOR IN SPITE OF HIMSELF. The Junior-Senior Prom, ORIENTAL PARADISE, was a year long proiect and the re- sults certainly showed the work we did. Our class was repre- sented in athletics, music, and scholarship. Our Junior leaders were Chuck Janssen, Sam Cushman, Barb Severns, and Judy Albertson. At last we made it. Seniors! Our last year has been filled with many activities. Monologues, a tradition, were again outstanding. Our Senior class play, HIGH GROUND, will be remembered as a success due to the work of the whole class. We set a high goal for all the underclassmen to beat in our large presale on play tickets. The Chicken Bar B Q was de- licious, as all who worked on it remember. We could not forget the Spaghetti Dinner, which was iust fun. Our officers kept the work coming with a Fish Fry, Smorgasbord, and Carnival. Seniors were driving to be specific all year and it was a maior proiect. Our cry became money, and we at last made it to New York. We will never forget our faith- ful chaperones and teachers, Mr. Lowery and Mr. Rousculp. The work of all the Seniors produced the best graduation ever. As we leave Worthington, we take with us experiences which will never be forgotten. il Q Judy Albertson Sue Aleshire Chuck Allan Ruth Badertscher Barry Baker Bob Baker fm! Becgmnmg . . The team tried hard to give the seniors a go- ing away victory. However, Grandview scored a touchdown and two extra points in the first period. Worthington held them scoreless from then on, and Dick Vercoe plunged across the line in the third quarter. A pass play tor two extra points was blocked, and the Bobcats emerged with a two point win. The actions of one of the stran- gers, Miss Sarah Carn, were very peculiar indeed, and Sister Mary took an interest in the frightened young woman. Miss Carn had been accused of causing her brother's death and she, not thinking herself guilty, became very upset. With the increased interest in wrestling in the school, the squad became too large for the available mat space with the result that some eager prospects were forced to quit. We hope that a larger squad will be made possible in the future by the acquisition of new mats. Led by Coach D. Crockett and Co-Captains Paul Pappas and Bill McCord, the squad won ten of eleven matches and finished first in the District for the second straight year. The only loss of season came at the hands ofthe state-champions, Bridgeport. The team had only two seniors on the varsity this year, and we wish the returning wrestlers the best of luck next season. The lO-9 record of this year's Worthington High cage squad does not show their true ability. The Cardinals lost tour of their games by a total of 7 points. The squad started the season by winning four of its first tive games. This record was reduced to 5-6 in the next six contests. lt was a back-and-forth season from then on. One consolation, however, was that the Cards had a hand in determining the league cham- pionship by defeating Bexley when the Lions were tied for the league lead. They almost upset champion Urbana, but they lost to the Hillclimbers in the last minute ot the game. In the Class AA Tournament the Cards were matched against a powerful Columbus East squad. The Tigers were given a big sur- prise when Worthington outplayed them most of the way. Led by Captain Bob David- son, Worthington held the lead during much ofthe game. Couples coming into the garden were captivated by the tranquil beauty of the scene. An oriental paradise had been created by the hard-working Juniors in the gymna- sium. The scene was made complete by a towering pagoda, a scenic oriental bridge, and hundreds of lighted Japanese lanterns. Music was provided by the Ziggy Coyle Band. After the dance, TO CATCH A THIEF and THREE COINS IN A FOUNTAIN were shown at the Beechwold Theater. Barbara Harman, Pat Patterson, Steve Bobrovnikoff, and Ralph Matthews working as Associate Editors contributed a year's Saturdays. To them goes the credit for the greater part of the book. Sue Smith was an indispensable right-hand girl. She planned the CAR- DINAL Queen Dance and helped with everything. Special sections were edited by Ruth Badertscher, Louise Dierker, Carol Forney, Claudette Greene, and Jane McDaniel. Tom lannarino and Don Robison deserve recognition for designing the cover and Don Robison, for drawing the hourglasses. Special thanks are due to Don Ketter for the time he spent in company with the press camera at school activities. Rick Orwig and his staff successfully met the challenge of financing the yearbook. Their role was a very essential one. The help and advice of Mr. Phipps made work go more smoothly. This concludes the 1959 CARDINAL. We the staff have tried to capture on these few pages as many activities as possible and we hope that you will find pleasure in returning to these pages in years to come.
